What is considered a local account?
what is considered a local account?
There is no such animal if you are talking about iCloud.
Macs (though not iPhones) can have several user accounts, so that different people have their own sets of documents, preferences,and so on.
An iCloud account accesses email, calendars, contacts etc on the iCloud server. Your Macs and devices read them from the server, so obviously these are not 'local'.
You can also have individual calendars and contacts kept under 'On My Mac' - these, as you would surmise, are actually stored on the Mac and are not 'synced' to iCloud - and thus won't appear on other Macs or devices. So these are 'local' but they are not 'accounts'.

What happens to my local user data? -newbie question sorry
Hi All,
Firstly apologies if this seems a dumb question, I've scoured the forums but I require something that fits my specific situation.
I've had a (my first) MacBook for about 9 months, built up a fairly healthy local user, setup just how I like it, MobileMe, iTunes, Chrome, iPhoto library, lots of other apps, etc etc and so forth.
I'm setting up a Mac Mini Server, and was wondering what I can do to join the new server, but take all my settings/downloads/iTunes etc with me... I don't want it all stored on the server, but I come from a Micro$oft Windows background. With MS, when you add a PC to a domain, login with the appropriate user account, you have a fresh profile, no settings, no files, no customisations etc etc is this also the case when I hit that Join Network Account server button on my Mac? Will I get a blank fresh account on my Macbook?
I'm guessing this must happen quite often as people start their way into Apple technology and build up a nice healthy local account before branching further into the Apple world...The two laptops I use everyday have access to all the servers via my network account. It is set so that my user account is listed as having "no home" So I log into the laptop with my local user account with a UID of 501 but access all the network services via the go menu and my network account of the same name but with a UID of 1034.
For all other users in the company, if they are on a laptop, I use network accounts. The machines are managed to ask if the user wants to create a mobile account when they login. For permanently assigned laptop users, the answer is yes. This puts their home on the laptop and ties them to that machine. I use mobile account syncing to make sure their critical data is copied to the server for backup.
By having the machine ask to create the mobile account, users can answer no and login to their network home. The use of the laptop may be needed temporarily if a regular workstation is down.
Once in a while I will need to convert a local account to a network account. While a bit more laborious that setting it up correctly at the beginning, it can be done.
But I never let any user account have the UID of 501. I would set that up as the local admin account I use for installing updates and performing other maintenance. If needed, I would back up the user data and erase and re-install the OS. -
Using Windows 8 x64 Enterprise, Sysprep pauses to ask me to create a local user, which I don't want.
If I enable SkipSystemOOBE and SkipUserOOBE in OOBE under Microsoft-Windows-Shell-Setup sysprep (in oobe mode) will skip user creation and autologon works. But it only works correctly once. If I run sysprep again, when it tries to autologon
it will say that I have the wrong password for the local account. After I type in the password manually it works. If I use the same password for the local administrator account as for the autologon account, it looks to have the encrypted password
twice with an equal sign after it.
What I need to know:
How to skip local user account creation (we run on a domain but I have it connect through scripts later)
How to fix the autologon issue
Do I need the local administrator account enabled for this to work?
I have my unattend.xml file attached.

</unattend>The user accounts-creation page in Windows Welcome is suppressed if a user or a group is added to a local security group. Add a user or a group to a local security group by doing one of the following:
Create a local user.
Add a domain user to a local security group with the Microsoft-Windows-Shell-Setup | UserAccounts unattended installation setting.
To suppress the user accounts-creation page in Windows Welcome, without creating a local user, use one of the following workarounds:
Workaround 1
If the computer is already joined to a domain, use the following XML example to add the Domain Users security group to the Local Users security group.
<DomainAccounts>
<DomainAccountList wcm:action="add">
<DomainAccount wcm:action="add">
<Group>Users</Group>
<Name>Domain Users</Name>
</DomainAccount>
<Domain>FabrikamDomain</Domain>
</DomainAccountList>
</DomainAccounts>
Because joining a domain automatically adds the Domain Users security group to the Local Users security group, the DomainAccounts command does not affect the membership of the Local Users group. However, using this XML example to join a domain will also suppress
the user accounts-creation page in Windows Welcome.
Workaround 2
Use the Sysprep/Quit command to set the following registry value to 1:
HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Setup\OOBE\UnattendCreatedUser

Hi and thank you for your interest,
recently all of the Microsoft applications refuse to start on one of the local accounts an a late 2013 MackBook Pro. Every time you try to start Word, Excel or any other Office app you get a non-specific message "...quit unexpectedly...". A following log is available, but before I post it I would just like to say that I have tried:
*using it on other local account and it works
*fixing permissions
*cleaning user specific library (all the application support, preferences, saved states, etc.)
*uninstalling office and manually removing all 'leftovers' [root library and user libraries]
*booting in safe mode
*reinstalling Office
Still no luck, that's the log:
Any help would be very welcome, thank you.

