What is iLife (and other newbie questions

googled this and went to several other sources (wikipedia, apple search) but could not find any good definitions for these terms (at least that a mac newbie could understand)    what is:  1) iOS  2) iLife  3) since i don't own any apple devices other than my mac, could i assume that iOS wouldn't apply to me.
I just recently went from OS X 10.8  > 10.9.1 Maverick  and from garage band 10.6 > 10.9.1    GB 10.9 is a whole new world - hardly anything's the same.  there were plenty of tutorials and videos  for GB 10.6 but i'm having trouble finding one for 10.9.     can anyone point me in the direction of a tut or video .  a link would be most app.

GarageBand 10 is a very different program, it is more similar to Logic than to GarageBand '11. Also it does not (yet) support the same functionality as GarageBand '11, as you noticed. If you have GarageBand '11 projects, that you want to continue to work with, don't delete the GarageBand '11 installation. The installer will have moved it to a subfolder of Applications. You can continue to use it, even with GB 10.0 installed.
There is not yet much documentation on GB 10.0.
Start with the GarageBand online Help:  GarageBand 10.0 Online Help
There is also a short tutorial on the Bullets & Bones GarageBand FAQ:
http://www.bulletsandbones.com/GB/GBFAQ.html#multitrackrecordinggbv10
A "must have" for GarageBand 10 is HangTime's terrific effect finder:
http://www.bulletsandbones.com/GB/File%20Pages/GBEffectFinder.html
This neat utility will tell you, which effects are available for which kind of instrument track.
I'd be lost without this tool.

  • Trouble backing up Macbook (10.4.11) and some newbie questions...

I am using a MacBook OS X 10.4.11 and do not have Time Machine. I have a couple newbie questions...
What is the best way to back up everything? I am using Disk Utility's Restore tab but it is taking forever. I first tried to do it though Disk Utility's First Aid tab but it wouldn't let me make a New Image because the "source was in use", I think it is because I don't have the Install Disc to begin with (http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1553).
Secondly, does this include everything in "Home" (bookmarks, iPhoto library, iTunes library and so forth), Documents, and Desktop? Or must these be archived and transferred to the external hard drive separately from Macintosh HD?
Thanks in advance for any help!

I tried restarting the phone and switching to another USB cable and now it is working so never mind.

  • How do I add a Handwritten Signature to my form? And other Form Questions

    Hi there,
I'm making a form for parents who's kids are going to drive a motorcycle for the first time.
Now I want to use my laptop with touchscreen for people to fill it in.
the normal boxes (name, adres etc) with keyboard.
But the important part is the SIGNATURE which has to be handwritten.
It's for insurance and legal autorisation from the parents that the kid is allowed to drive and they know the risks and rules.
How do I add a box in which parents can sign.
Or is there another solution to make it legal?
Another question now I might have someones attention:
After a parent is done filling the form and presses OK or DONE
Is there a way a parent can choose to use a new blank form or the same form again without date of birth/name/sex
so he/she can fill the forms faster for the rest of the kids?
    OR
Is it possible to let a parents say I have 4 kids (with a choice menu)
and the parent wil get 4 name/age/sex openings and the rest of the form will stay the same?
    And
Is it possible to export the whole bunch into a excel for easy usage
    Thanks in advance
    and all tips are welcome!
    Love
    Kim

Just to share some info for this:
I used to do this sort of thing quite a bit.  What I used was a scanner to scan my hand written signature to an image file.  I would then paste the image file, which supported transparency, over the signature line.  More recently, I used Photoshop to draw a signature saving in a transparent image file.
Just to warn you though:  you are asking for legal advice, and you are not going to get that here.  I would consult with an attorney to find out exactly what is legal.

