What is corrupting my photograph files?

I have a file of saved jpeg pictures going back about 6 years. Many were created using mac os 9 and AdobePhotoDeluxe. But sure as fate, each time I open the file I find a few are unreadable. Norton Antivirus doesn't show a problem. I makes me wonder what is the point of bothering to save pictures digitally.

Ewan
How about some details?
each time I open the file
What file? Do you mean Folder? What are you opening these images with?
Norton Antivirus doesn't show a problem.
It wouldn't - there are no virii for Macs.
Oh, and where does iPhoto fit into all of this?
Regards

Numbers does not open with the main user after installing mountain lion. It works flawlessly when I use the second account on my mac. What got corrupted in the admin-account, something in the user-library? How can I fix it? I´m kinda desperate... (the same happens with the other iWork-Apps!)
Looking forward to hearing from somebody with a littlemore expertise than me, Chris

you can remove preferences files by navigating to the Preferences folder for your user as follows:
    0) Quit ALL iWork apps (Keynote, Pages and Numbers)
    1) from the Finder select the menu item "Go > Go To Folder…".  This will bring up a dialog:
    2) enter the path "~/Library/Preferences" (no double quotes)
    3) find the files:
    com.apple.iWork.Keynote.plist
    com.apple.iWork.Numbers.plist
    com.apple.iWork.Pages.plist
and move these to the trash.  I would NOT empty until later.
    4) restart Numbers

  • ITunes corrupting my m4a files

    Hi,
Occasionally, a song that I ripped from CD into iTunes just stops playing or starts to skip. It becomes corrupted by iTunes somehow after playing fine for months.
I am using the latest iTunes (9.0.1) on Windows XP. I also have an iPhone 3GS with the latest firmware.
When I tried playing the latest file to become corrupted with Quicktime instead of through iTunes I got the following error message: "Error -2002: a bad public movie atom was found in the movie". It is not a movie file however.
I don't know if the error is the same with all the files the become corrupted since this is the first time I have started to investigate the problem in more depth.
Has anyone else experienced this? It is quite annoying. I have to delete the m4a file an re-import the song.
Hopefully, iTunes will be fixed to stop it corrupting the files but in the meantime does anyone know of an easy way to fix the file other than re-ripping the song?
    Thanks for any help,
    Scott.

I've got this problem too. It's been going on for 6 to 8 months now but I didn't realize exactly what was going on. Files I'd just bought off the iTunes store started skipping on my iPod, and then it extended to older files I'd bought months or years earlier. It didn't affect any of my ripped tracks (which I rip to MP3 using LAME, so they're not AAC files).
I just assumed it was my iPod dying, refusing to play AAC properly anymore, because they played fine in iTunes. But I just got an iPhone and now I hear blips in the songs in just the spots where my old iPod would skip them. I just tried Quicktime Player, and while it doesn't give me any errors I do hear blips in the music there too.
I know it's not my hard drive because it started on my old G4 and they're still getting further corrupted on my new Mac Pro (songs that weren't previously skipping are skipping now). It's gotten to the point where about 60% of my purchased music is unplayable! A month or two back I tried setting up a brand-new iTunes library and re-imported all of my music to it, and that didn't solve the issue either (they're still getting corrupted).
I could get iTunes support to let me redownload all the corrupt songs, but I'm afraid that'll be a useless "solution" if it's going to re-corrupt them all again.

  • Mailed PDF files arrive on Windows platform as corrupt Windows Media files

Recently I mailed some .pdf files to 3 of the Windows machines on our network. Each of them reported that when attempting to open the .pdf file on the Windows machine, their system tried to use Windows Media instead of Adobe Reader. Of course they received an error message. When they saved the .pdf files on their machines, the files opened correctly in Adobe Reader.
These are files that I downloaded from the State of Oregon. After we had problems there, I mailed them some of the .pdf files I had created. Same results. The Windows machine treats them as corrupt Windows Media files.
I am the only Mac in our company. Of course the problem must be mine!?!
I am using MS Entourage as my mail client.
    Suggestions? Comments? Answers?
    Thanks!!

