  • What "mountable file system" is xcode3.2.6 looking for on install?

I just updated my Mac Mini to OS X 10.6.8 after dowloading the xcode3.2.6+iOS DMG file. But now I am a little puzzled by the error message I get when I double-click to install: it fails with the message, "no mountable file systems".
I can find no special instructions in the readme file (downloaded separately), and I thought that it was only in the distant past that Apple required installs to be done from a separate filesystem. Hence the question: what "mountable file system" is it looking for? It is already ON a mounted file system.
Now speaking of that readme: when it starts talking about install from download (p4-5), it assumes the download yielded a .mpkg file. But I did not get this: I got a .dmg. Are they simply assuming the user knows the trick to get from DMG to MPKG?

You can check the disk image using the 'hdiutil' tool at the command line (Terminal.app):
    hdiutil verify /Users/JD/Downloads/xcode_4.2_and_ios_5_sdk_for_snow_leopard.dmg
... (specify the path of your disk image that you downloaded). There should be several lines of output, and if the image is good, the last line should look something like this:
hdiutil: verify: checksum of "/Users/JD/Downloads/xcode_4.2_and_ios_5_sdk_for_snow_leopard.dmg" is VALID
... if it's not good, you'll see a variety of complaints and issues spit out.
The files are served and downloaded via the HTTP protocol which doesn't provide any particular validation on data transfer outside of what little negotiation happens at the TCP protocol layer. There's no Firefox plugin that can fix that, nor option to wget.
If it took 11 hours to download, that's < 44kbps. You might want to choose something other than a dial-up connection to download such large files. It wouldn't be at all surprising for there to be a minor error over such a connection.

  • What does this message mean? "Warning: SUID file "System/Library/CoreServices/RemoteManagement/ARDAgent.app/Contents/MacOS/ARDAg ent" has been modified and will not be repaired"

What does this message mean? "Warning: SUID file "System/Library/CoreServices/RemoteManagement/ARDAgent.app/Contents/MacOS/ARDAg ent" has been modified and will not be repaired"  I get this when I try to repair permissions in disk utility.

It's an innocuous error you can ignore. It was introduced with previous updates for ARD and/or Java before Lion. These are messages, not errors. They will cause no harm, and they will be repeated each time you repair permissions.

    Hi Kirby,
I attached the UltraMax Plus with a USB cable. The UltraMax powers the cable so power is not an issue. I can open other files. Also, there is 500GB of files on the drive so I cannot re-format it. Although, I noted I could import the entire Aperture Library. However, I do not want to create a duplicate on my machine because that would be defeating the purpose of the external drive.

  • What company can retrieve photos from a micro sd card? Another casualty of SD Card blank or has unsupported file system

I have a Droid X with a sandisk 16gb micro sdhc class 4 installed.  This card has been in use for about a year and wasnt even half full.  I was playing music on thanksgiving and all of a sudden the music stopped.  I thought hmm, It must be doing one of its many reboots.  It wasnt shut off but was on my home screen and the music player had closed.  I went to my music and the songs were still listed.  I tried to play one and got the error message that i  cannot play this file.  I tried again and the songs disappeared and up came "SD Card blank or has unsupported file system" on the top bar.  I tried to view files on the card on my phone and on my computer by using an sd adapter with no luck.  I popped another card into my phone and it worked with no error message and i could mount and unmount the card and view the picture I took when viewing the new card on my computer.  I have a 9 year old daughter who suffers from multiple chronic illnesses and have probably 200 photos on my card of her including an extensive surgery and recovery earlier this year.  If a professional can retrieve my photos, I would like to know more.  Im coming up on my contracts end and this has me ready to zip up a life vest and get on another boat altogether. I have seen hundreds post about this on boards but I hope this can be resolved.  Thanks in advance.

        Hi Matt73,
I use my phone to store all my precious moments too and I can just imagine how frustrating it must be to have memory card issues like the ones outlined in your post. I see that you have tried different things to retrieve your files from your memory card to no available. It appears that your SD memory card somehow became corrupted and most likely the data in it is now lost (sorry). While not a common issue, there is always a possibility for memory cards and any other memory device to fail. SanDisk Memory cards carry 5 year warranty, to get a replacement please contact SanDisk at 866-726-3475. Their hours of operation are 8:00 a.m. - 7:00 p.m. PT Monday to Friday or by email at [email protected] at your convenience.
I recommend backing up your media (specially pictures) on a regular basis to your computer or to an online service to protect those special memories, I personally have my phone setup to automatically save the pictures I take to my Google  account and even if lost my phone I have a copy of all my pictures online. There are several website that allow you to sync your phone to upload pictures automatically. Please consider a similar option going forward.
On a personal note, I hope that your little girl's health improves that all those chronic illnesses are kept under control by your physician; I have 2 kids and I Know what is like when they don't feel well. Have a great day!

