What is Express like for audio editing ?

Think it is abit rubbish that Apple don't produce a stand alone audio editor. But I found Wave Editor which uses layers like photoshop and is just amazing for $79
I have moved over from using soundforge on Windows PC. I am wondering about getting Express and already have a licence for Ableton 6.
I am looking into Express but wondered how you rated it for audio editing Vs dedicated Editor ?
I could download a trial I guess, but I have so many on the go atm.

Thanks for the info. Do you know if there is a trial ? I know they did one for 7 but can't find it.
I love ableton to bits but need some thing more like logic too, I don't find ableton's arrangement view that intuative atm, and am not big on the timestretching aspect of ableton as impairs on the quality of your end mix I find, even with care choice of algorithms.

There are no upgrades for student editions. You simply buy a fresh license at the discounted price.

Whats the best software for photo editing and creating product catalogues that can be saved as PDF's

You are asking two different questiions:
    1. What's a good photo editor? Answer to that here is probably obvious.
    2. What's a good desktop publishing/page layout program for creating PDF files for production? Answer, not PSE. It's a photo editor, not a page layout program.

  • GB for Audio Editing - Is this right for me?

I'm brand new to MAC, and produce a podcast. I have been using a PC and Adobe Audition for a while for my editing.
GB looks great for multi-track MIXING, but for editing, I'm totally lost. The majority of what I need to do is to cut small pieces out (the silence, the 'ummmms', etc) and sometimes I need to do this on a single side of the channel (left or right). Or better yet, split the left & right channels and edit them separately.
None of this seems possible, and if it is, I can't find any instructions or tutorials on any of it.
I record completely outside of the computer, using a pair of condenser mics, a compressor, a mixer and a samson zoom H4 recorder which records a single stereo track, one mic on the left, one on the right.
After recording I will pull the file over to a computer via a SD mem card. The files are in .wav format.
Any suggestions or help would be greatly appreciated. I know that in GB I could record directly to it, but that isn't an option. I need it for editing an audio file...
    TIA.
    -Jeff

Thanks. Kinda ***** as I was double-whammied when I found out that Audition wasn't available on mac and now GB won't really work for me.
Good news though is that I found an app that looks like it'll work for what I need and it's reasonable. "Sound Studio" for a mere $80...
    Thanks again.

  • What is iMac like for gaming?

Hi. What is it like to play games on a iMac?

Overall good but if you want state of the art gaming performance then you should have a dedicated gaming PC with top of the line graphics cards, RAM, etc... However if gaming isn't your #1 priority in life then you would probably be very happy gaming with an iMac, there are a variety of specifications available so just choose the one you want and order it. One primary advantage a Mac has over a PC is it can run both OS X and MS Windows, they can even run them simultaneously if you use virtualization software such as VMWare Fusion or Parallels.

  • H.246 (MPEG-4) versus .AVI? Which one should I use? What should I use for audio?

Hey guys, I'm fairly new to AAE. Actually, I've had the trial for only 8 days now. I just got a capture card so I could record BF3 gameplay on the Xbox 360. I've spent sometime doing missions and whatnot, recording gameplay, so I could bring it into AAE and edit it. Now I just heard that AAE is more compatible with MPEG-4 files than with .AVI files. I'm not sure about this, but I do know that when I RAM preview with .AVI files or MP3 files, the audio is always cutting in and out.
My question is, should I record and edit my gameplay with H.246 (MPEG-4) or should I be using .AVI files instead? What's important to me is the quality of the video, and how well it works with AAE (I don't want it to flicker in/out)
But also, what's the best audio file format? As in, best quality and compatibility, also I don't want audio being cut in/out when I preview it.
    Thanks!

Use AVIs. H.264 is a compressed delivery format and not necessarily meant for editing. Same for you MP3 - AE is simply rubbish at dealing with them. Use WAV instead. Do a little reading here on this forum. These topics have been covered many times.

  • What is the shortcut for overwrite edit when F10 won't work?

My keyboard is set to all the Apple functions and I can't use F9 or F10 for overwrite and insert edits. What is another shortcut way to do this? Can find in any manuals? Driving me nuts. I often just drag the clip but that won't work for music clip I have.

Hey! That's great for you! But, it didn't work for me. I'm having the exact same issue and it's driving me nuts! I went into to Preferences and changed the Expose and Dashboard F keys and I still could not use the overwrite audio F10.
Anything else I should check? Please help.