    Kappy,
No problem! Your suggestions were what made me consider the extension option in Entourage's preferences. Unfortunately, it didn't work.
Your suggestion also prompted me to try the same thing using Mail. Mail worked just fine, so the problem is in how Entourage handles the .pdf file being sent to a Windows computer where it will be opened either in Outlook or Internet Explorer.
It seems that Somewhere along the line, the .pdf extension is being changed to a .png extension which triggers the launch of Windows Media Browser.
I just rebuilt the Entourage database and I'll see what happens now.

  • ORA-19566: exceeded limit of 999 corrupt blocks for file

    Hi All,
I am new to Oracle RMAN & RAC Administration. Looking for your support to solve the below issue.
We have 2 disk groups - +ETDATA & +ETFLASH in our 3 node RAC environments in which RMAN is configured in node-2 to take backup. We do not have RMAN catalog and the RMAN is fetching information from control file.
Recently, the backup failed with the error ORA-19566: exceeded limit of 999 corrupt blocks for file +ETFLASH/datafile/users.6187.802328091.
We found that the datafiles are present in both disk groups and from the control file info, we got to know that the datafiles in +ETDATA are currently in use and +ETFLASH is having old datafiles.
    RMAN> show all;
RMAN configuration parameters for database with db_unique_name LABWRKT are:
    CONFIGURE RETENTION POLICY TO RECOVERY WINDOW OF 3 DAYS;
    CONFIGURE BACKUP OPTIMIZATION ON;
CONFIGURE DEFAULT DEVICE TYPE TO DISK; # default
    CONFIGURE CONTROLFILE AUTOBACKUP ON;
CONFIGURE CONTROLFILE AUTOBACKUP FORMAT FOR DEVICE TYPE DISK TO '%F'; # default
    CONFIGURE DEVICE TYPE DISK PARALLELISM 4 BACKUP TYPE TO BACKUPSET;
CONFIGURE DATAFILE BACKUP COPIES FOR DEVICE TYPE DISK TO 1; # default
CONFIGURE ARCHIVELOG BACKUP COPIES FOR DEVICE TYPE DISK TO 1; # default
CONFIGURE MAXSETSIZE TO UNLIMITED; # default
CONFIGURE ENCRYPTION FOR DATABASE OFF; # default
CONFIGURE ENCRYPTION ALGORITHM 'AES128'; # default
CONFIGURE COMPRESSION ALGORITHM 'BASIC' AS OF RELEASE 'DEFAULT' OPTIMIZE FOR LOAD TRUE ; # default
CONFIGURE ARCHIVELOG DELETION POLICY TO NONE; # default
    CONFIGURE SNAPSHOT CONTROLFILE NAME TO '+ETFLASH/CONTROLFILE/snapcf_LABWRKT.f';
    CONFIGURE SNAPSHOT CONTROLFILE NAME TO '+ETFLASH/controlfile/snapcf_labwrkt.f';
Above configuration shows that SNAPSHOT CONTROLFILE is pointing to +ETFLASH. So I changed the configuration with the SNAPSHOT CONTROLFILE points to '+ETDATA/controlfile/snapcf_labwrkt.f'. At the end of backup, SNAPSHOT file was created in +ETDATA and I was expecting it to be the copy of control file being used which has dbf located in +ETDATA. But still the backup was pointing to old datafiles in +ETFLASH. Since we dont have RMAN catalog, resync also is not possible.
When I ran it manually, it was successfull without any error and was pointing to the exisiting datafiles.
    RMAN> backup database plus archivelog all;
I hope the issue will get resolved if the RMAN points only to the datafiles present in +ETDATA. If I am correct, please let me know how can i make it possible? Also please explain me why the newly created snapshot file does not reflect the existing control file info?