I was able to boot from my LaCie FireWire 800 hard drive backup. This was my daily backup so the data was only a few hours old. That told me I did not have on motherboard issue – thank you very much who's ever out there looking over my shoulder.
I then removed both internal drives and was able to power cycle the SSD drive via my PowerBook G4 from February 2005 thank you very much PowerBook G4.
After booting several times from the FireWire drive (to test that the external drives which used to be the internal drives were actually visible and they were), I then reinstalled the 2 internal drives but not before totally reformatting the SSD drive. For at least the third time in the last five years my daily and weekly backups along with the program superduper have saved my buttinsky...
At this time some 100 Gb of my 326 on my SSD is copied over. I realize I am not out of the woods yet because after fully copying all the data I have to be able to boot from that SSD drive in the main compartment.
And I really think this was nothing more than me deleting invisible files on the main hard drive thinking that this was just some maintenance task that I could do and instead I totally corrupted the SSD.
I will post this now and I'm probably 2 to 4 hours away from having everything copied over and then seeing if it actually boots and works. I'll post back then or if it's too late here in Belgium then tomorrow.
What I've realized is that it's great to have backups and also great to have an eight-year-old PowerBook G4 but I'm definitely going to need a fully backed up recent Mac in case this would ever happen again. It's an expensive route to go but better than recovering from another heart attack well another one I guess I had one today I'm not sure. -
Can I search email archive on iCloud server from iOS device, or can I only search what it has downloaded locally?
I currently have an iPhone and iPad, and am soon changing over to a Mac. When that happen I'd like to try to see what I can migrate over from the Google ecosystem to the iCloud ecosystem.
1) Currently I have the Gmail iOS app (a webapp container) that can search server-side of several years of email archive. Can iCloud do this using the iOS native mail application? Or is the search just limited to what the device has downloaded locally?
2) Do I have to use a @me.com address for the full iCloud email sync to take place between server, Mac, and iOS devices?
Believe it or not I've read quite a bit about the iCloud services, but the answers to these questions were far from clear. Many thanks for the help.2) iCloud only syncs email between .me/.mac addresses. For other accounts like google, you set up the account in the mail app and if they're IMAP accounts, you can sync between the google server and any devices you have defined that account on.
I'm not absolutely sure about 1) since I haven't had to search going back years - I use MailSteward for that on the mac. On my iPhone/iPad, when I go into a mailbox and the emails are not immediately available, it downloads them. I suspect for a search, you need the emails downloaded. -
How do I create a local account from a network login from the command line?
I am connecting to my organization's domain using 3rd party software which doesn't allow for using the GUI for creating local accounts. How can I do this through the command line or is there a better way to script it? Thanks in advance!

What is the importance of Account Currency in GL master
HI,
Guru's what is the importance of account currency in GL master
Moderator: Please, search before postingyou can change the local currency option in GL master. but only think is that GL account has not been related to cleraing accouts.
SAP has given good example below.
Examples
You set up a clearing account for goods receipts and invoice receipts and manually post these items to it. You post invoice receipts in the invoice currency and goods receipts always in the local currency.
Invoice receipt 1000 DEM 600 USD
Goods receipt 600 USD
Both items can be cleared if the clearing account balances are recorded in local currency only. If you have not set the indicator for this account, the system will translate DEM to USD during the clearing procedure in order to determine the amount in USD required to clear 1000 DEM. If the translation rate is .65 USD per DEM, then the system displays 650 USD for the invoice receipt and 600 USD for the goods receipt when the open items are processed.
This means that to clear both of these items, you will also have to enter a difference posting for 50 USD, and the system will automatically make an additional exchange rate difference posting for this amount.
Hope this will help you.