  • Adding a RAID card to help speed up export (and other drive question) in Premiere Pro CC

First of all, I have read Tweakers Page exporting section because that is where my primary concern is. First my questions, then background and my current and proposed configurations:
Question 1: Will adding a hardware RAID controller, such as an LSI MegaRAID remove enough burden from the CPU managing parity on my software RAID 5 that the CPU will jump for joy and export faster?
Question 2: If true to above, then compare thoughts on adding more smaller SSDs for either a one volume RAID 0 or smaller two volume RAID 0 to complement existing HDD RAID 5. That is, I'm thinking of buying four Samsung 850 Pro 128 GB SSDs to put in a four disk volume to handle everything (media/projects, media cache, previews, exports), or split it up into two volumes of two disks each and split the duties, or keep the four disk volume idea and put the previews & exports on my HDD RAID 5 array.
The 850's are rated at SEQ read/write: 550/470 MB/s thus I could get around 2000/1500 MB/s read write in a four disk RAID 0 or 1/2 that if I split into two volumes to minimize volumes from reading/writing at the same time, if that really matters with these SSDs?
The Tweaker's page made a few comments. One is splitting duties among different disks, rather than a large efficient RAID may actually slow things down. Since the SSDs are much faster than a single HDD, I'm thinking that is no longer accurate, thus I'm leaning toward the Four disk configuration putting OS & Programs on C drive, Media & Projects on D (HDD RAID 5), Pagefile & Media Cache on SSD (2-disk RAID 0) and Previews &Exports on 2nd SSD RAID 0 (or combine the two RAID 0's and their duties).
Just trying to get a perspective here, since I haven't purchased anything yet. Any experience/stories, I would appreciate.
    My current drive configuration:
My D drive is software RAID 5 consisting of four 1 TB Western Digital RE4 (RED) 7200 RPM HDDs with a CrystalDiskMark SEQ Read/Write of 339/252 MB/s.
The C drive is SSD 500 GB (Samsung 840 (not Pro) and does 531/330 MB/s. My OS, Program Files and Page File are on C, and data/media files/project, etc all are on the RAID drive.
    Problem:
Current setup allows for smooth editing, only the exporting seems slow, often taking between two and two and a half times the video length to export. Thus a 10 minute video takes 20-30 minutes to export. 15 minute video can take 30-40 minutes to export. The first 10% of the two-pass export takes under a minute (seems fast), but it gets slower where the final 10 or 20% can hang for many minutes like my system is running out of steam. So where is the waste?
I have enabled hardware acceleration (did the GPU hack since my GPU isn't listed) and it may spike at 25% usage a few times and eat up 600 MB of VRAM (I have 2 GB of VRAM), otherwise it is idle the whole export. The CPU may spike at 50% but it doesn't seem overly busy either.
Our timeline is simple with two video streams and two audio streams (a little music and mostly voice) with simple transitions (jump cuts or cross dissolves). We sometimes fast color correct, so that might use the GPU? Also, since we film in 1080 60P and export 1080 29.97 frames/sec, I think that is scaling and uses the GPU. I know without the GPU, it does take a lot longer. I have ruled out buying a faster GPU since it doesn't appear to be breaking a sweat. I just need to know if my system is bottlenecked at the hard drive level because I'm using software RAID and my disks are slow and will hardware RAID significantly reduce the CPU load so it can export faster.
Our files are not huge in nature. Most our clips are several MBs each. Total project files are between 5 GBs and 10 GBs for each video with Windows Media File export being 500 MB to 1.2 GB on average. We shoot using Panasonic camcorders so the original files are AVCHD, I believe (.MTS files?).
    Considerations:
    1. I'm thinking of buying (and future proofing) an LSI Logic MegaRAID 9361-8i that is 12Gb/s SAS and SATA (because some current SSDs can exceed the 6Gb/s standard).
    2. I'm not replacing my current RAID 5 HDDs because not in my budget to upgrade to 6 or more large SSDs. These drives are more important to me for temporary storage because I remove the files once backed up. I don't mind a few inexpensive smaller SSDs if they can make a significant difference for editing and exporting.
I can only guess my HDD RAID is slow but the CPU is burdened with parity. I would imagine running RAID 10 would not help much.
    My setup:
    my setup:
    CPU - i7-3930K CPU @4.5 GHz
    RAM - G.SKILL Ripjaws Z Series 32GB (4 x 8GB) DDR3 2133 @2000
    Motherboard - ASUS P9X79 WS LGA 2011
GPU - Gigabyte GeForce GTX 660 OC 2GB (performed the compatibility list hack to enable hardware acceleration).
C drive - 500 GB Samsung 840 SSD (Windows 7 Pro 64 bit and programs).
D drive - four 1 TB WD RE4 Enterprise HDDs 7200 RPMs in software RAID 5
Case - Cooler Master HAF X
CPU Fan - Cooler Master Hyper 212 EVO with 120 mm fan
Power Supply - Corsair Pro Series AX 850 Watt 80 Plus Gold
    Optical Drive - Pioneer BDR - 208DBK
    thanks in advance,
    Eric

