What is Ethernet Adaptor (en5)?

I tried to connect my phone via Bluetooth, after ages of messing around it seemed to work and a new Network port was created called Bluetooh PAN, I tried to turn it on but it kept erroring out, I plugged in the iPhone via USB and then a new port was created, Ethernet Adaptor (en5), which is green and connected, what is it?

I think I fixed this for me.
- Open System Preferences->Network.
- Observe that there is no "Ethernet Adaptor (en3)" or "Ethernet Adaptor (en5)" in the column of network connections on the left.
- Click the + in the lower left.
- Select Interface: Ethernet Adaptor (en3) (or en5)
- Click "Create"
- Select the newly-created Ethernet Adaptor (en3) (or en5)
- Click "Assist me..."
- Click "Assistant"
- Type in a Location name - "iPhone" or whatever
- Click Continue
- Click "I connect to my local area network (LAN)".
At this point my Ethernet Adaptor (en3) lit up green and I was able to browse in Safari.
I then just clicked the red button in the upper left and killed the Network Assistant.
Now any time I connect my iPhone via the USB cable the Ethernet Adaptor (en3) goes green and I'm online.

I recently acquired a very old Tosiba laptop from a friend.
My daughter wishes to use it for her iPod and has tried to install a Tiscali Broadband connection on it, and was told she didn't have an Ethernet Adaptor.

The Ethernet adaptor means either the LAN card or the WLan card.
In your case it could be a LAN card.
Could you please post the notebooks name?

What can I migrate from my 13" MacBook (white 2007) to a new MacBook Air 13" using an ethernet cable and a USB ethernet adaptor for the MBA?

I have, on order, a 13" MacBook Air (128Gb) and intend using Migration Assistant to transfer data from my 4 year old MacBook 13" (White) on set up.

Documents. Excel, Word, Powerpoint & pdf's (a clean install of Office for Mac 2011 will take place on the MBA)
MacBook and applications are currently up to date and I've read about disabling the energy saver to sleep option.
Is it all that simple or am I missing something?
Can Account Information in Mail be migrated?
Will saved links be transferred in Safari (especially that of my ISP's customer area)? You have no idea what navigating around Orange France is like !
Sorry if I sound a little naïve but I'm English, retired and living in France and the nearest Apple Store is a 3 hour drive away so I'm doing it all myself.

Use Setup Assistant when your new Mac first starts up. See Using Setup Assistant on Lion (it's a bit more complete).
Unless you choose to omit things, that will set your new Mac up exactly like the old one, except for a few preferences, etc., that may be different for the different hardware.
If your old Mac isn't running Lion, there will be some other differences, too. See Changes in Lion from Snow Leopard.

What is the ETHERNET ADAPTOR?

I have switched to running my internet desktop Intel iMac with wireless. I was using an ethernet cable. That cable is now disconnected and it shows up in the network preference as disconnected. However in the network preference the "ethernet adaptor (en2)" shows active. What is the ethernet adaptor, why is it active and what does it do? Thanks.

Are you running parallels or the equivalent because that creates virtual network devices to trick windows into sharing the network with OS X.

13-inch, Mid-2011
Recently, the owner of the machine bought a Thunderbolt to Gigabit Ethernet Adaptor, however, upon plugging it in, nothing happens. They have tried it with several different ethernet cables, different networks, and even exchanged the adaptor in case of that being the problem. The adaptor is recognized in System Information when it's plugged in, and Thunderbolt Ethernet is now an option under Network in System Preferences, but it still says not connected even when the ethernet cable is plugged in. Assistance in this matter would be greatly appreciated.

What finally worked for me was noticing that "Bluetooth PAN" was connected and letting me browse, when I wasn't actually connected to a Bluetooth PAN device! Turns out my Mac was confused, calling the connection Bluetooth PAN when it was actually the Display Ethernet.
I disconnected the display, deleted Display Ethermet, Display FireWire, and Bluetooth PAN. Apply, the plugged the display back in. Then added back the Display Ethernet and Apply. Presto, works fine now.