We are running a commercial application on a Windows 2008 Server. After reboot, we cannot access the application because two services fail to start. The reason they fail to start is that the passwords to the local user accounts tied to those services have
either been deleted or reset to a different value. In order to restart the application, we must reset the passwords of these two local accounts, then stop and restart all the application's services. According to the application's maker, the accounts
must be local.
My colleague believes the passwords are being deleted or reset as a result of a global domain policy. Is this likely?
Assuming my colleague is correct, is there anything we can do locally to prevent these passwords from being deleted or reset when the server reboots? If not, what is the most granular change we can ask our AD adminstrators to make to the policy, so
that these local accounts are not touched at reboot.
Thanks.Hello,
have you configured the accounts to have the permission "Log on as a service"? I have seen that this is not given to the account and therefore the service fails to start.
Best regards

Local Account can't connect to address server
Hi there, since a few days my addresses and calendar are not synced anymore. I found out, I can't connect with my local accounts to my local mac os x server mavericks on the same machine anymore. The same days I changed something on my security and firewall settings, maybe there is a problem. Anyone knows, what I have to do, please?
The following error messages are printed in console log:
04.08.14 05:09:22,738 com.apple.preferences.internetaccounts.remoteservice[27121]: [CardDAVPlugin-ERROR] Unable to find additional info dictionary for key: /principals/__uids__/E276D199-408C-44EA-AA27-9AA0142D3B47/

First I had to empty the Folder ~/Library/Caches/ . Than I deleted the File ~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.internetaccounts_old.plist . Not sure, the last one is necessary. And third step was, I recreated the accounts from inside iCal and the Address Book.
But now I still can't connect from my iPhone to the Server... Any suggestions? -
Managing Computers with 10.5 Server, but NOT managing Local accounts?
I'll try my best to be clear here - I'm new to 10.5 Server and a functioning Open Directory environment! (formerly used 10.3 Server and never had the OD working).
Environment:
School (K-8), with old iMac G3's (10.3.9), eMacs (10.4.11) and a smattering of Mini's and iMacs (10.5.x).
Server:
10.5 Server, OpenDirectory and DNS appear to be working perfectly.
User Accounts:
Staff members have accounts for logging into sharepoints.
No one (yet!) has server based home directories except a couple for testing.
On each computer there is a "staff" account and a "student" account.
These are LOCAL accounts, and do NOT have same-named accounts on the Server.
I have bound client computers to the Server by OpenDirector
dsconfigldap -v -f -a servername.domain.org -n configname -u diradmin -p adminpass
Now comes the trouble;
I have added the computers to the Workgroup Manager computers list.
I have applied computer preference settings for the Energy Saver preferences ONLY. THey appear to have worked (managed computers slept/shut-down/started up according to the managed preference).
NOW comes the real problem;
The "staff" account on the managed computers is denying access to most applications on the computer!
Note: this "Staff" account is local ONLY, and is NOT a server-hosted account.
I have NOT tried to manage the computer preferences for applications on these computers.
I can resolve the problem by unbinding the computer from the OD Server - but I'd prefer not to do that. I just got them all bound! And, it screws up my migration plan TOWARDS server-hosted home directories.
I have tried managing application prefs for a COMPUTER, only to have both the STaff and Student account lose ALL of their local-only application managment settings (all of a sudden, Students can open terminal, grading programs, etc).
I am obviously missing something!
At this point, I'd like to back up... to NOT having my Server interfereing with the local accounts until I'm further along mapping out my migration from local-only accounts with file sharing access to Server hosted accounts and server managed preferences.
(I will also admit I'm a bit confused about when to manage USER preferences, vs when to use managed COMPUTER preferences.).
Tips appreciated!Your last question - using managed user vs. computer preferences got my attention. Mostly, I use Group managed preferences. I do use computer preferences for a laptop cart, other than that I use group preferences. Perhaps your situation calls for managing users, but using group preferences allows me to change the settings for a bunch of people all at once rather than changing settings for each user.
In any event, check all the managed preferences for your computer level settings. And since you're using a 10.5 server, you have to check the settings for clients that are running 10.4 and earlier as well as the settings for 10.5 and later clients, as they are different.
At the user level, if you have an OD account and a local account with the same name, the local account will determine what the user can do - I honestly don't know if managed computer prefs will override local settings, but you should look into it. This could be your problem.
At the very least, you should avoid "testing" with systems that folks are using if you want to avoid the frustration that you are now encountering (speaking from experience i.e. similar mistakes, not preaching). -
Macbook bound to AD won't allow network login or new local account creation
As the title states I am having an issue related to a macbook pro that is bound to active directory. The only option we tweak when binding the macs to AD is that we opt to "create mobile account" option under directory utility.
It also seems that while we can login through the local admin account, new local accounts cannot be created (the account creation window hangs when you create account).
Any help would be appreciatedHi
To successfully bind a mac workstation to Active Directory certain things need to be in place:
DNS has to be fully resolving on both pointers. This is done on the PDC or whatever server is the designated DNS Server.
Date and Time settings need to be adjusted to reflect whatever is designated as the NTP Server in the AD environment. Adjust the Date & Time Preferences Pane and find out from the Windows Network Administrator what the NTP Server IP address is.
You must use account credentials that has authority for the AD Domain. If you're trying to use your own account it may be restricted in what it can do? A domain account has special privileges not usually accorded to ordinary user accounts.
This assumes you're (a) not the Active Directory Network Administrator and (b) you're using the Active Directory plug-in the login options section of the Accounts Preferences Pane. It's a good idea to click the "Open Directory Utility" button when binding to Active Directory. It's also a good idea to access the Advanced Section once the Utility has opened.
If this is failing at the bind stage then perhaps you should review the details you've been given when binding to AD? It may be worthwhile to clear the workstation from the Computer OU before you try again?
The above is not an exhaustive list but should help?

