What is Firefox doing to provide a first line of defense against Trojan horse programs, including Trojans sent in spearphishing attacks.

Help against hackers

Phishing and malware attachments/downloads are serious problems.
Firefox has only limited anti-malware features. The built-in download manager can integrate (at least on Windows) with your existing antivirus software. Some destinations may be blocked based on reputation information from StopBadware.
For protection against deceptive messages and dangerous files, you may want to look into add-ons and third party security products.

  • Firefox does not allow my on-line bank account security phrase to be retained - why?

    Hello,
    I have successfully used MS Internet Explorer to log into my on-line bank account in the past. Since changing to Firefox my login process has become incumbered. The bank requires a security phrase as a part of an initial personal PC to bank account security setup measure, which security phrase information is supposed to be retained on my PC for subsequent logins into my on-line account. I still need to enter the usual username and password, but for some reason Firefox does not allow the security phrase information to be retained on my PC and so I have to enter the security phrase each time I log in. I called my bank's IT department and together we tried changing some Firefox settings, but none of them fixed this problem. I also have AVG and Super Antispyware loaded on this PC.
    Do you have a solution to this problem?

    The arrow to open the tab history of the Back and Forward buttons has been removed in Firefox 4.
    Use one of these methods to open the tab history list:
    * Right click on the Back or Forward button
    * Hold down the left mouse button on the enabled Back or Forward button until the list opens
    You can look at this extension:

  • Recently, I updated to Firefox 4.0.1, and the new version disabled several of my programs, including my anti-virus. How can I go back to the previous version of Firefox?

    I want to go back to the previous version of Firefox, because the new version (4.0.1 I think) that I downloaded disabled several of my programs, including my anti-virus program, because they were incompatible with the new version of Firefox. How do I get back to the previous version of Firefox and re-enable the disabled programs?

    Some gestures have been removed in Firefox 4.
    You can restore the zoom feature by changing the values of the related prefs on the <b>about:config</b> page.
    browser.gesture.pinch.in -> <b>cmd_fullZoomReduce</b>
    browser.gesture.pinch.in.shift -> <b>cmd_fullZoomReset</b>
    browser.gesture.pinch.out -> <b>cmd_fullZoomEnlarge</b>
    browser.gesture.pinch.out.shift -> <b>cmd_fullZoomReset</b>
    browser.gesture.pinch.latched -> <b>false</b>
    To open the <i>about:config</i> page, type <b>about:config</b> in the location (address) bar and press the "<i>Enter</i>" key, just like you type the url of a website to open a website.<br />
    If you see a warning then you can confirm that you want to access that page.<br />
    You can use the Filter bar at to top of the about:config page to locate a pref more easily.

  • Firefox does not load the first time I click on it -- a script appears which ischrome://webvideodownloader/content/utils.js:131 -- when I stop this script running I can then load firefox -- how can I keep this script from running

    I can still load it with the script running or attempting to run in the background but it makes firefox tremendously slow. After I click on stop running the script then everything seems to be ok.
    how do I get the script not to run in the first place.

    In Firefox the use of the term chrome refers to the user interface and other elements that are not part of the web pages.
    See https://developer.mozilla.org/en/Chrome
    Your problems seems to be caused by the GreaseMonkey extension.<br />

  • Firefox does not open after first try

    When i click on firefox, it does not open. After Several times trying, it might open. Sometimes I have to click open new tabs to open this. Why is this happening?

    Hi,
    You can try to right-click and Unpin the icon from the taskbar and then Pin it back from the Firefox [http://kb.mozillazine.org/Installation_directory installation directory], usually C:\Program Files (x86)\Mozilla Firefox\.
    Another possible reason could be that the installed security software is delaying the start (McAfee??). You can try to fully trust Firefox and its related processes/files in the different McAfee configuration areas (e.g. process/sub process control, file modification, HIPS etc.). You can also try to disconnect the internet connection, temporarily disable McAfee, restart the computer and check.

  • Firefox does nothing when I first open it.

    All that I usually see is, in the location bar, is "about:*"!! this problem has gone too long now.

    It seems that "about:*" is set as your home page, for some reason. Try [[How to set the home page|How to set the home page]].
    Also, it appears that you are running a very outdated version of Firefox. Mozilla will not continue to give you security updates, and many websites are considering dropping support for Firefox 2.0. Consider updating to [http://www.mozilla.org/firefox/ Firefox 6], or, if you prefer the older version, [http://www.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/all-older.html Firefox 3.6]

  • Firefox does not load the website when clicking a hyperlink in another program

    I am using Firefox 5.0.1 in Snow Leopard 10.6.8. When I click on a hyperlink in another program, Firefox launch but show me a blank page, instead of the web page of that hyperlink. This only happen if Firefox is not launched prior to clicking the hyperlink. This mean, if I am already using Firefox (Firefox is opened) and I click on the hyperlink in other program's document, Firefox will launch that web page. Is there any setting that I need to do?

  • Firefox caught 10 Trojan-backdoor programs- message; "Install Security Defender 898.exe" . I attempted to Install but Avast stopped download. Is this SecurityDefender sanctioned by Firefox?