........software RAID 5 off the motherboard ??????......NOT a good idea, from what I have read here on this forum from experts like Harm Millard and others. They have mentioned a LARGE overhead on the CPU doing this....causing sub-par performance. RAID 0 off the motherboard will NOT do this, however.....RAID 0 would provide optimum speed, but, with the risk of total data loss if ANY drive fails. You may wish to reconfigure your RAID to be RAID 0...BUT...you would need to DILIGENTLY back up its entire volume onto perhaps a quality 4TB drive very frequently.
A lot depends on the nature of your current and FUTURE codecs you plan to edit. You may not want to sink a lot of money into an older setup that may have trouble with more demanding future codecs. For now, in the 1080p realm, your rig should be OK....the read/write performance on your CURRENT RAID 5 setup is not great, and a definite drag on the performance. The rest of your components appear to be fine.....the Samsung SSD, though not ideal, is OK.....it's write speed is WAY lower than the Pro model, but, the drive is used mainly for reading operations. Since you have Windows 7 Pro, and NOT Windows 8.......you CAN put the entire windows page file onto the RAID 0 you might create.....this will take that frequent read/write load OFF the SSD. Read the "tweakers Page" to see how to best TUNE your machine. To use your current setup most efficiently, without investing much money, you would :a. create the RAID 0 off the motherboard, ( putting all media and project files on it )  b. install a quality 7200rpm 4TB HDD to serve as a BACKUP of the RAID array. Then, install a Crucial M550 256GB or larger SSD, ( close in performance to Samsung 850 Pro...much cheaper), to put all previews, cache , and media cache files on....AND to use as " global performance cache" for After Effects...if you use that program. Exporting can be done to ANOTHER Crucial M550 for best speed...or, just to the either the FIRST Crucial or, the 4TB drive. Your current GPU will accelerate exports on any video containing scaling and any GPU accelerated effects. Your CPU is STILL important in SERVING the data to and from the GPU AND for decoding and encoding non-GPU handled video....your high CPU clock speed helps performance there ! You may want to check out possibly overclocking your video card, using MSI Afterburner.or, similar free program. Increasing the "memory clock speed" can RAISE performance and cut export times on GPU effects loaded timelines,or, scaling operations. On my laptop, I export 25% faster doing this. With my NEW  i7 4700 HQ laptop, I export in the range of your CURRENT machine....about 2 to 3 times the length of the original video. PROPERLY SET UP...your desktop machine should BLOW THIS AWAY !!
Visit the PPBM7 website and test your current setup to possibly identify current bottlenecks,or, performance issues. THEN, RE-TEST it again, after making improvements to your machine to see how it does. Be aware that new codecs are coming (H.265 and HEVC,etc.) which may demand more computer horsepower to edit, as they are even MORE compressed and engineered for "streaming" high quality at a lower bandwidth on the internet. The new Haswell E...with its quad-channel memory, 8 core option, large number of PCI gen. 3 lanes, goes farther in being prepared for 4K and more. Testing by Eric Bowen has shown the newer PPro versions provide MUCH better processing of 4K than older versions.

  • Leopard, gcc 3.3 and other bizarre questions...