What permission does the Service account requires on AD for the Workflow manager 1.0 to be configured in SharePoint Farm?
The workflow manager configuration wizard crashes with the below error when used a domain account (setup account with full prvilige on sql and server). It requires some specific permissions on AD ? I couldnt see any documentation stating what permission
it requires.
Can anyone help ?

Thank you in advance.Huh!? "Local account in debug mode?" What does that mean? And "my code is on a remote server". What do you mean by that? Its in a Subversion repository or something?

Authentication Order - Check AD first before local account
Hi
I have a 21" iMac that has the Accounts/Directory Utility/Authentication order set as follows:
- /Local/Default
- /BSD/local
- /Active Directory/All Domains
- /LDAPv3/<mac server dns>
My iMac has a local Administrator account with all other users authenticating to my Windows AD.
However, something that I want to do is to create a local user that has the same name as a AD account. If that account is used with the network cable unplugged I want it to authenticate locally. If the network cable is plugged in I want it to authenticate to the AD.
I thought I would be able to do this by swapping around the authentication order - putting /Active Directory/All Domains first. BUT... you can't move that above /Local/Default or /BSD/local.
Is what I want to achieve possible?
(the reason for doing this is so that the iMac can be taken offsite and used with the same username, yet share the same local profile whether connected to the network or not.)
Thanks
AndrewHi
+"Is what I want to achieve possible?"+
No. Local Users will always take precedence and if there's a networked account named the same as a local one, the local one will always log in regardless of what you do short of deleting the local account of course.
There is actually a 'built-in' solution you may not be aware of? Depending on how you want to do this you could simply access the Advanced Section of the AD Connector and enable the option to create a mobile account on login. This will cache/create the network folder locally in /Users. In effect an additional local account that is not really local. You could read more about the advantages and disadvantages as well as possible uses of Mobile Accounts here:

I have found that received mail is not returned to the sender if the receiving
local account does not exist. This problem occurs even if I use Console to
enable the Return message to sender option under the error handling methods.
In addition, I have used the configutil
to confirm that I have set the value
for Unknown account action to "13," which corresponds to the settings "Return
message to sender," "Notify the postmaster via email," and "Log the error in
the log file." Yet, in this situation, an error message is being sent to
postmaster, but not to the sender, and the error is not being recorded in the
log file.
<P>
Do the following steps:<BR>
<P>
<OL>
<LI>From Console, open the appropriate Messaging Server.
<LI>Click the Configuration tab.
<LI>Open the Services folder.
<LI>Select SMTP.
<LI>Click the System tab.
</OL>
<P>
Check the "Domain handled by this server exclusively" field to make sure that
your mail domain is listed. If your mail domain is not listed, then Messaging
Server will assume that there is another mail server that is handling the
domain listed and will forward requests to this server.
<P>
For more information, please see the document <I>Messaging Server
Administrator's Guide</I>, Chapter 3, Configuring SMTP Services at <BR>

If this:

is to be believed, it seems to indicate that your NAM configuration on
this server is not valid. I'm not seeing this message here on the OES
servers I looked at, and NAM is working correctly here.
