What is error code -6584 as related to Time Machine?

When I try to access time machine on my Macbook Pro I get an error code -6584.  I'm using a 1Tb Time Capsule.

First, if this is your only backup, you must make another full backup to a locally-attached external hard drive. One backup is never enough to be safe, and backing up over a network is less reliable than backing up locally. Then try each of the following steps that you haven't already taken.
1. Restart the backup device. You can do that by disconnecting and reconnecting the power cord.
2. Hold down the option key and select Verify Backups from the TM menu in the menu bar (not the Dock icon.) This operation may take a long time. If the menu-bar icon (a clock that runs backwards) isn't showing, check Show Time Machine in menu bar in the preferences.
3. Erase the backup device. With a Time Capsule, you do that from within the AirPort Utility application; see its built-in help for details. All backups will be lost, so don't do this until you've backed up to another device. After erasing, select the TC again as a backup destination in the TM preference pane. The first backup should be made over a wired connection, if possible.

What is "An unexpected error occurred (error code -6584)"?
Just bought time capsule, have 10.8.2.  Am using the data storage part of time casule just fine.  Configured time machine, all seemed fine.  It started a countdown to start a backup (which I interrupted because of other work I was doing at the moment).
Ever since then I have not been able to initiate time machine to do a backup.  Get the above unexpected error.
Whaaat?  Anyone have an idea?  AP

It means the TM cannot access the disk.. Reboot the TC and computer.. that often fixes things.. otherwise you need to verfiy the backup or start over.

  • HT1178 What does (error code -6584) mean?

I have recently bought a new MacBook Pro and migrated all my data from my old MacBook Pro to the new one.  Now my new MacBook will not connect with the Time Capsule - I just get a message that:
    The operation can’t be completed.
An unexpected error occurred (error code -6584).

(error code -6584) unfortunately won't tell you much that you do not already know....the connection attempt failed. That was the "unexpected error".
You may have already done this...but your post did not indicate whether you had.
Complete power cycle of the entire network....
Power everything down in any order you want
    Wait a minute
Start the modem first, and let it run a minute or two
Router next (might be your Time Capsule) the same way
Continue starting devices one at a time about a minute apart
Did you completely reset the connection path in Time Machine Preferences to "point" your Mac at the Time Capsule disk?
If not, click the Time Machine "clock" icon at the top of the Mac's screen
    Click Open Time Machine Preferences
    Click Select Disk
Click your Time Capsule to highlight it
    Click Use Backup Disk

  • HT201514 Time Machine - Error code -6584, what to do?

I have received the the following message from my Time Machine - The operation can't be completed An unexpected error occured (error code -6584)
What do I do to resolve it?
I have restarted the time machine.

There are several references to the error in discussion if you look at the more like this on the right ..
This one has some answers.. basically option click on the Time Machine icon and use the verfiy backups.
    https://discussions.apple.com/message/17748380#17748380
I don't think Pondini lists that particular error but it is caused by a combo of issues.
He has a few answers listed in the post above.
You have listed the OS is 10.7.4 Is this correct??
There was a supplement to 10.7.5 to fix some serious TM issues.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1599
Then just follow some of the instructions in the pondini trouble shooting.
If the backups are corrupted you might need to erase and start again.. this is not unusual with wireless connection.

  • What does an unexpected error occurred (error code -6584) when opening time machine

After a terminal hard drive fail in my 2007 imac which was backed up to time machine I tried to restore some data onto my replacement imac 2.9 late 2012.
I did this via migration assistant - it was a long process about 4 hours - so I went to bed and left it running.
When I returned to the imac I found I had my old programs back but none of the data assosiated with them - word but no documents, garage sale but no templates and itunes but no music...
This is my entire music collection of around 300 gig and all my Garage Sale templates which represent years of work.
Is there anyway to bypass or overcome the error so I can at least get the data mentioned above back?
    any help greatly appreciated

When troubleshooting a device that presents this alert message, go to Settings > General > About and check the version of iOS on the device. If it is newer than the latest released iOS version, the device may have a prerelease developer version of iOS installed.   Installing an older version of iOS over a newer version is not supported.
Error 1015: This error is typically caused by attempts to downgrade the iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch's software. This can occur when you attempt to restore using an older .ipsw file. Downgrading to a previous version is not supported. To resolve this issue, attempt to restore with the latest iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch software available from Apple. This error can also occur when an unauthorized modification of the iOS has occurred and you are now trying to restore to an authorized, default state.

Rename, move, or delete the iOS software file (.ipsw)
iTunes uses "ipsw" files to restore your device. If those  files  are unusable, then try deleting them, renaming them, or moving the file  to a different directory. This will cause  iTunes to  download a new copy of the IPSW.    When a restore issue is specific to a  user, it is likely due to an unusable .ipsw file. If removing the .ipsw file does not resolve a user-specific restore issue, then the issue is caused by other user-specific security software settings or iTunes preferences. My Time Capsule is showing error code - "An unexpected error occurred (error code -6584)"; can someone tell me what this means? Correlated, Time Machine does not show any backed up data although it says that ~400 GB out of 1 TB is remaining.

First one is good.. anything Pondini responds to listen. https://discussions.apple.com/message/17748380#17748380
A simple reboot of the whole network.. from off.. modem .. router/TC.. clients.. 2min gap will probably fix it.
If it keeps happening, tell us your OS. (Most likely Mountain Lion.. which has networking ability of wet string and a pair of tin cans).

  • What is error code 0X8002006E

    What is error code 0X8002006E

I was having this same error code issue - trashed several dvd discs.  I never discovered the answer; I even had a long discussion with apple tech.
I have tried lots of troubleshooting, and here's what I've noted.
Using the internal superdrive I can burn 700mb CD's, from two different manufacturers, at any speed.
Every 4.7 gb DVD was trashed no matter what speed I used; I tried two different manufacturers.
I could also burn 8.5 gb DVD's from 2 different manufacturers using any speed.
Using my External burner::  I had no issues.  Could burn any disk I had, any speed.  This leads me to hypothesis that it is a hardware issue.  I had this issue a couple of years ago, and I replaced the internal superdrive and all was fine up to now - when I upgraded to Mountain Lion.  Don't know if it's related, or the drive just gave out.  My macbook has the same superdrive and has given me no problems/issues burning any disk I give it.
Unfortunately, I used up all of my 4.7 gb disks.  If I buy more of those, I will use my external drive.
You really need to attach an external drive and test it.  It will save you a lot of time troubleshooting and pulling your hair!  LOL!
    Good luck.
