What is happening to my contact list?

last night i turn off my iphone and turn it back on and under the app named phone now my contact list is gone and my favorites are only numbers and on and same for the app named contacts and on the app named find friends now all my contacts are listed by their emails
this has happened twice now
what is going on?

Thanks for the question. Let’s check to make sure your Contacts are syncing with a cloud service like iCloud. If Contact syncing was accidentally disabled, the symptoms you are experiencing may occur.

Make sure that iCloud Contacts is on
Tap Settings > iCloud on your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch and make sure that Contacts is on.

I use to have a pull down list of contacts that I could pick and choose (holding down the Command Key) several addressees. I can't find that pull down list. Selecting the + only allows one selection at a time, not several.

I appreciate your response, but I would hardly call it an acceptable work around. Your work around only applies if you "pidgeon hole" folks into distinct groupings or contact lists. I enjoyed and fully utilized the pull down menu in Mountain Lion. I would enter the BCC field, access the pull down menu of addressees, and double click on each one that I wanted to copy into the BCC field. Then, with Maverick's, they diminished the ability to double click and finally came up with a "work around" my having to hold down the Command key as I selected individual contacts to move to the BCC field. That was totally acceptable and I appreciated the escalation and work on the Engineers part. This work around was only produced after my trouble call was elevated to Senior Engineers. Now even the Command key option is gone with Yosemite, and the only response I got from Apple Customer Support was to report it via the "feedback" page. That to me is not unresponsive, but pretty close to it.
It might be an "oversight" but to me is either sloppy programming or perhaps deleting what is thought as infrequently used features to incorporate new features without "growing" the size of the Operating System.
I know i am wrong, but right now I feel it is part of the overall migration plan to an eventually have just one operating system for all Apple platforms, which (tongue in cheek) means if ya can't do it with your thumbs, it can't be important. I am not sure if there are any third party programs out that address this issue, but I'm not a real fan of replacing Apple core programs with 3rd party stuff, but I may have no choice. Bummer!

What's happened with my contacts?

So, you all know with the contacts that when you look at the number it looks like this;
1234 567 890, right? (only an actual number)
For some reason, my iPhone doesn't do that anymore. It does it like all the old phones; 1234567890. Which I don't like.
But since I live in Australia, I'll put +61 at the front and it will do it.
Like this; +61 234 567 890.
Thing is, I don't want the +61 at the front. That's to confusing.. As it already is.
So, what's happened? And how can I fix it? :/

I have no idea what using one email for your Contacts has to do with this?
Log into the account (your old address) to update all apps that were downloaded via the account.

What is happening to the 'Username list'?

Perhaps it is because the Email system is still in transition, but it appears that the very useful 'Username list' is not going to be available.
As I have a number of secondary accounts having such a list is a timesaver; if the new BT version fails to match that it will mean having to enter each of those email addresses individually.
Not a major issue but certainly a major inconvenience.
Is it possible that this feature will appear in some form eventually?

What will happen to my contact/apps when i sync my iphone to a restored pc

I recently reinstalled my OS and deleted all data, but now want to sync my iphone. i saved most of my data to a hard drive but a few things i have forgotten about, contacts/apps. will it delete my contacts now on the the phone? also itunes says it will delete all the apps but is it possible to get those back as they were purchased from my istore account

Many people including myself are losing their previous purchases and cant update broken apps anymore.
As of Sept. 2012 fact is: You keep your previously purchased and downloaded items. But you cant update them anymore after you change to new store.

Do you have the "Green Arrow" icon on one of your toolbars? That usually will list your most recent downloads with a button to open the folder where they are saved.
If you don't have that, you can open the full download list using either:
* Ctrl+j
* Tools > Downloads
* History > Show All History, then click Downloads in the left column
Can you find the download listed there and click the "Open Containing Folder" button?
Are you downloading Flash or Acrobat/Reader?

Iphone 4 automatically sending nuisance/ viral e-mail messages from my yahoo account to members of my phone/ e-mail/ facebook contact list. What can I do to stop this?

This has occurred on 2 different occassions. In both cases, I can not identify a viral email that I would have opened that could have started this as we are very cautious about opening unknown emails, and definately NEVER double click on links that come through in nuisance/ spam type e-mails.
This morning was the second time that it appears my iphone was somehow involved in automatically sending out a mass nuisance message to all my contacts (phone contacts/ facebook contacts/ yahoo contacts). The email contained no message - except for a single link to an unknown destination of course since I refuse to dbl click on it to see what I have sent out to my friends.
This is the second time it has happened. I have posted on facebook to all my friends to not open the message. I have deleted ALL my contacts from both my phone and from yahoo contact list. I even deleted facebook and all it's info. from my phone to remove their contact lists. I don't want this to keep happening to my friends. The only thing I haven't deleted is my phone contacts (phone numbers) but I am assuming it may very well happen again since the automatic message was also sent to my phone contacts. (Not sure how that even happens - an auto email to a phone number?)
I have been reading on this site that it is nearly impossible to get a virus on your iphone - however, what other explanation is there? I don't have a PC - I don't have any Windows products in my home. We own 1 ipad and 2 iphones at the moment. I never access my yahoo account from anywhere but my MAC products. What is happening and how can it be resolved?

if it's a message coming from your yahoo account, it means that your account has been compromised, not your phone itself. i would suggest changing the password for your email account

Email contact list breached and what about this "mac protector"

I use Hotmail as my email address, and safari as my web browser.
Last week someone was able to send an embarassing message to all the folks on my contact list.
How could this have happened?
Also a couple of weeks ago, I received something called "mac protector" unsolicited. It looked very much like an update from Apple, but I deleted it.
Is there any connection between these two incidents, and what can I do to prevent anyone from getting my contact list again.
I'm running the latest MAC OS (10.6.7).

You were right to delete it: Mac Protector and Mac Defender are malware of a quite nasty kind: never ever install programs you are offered. Only obtain programs from legitimate sources. No legitimate program will arrive unannounced, or claim to have 'scanned' your Mac and found something.

New WIn7 installed, prior data wiped. Empty contact lists and calendars. All stillon iPhone. What will synching do? Copy iPhone data to outlook contacts/calendar? or copy enpty PC files to iPhone, essentially deleting last place data is saved?

Will the iPhone data populate the and, essentially, delete my last data resords? I know- prior to disc wipe, records entered either on PC or iPhone would cross copy to the iPhone or PC. That was only 2 -4 records at a time. We're talking >100 records at prresent. Can I jut sync, and not worry amd find all contacts BOTH places?

No reason to be embarassed. You are not alone.
You will need an external drive. If you have a Time Machine drive without enough disk space you can create the clone there however it's advised that you keep your Time Machine and clone on separate drives. If the drive dies you loose both types of backup.
Download and install the clone software. Everyone has their favorite. These are the two most common applications used. I prefer SuperDuper because of it's simplicity in setting up. It's also free for the first clone where with CCC you have to give a Credit Card then cancel if you do not want to keep.
