What is considered excessive fan speed/internal temp?

Among all of my installed applications, there is one program (a moderately graphics-intensive game) that causes the fan in my MacBook Pro to spin very very loudly and heat up to 82 degress Celcius (181 F).
First of all, what temperature is is considered to be within normal range?  I wouldn't normally be concerned about CPU temperatures, but the noise coming out of my computer is unusually loud.
I'm on a 2012 model 15" Retina MacBook Pro, running OS 10.8.3.

Actually how accurate is the temp reading on HWMonitor for your MSI board?  One thing I noticed is that w/ Coretemeter the temp reading was around 48-50c on Rig#1 and almost 58-60c on Rig#2 (That's my HTPC w/ EXTREMELY tight spacings so still work in progress as far as cooling's concern!) but using HWMonitor I got 31c CONSISTENTLY on both rigs!     I'll love to think that I'm indeed running this cool but feeling the exhaust air, I think this 31c reading is not real...

  • What are you using for Fan speed AND temp monitor?

Thanks to Bosskiller, my rig seems to be running a bit stabler now!  Knock on wood.  Is there any program other than MSI's core center that monitor fan speed AND temp?   I used to use MBM but it's no longer being supported and CoreCenter doesn't seem all that popular here?

  • What's the normal fan speed?

Hello, my fans have always been around 2000 rpm with both tiger and leopord, so I am wondering what is the normal range for fan speed when the computer is not running anything heavy.

So, I'm not crunching much at the moment; yet I have 133 F and 3906 rpm. However, that doesn't signify. It was flat on a wood table. Now, laptop; Room fan now on. That fan is the main thing. I read a great overview, will post link if I can find it, that air is like fluid dynamics: a MBP flat on a table in an air conditioned room (no fanned air movement) will run hotter than an MBP with space under, with a room fan, moving warmer air. Yah, no, really true.
Get freeware iStat Control 1.1 (1.2 soon): (http://www.islayer.com/), which will display fans' speed and temps in the menu bar, andmore, and make popcorn too, with the lavalamp thingee.
Then I use Fan Control, 1.2, freeware, and set it up a tiny bit just to be cool: " ... Do you think your MacBook (Pro) is running to hot? Give Fan Control a try then. Some MacBook (Pro) are just to hot for daylong use. Fan Control adjusts the minimum fan speed depending on the current CPU temperature. For safety, it leaves the original automatic fan speed control intact ..." Leopard Ready, yah.
    http://www.lobotomo.com/products/FanControl/index.html
Both are preference panes in System preferences, which is very elegant, imho. And yes I have Leopard still shrinkwrapped. I will take a stab at it soon. Goodbye, cruel world (nah).

  • What should my Macbook fan speed be? and battery help

My mac goes hot real easy and my battery goes down really quick. Ive tried doing what websites have told me to do (Eg. Turn down brighness) but not helping at all. HELP

There is a free to download App called iStat, which will run in dashboard.
This will enable you to see actual temperatures at key points in the Macbook (CPU etc). It will also tell you fan speeds etc (but take care interpreting such information. It's at best a 'relative' tool)
    Here is the link;

If you're still worried after you see real figures, post again with the temps etc.

  • 3d Turbo Fan Speed And Temp Readings

    Hi
I am just wondering if this is normal for a fan speed 3478 when the default is 3500 and I find the TEMP is high 52c idle. My video card is a Ti4200-TD8X (ms-8894)

    That's pretty normal.
What is the case temp and room temp?
Mine read the same rpm at 45c, but it was 10 degrees cooler in here during the winter, I suspect it's right around the same.
No worries, now you can uninstall the 3d turbo and forget about it. You are one of the very few on this forum that program works for 8o

  • What are the default fan speeds of a MBP Retina 15'?

My settings got a little out of control, and I don't really know what the default values were, so what kind of fan speed does your MBP have in idle conditions?
    Thanks.

2000 rpm is the base line that the fans run. They can ramp up to 6000 under a heavy load.
smcFanControl does not let you set a minimum speed to a value below Apple's defaults.