    I am still running Win XP on a Dell desktop using Avast Antivirus (licensed ).
    I opened a link while working in my g-mail account.

    '''''Security Defender''''' is malware posing as anti-malware.
    Read and understand all of the following article.
    *If you can not access the article or can not download the recommended removal software on the infected computer, then you must go to a non-infected computer to do so and transfer the recommended removal tools to the infected computer via CD/DVD or on a USB/thumb/pin/jump drive.
    *See --> http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/virus-removal/remove-security-defender
    Security Defender is not associated in any way with Mozilla or Firefox. It is an infection that you picked-up on the internet by downloading/installing something, by clicking on an e-mail link or through a "drive-by" download which required no action on your part. Keep your firewall and anti-virus/anti-malware application(s) updated; '''''they are your first line of defense'''''.
    Firefox will protect you from '''''known''''' malware and phishing sites, but new ones are created every day and it takes a while to discover the new sites. Some malware sites are created and then disappear within a matter of days. Some legitimate sites become infected with malware or malware links and the owners of the sites do not discover the problem for some time.

    You probably have not seen anyone reporting the exact same problem as you. All three crash reports have the same crash signature and as currently ranked 67 it is not the commonest of reasons for a crash.
    I hope you enter your email contact information when reporting crashes. I note you see this crash when using videos, others may possibly see this crash in other circumstances.
    You have already tried the obvious, attempts at a fix so it is now down to wait and see, maybe developers working on the bug will report something or fix it.
    Did you try my suggestion of installing portable ESR ?

    Hello. Since my last firefox update, I have been unable to type an email - the box within which one would usually type does not appear when I press 'reply' to a received email, or press 'compose'. The email provider is '123-reg.co.uk. I have been using both firefox and the provider ['webfusion Ltd/webmail123] successfully for well over a year. The provider says it is a browser problem. I can still add an attachment to the email header, which successfully can be sent, but the recipient gets my standard email 'signature' with font messages and the attachment. Can anyone help? My email addresses are [email protected] [this is the one with the issue] and [email protected] in English

    My daughter has had her Razr for about 9 months now.  About two weeks ago she picked up her phone in the morning on her way to school when she noticed two cracks, both starting at the camera lens. One goes completely to the bottom and the other goes sharply to the side. She has never dropped it and me and my husband went over it with a fine tooth comb. We looked under a magnifying glass and could no find any reason for the glass to crack. Not one ding, scratch or bang. Our daughter really takes good care of her stuff, but we still wanted to make sure before we sent it in for repairs. Well we did and we got a reply from Motorola with a picture of the cracks saying this was customer abuse and that it is not covered under warranty. Even though they did not find any physical damage to back it up. Well I e-mailed them back and told them I did a little research and found pages of people having the same problems. Well I did not hear from them until I received a notice from Fed Ex that they were sending the phone back. NOT FIXED!!! I went to look up why and guess what there is no case open any more for the phone. It has been wiped clean. I put in the RMA # it comes back not found, I put in the ID #, the SN# and all comes back not found. Yet a day earlier all the info was there. I know there is a lot more people like me and all of you, but they just don't want to be bothered so they pay to have it fix, just to have it do it again. Unless they have found the problem and only fixing it on a customer pay only set up. I am furious and will not be recommending this phone to anyone. And to think I was considering this phone for my next up grade! NOT!!!!

    cor-el,
    Thanks for your prompt reply. However, the sources you gave do not seem to apply exactly to my situation. I have attached some screenshots that show what the dialogue box looks like for a pdf download, and what my settings in the Apps panel of Options are. You will note in the first screenshot that I have checked the box to handle this file type automatically; however, the next time I try to download a file of that type, the same dialogue box appears looking exactly like the one shown, so checking the "automatic" option appears to do nothing. The files to be downloaded from my Gmail messages are not generic or altered file types - they are shown as pdf, doc, docx, etc. So while your intent was good, your post did not help. Thanks anyway.

  • I just converted my first pdf to Word (working on a Mac).  Result is total gibberish.  What am I doing wrong?

    I just tried for the first time to convert a pdf to Word.  Result was total gibberish, a bunch of meaningless symbols.  What am I doing wrong?

    You've done nothing wrong. The issue is how the internals (not what you "see") were painted to the PDF page (yes, PDF page content is "painted").
    Export of PDF page content is very much a GIGO process.
    Goodstuff In = Goodstuff Out
    or
    Garbage In = Garbage Out
    Looks like you have the latter.
    Anway - Provided one has a well-formed Tagged PDF (see 14.8 of ISO 32000-1) export is typically rather pleasing.
    Tagged PDF has two core design criteria - support Accessible PDF and support repurpose (aks export / save as other) of PDF.
    For that well-formed PDF you want an ISO 14289-1 (PDF/UA-1) compliant PDF.
    Best is to output the well-formed Tagged PDF from an appropriate authoring application that has robust tag management.
    But that's the job of the content author rather than you.
    About all you can do is to communicate to the PDF provider that they are delivering flawed "goods".
    Be well...