  • Store large volume of Image files, what is better ?  File System or Oracle

I am working on a IM (Image Management) software that need to store and manage over 8.000.000 images.
I am not sure if I have to use File System to store images or database (blob or clob).
Until now I only used File System.
Could someone that already have any experience with store large volume of images tell me what is the advantages and disadvantages to use File System or to use Oracle Database ?
My initial database will have 8.000.000 images and it will grow 3.000.000 at year.
Each image will have sizes between 200 KB and 8 MB, but the mean is 300 KB.
I am using Oracle 10g I. I read in others forums about postgresql and firebird, that isn't good store images on database because always database crashes.
I need to know if with Oracle is the same and why. Can I trust in Oracle for this large service ? There are tips to store files on database ?
    Thank's for help.
    Best Regards,
    Eduardo
    Brazil.

    1) Assuming I'm doing my math correctly, you're talking about an initial load of 2.4 TB of images with roughly 0.9 TB added per year, right? That sort of data volume certainly isn't going to cause Oracle to crash, but it does put you into the realm of a rather large database, so you have to be rather careful with the architecture.
    2) CLOBs store Character Large OBjects, so you would not use a CLOB to store binary data. You can use a BLOB. And that may be fine if you just want the database to be a bit-bucket for images. Given the volume of images you are going to have, though, I'm going to wager that you'll want the database to be a bit more sophisticated about how the images are handled, so you probably want to use [Oracle interMedia|http://download.oracle.com/docs/cd/B19306_01/appdev.102/b14302/ch_intr.htm#IMURG1000] and store the data in OrdImage columns which provides a number of interfaces to better manage the data.
    3) Storing the data in a database would generally strike me as preferrable if only because of the recoverability implications. If you store data on a file system, you are inevitably going to have cases where an application writes a file and the transaction to insert the row into the database fails or a the transaction to delete a row from the database succeeds before the file is deleted, which can make things inconsistent (images with nothing in the database and database rows with no corresponding images). If something fails, you also can't restore the file system and the database to the same point in time.
    4) Given the volume of data you're dealing with, you may want to look closely at moving to 11g. There are substantial benefits to storing large objects in 11g with Advanced Compression (allowing you to compress the data in LOBs automatically and to automatically de-dupe data if you have similar images). SecureFile LOBs can also be used to substantially reduce the amount of REDO that gets generated when inserting data into a LOB column.

  • What is HFS case sensitive file system

What is HFS case sensitive file system?

    FlowerChick,
a HFS case-sensitive filesystem would allow you to have files that differ only by case in the same folder; for example, you could have different files named “FlowerChick” and “flowerchick” in the same folder. On a case-insensitive filesystem, that wouldn’t be allowed.

  • What is the minimum file system access needed to run ODI 10.1.3.4.0 client?

    Hi ODI discussion folks,
I have a couple of questions from an Oracle partner that I'm trying to find a definitive answer for if possible. The partner is setting up ODI 10.1.3.4.0 for a customer who insists that the absolute minimum amount of access to the file system is granted due to corporate security policies.
I have checked the bundled ODI documentation but couldn't really find anything about file system permissions needed to run the ODI client. I was pointed towards the "Setting Up Security for an Integration Project — What to Consider" document but this does not mention a great deal about how much access to the file system is needed for the ODI client to function.
What the partner is asking is the following:
"1. What are the minimum file/folder permissions needed for the ODI client installation? I'm installing at xxxxx
and their machines have to be locked down as much as possible.
    2. Say you have 3 users all wanting to run integrations etc and the Master and Work
repositories have been set up. An admin installs the ODI client but doesn't
create the connection to the Master repository. What are the minimum
file/folder permissions required on the client machine to:
    a) create the connection to the repository
    b) run any subsequent integrations?"
If anyone can advise on this then that would be much appreciated.

    Hi Craig,
    How are you?
Let me try to contribute a little....
    1) The minimum requirement is for its own installation directory, there is no reason to have access to other directories unless if it is necessary to read files from some other directory at the client
    2) Again only to its own install directory. The connection setting is recorded at \bin install directory. After that, all information are recorded at repository, there is no client work.
Be free to contact me by email or phone if you have any new doubt. You can get my email from my profile.
    Does it respond your doubts?