  • Fan Speed & internal Temperature of 600-1170a

    Hi There,
I have an all in one desktop PC, Model is 600-1170a, Product Number is: VT558AA-ABG, OS is win7 home Premium Pack 1. it restarts itself after continuous running for several hours, I installed SpeedFan v4.50 software and found speed of fan2 is 0, Temp1 is -128degree, which is impossible, could anyone of you who has same/similar pc please install same software and tell me these 2 parameters?
    speed of fan1 & 3 is normal, about 2000rpm.
BTW, I opened the back cover and only found 2 fans on the mother board.
    Thanks,
    Lawrence

    Hi,
128 degrees?  The only time that I have seen 128c is with the OCZ Vertex 3 SSD and this is a design flaw.
I am not a fan of Speed Fan as it has a history of being buggy.

  • Is the Mac App Store down ? / Fan Speed, CPU Temp problem ?

I tried to enter the App Store, this dialog box came up:
I had to reinstall my OS and programs as things started to go "Haywire". Would have this affected the App Store program on my mac ?
When thing went "Haywire" I noticed the fan running very fast. While I was reinstalling the OS from TC the fan was still running fast for about 15 minutes.
I did a screen shot of iStat Pro to show that the fan went up to 5,485 RPM and the CPU got to 79 Degrees Celcius.
Could this have damaged anything { Software / Hardware } ?
I know I may be a bit paranoid about this, but I have spent a lot of money on my mac and want to take every precaution to make it last as long as possible.

    UPDATE
I was in the middle ( 567 MB ) of downloading the Mac OS X 10.7.3 Supplemental Update when my mac "crashed". When I restarted the download had gone 'pear shaped'.
I clicked on the App Store icon in the Dock and the App Store opened with no problems.
While I was trying to download the Mac OS X 10.7.3 Supplemental Update the fan was still going fast ( around 4900 RPM )
This still has me worried, but I will see how things go before sending it in to be looked at.

  • Fan Speeds, and Mirror Raid with New Internal Hard Drive

    Regards,
I recently installed and formatted a new hard drive in my PowerMac dual 2.3 ghz computer and I have a few questions.
    1. Now that there are two hard drives do I need to do anything to ensure that the fan on my computer can keep them cool? I think the fans I have in the hard drive bay is enough, but I do not know if they will automatically set themselves to run properly. I can monitor the fan speeds and temp from iStat pro, but do not remember what level the temperature was before installing the new one.
    2. Given that my new drive is a SeaDisc hard drive and the older one is a Western Digital, will this cause any problems in creating a mirrored RAID. I believe that both are 7200rpm drives, and my second hard drive is a little larger (I will just have unused space after making the RAID). I am concerned with the fact that these two drives are from two different manufactures. Will this cause problems or drastically slow down the reading and writing of data? Has anyone else experienced problems in making a mirrored RAID from two hard drives that are not exact matches, and even come from different manufacturers?
    Any advice will help.
    Thanks
    earpshmael

    Hi earpshmael;
Generally when creating RAID arrays the more similar the drive the less problems you tend to have.
The real question is exactly why do you want or need RAID?
I think so many people seem to think that RAID will solve all of their problem. I hate to tell you the bad news but it will not.
Generally there are to varieties of RAID available using the software RAID built into OS X which are 0 and 1. RAID 0 or stripling is generally for moving large file rapidly for applications like HD video. It usually doesn't help the OS. RAID 1 or mirroring is for protection from drive failure. It is not a valid backup solution.

  • MSI CD53, i5 750 - Problem with CPU Fan Speed

    Hello
I have problem with this counfiguration: i5 750, MSI CD53 Motherboard.
I Have processor overheating poblem. I noticed that processor easly can go up to 90C.
I check phisycal installation, and all its ok.
After that i check RPM of CPU FAN and i noticed that it cant go over 1000 RPM, so propably this is problem.
In MSI Control Center maximum i can set 1000 RPM.
I read that CPU FAN can go up to 3000 RPM.
Maybe i have something wrong set up in bios? What can i do with this?

Which board exactly do you have?
What is your current BIOS Version?
What kind of CPU-Fan are you using (3-Pin or 4-pin PWM (four wires) and which connector is it attached to?
What are your current fan speed/control settings in BIOS Setup?

I check phisycal installation, and all its ok.
Physical installation is one thing, but what about thermal paste (have you used a PROPER amount (too much thermal paste has the opposite effect))?
    What about your case ventilation?

