What is going on when a computer appears in my Network without auth?

Can someone help me in understanding how or why someone's computer appears in Finder under Network. Normally, when I look under Network I see Severs and Library, now I am seeing some guy's name with his ibook below Severs. When I highlight it, the only option is connect. I have not tried connecting and I am unsure how this person's computer was added to my Network. It disappears when I restart the computer but appears again after a few hours. I am at home on a WEP encrypted WiFi network (netgear router Model WGT624 v2). I have not given the password to the WiFi to anyone. My firewall is on and I do not have any of the options checked to access the internet but network time. I was using frostwire to download a bittorrent at the same time and browsing the web on firefox.
Is someone connecting to my computer? Can they access my files? Can I tell what they accessed? How can I prevent this from happening now and in the future? Does this have to do with the bittorrent download? If so, are these unsafe ways to download files off the net?
I appreciate any advise or suggestions.
Thanks!

The only way that other computer could show up in your network is if your WEP password has been compromised or you don't really have your wireless router configured properly. None the less you are probably not in any danger of having your computer files stolen or looked at. Another user on your network would still need to login to your machine and would need your user password to do that. You would also have to have personal file sharing turned on. It is off by default.
I would recommend that you immediately change your wireless router settings to WPA or WPA2 for security, if your router supports the protocol. The WEP system was cracked years ago and is easily bypassed by special software. There was even a recent 60 Minutes segment that showed how easy it was to get into a WEP encrypted network. It turns out that banks and credit card companies are still using WEP even though they know, or should know, that it is no longer secure. Scary stuff actually.
If your router doesn't support WPA or WPA2 then get one that does. OS X Tiger supports both WPA and WPA2 out of the box and so do most Mac wireless cards in the last three years at least.

What does it mean when you computer crashes and when you turn it back on it shows you a blank blue screen with a little folder and a question mark in the middle? It's a old imac from 1997.

I don't have original discs that it came with.
Then you still can use the second option with the keyboard combo I posted, called "resetting the PRAM."
Also when you way hold the c key down do you mean turn computer off and turn back on holding the c key?
Yes, or you can simply restart. As you don't have the CDs, this isn't on the plate any more.
The internal backup battery is not expensive and, in most iMacs is user-replacable. If yours has a tray-loading optical drive like this one:
it takes a major teardown to replace the internal battery. If this is the case, you'd be better off to leave the computer plugged in all the time; that eliminates the main reason for having a working battery.
If it has a slot-loading optical drive like this one:
things are much easier. The battery is visible through the RAM access door on the bottom of the computer case. The manual:
    http://manuals.info.apple.com/en_US/iMacG3_2000UserManual.PDF
has sketches of how to access the RAM and therefore the backup battery. Unfortunately, the pdf on the manual goes up sideways on-screen and the RAM instructions are pretty deep into the manual. It's probably easier to scroll (for a while) to the section on adding RAM and print the applicable pages.
When you work on the battery, some sort of non-conductive pliers or large tweezer or forceps help unless you have tiny fingers. Make sure to note the polarity of the old battery and install the new one in the same orientation.
The battery itself is readily available. If price is no oblect, you can get it for a small rasom from Radio Shack Store ("Tandy" outside the US) as part number 23-026.
Online, they are dirt-cheap even after adding shipping. I buy backup batteries form this outfit:

  • I don't know what is going on with my computer

I have no words to explain what is going on with my computer. Its very hard to explain so here is a screenshot of the problem

To take a screenshot hold ⌘ Shift 4 to create a selection crosshair. Click and hold while you drag the crosshair over the area you wish to capture and then release the mouse button. You will hear a "camera shutter" sound. This will deposit a screenshot on your Desktop.
If you can't find it on your Desktop look in your Documents or Downloads folder.
When you post your response, click the "camera" icon above the text field:
This will display a dialog box which enables you to choose the screenshot file (remember it's on your Desktop) and click the Insert Image button.
⌘ Shift 4 and then pressing the space bar captures the frontmost window.
⌘ Shift 3 captures the entire screen.
Drag the screenshot to the Trash after you post your reply.

  • 2011 Macbook Pro suddenly says no space available on start-up disk (plenty available) and USB drawing too much power (only charging phone). What's going on with my computer? No longer able to charge my iPhone 5.

    Hi, all.
Two days ago I was using my computer, a 2011 Macbook Pro, and suddenly got the error message reading "Your Mac OS X startup disk has no more space available for application memory. To avoid problems with your computer, quit any applications you are not using. Closing windows and removing files from your startup disk will also help."
I was only using Google Chrome, nothing was running in the background, and I have 443 of 449.25 GB available (this is after clean-up I conducted after receiving the error message, but probably cleaned up less than 25 GB), so there should be no shortage of space. However, the message kept popping up and I deleted a few files and eventually it went away and hasn't reappeared.
However, last night and then again this morning I have been getting the error message that my USB drive is pulling too much power and has been disable. All that was plugged in was my iPhone 5 on the charger and my computer is also on its charger, so I don't know why this would be an issue, either. I have always charged my phone this way and never had a problem until today.
I haven't been able to charge my phone since. What's going on with my computer?

Regarding the USB, see if zapping the PRAM helps.

