What is future of DVDs

I have just finished a video of our school production of Wizard of Oz. We create about 100 DVDs, one for each of the students to remember their time on stage. Its about 90 minutes long. In the past I have always burned the master copy from iMovie and then from iDVD. My question is that as we require a DVDs and now the new iMacs do not have DVD burners and no new version of iDVD is out there, What is the future?? I cannot be expected to upload a full musical to the "cloud" I know Apple got it right in relation to floppy disks but what is to replace the DVD?????? Given also that there is a huge difference in the connection speeds available and a 4.7GB DVD content simply could not be uploaded easily.
Thanks
Dave

A very good question. You may receive a variety of opinions, but here in essence is mine:
Why is there no iDVD on my new Mac? How do I get and how do I install it?
https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-3673
I have about 75 family videos on DVDs, some going back 35+ years. It would be nice if future generations could also see them. I therefore store copies of them on Verbatim Archive Quality DVD-Rs, as well as on both my Mac and two separate external hard drives.
It can be hoped that digital media files will be convertable if and when alternative digital codecs get adopted, and thus saved for posterity.
That is as much as one can do.

  • What is the "Content" DVD used for in CS5 Master Collection?

    Hey Everybody,
Sorry--I know there must be some cue I am over looking somewhere, but what is the Contents DVD fo in the 4 disk CS5 Master Collection Installation Pack?  I have installed everything on a new MacBook Pro.  First 3 DVDs are very logical (in terms of what they contain and how to install them), but the 4th one just has a bunch or read-me files in various languages.  Is there something on this disk I need to install?
    Many thanks in advance!

Just some templates and other assorted stuff. Nothing you have to have.

what is the best DVD-ripping software for mac?

Handbrake to copy to avi or mp4(I use it for watching my DVD's on the go, so my battery lasts for a longer time)
I think MP4 is better quallity.
To copy a DVD: simply use Toast (maybe withe popcorn, but I don't use it).
But, be legal! This is a forum, and anyone can see your posts!

  • Recovery Media for Tecra R840 - What size USB or DVD?

What size USB (or DVD media) is needed to create the basic recovery media?  I saw the post for the user who also had MS Office 2010, but what size USB (or DVDs) would be needed to create the basic recovery media (ie, without the Office suite) - a search of the manual failed to provide the answer?
    Thanks - FB

I believe the Recovery Media Creator should specify if you continue to go through it.

  • What are future records in OM ?

Any body any idea what are future records in OM?

    Hi,
I have not heard of any term called future record. But may be if some objects or relationship whose validity starts in future are called future records. To see those records in PPOSE click on "date and preview period" and give the date in future when the relationship exists, it will show up that in the structure.

  • What is the best DVD burner?

What is the best DVD burner for a G4 Dual? Internal or external? Brand? I am having burn problems wherein some burned DVDs do not run. I use a burn speed of 1xDVD with Toast 7 and an image file.
    Thanks,
    Stuart

Many like the Pioneer (DVR-110D) or NEC (ND-3550A) brand. Since you have an MDD, I'd install a new drive underneath the original (if the original drive is still good). My MDD has the original Pioneer DVR-104 and a new DVR-110D. Internal drives are much less expensive that external drives (~$40 for OEM drive versus $179 for boxed external). I was able to get Toast Titanium for $39 (with rebates) and the 110D for $40.

  • What is future of BSP  ? .........

    Hi expert,
Can any one tell exactly  that what is future of BSP ? Currently in which solution's of SAP it is being used . Some people says that it is outdated technology and it will be replace by WD ABAP or WD JAVA.
    Is it True ?

    Hi,
this topic has been discusted several times.
BSP and WebDynpro can live together very good. There are some things, that are not possible in WebDynpro.
    - BSP can be stateless
    - BSP can use all possibilities of the web like Javascript
    - You have a request - response cycle controled by the developer
    - Pure HTML possible
To make clear: WebDynpro is a great and has lots of possibilities, that BSP hasn't. But depending on the project it could be more useful to use BSP.

  • What's a safe DVD ripper to make copy of personal DVD movie and other movies?

What's a safe DVD ripper to make copy of personal DVD movie and then make a copy to another blank DVD?

The easiest way is to use Disk Utility to create a disk image of the DVD; you can then burn that to a blank DVD (and indeed play it using the DVD player).
Insert your DVD. Open Disk Utility and select it in the sidebar (the disk itself, not the drive it's in.) Click 'New Image' in the toolbar.
In the dialog box which opens set 'Image Format' to 'DVD/CD Master' and 'Encryption' to 'none'. This will make an exact copy without re-compressing.
Obviously this will not work on a commercially issued DVD, only on ones you make yourself or which are not DRM protected.

Why is there no iDVD on my new Mac? How do I get it and how do I install it?

To burn a DVD with iDVD from the latest version of iMovie, you have to export the movie using the Export button and select 480p as the size. Open iDVD and start a new project, then drag that exported movie file into the iDVD menu window, avoiding any drop zones you see.

  • What is the best DVD Creator for a Mac Book Pro to replace iDVD?