  • Is it possible to control CPU fan speed (lower) with K8T NEO2-FIS2R (MS-6702)?

    I have:
    MSI K8T NEO2-F motherboard
    AMD Athlon 64 3000+ processor
Bios is latest I found, AMI BIOS 9.20
Operating system is Windows XP pro.
Processor was boxed and with the normal amd fan.
Processor fan is plugged in CFAN slot.
My problem is that the cpu fan spins a bit too fast. Cpu temp stays at 25C and fan is spinning at 1800 rpm.
Setting manual mode from corecenter didn't change the fan speed at all. Not up or down. Neither can SpeedFan program. But if I stress the cpu, the fan starts spinning faster.
What is controlling the fan speed and can I manually control it?
There are no control options in bios.
If I missed any information, please do ask more.

    Hi,
Core Center is crap, you can't do anything else with that than uninstall.
Speedfan works. You'll have to set "PWM 2" from "thermal cruise" to "manual control" somewhere in the advanced configuration menu, I don't remember where you can find that. The help file provided with speedfan is quite good, I strongly recommend reading it carefully. Using speedfan you can also control a second fan connected to the SFAN-connectors.
The built-in fan control sets the speed of the CPU fan to 2/3 of its nominal RPM value (my fan starts at 2100/min, max is something about 3300/min or so). Its speed increases quite late, on my system at temperatures above 50°C. And it increases quite slowly.

  • Fan Speeds and Temperatures 24" iMac 2.8GHz

What are the default fan speeds for a 24" iMac 2.8 GHz?
Also, what are the 'normal' temperatures for this computer?

The default iMac profile is the best for general use. For calibration get a Spyder 3 Pro: http://spyder.datacolor.com/product-mc-s3pro.php

  • 5500 rpm fan speed on MacBook Pro 17"

I've got a MacBook Pro, Core Duo 2.16 GHz at work. It has been working just fine, but for the last six months, the fan speed has gone ballistic! When I wake it from sleep, fan speed is about 1000 rpm, but within ten seconds, the speed builds up to 5500 rpm. CPU use is at 2%, the temperature of the CPU is around 40 degrees.
I've installed smcFanControl, but no matter what I set the fan speed to, it never goes lower than 5500 rpm. If I set it to 6000, it goes up to 6000... I've also reset the PRAM, but with no result
    Any hints on this?

    Try resetting your SMC.

  • Y730 Game Zone Temp and Fan Speed Display

I've got a Y730 that I'm having issues troubleshooting.  Currently the fan runs full speed and the display for Fan Speed and CPU temp on the Game Zone don't register anything.  I've tried running some apps that are suppose to read and display fan information and they also don't pick anything up.
I'm a little confused about what is going on because both the temp and the fan speed aren't displayed. Does all this information come from the fan or could there be something else that is causing the issue?

USB operations involves quite a bit of CPU action, Elphidieus.
Firewire places less demand on the CPU but, in a situation like the one you describe can involve both increases in power usage and in HD temperatures.
The fan speeds on Macs are not simply responsive to CPU usage. Both HD temps and power usage can also play a part in the equation that ultimately produces the fan speed. As HDs have much lower heat tolerance than CPUs you will find that it is quite common to see the fans ramp up when doing a large file transfer over FW (or USB, for that matter) , especially if the internal HD temp gets to over about 50-55º Celsius.
    Cheers

  • Fan speed and CPU temp

    Hi There,
    I have MBA 13'' Mid 2011.
I'm little bit concerened about Temp of my CPU which is 96°C, and Fan speed is around 6500rpm.
I can hear my fan all the time.
It was not like this always and i'm kind of sure that something is causing this.
I worked before with lots of apps open (itunes, photoshop, text editor, chrom, mail, parallels..) and fan and temp was not this high.
Is there way to find out what is causing this high usage?
    Thanks in advanced

    First execute a SMC reset:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3964
If no change, install istat menus.
    http://bjango.com/mac/istatmenus/
Open Activity Monitor to ALL PROCESSES and CPU.  Make certain that CPU displays values from high to low.
Post images of both istat menus and Activity Monitor whe the MBA has heated up.
    Ciao.