    Hi all.
I'm currently trying to install amarok music player onto Mac OS X 10.5.2,
I've already done so on an identical hardware configuration, under Mac OS X 10.4.x, and after a few compiling errors, and unmet dependencies, managed pretty well I thought.
This time my problem(s) is(are) different.
I've user what the amarok wiki ( http://amarok.kde.org/wiki/OnOSX ) describes as the "Amarok via Fink in complete" method, which is to say install fink, hit fink install amarok, and hope for the best... Having pushed through a few bits and pieces here and there, amarok is now compiled and installed.
But I get this strange error message when launching amarok, which then subsequently and very rapidly crashes :
    [start code]
dyld: lazy symbol binding failed: Symbol not found: dscaler_greedyh_getmethod
    Referenced from: /sw/lib/xine/plugins/1.1.10/post/xineplugposttvtime.0.0.0.so

    Referenced from: /sw/lib/xine/plugins/1.1.10/post/xineplugposttvtime.0.0.0.so
    Expected in: dynamic lookup
    [end code]
(I don't think the entire amarok debug output is relevant, it's just version 1.4.8 and the rest seems pretty standard to me, do please ask if you want the full gdb output though)
After looking up the dyld errors I found this :
    http://naranja.umh.es/~atg/blog/archives/2007/01/entry_0.html
(quite old I know, but sound and the closest I found to my error)
which lead me to believe I should have compiled amarok, and for that matter libxine1 (which I compiled myself with the --with-external-ffmpeg flag because fink wouldn't do so...), with gcc set to version 3.3 (should I?)
I then discovered that gcc_select didn't exist in Mac OS X 10.5, nicked it of a 10.4, removed and tweaked it until everything worked fine on the 10.5 with gcc 3.3 (I compiled a test.c with no problem), and tried again... with no luck. I couldn't get xine, nor amarok to compile.
So my questions are these (after that lengthly introduction, bear with me please :
-firstly (or miraculously...) does anyone recognize or understand those errors amarok is giving out?
-secondly can someone please explain the situation with Mac OS X 10.5 and gcc versions <=4.0 'cos I'm really out of the picture here ?!
Thanks a lot in advance for any help, and sorry for the long post, I figure it's always best for folks to have an overall picture of things...
    Kind regards,
    Mark.

I'm sorry, I can't really help with xine issues, you'll have to
    contact the xine maintainer.
As for getting amarok 1.4.x, if you want 1.4.8, I've already got
amarok 1.4.8 in fink unstable, your best bet is to not try to build it
by hand, and instead get it there...
-firstly (or miraculously...) do you recognize or understand those errors
    amarok is giving out?
I recognize them as an issue with xine, but I don't know where the
    errors come from.
-secondly can you explain the situation with Mac OS X 10.5 and gcc versions
<=4.0 'cos I'm really out of the picture here ?!</div>
gcc 3.3 does not exist on any of the intel platforms, except for
compiling backwards-compatible powerpc code. The first apple gcc that
supports x86 Mac OS X is gcc 4.0. You can't gcc_select it, if there
is something that supposedly requires 3.3, it won't work on 10.4 or
10.5, on an intel box, except building a complete powerpc application
    and running it under rosetta.

So thanks a lot Benjamin, that solves that, no way to run gcc 3.3 on Intel Mac OS X 10.5, and the errors I'm encountering are from xine.
I guess I'll be chasing up the xine maintainer now!
Thanks all for you help guys, and see ya' !

  • Using 'what size' what in Library (and other folders) to delete?

In Library I notice a lot of 'packages' and 'receipts' folders/files - 'pkg' files - can they be dumped?
There seems to be similar files in 'previous system' - can they be dumped too?
What is the 'private/var' folder? - can anything be dumped from this?
Any other tips for deleting redundant files and folders - I've already got rid of the other languages related stuff.
    Many thanks