    Hi,
I am getting an error from the DBA Planning Calendar every time the job ...
So when was your last successfull backup of this datafile. Check if still available.
If this is some time ago, and may be you are currently without any backup, try to backup without rman at once,
to have at least something to work with in case you get additional errors right now.
Then you need to find out what object is affected. You are on the right way already. You need the statement,
that goes to dba_extents to check what object the block belongs to.
Has the DB been recovered recently, so the block might possibly belong to an index created with nologging ?
(this could be the case on BW systems).
If the last good backup of that file is still available and the redologs belonging to this backup up to current time are as well, you could try to recover that file. But I'd do this only after a good backup without rman and by not destroying the original file.
If the last good backup was an rman backup, you can do a verify restore of that datafile in advance, to check if the corruption is really not inside the file to be restored.
Check out the -w (verify) option of brrestore first, to understand how it works.
(I am not sure it this is already available in version 7.00, may be you need to switch to 7.10 or 7.20)
    brrestore -c -m /oracle/SHD/sapdata4/sr3_16/sr3.data16  -b xxxxxxxx.ffr -w only_rmv
You should do a dbv check of that file as well, to check if it gets more information. I.E if more blocks are
affected. rman stops right after the first corruption, but usually you have a couple of those in line, esp. if these are
zeroed ones. (This one would also work with version 7.00 brtools)
    brbackup -c -u / -t online -m /oracle/SHD/sapdata4/sr3_16/sr3.data16 -w only_dbv
    Good luck.
    Volker

  • What I view the dbx files are of unknown format from TEMP directory?

When you start Outlook Express DBX file to create a push, but after the program can not find it. There is a configuration change that? In the TEMP folder found files, but they are of unknown format, what I view the dbx files?

The user of the DBX Viewer Tool can recover mail messages from *.dbx files in the batch mode. If you recover messages in the Batch mode, messages are extracted from *.dbx files one by one and immediately saved to the hard drive. Batch message recovery can be
used to recover correspondence from a large number of corrupted *.dbx files simultaneously.

  • Severe corruption of .MOV files in Lightroom & unusable processing speed

    Hi all,
I run on an Intel i7 quad core, 12 GB Ram, 2 GB Graphics Card (nvidia), Raid 0, 2x512 GB Harddisk space (1 TB), Windows Vista 64bit using the latest cut of Lightroom 3.4.1 64bit.
Using a Canon 7D with latest firmware updates, for RAW/JPG/MOV - this is the only source of all files that I currently use in Lightroom.
First Question regarding corruption of .MOV files:
Once I copy my files over from the camera onto my computer, I can play all .MOV files seemlessly with no flaws or hiccups (using multiple movie players), after I import the files in the directory (this includes the .JPG's, .RAW's, and .MOV's) into Lightroom, my .MOV files no longer play on my computer, the files begin to stutter and jolt, and are completely unusable. You can imagine my frustration as I've only recently added a huge chunk of my files to be cataloged by Lightroom, resulting in the last years worth of .MOV files being corrupted and ruined.
I am wondering if anyone has had this issue before and if they've found a way to fix it? I understand I could simply un-tick the import of .MOV files (and do so from now on), but I find it baffling that Lightroom is ruining the .MOV files - as it's not actually meant to touch the original files themselves is it? It's meant to add it's own layer of things to do to that file, stored in its own catalogue never meant to actually change the original files themselves.
Second question regarding unusable processing speed:
When DEVELOPing in Lightroom (I develop on two 24" monitors, both displaying at 1920x1200) it can take anywhere between 10-20 seconds for what I'm actually doing to take effect, ie. spot removal or changing the noise levels of a photo. My catalog currently has 10438 photos in it - is this overwhelming for Lightroom?
I love Lightroom and its functionality - when I first started using it these problems didn't seem to exist, so I'm unaware if it's an update or if it's just the increase in photos it has catalog'd that're bogging it down. I would love to resolve these matters as Lightroom is definitely where I want to be.
    regards,
    Emilio