  • How about the statement of regular expression like for this

I what to get varians String array by one regular express for the statement like:
    ${user} like play ${game} in ${date}
I want to get String[] as {"user","game","date"} by one regex, by str.split(regex). I tried many times but always fail to get the result I expected. May it be possible to meet the destination?
    thanks in advance
    Frederick

why StringBuffer was using here?So one could split the pattern into multiple lines. But it just occurred to me that one could just use string concatenation, which would look better. I don't know why I bothered to use StringBuffefer.
    e.g.:
    String pattern =
        "^" +           // the start of a string
"(dog)|(cat)" + // match either "dog" or "cat" at the start of the line
"\\s*" +        // match an arbitrary amount of whitespace
"$";            // but don't allow anything other than whitespace after dog or cat
    Pattern p = Pattern.compile(pattern);
Pattern p = Pattern.compile("^(dog)|(cat)\\s*$");> isn't this look more simpler and better?
In this case, yes. I was looking for a way to make regexps more explicit, with whitespace and comments, for more complicated cases.
But those double quotes and plus signs add ugliness of their own, so a regexp would have to be pretty complex before it would be an improvement.

  • What is the standard for audio balancing in FCP?

    Hi Guys,
I am cutting a feature film shot on DVX 100, they used boom mic to capture the audio,
the sound man control the sound around -18, however, the boom mic captured dialogus with the ambiance sound as well, for some particular outside scenes, the environment sound is pretty loud and noisy.
What I did was to minor the audio level slight lower, bring the level of audio to -2 (as original level is 0 from the audio clip, not the audio meter) however, after I did that, I preview the video from a sony monitor, and audio I connected to the sony monitor through the firewire ( so... the sound is not from my Rokit speakers, it's from the monitor) the problem came out, the level is too low, if normal video s audio level on the monitor, I will probably set 40, this feature film, i need to bring up to 70....
I predict that there must be something wrong with it for outputting. however, if i keep the audio level higher, the environment ambiance sound will be very loud.
    so my question is
should I keep the audio level low for safety reason?
or should I just bring up the level for just in case audience cant hear it? ( the the ambiance will be noisy
How do deal with this problem?
Any suggestions or advises are highly appreciated!
    Hiro

If the ambience is something like an AC unit or other steady source, you could try and find a section of the audio that is only the ambience, sample it and try suppressing it/subtracting it from your audio track with soundtrack pro. This would improve your desired audio to ambient noise ratio.

  • What are the options for creating editable output

We are using PeopleSoft XML Publisher. I need to create inventory reports that list assets and include columns for user input. Currently we generate them using an rtf template, a query data source and print them out in pdf format. Rather than print the reports and handwrite their comments and counts, the users would like to be able to enter them directly onto the reports.
The data fields need to be read-only and the user fields need to accept user input. I am under the impression that this may be possible if i use a PDF template. Is anyone doing something similar? Are there any other options?

I think that Predixion Insight is the easiest tool to use and is very powerful.

  • What is part number for Limited Edition (Canad

I want to order ONLINE from a Canadian retailer a Zen Micro. Does anyone know how or if I can still find a limited edition model with the free battery in Canada? I want to order ONLY from a Canadian online retailer, not US.
I see different part numbers and differing prices. Is there any way to distinguish which is which by just the part number? Are these limited edition models still available up here in Canada?
I've read on this forum that people have bought their Zen Micro Limited Edition from Futureshop. But at $350 CND, I'd rather buy a non-limited edition for $30 and just pay the $50 or so for a new battery at a later time. I'm using prices I've found online for this example.
    Thanks in advance,

    Thanks link247.
A lot of other places also price match but FS may be about the least hassle place. Plus I think they have a 0% policy on the price difference. At least their online store does. There are a couple of dealers in BC that seem to sell the Micro for under $290 and I wonder if this is grey-market stock. Then again, I don't know if that matters. Atic Computers has the white model for $288 but I hear awful things about dealing with them.
One thing to keep in mind is that if you li've in Ontario and buy from a place like Computrak in BC, you don't have to pay PST. Right off this saves you aprx. $24 and this is why I'm almost certain NOT to buy in Ontario. Although you did get a sweet deal for sure! :-)
When did you get your Micro? And do you happen to know the part number from the box or receipt for your L.E. ?
    Cheers!