Moshi USB 3.0 to Gigabit Ethernet Adaptor

I just bought a New Macbook Pro late 2014 , I saw the Moshi USB 3.0 to Gigabit Ethernet Adaptor , My internet speed is up to 195 Mbps . Is it good to buy it or the 2.0 where the deference is only $5.00 but forget about money wise sometimes i might use the ethernet RJ45 to connect when Wi-Fi is slow since my other Macbook Pro was slow and i read a lot to do with Yosemite ? What can someone tell me about it ? Is it a good product i read 3 reviews and one was good and the other two where so so.

Ghost Ethernet Adaptor (en2) appeared in all network configurations!

Since a few minutes, for no related reason I can imagine,
I find in all my network configurations a new Network Port:
Ethernet Adaptor (en2)
Worse than this, in all the configurations I have not
recently modified, I found that this new ghost interface
is "On".
I looked at what may have happened at the Unix level to
discover that I have a new interface named en2 which has
an Ethernet address that start like the one of my internet
Ethernet card, but which is different.
Where is this ghost "Ethernet Adaptor" coming from?

Malware and Ethernet Adaptor

Hello:
It seems I might have some kind of trojan on my MacBookPro, since when I enter a particular site it redirects me to fling.com. It happens with both, Safari and Camino. I tried using ClamAV and MacScan but they do not detect anything.
I am looking at the Network Status on System Preferences, and it lists AirPort, which is correct, but there are 2 Ethernet Adaptors, one follow by (en2) and the other by (en2), and both with IP addresses (10.37.129.2 and 10.211.55.2).
Are those settings correct?

I doubt the trojan. Sex sites are notorious for doing what you describe.

Sharing one ethernet cable with two macs using a USB Ethernet Adaptor

I have two computers running Mac OS 10.6 but only one ethernet cable in my office. One ethernet cable goes from the wall to Mac #1. I have a cisco USB Ethernet Adaptor USB300M that I like to use as OUTGOING ethernet cable from Mac #1 to plug into Mac #2. Does anybody know how this works? Simply plugging it in does not work. If either of these computers is a Mac Pro (65 lb.) tower, all of which have two Ethernet jacks, Internet sharing is crisply supported with any additional Hardware. Cable the wall jack Ethernet to the first Ethernet port, then cable the second Ethernet port to the second Mac. Configuration is described in this article:

Is there a way to connect the Thunderbolt to Gigabit Ethernet Adaptor to an iPad 4?

I've never seen any ethernet adapter for the iPad. I carry an Airport Express (any portable router would do, though) if I think I'm going to be in a situation where the only internet access is going to be wired. This happens frequently when I travel in Japan.

After upgrading to Maverick I find my Thunderbolt to Ethernet adaptor no longer works. Network app insists the cable isn't connected but the cable works fine with other pcs (a Raspberry Pi for instance). Any suggestions?

If you have access to the Companies Intranet then the Ethernet connection is working just fine. The computer is getting a valid IP address from the companies DHCP server.
You need to take this up with the IT staff as it seems whatever IP your computer is getting it is being block from going out to the internet.

Thunderbolt to Ethernet Adaptor makes fans go crazy

I have a late 2012 Retina Macbook Pro.
Just bought the thunderbolt to gigabit ethernet adaptor.
Works like a charm, except that every time im downloading large files or uploading large files... the fans on the macbook start spinning at the highest speed.
anyone else share the same problem?

There are may glitches with the Retina model MBPs. you have found one of them, if not more. It has to do with the way Apple has set the sleep mode system in the firmware and or OS.
There is a long thread on this type of Deep Sleep mode problem someplace on this forum.

MBA, 24" Cinema Display, & USB Ethernet Adaptor

I'm considering getting a MBA, however, I don't want to have to run it on wireless at home. Will the built in USB hub in the 24" Cinema Display run the SuperDrive and the USB Ethernet Adaptor?