    Thanks for your response,
After what you said, in having absolutely no issue with .MOV files, I decided to ensure every drive on my computer was up-to-date and all software packages were final cut versions.
When I started playing my .MOV files (using VLC version 1.1.10 as standard), the files played fine after a graphics card update/VLC update/Windows system update/computer reboot (Lightroom NOT loaded) - So you are absolutely right, Lightroom is NOT in any way affecting my original .MOV Files, however:
When I then loaded Lightroom up, and started to then play my .MOV files (whilst Lightroom was running, and still using VLC (standard default player) (no other packages loaded), the files would begin to jolt/jitter/ struggle to play again.
If I monitor Task manager/Resources the only noticable heavy usage on Lightroom is having dedicated itself 1.7 GB of memory (not that much considering 12 GB is available), but also that clicking on any picture (whilst in grid-view, showing .CR2+.JPG as one, second monitor showing preview image) all of my 8 CPU's would spike to 90-100% for a second or so then drop down - fair enough.
I then close Lightroom and my .MOV files still don't play accurately - after a while (approx 30 minutes) my .MOV files will play seemlessly fine again.
So, I stand corrected that Lightroom is, in fact, NOT corrupting my files and regret my title choice, but is Lightroom doing something to my system which is making it hang/struggle whilst Lightroom seems to flush/go through its buffer?
Also what import preview do you set your catalog to? 1:1 then wait for it to complete the full import or standard?
Another major issue I'm having is when exporting multiple files (200+ or so), I notice the exporting process is fast initially then dramatically slows down my whole computer as all my RAM (the full 12 GB's) gets sucked up - after 60 or so photo exports Lightroom would have used the full 12 GB Ram I have available, and stopping the export does NOT free up the Ram - I need to completely close Lightroom (which then frees up the used RAM).
    Thanks in advanced

  • Why is Illustrator asking me what page of me .ai file I want to open as PDF?

    Hi there,
I'm having troubles opening an .AI file that I use a lot of the time.
It's 15+ boards, and I've never had a problem opening it in Illustrator. Today, when I'm trying to open this AI file, it's giving me the dialog box to open a PDF.
    Any help would be appreciated!

    Lady Munchlax,
It is always recommended here to open/save from/to own harddisk, and the copy from/to external devices/places.
You may be lucky for a while, but corruption and other issues will be lurking out there.
I am afraid that is what has happened.
How much can you rescue by opening the PDF (all pages one by one)?
Here is a general suggestion in case of corrupted files, which may be of help:
One thing often tried first is to create a new document and File>Place the corrupted one to see how much may be rescued that way (remember to tick Paste remembers Layers in the Layer palette flyout/dropdown first, and to untick it afterwards).
Here are some websites where you can see whether it can rescue the file, and if it can, you may pay for a subscription to have it done,

    http://markzware.com/adobe-software/fix-illustrator-file-unknown-error-occurred-pdf2dtp-fi le-recovery/

As far as I remember, the first one is for Win and the one is for Mac, while the third one should be for both.

  • The file may be corrupt. The file header checksum does not match the computed checksum.

I just put Vista Home Premium on a computer I was going to give to my son. Upon adding some hardware I kept getting the above screen. "The file may be corrupt. The file header checksum does not match the computed checksum.' When I booted in safe mode and slow boot, it hung on crcdisk.sys. I removed everything except the keyboard hhd dvd and fdd and it still does the same thing. I tried to reinstall Vista but it keeps hanging. From reading a lot of other threads this seems to be a big problem. I doubt if the product should have been marketed. But.... If anyone can help me get it booted I would like to try XP instead. I tried to install XP on the same drive and it hungs there too.