  • Open Final Cut Pro project in Logic Pro for audio editing

I want to open a Final Cut Pro project i'm working on into Logic Pro without having to export my large FCP projects to video all the time. Is there any way of doing this?

Thanks for replying to my question, I did mean Logic Pro but I'm relatively new to these programs. What's the difference with Soundtrack Pro and Logic Pro exactly? If I understood you correctly, Logic Pro would be the program I need since I need to create audio from scratch. Just to be more clear again, I want to see my video while composing audio at the same time but without having to export my video all the time since it takes long, being a big file. Thanks again for the reply.

  • What Kind Of Connectors for Audio Out?

My Mac Pro is a 2-2.8g Quad, and it's kind of in a position right now where I can't clearly see, so can anyone tell me what kind of connector I need to grab the audio out (NOT DIGITAL) and connect it to another device?
    Thanks
    Tom

    These are Stereo-capable.
Stereo jacks have a tip and two rings.
Mono jacks the same size and shape have one tip contact and only one ring contact.

  • Powerful laptop for video editing?

Sometimes people ask what laptop to buy for video editing. My laptop has the following specification.
1 gigabyte graphics memory (NVIDIA GeForce GT 620M)
Intel core i7 3632qm CPU (quad core, 2.2 GHz with maximum 3.2 GHz).
5400 RPM hard drive in two partions C: and D:
    6 gigabytes with RAM
I use Windows 8.1, with Windows settings for maximum performance.
I have spent more than 200 hours editing a project which is about 110 minutes long.
RAM, graphics card respectively CPU have been no limitation. But my hard drive must often work hard.
Partition C: became full with media cache files since my project is so big. So in the future I will put the media cache files on partition D: For this project I solved the problem by deleting those media cache files which were no longer needed.
Alright, I have been forced to split up my long project into smaller pieces. So I have projects which each contains a few hours with raw material, out of which there is about 10 minutes on the timeline. For each project I export a video file. These files I import into another project where I join them into one video file which is 110 minutes long.
I find it inconvenient when PE 12 needs more than one minute to load a particular project. This is the reason why I split up my long project into smaller pieces.
To avoid confusion, I never use video transitions. And I only use video effects when I am forced to correct poor footage. So in each project there is at most about a minute of footage to be rendered. I mean, even though I don't render, PE 12 works well.
I hope this will help those who need to buy a laptop for editing.

    Thanks for the comments.
Sorry for this delay in answering. I didn't check if there was any comment because I didn't expect any.
    a.
I should had expressed myself differently.
No, I have not monitored CPU usage because it is the hard drive which limits how fast my laptop works.
There is one advantage with having a track for video expanded rather than collapsed. One can see what one has already put on the timeline without moving the cursor. If one waits until the computer has generated pictures on the timeline.
But I realized that with my laptop one has to wait uncomfortably long for those pictures to be created. So it is faster to move the cursor to that position where I have guessed that I have already put the footage I want to find.
    b.
I have not tested multiple monitors. Neither would I bother if CPU usage increased because it is the hard drive, not the CPU, which limits how fast my laptop works.
    c.
I have not used Premiere CC so I have not checked the hardware requirements.
Unless I have misunderstood something, Premiere CC has somewhat higher hardware requirements than Premiere Elements. Understandable since professional camcorders use higher bit rate (more information per second) than cheaper camcorders.
So presumably I would be forced to split up my projects in even smaller parts to make everything manageable. On the other hand, using footage which is intra frame compressed rather than inter frame compressed would mean that the hardware needs to work less hard, so perhaps it would be possible to edit long projects.
At the same time, some professional programs can work with proxy files, and in that case the high bit rate for professional footage would be no problem.
Besides, unless something is wrong with my memory, Edius has somewhat lower hardware requirements than Premiere CC, so possibly that program would be more relevant for usage on my laptop.
Higher bitrate means that there is room for fewer hours with raw material on my single hard drive. So with 100 Mbps I would in practice be limited to creating movies which are at most about 40 minutes long.
One advantage with professional video editing software is that it can edit video with higher resolution than 1920*1080. But I doubt that would work on my laptop.
    Thanks for your congratulations.
Yes it works. And after posting in another forum in my native language, another film maker commented that he had edited on a laptop with even less powerful CPU. For him it was also the speed of the hard drive which limited how fast his laptop worked.