What is the Best DVD Creator for a Mac Book Pro to replace iDVD?  Have Maverick OS.

I have already looked at other threads in this forum, so 'I venture forth' to ask my question here:
I have a 44 minute carefully edited iMovie with several chapter markers. I dimly recollect that when you 'dump' the entire movie into iDVD (my version is 7.1) it should detect the markers and create buttons to link to specific scenes. Well, the 'dumping' process obviously doesn't work.
How do you get iDVD to recognize the markers and ceate buttons to link?
I can create with iDVD a DVD that will play the movie in its entirety. This is not suitable for my purposes. I need access via a menu to specific scenes.
    Thank you,
    Klaus

  • What does Future.cancel(true) do?

Hi, I have some (a dozen) Callable object which are submitted to the ExecutorService ( talking about jdk5.0 concurrent package), and I want that the threads executing those Callable task last for not so much time: invoking cancel(true) on a Future object returned, will cause the Callable task to end immediatly (or quite immediatly) ?? Or does it depend on what the Callable do inside its call() method?
I asked that question because I would like to stop tasks if they don't end within a certain amount of time, and up to now I didn't find a solution for my problem since what the Callable object do inside their call() method is launching a 3rd-party" algorithm with some parameters.
    thanks
    ciao
    alessio

I've not used the concurrent package in 1.5, but I've used util.concurrent a fair bit in the past.... However, looking at the 1.5 javadocs, I interpret the description for FutureTask#cancel(boolean) as meaning if you call it with "true", and the FutureTasks Callable is currently being executed, the Thread executing it will be interrupted.
Now, whether or not this actually causes your task to actually finish is another story: It depends on what the task does.
If the task is doing something which will stop when interrupted (e.g, waiting on a monitor, doing a NIO select, whatever), then (unless the task explicitly catches InterruptedExceptions and continues anyway...) your task should stop.
However, if its doing something which isn't affected by interrupts (e.g, good 'ole blocking IO) - then you are out of luck.
This is very similar to a question which comes up quite a bit on these forums - "how do I stop a thread performing some task after a certain amount of time". Have a search around the forums - there are probably some much better answers than mine around.

  • Need to transfer project from i movie to DVD, what would be best dvd app to go with iMovie

need to transfer imovie project to dvd...whats the best compatible app for imovie???

There is no acceptable substitute for iDVD.
Apple believes that the entire world has access to fast broadband and wants to distribute home movies to friends and relatives via download (iCloud) rather than mailing them a DVD. The fact that in reality not all users do, has so far had no effect on this policy. If you scream and shout loudly enough down the phone Apple may send you a free copy of iDVD. That worked for some, but is now said to have been withdrawn by Apple. Also, you can complain bitterly here, perhaps suggesting that Apple could have provided a choice between using iCloud and burning DVDs:
    http://www.apple.com/feedback/
Whilst Macs with a Superdrive continue to be able to burn video DVDs, the software for so doing, iDVD, is no longer included in the iLife bundle that comes with OS 10.7 Lion (which also omitted iWeb) or will come with OS 10.8 Mountain Lion. And it is no longer included in the iLife 11 from the online Apple Store: http://www.apple.com/ilife/. Your only solution is to look on Amazon or eBay and try to get an older version that includes iDVD.
However, the vastly more expensive FCPX can burn a DVD without iDVD or DVD Studio Pro involvement, but lack the themes etc of iDVD. Also, of course, there is Roxio Toast.
And if you think Microsoft are any better, their new Windows 8 operating system will not play DVDs, or burn them, unless customers buy an extra upgrade, the company has announced.
In other words, computer manufacturers have declared optical media as dead, long before consumers are ready to stop using them, which is fine as long as they offered us a choice, but they won’t even do that.

  • What size for a DVD on Plasma

I am making a little animation in Motion which I am going to burn to DVD... What size would be the best? It's a 42" Plasma Screen... So is it 1024 x 576? or 720 x 576? I'm on PAL also...

If you are making an animation to be played from a DVD player, then the only format you will render to will be 720x576 anamorphic (squashed horizontally). Create your original project in 1024x576 - 16x9 and render to 720x576 anamorphic. The screen will transform the image back to Widescreen 16x9.
If you could find an HD player or play from a powerful enough laptop you could have a much nicer image quality as you could play a native HD screen height. (1280x720, or 1980x1080)

  • What external read / write DVD drive is best for imac

I have just bought a 27" iMac computer that is not fitted with a DVD read write external drive. Any advice on what I should buy?

There is no "best for Mac."  "Different folks for different folks."  It's all about your personal preference.  Whichever one you decide to purchase, make sure you read all of the reviews.
I personally use a LaCie external burner drive.

  • What region is my DVD?

How do I find out what types of DVDs I can play on my MacBook Pro? I want to buy an Aussie DVD, but I'm in the US and I don't know if the DVD player in my Mac will support region 4 DVDs,

Your optical drive is preset to play Region 1 discs if you bought your machine in the USA. You are permitted five region changes before the drive will lock permanently onto the fifth region you select. So yes, you can play Region 4 DVDs, but you can't just switch regions whenever you like, indefinitely. Before long you're going to be stuck.