    Hi ballen6721,
    Thank you for the post.
This issue can occur if the newly installed hardware device is incompatible with the system.
Based on the current situation, I suggest trying the following steps to troubleshoot the issue:
    Method 1 Device Clean Boot
    ============================================
Please unplug all unnecessary devices such as sound card, printer, network card and TV card.
Method 2: Startup Repair from the Windows Recovery Environment (WinRE)
    ============================================
    1. Insert the Windows Vista installation disc into the disc drive, and then start the computer.
    2. Press a key when the message indicating "Press any key to boot from CD or DVD …". appears.
    3. Select a language, a time and currency, and a keyboard or input method, and then click Next.
    4. Click Repair your computer.
    5. In the System Recovery Options dialog box, choose the drive of your Windows installation and click Next.
    6. At the System Recovery Options Dialog Box, click on Repair your computer.
    7. Click the operating system that you want to repair, and then click Next.
    8. In the System Recovery Options dialog box, click Startup Repair.
Method 3: Use the Windows Recovery Environment (WinRE) to run System Restore ============================================

  • Corrupt dvr-ms files using DMA2200

I have two DMA2200 extenders in my home. Both are networked and linked to media center on the same Vista Ultimate computer. I have a number of dvr-ms formatted videos stored on a NAS server on the same network. These videos have all played on either extender up until now. Now when I try to play a video, I get an error message and it's the same for either extender.
I note that if I 1st play a video on the Vista machine that the file opens with no error. I close it and then launch the same video on the extender and it works.
However, if I 1st open the file from the extender (without first opening it on the Vista machine) the error message occurs...and after it does, when I attempt to open the same file on the Vista machine I get a message saying the file is corrupted. Once the error message occurs, it always does (regardless of whether I launch it from the computer or the extender).
Why is the DMA2200 corrupting dvr-ms files in this way?

    Hi,
I did have kinda like a problem like this before with my XBOX360 and I just followed the instructions on the Microsoft website and it resolved my concern. I'll indicate the steps below on what I did and I'll also post the link to the KB article on the Microsoft website. Troubleshooting steps for XBOX360 extender and for DMA2200 is almost the same.
    Microsoft KB937609
    here are the steps
    1. On the Media Center computer, click Start and then type cmd in the Start Search box.
    2. In the Programs list, right-click cmd, and then click Run as administrator.
    3. At the command prompt, type cd %windir%\system32, and then press ENTER.
    4. Type Lodctr /R, and then press ENTER.
    5. Wait until you receive the following message, and then type exit:
Info: Successfully rebuilt performance counter setting from system backup store
    6. Restart the computer, and then reconnect the Extender.
Basically, the problem maybe caused by a network performance counter not working properly.
    I hope this helps.
    update :
Its kinda weird but when I recently checked the link for the Microsoft KB937609, it is no longer showing the article on the Microsoft website. It is good though that I was still able to copy down the exact steps, I don't know what could have happend to the Microsoft KB article. Looks like Microsoft is updating something on their website and forgot to set back some KB articles. Anyway,  you can also see other people having "video error" problems on the other forum below.

  • FullOffline Backup - ORA-19566: exceeded limit of 0 corrupt blocks for file

    Dear SAP gurus,
I am getting an error from the DBA Planning Calendar every time the job for "Full Offline backup" is run. And it is always as you can see from the log on the same file "oracle/SHD/sapdata4/sr3_16/sr3.data16".
The oracle error is the following:
ORA-19566: exceeded limit of 0 corrupt blocks for file /oracle/SHD/sapdata4/sr3_16/sr3.data16
I found the SAP Note 969192 - RMAN Backup of SYSTEM tablespace terminates with ORA-19566
but it does no apply because this is for the tablespace SYSTEM and not PSAPSR3.

    Hi,
I am getting an error from the DBA Planning Calendar every time the job ...
    Good luck.

  • Picasa and corrupt albumdata.xml file

For several days, I have been trying to install Picasa on my Mac.  I used to use Picasa on my PC but switched to iPhoto when I got a Mac and have been using iPhoto for the last several months.  I would like to add Picasa so I can access some of the sharing features that aren't available on iPhoto.  However, every time I try to load Picasa, it launches and then says I have a corrupted albumdata.xml file.  I have no problem when I use iPhoto -- there appears to be no corruption.  I have tried to repair/rebuild the database in iPhoto several times and have followed directions from some Picasa discussion forums about using Text Wrangler to find &s and other characters that might be causing the problem.  Even when I have deleted the photos that appear to have the problems, Picasa still tells me that the file is corrupted.  I have called Apple about this, but they have been no help since iPhoto is working fine and it is not their product that is giving the error message.  I would love to use Picasa, but there's something that's not working right.
I know others have had the exact same problem and seem equally frustrated.   According to Picasa, it is supposed to "play well" with iPhoto, but what happens when it doesn't?
I appreciate any help you can lend.  Thanks.