    Empty the trash!
Open up your application folder & go through all your apps. Trash all the apps you no longer want and/or use.
An easier way to do this is to open the Application folder in list view & press the Command+j keys.
In the the dialog that appears, click the "This Window Only" button & the "Calculate All Sizes" check box.
Wait a bit until your file & folder sizes have all been calculated, then click the "Size" column to sort your apps from the fattest to the most anorexic.
Get rid of all your photo files you don't want and/or need. Same goes for those pics off the websites you downloaded (gifs, jpegs, etc.).
Get rid of all your music files you no longer listen too. Especially, if you already have the actual CD/DVDs or you can later redownload from a website.
Use Spotlight to make sure you got rid of everything. You can even trash directly from Spotlight!
Drag what you don't want and/or need to the trash. Better yet, download this neat little shareware app demo called AppZapper. It basically does all the work for you by not only trashing the apps but the apps preference files, caches & all its associated files.
Another software that does the above is AppDelete. Best of all this software is free!
Burn what you want and/or need onto CDs or DVDs.
Not everyone has the luxury of purchasing an external HD and/or Mobile accounts to store their "stuff.”
You can check with your ISP to see if they offer free storage space. Most if not all do now-a-days.
There are thousands if not millions of free storage facilities on the web also. Use your favorite search engine to search them out as they come in different storage sizes to fit your needs & wants.
    Check for duplicate fonts.
    Applications>Font Book
    Select “All Fonts”
If you see any “black dots” next to any fonts this mean you have duplicates and/or multiple versions of these fonts.
    To clean this up, select a “black dotted” font or the Apple + click to select multiple dotted fonts;
    Edit>Resolve>Duplicates.
What the above does is turns off the duplicates & multiple version fonts. Not delete them.
More than likely the “extras” were installed by other programs and/or other users.
    Clear out font caches
Use FontNuke. It does all the work for you. And, best of all it’s FREE.
    Printer Drivers
Get rid of all the printer drivers you don’t need & use except the ones for your current printer(s)/scanner(s).
    HD>Library>Printers Folder
If you accidentely threw something out that you needed for your printer/scanner it can be easily obtained from the manufacturer’s website and/or from the CD that came w/the printer/scanner.
    Garage Band
Has about 1GB of loops stored. Get rid of some some them. You surely don’t use, like and/or need them all.
    HD>Library>Audio/Apple Loops>Apple>Apple Loops For GarageBand
Or just get rid of the Garage Band app altogether if you don’t use it.
    Get rid of extra languages
Strip your computer down to your “native” tongue.
You can do this with a FREE utility called Monolingual. Another app that apparently does all the work for you. I’ve never used it. However, a lot of users here swear by & recommend it highly.
However, there is a warning for *native English speakers*. Make sure you keep BOTH English and English (United States).

  • How does Smartware handle backing up two drives to My Cloud...and other Smartware questions

When you set up backup from two disk drives on one PC to My Cloud via Smartware, do they both backup simultaneously, or do I need to do one, then the other? I have a Windows 8.1 laptop with two hard drives, one is 500GB, the other 1 TB. After installing My Cloud (3TB) and Smartware, I went into Smartware and set up my backups. I selected various folders on each drive to back up, and I also set up two different folders on My Cloud to receive these files. Setup is like this: PC Drive ->                                 My Cloud FolderSeveral folders in G: drive ->    Pictures, Video folder on My CloudDesktop and User folder onmain drive                           ->     Users folder on My Cloud Every time I open my PC at home, I start Smartware, click the Backup tab and let the backup continue. I feel like I need to manually go into the Home and Backup tab for each backup plan (one per drive) and restart it. Regardless, my question is this: is Smartware able to handle these two drives on my laptop backing up onto My CLoud? Other Smartware questions:- Does my PC have to be on my home network (where My Cloud is installed) in order to run Smartware? Can I be on the internet outside of my home and run Smartware?- I run Outlook 2010. Will Smartware back up the latest Outlook file automatically as new files are created (basically, every time I run Outlook)? Much appreciated. - Paul M.

    Hello,
When you set up backup from two disk drives on one PC to My Cloud via Smartware, do they both backup simultaneously, or do I need to do one, then the other?
You will need to do one first and then the other and the last one that is selected will be done automatically.
    - Does my PC have to be on my home network (where My Cloud is installed) in order to run Smartware?
    Yes.
Can I be on the internet outside of my home and run Smartware?
WD Smartware does not perform remote backups.