Please can someone tell me what is going on when I get this message for the Time Capsule?

Yes, this is because Lion or ML which you are using have lousy networking.
The trick is simply reboot the TC..
Or on Lion use the 5.6 utility and disconnect all users.
For ML sorry.. Apple decided you don't need that function any more!!.

Disabling the computer's antivirus and firewall during the download and update usually resolves the timeout error.

  • What's going on -- when save Japanese charcters to database?

From this Oracle Forum discussion, I learned that when you get
the input value(from html form), you have to do a 'translation',
because of Servlet design behavior, for example:
    translatedParameter = new String(request.getParameter
    ("param").getBytes("ISO-8859-1"),"Shift_JIS").
I tried this, and it does work well- the japanese characters are
    saved properly to Oracle database.
But this works only when I use Jrun Servlet engine+oracle
database. If I use Jakarta-tomcat, I do NOT need to do
any "translation" coding to save to oracle database properly.
what's more, if I use SQL database, I also do not need to do
this kind of decoding no matter what servlet engine is used.(it
do not work if i do the "translation" stuff )
I am confused :since the reason to do the "translation" is
because of the servlet design behavior, it should be required
for all type of servlet engine and database. but the truth is
not. do anyone know what's going on ?

    EDITOR=nano
    sudo visudo
    export EDITOR=nano && sudo visudo
They both open with vi. So how the heck do I edit my sudoers file then ?
    PS:
I'm sure vi is a powerful editor (in the right hands) but it's waaaaay off the KISS principle.
Nano is like 30 times easier. I couldn't even find the QUIT command in vi, lol.

  • What does it mean when your computer says that someone is using your IP address

What does it mean when someone is using your IP address and what should i do...

Expanding on Bob's explanation, be sure you haven't set a manual IP address, thus being the culprit for this problem. In System Preferences / Network / Advanced... / TCP/IP section, Configure IPv4 should be set to Using DHCP. If that is not the case, then some network miscreant has purloined the IP address your Mac was using.
First try clicking on the Renew  DHCP Lease and see if the DHCP server figures it out and assigns a different address. Else, try disconnecting from the network (if on Wi-Fi, turn Wi-Fi off in the previous window, if cabled disconnect the patchcord), wait a little while and reconnect. Then hopefully the DHCP server will realize the address was purloined and assign a different one.

  • What does it mean when ? Mark appears on screen

My computer screen just went blank and a ? Mark appeared and I'm not sure what to do. I can' t get into it nor can I use the mouse.

    Sandy...
It means your Mac cannot find a system folder to boot from.
Startup your Mac while holding down the Option key.
That should launch the Startup Manager window where you can select the startup disk then click Restart.
If the startup disk does not appear, follow the instructions here >  A flashing question mark appears when you start your Mac

  • What is going on with my computer?

Earlier in the year, my power adapter melts, severs the wires inside the cord, and I have to buy a new one because I needed info on my computer for school the next day.
Last week, my battery just stops working. The dreaded black X appears and the battery isn't recognized.
So I call Apple, get a new battery, which in turn, starts showing the same symptoms as earlier in the year. The computer is hotter than ****, it only charges erratically and I can already tell that the cord is going to burn up like before.
I haven't even sent the old battery back yet and this battery is also looking like it's trouble. Do I just keep sending batteries back and forth with Apple until I get one that isn't a gigantic piece of crap?
I like Apple, but this is starting to get ridiculous.
    Macbook

I would call Apple and ask if they can't send you a new laptop. Or fix yours.

  • What does it mean when the computer says "i am hanging here"

I was cleaning off my hard drive to give the computer to charity, and I must have thrown too much away.  Now the computer, when booting, displays a bunch of jibberish writing on the display, ending with the phrase "I am hanging here."  I already backed up the data, so I could clean the hard drive and start from scratch, but I don't know how to begin the boot-up process so that I can put the operating system and "software restore" discs in.  Any suggestions?
    Dick

It means you've made it impossible for the machine to boot properly. You will need to erase the drive and reinstall OS X.
    Erase and Install OS X
    1. Boot from your OS X Installer Disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button.  When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu.
    2. After DU loads select your hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Note the SMART status of the drive in DU's status area.  If it does not say "Verified" then the drive is failing or has failed and will need replacing.  SMART info will not be reported  on external drives. Otherwise, click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
    3. Under the Volume Scheme heading set the number of partitions from the drop down menu to one. Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to GUID (for Intel Macs) or APM (for PPC Macs,) then click on the OK button. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Partition button and wait until the process has completed.
    4. Quit DU and return to the installer. Install OS X.

  • What does it mean when my computer starts making a ticking noise

My computer (im on my brothers computer right now) is making a ticking sound on startup. Then it brings me to a screen that shows a blinking file with a question mark on it. I put in the grey disk and it took me to a screen that asked to choose a destination but there was no options to choose so i quit the installer but then it took me to another screen that had 2 options. The disk that is inside the computer and then network startup. I chose network startup and it then asked me to restart. So i did and now the computer is in the middle of restarting. Now it took my back to the Mac OS X page and is asking me to choose a language again...

More than likely the hard drive is failing or failed.