Well - and it's just a thought - you could easily post them on Google+, or Flickr, or SmugMug or any other photosharing site on the entire Internet.
On Google+ click on the Photos icon on the sidebar and then Add Photos - the bit in Red. That give you the uopload page and you can 'Select Photos to Upload from Your computer'
Thereafter... the first one of these
You can use any Open / Attach / Browse dialogue. On the left there's a Media heading, your pics can be accessed there. Command-Click for selecting multiple pics.
(Note the above illustration is not a Finder Window. It's the dialogue you get when you go File -> Open)
You can access the Library from the New Message Window in Mail:
There's a similar option in Outlook and many, many other apps.  If you use Apple's Mail, Entourage, AOL or Eudora you can email from within iPhoto.
If you use a Cocoa-based Browser such as Safari, you can drag the pics from the iPhoto Window to the Attach window in the browser.
If you want to access the files with iPhoto not running:
For users of 10.6 and later:  You can download a free Services component from MacOSXAutomation  which will give you access to the iPhoto Library from your Services Menu.
Using the Services Preference Pane you can even create a keyboard shortcut for it.
For Users of 10.4 and 10.5 Create a Media Browser using Automator (takes about 10 seconds) or use this free utility Karelia iMedia Browser
    Other options include:
Drag and Drop: Drag a photo from the iPhoto Window to the desktop, there iPhoto will make a full-sized copy of the pic.
File -> Export: Select the files in the iPhoto Window and go File -> Export. The dialogue will give you various options, including altering the format, naming the files and changing the size. Again, producing a copy.
Show File:  a. On iPhoto 09 and earlier:  Right- (or Control-) Click on a pic and in the resulting dialogue choose 'Show File'. A Finder window will pop open with the file already selected.    3.b.
b: On iPhoto 11 and later: Select one of the affected photos in the iPhoto Window and go File -> Reveal in Finder -> Original. A Finder window will pop open with the file already selected.

  • What do corrupted sql database viewer ?

There MS SQL 2005 server and a database that you want to connect to the server.
There mdf ldf and files. The problem is that, most likely, the base was incorrectly disabled, and now when you try to connect the message:
File activation failure. The physical file name "C: \ Program Files \ Microsoft SQL Server \ MSSQL.1 \ MSSQL \ Data \ GB_main_log2.ldf" may be incorrect.
The log can not be rebuilt because the database was not cleanly shut down. (Microsoft SQL Server, Error: 5120)
What do corrupted sql database viewer ?

    Hi VectoriaKoalak,
As other post, the best bet is to restore the database from a good backup.
However, if you have no backups or have damaged backups.  To fix the database, you can set the database in Emergency Mode and run DBCC CHECKDB with the REPAIR_ALLOW_DATA_LOSS option to fix up corruptions. For more detailed steps, please review
    the following blog.

  • What are the basic .jar files to be set in web dynpro project classpath

    Hi,
I am having a problem while customizing the ESS. I used DTR, DC and imported configuration. After that, I created project from one of the DC(say ess/jp/addr). Later when I open an iView from any Web Dynpro component, I am getting lot of errors without even making any modifications.
I closed the project and reopened it and reload & rebuilt, but it doesn't solved my problem. In my classpath settings I couldn't find any jar files except the jre_lib. Could you please let me know what are the basic jar files we have to set in classpath and where to get them from. We are using NWDS 7.0.06 version.
Can you please let me know how to solve this or any other way to work around this.
It's an urgent to be fixed as early as possible, plz help me out.
    Thanks & Regards,