  • Posible p4n diamond heat problem and other beep question

Hi   was using my p4n diamond for about 2h 30min and it all of a sudden just cuts out with no warning.
im unsure if its heat related thought the constant 55C is not as good temp as i should probably have but it stays stable there.
Also when i recently installed msi core it said i was very close to the voltages it had in the display just to hope to rule out power problems.
i have the cases 120mm exaust fan in the back an 80mm input fan in thefront and then the cpu fan that came with my pentium d 830 .
if its heat related should i get another 80mm fan as an exaust or an 80 mm input fan. i have one more spot on the door of the case.
    ----other beep question--
I was also wondering about the beeps on my computer. when i first was working with this pcc i had no beeps but then when working i had one beep  before os   then two after os and usb case plugs and floppy , 3 when i put on a printer and then back to one and then no  beeps.
are these my beeps going down related to my heat or is this mother board short lived . one beeps soposed to mean that its loading properly
    thanks

regarding your question about target temperature. my board isn't exactly the same as yours, but it's close.
you are right that you can lower the target temp and it will tend to cool the cpu because the fan runs faster at a lower temperature. the way i set up mine was to DISABLE the target temp and that gives the fan full voltage at all temps. that way, the fan rpm will bottom out at 2250rpm (instead of 1100rpm up to the target temp) or so even at lower temps.
also keep in mind that your cpu temp in the bios disply should be a few degrees HIGHER than the temp in "idle windows".
the intel data sheet for the pentium D 8xx series says that the max temp is 69C. so your cpu shouldnt have a problem at 55C.
i ran a prime95 primality test for about 17 hours at 60C to test stability (while using the computer for my normal foreground tasks) and didn't have a problem. i'm NOT recommending this. but i wanted you to know that this cpu doesn't have a problem with temps in the 60C range. and that msi motherboard will stand up to rough treatment.
also, in my humble opinion, i would NEVER run those msi windows utilities. they may be causing you a problem with stability. i use speedfan from almico to monitor temps and i have it set up to generate sound and visual warnings at certain temps. the F1 docs are good. if it were my system, i would go so far as to reinstall windows and format the C: to get rid of core center. i wouldn't even trust the uninstall unless you're good enough to surgically remove it manually.
also make sure you turn off EIST in the bios. it wont impact your temps significantly. that nvidia nforce sli intel edition has a problem with 14x multiplier and pentiumD. and EIST bumps you down to 14x occaisionally.

  • Managing files and other newbie type questions

I'm trying to decide between FCPX and Premiere Elements. I manage most of my media with Aperture. I've learned a whole lot already in a few solid hours of use of the trial. The integration with Aperture/iPhoto is very nice and keeps me out of Adobe Organizer which I do not care for. I have a signficant time investment in Aperture libraries, so the extra $$ for FCPX might be worth it -- if I can learn it.
It appears that FCPX currently will not directly import AVCHD (from Sony) with 5.1 -- it is brought in as stereo. Or am I missing something? I can get it in re-wrapping it with ClipWrap. But that adds $50 to an already expensive piece of software (for me.) I have an older mini-DVD camcorder (also Sony). Actually the camcorder is toast, but I have the mini-DVDs. Can I import these and keep the 5.1 or do they need an intermediate step?
I can't figure out how to go from FCPX to Aperture, if that's possible. If I import with FCPX, do I have to turn around and re-import into Aperture? (We really like having it all in one app for browsing the photos/videos.)
If I import with FCPX and do not optimize, I understand I can do this later on the fly if I choose to use the clip, right? The unoptimized video quality of the imported clips is not worse than the source, correct? This will save me a ton of disk space if I can use this fast, unoptimized import. I don't edit 80% of the source.
I've figured out how to do a Picture-in-Picture type deal but I can't find in help or elsewhere how to resize/transition the Picture-in-Picture. Here's what I'm doing: We're filming a high school band. The primary video is the big picture, wide view of the band. Then when a soloist performs, I overlay a separate video of them moving into position in "picture-in-picture" type of window. When they actually perform, I would like to put in a transition where this picture in picture "explodes" or zooms out to fill the screen. I can't figure this out. When the soloist is done, I want to reverse it. This whole process looks like a perfect example of multi-cam edits, but I'm still trying to figure that out.
    Thanks for any pointers.