As long as the report ends up with 'Permissions repair complete' then, as far as permissions go, you are fine. You can ignore the various statements in the report:
Permissions you can ignore on 10.5 onwards:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1448
Using 'should be -rw-r--r-- , they are lrw-r--r--' as an example, you will see the that the permissions are not changed, but the | indicates a different location. This is because an update to Leopard onwards changed the location of a number of system components.
Poster rccharles has provided this description of what it all means:
    drwxrwxrwx
    d = directory
    r = read
    w = write
    x = executeable program

  • What is virtual file system in sharepoint, where are the site pages stored?

I came across this paragraph in Inside Microsoft SharePoint 2010; page 126 :-
When SharePoint Foundation provisions the Proposals document library,it creates a folder named Proposals at the root of the site and then it creates a child folder named Forms.
Inside the Forms folder, it creates a set of site pages with names such as DispForm.aspx, EditForm.aspx, AllItems.aspx, and Upload.aspx. The reason that SharePoint Foundation creates site pages inside the Forms folder for each
new list and document library is that these site pages will provide users with the forms they will use to add and manage content.
    My question is that:-
    1) What us the root of the site means?
    2) Are the pages for edit/add/allitems created in filesystem OR in the content database?
3)Suppose we create new sitepages, then where are they stored? In filesystem or in content db?

    Hi,
For All above queries the data and site pages are stored in content database
Root folder: A folder created for the document library under the web (sub site) and another folder created as child folder named Forms. Site pages are created in SharePoint content database
SitePages(Add/display/edit): These pages are created in SharePoint content database
Note: The SharePoint will not create any physical aspx page OR folder in the file system while creating document library.
    Hope this will help you.
    Senthilrajan Kaliyaperumal
    But the book mentions that:-
When SharePoint Foundation provisions the Proposals document library,it
creates a folder named Proposals at the root of the site and then it creates a child folder named Forms.
    Is
this wrong? Are the folders created in filesystem or content db? If the files are not supposed to go into the filesystem, then why are the folders created?

  • What file system to use in exporting from cs3 HD

Hi just a quick thank you for the information that I have received from this forum. Being from a small community this service is well appreciated.
My question is that okay so now I want to export my project and I need to know if there is a file system I can save it to, to be able to bring it back into premier if I so choose. The work flow I use in Premier especially with 2hr plus projects, with all the layering, slo mo etc bogs the project down, when I edited sd I would export half as a movie, edited second half and render to movie and combined both files together to create the long movie. In hd I don't understand the file system I could use, I am shooting sony hd hvr z7u shooting 1080i. So what file system and should it be mpeg or h264. Does Premiere support a workable file system.
    Thanks
    Joan

If I were you, I would use MPEG-2. Match all the output options to that of your origional footage. I see that your camera shoots HDV, so set the bitrate to 25Mbps or higher. If you have any more questions feel free to ask.

  • What's so hard about the file system?

I've heard that the file system is hard to understand/navigate recently. I heard Jobs mention it yesterday in the keynote.
I just don't get it. Since OS X they've made a home folder. That's pretty simple. Is this a case of catering to people
who are very new to computers?
I made a folder called Art. In it are all my works in folders with appropriate names. When I save a file from Illustrator
and put it in the art folder the next time I save it goes in that same folder unless I change the path. That's pretty
    straight forward, no?
    Thanks for any insights.

    > Is this a case of catering to people who are very new to computers?
My guess is yes.  Apple has been getting a lot of new Mac users via the iPhone, iPad, iPod, and iPod Touch devices which do not expose the file system to the user.
It is my guess that based on support calls, they figured if they minimize the need to understand and navigate the file system, they will have happier customers, where that is an over all average and not necessarily specific cases of experienced users.
One area where new users get confused is where should I put something?  There are different existing folders, but they can create their own.  Should they use an existing folder, or create their own.  Documents sometimes becomes a dumping ground until it becomes difficult to find things.  Should the user create a new home level folders or subfolders in Documents?
There are 3 Library folders (assuming you know where to look), what goes where.  home folder -> Library is not used consistently by all applications which can confuse users that figure out how to find something for application X, only to have application Y store it differently.
Besides you cannot argue with the success of the iPhone, iPad, and iPod Touch, and Apple does look at its bottom line and everything there is telling them "Less is More".
