What is generic volume? Cause its annoying me!!!
Hi everyone!!
I recently had my ipod replaced cause the first one had countless problems with it. Anyway, now everytime I try to eject my ipod from itunes it says its in use by another application...but everything is closed, I have no other programs running or music playing. Or...I'll try to disconnect it from the safely remove hardware window, and it has three things I can remove, USB something a-rather, generic volume E:, or Apple ipod...I choose apple ipod but it says the generic volume cannot be stopped now, try stopping it later or some crap like that. Ive had to rip my ipod from the computer a few times cause I just cant disconnect it the proper way! I really don't want to have to do that anymore I'll surely ruin something!!

First of all a generic volume is in basic terms a formatted harddrive that windows sees. the iPod reports to windows its connected but windows also sees the Harddrive in it (The Generic Volume)
Secondly the reason its giving you the "in use by another application" is because even tho you may not have any programs running you can see, there is software/programs in the background running you don't see, the main thing that will cause this is an antivirus program like norton or Mcafee. they run in the background to protect you from viruses. when you connect the iPod the antivirus program running in the background "Grabs" it and watches it for any virus activity. there are also other programs within windows running in the background that will cause this too.
One good way to stop this from happening is to goto iTunes with your iPod connected to the PC and deselecting "Enable Disk Usage". the quickest way to get to this is to rightclick your iPod in the sorce list on the left and select "iPod Options". hit the "Music" sub tab and uncheck enable disk use, you may want to also set your iPod to auto update all songs or selected play list.

The BOM which is created on Client level i.e. without Plant assignment would be a generic BOM which can be used in any plant by extending it that plant.
The BOM which is created using plant is Plant level BOM, which is specific to that plant i.e. that plant is the owner & creator of that BOM so that specific plant will be authorized & responsible to editing it.

Generic Volume in Device manager
My BB is not being recognized in Windows XP SP3. It shows up as a generic Volume. I did recently upgraded my SD memory card to a 8gig. It did recognize it under options, so i do think that it is working properly, as far as the blackberry is concerned.
So, i thought it was a driver issue, and decided to uninstall the BB desktop manager, and reinstall, and that didn't work.
Any thoughts or suggestions?This is funny, so, I resolved my issue, lol. This is what it was. I had a USB driver issue, w/ a software product I installed on my computer. The product is called "Acronis® True Image Home 2009"
Its a backup/recovery software. I got the idea from a post i was browsing after looking up the error " "This Device Cannot Start. (Code 10)"
Under the Generic Volume error code...

Looking up the "Class lower filters", "Class upper filters", "Device upper filters", Device lower
filters".
I found a list of Drivers under, I think, Class Lower Filters. and looked up the programs involved, Acronis was among them... So... I uninstalled Acronis, and the problem was solved...
I posted this follow up to help users and Blackberry/RIM. Hopefully some day they will come up w/ an update so I could run both

I routinely run Maintenance (http://www.titanium.free.fr/pgs2/english/maintenance.html), a free app that—yep, you guessed it!—performs maintenance on your Mac. It uses a mix of maintenance scripts that are built-in to OS X (OS X runs them silently, but this allows them to be run on demand), and some of its own methods for cleaning a Mac to keep it running smoothly.
I've found that Maintenance does help—I definitely recommend it!—but the older my MacBook has become, it seems the less Maintenance can do to mitigate the slowdown that comes with age.

I don't think it's because the hardware is old by today's standards, because in my experience if you reformat any machine it will operate significantly faster, even after restoring all of the software that was removed by the format.
I've become increasingly suspicious about the hard drive's free space's effect on a system's performance. I've always known that it has a noticeable effect—less swap space for virtual memory—but I'm beginning to wonder if the effect of a mostly-full hard drive is much more than I have previously imagined. Just a feeling.

If they can be fixed by a backup-reformat-restore, then I take it they are software (filesystem) based problems. If so, why can't software solve the problem without a reformat?
Disk utility can and does repair permissions and basic disk errors. However it does not rebuild directory data.

I think this is your main issue. Try moving your itunes and movie to an external drive then see how your mac performs.
Also a good way to reclaim some space is to delete all the language localisations you dont use. It is amazing that iWeb alone can install a few 100megs of foreign language templates that you will never use.
I used to use Mike Bombich's delocalizer to do this but that app is not longer available so I use monolingual now.
edit, as you have macbook you are lucky in that it is really straightforward to install a bigger internal hard drive.
You can now get 5000GB 2.5 inch sata hard drives. You could take out the old drive hook that up to a usb to sata cable, install a bigger hard drive. then connnect the usb cable to your mac. Then boot from your Leopard Disk then use disk utility clone your old drive onto your new drive.

I don't regularly use any apps beyond Windows Live, Facebook, Skype etc. but app crashes are becoming frequent and this recent blackout was disturbing. What are the potential causes of this and how can I avoid them in the future?
it's weird , your device is not jailbreraked and it crashes? my device is jailbreaked and i almost have the same problems.
look, to avoid these problems:
1- dont open too much apps , and if you do , close them by multitasking menu.
2-try sometimes to turn off and on your device , its like refreshing ( called "respringing" in jailbreaked devices.
if you have the same problem , see an apple specialist.

Can't mount SAN volume 'cause it already shows mounted.. but it's not
after controller 1 had a problem and controller 2 took over, one volume on one client (of 6) won't mount.
all volumes on all other clients OK..
the error says it's already mounted and looking at
ls -al /Volumes
it's there..
looking at df , it's not
looking at finder, it's not
running diskutil unmount , it's not
(or mount -u)
so I can't unmount what's there cause it's not there and I can't mount what's not mounted cause it thinks it already is mounted .
any ideas ??after a MDC fail-over the finder sometimes creates an alias file with the name of the san volume. after all it's a broken alias.
disconnect the FC cable. in the finder (or terminal), go to /Volumes and remove the broken alias file.

Unable to remove dockin station (Envy Split x2) due to Generic Volume
I have had my HP Envy Split x2 for just over 6 months now and the latest problem I am having with it is I can't remove the screen and use it as a tablet, which coincidentally is the main feature of the laptop.
I can of course remove it without using the 'safely remove hardware' button, however I would prefer to be able to do it properly/

I'm using the sync option for when I'm not near my desktop and no matter what it won't work its telling me my account name or password is not correct and it is!
This is from my personal experience:
It almost happens every time I tried to connect with Sync from my Android phone, the window asking me to enter my account name and password always shows up. And if I enter the information, it'll say I have the wrong password, etc. My workaround is to click the "cancel" button. But it does not cancel immediately. The window will stay on for a while (usually a few minutes), then it'll disappear and start connecting to Sync. And it'll connect and sync successfully.
You can try this workaround but you have to be patient to wait for the window to disappear.
I don't know what is the cause of this, but it has happened ever since FF4 for Mobile came out. I have searched around and couldn't find any solutions. -
How can I eject my ipod when neither itunes not the "safe to eject" button will allow it. Itunes says "...cannot be ejected because it contains files that are in use by another application." The safe to eject button says "The device 'generic volume' cannot be stopped because a program is still accessing it." The has never happened before. The only thing new is that I added an iPad yesterday. Thanks.
Go to your computer's System Tray and try ejecting. If you can't eject, there is an application that is trying to access your iPod.
Go to http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/sysinternals/bb896653.aspx and download ProcessExplorer.
Go to http://support.microsoft.com/kb/555665 and follow the instructions under Resolution.
Note that this is a good, general process any time you can't access any file.
In my case an update to RealPlayer installed a program called RecordingManager that was accessing my iPod. -

It's because you are both using the same iTunes Library on your computer and you are both using the same Apple ID on each phone.
One of you must start a new computer user account and get a new Apple ID. Then start operating on the ocmputer from the new account. He/she will also need to restore their phone from the new account and using the new Apple ID. This way everything on each of your phones will remain separate.