Ok, multi-cam is not the way to go for this. Thanks.
Keywords... that's what I'm discovering now. Very nice organizational stuff in there I've been missing with iMovie/PrE. I don't have that many clips yet, but eventually this will be very handy.
I'm going away from the PIP deal. We tested it last night and even on a 55" screen, it's really just kinda gee-whiz. You don't get enough detail to see what he's doing. So I'm just transitioning now from main clip to soloists and back. The wide screen shot was totally useless in a little PIP window anyway. Since the whole show is only 10 minutes, I'll just give them two videos. One edited with soloists/visuals one raw video of the whole band for marchign critique.
Actually, if you decide that the PIP stuff does not work, this brings multicam back into the process.
PIP was the only reason why I advised against going with multicam for this.
It would be nice if the end user could pick the camera angle they wanted while watching.
Thanks for the inputs. I will read up on keyframes as you suggested.

You can't offer that kind of interactivity to the user, but with multicam you can offer your best choice of angles - and can even easily produce two or more different versions.

  • 10.3.5 sluggish on my iMac (and some other newbie questions)...

I just purchased an iMac, and am brand-new to Macs. I can do anything on a PC, and actually do PC tech support for a living, so you can imagine that I feel completely ridiculous asking some of these questions, but here goes:
    1. How do I copy and paste? Ctrl+C does not work.... surely there is another alternative?
    2. Is there a way I can download OE for Mac? I know Microsoft no longer offers downloads or support, but if there is another place I could find ol'familiar Outlook Express, that would be fantastic.
    3. My browser (either IE or Safari) is not completely maximized. There's the area below, and an area to the side with some icons as well... is this the maximum size of the browser, or...?
    4. Right now I'm running OS 10.3.5, which seems a bit sluggish. It came installed. I also have the discs for 8.6, and if it will make the system run better, I'll definitely ''downgrade.'' How would I do this? Do I have to ''reformat'' or anything like that?
    5. Are there other tweaks, sort of like MSCONFIG, that will help speed up my system in general?
    Here are my system stats:
iMac (Grape!), 333MHz, 6GB Harddrive, 196 MB RAM...
    It's a G3 CRT, I think (if that matters).
Any help would be so much appreciated!

    Hello Tiffany,
First of all, Welcome to the Apple Discussions!
In regards to your #4, I would just suggest running Software Update (after upgrading the RAM memory if possible) and upgrading to the latest version of 10.3 that should be offered to you, ie. 10.3.9). As the other posters have suggested above you should upgrade your RAM to at least 256 MB. With any updates to system software, remember to Repair Permissions from Disk Utility found at HD/Applications/Utilities/Disk Utility before and after the update.
There are many "tweaks" and troubleshooting information for OS X that you can perform to get the best from your OS and machine.
Some great information can be found @:
    http://www.thexlab.com/faqs/faqs.html
A great tip, as your machine has a very small amount of Disk space is to run a little app called Delocalizer that will free up alot of space taken from Foriegn language files. The link to it can be found in Dr. Smoke's FAQ for "Freeing space on your Mac OS X startup disk".
    hope that helps some,
    littleshoulders [:-)

  • How does the Java card simulator work? and other misc questions

First, I have a class inherited from Applet. Okay, I did that.
How do I convert this class to a CAP file? I mean I have a class file which is compiled by javac, do I use this file to convert into a CAP file? What is an AID? Do I make up this AID?
In this .scr file (APDU Script), I understand the first 4 bytes, it means to create an Applet, but what about the rest? I know there are some intermixes of lengths and AIDs, I just can't decipher this.
    // create wallet applet
    0x80 0xB8 0x00 0x00 0x14 0x0a 0xa0 0x0 0x0 0x0 0x62 0x3 0x1 0xc 0x6 0x1 0x08 0 0 0x05 0x01 0x02 0x03 0x04 0x05 0x7F;
And here comes the main question?
How does the simulator work? How do I generate the data that mimics what the card reader reads?
    Thanks

  • CR XI and charts -newb question within

    Hi All,
Great website and resource!  I'm a CR newbie and need help with charts.  I'll be using CR to develop single page summary sheets that contain only charts and cross-tabs.  The data is identified by dates that range from 2002 to 2008, and certain charts will show data from certain time range.
    Here is a theoretical sample:
    Date   Sales (units)
    1/01/02      5
    1/02/03      4
    1/03/04      5
    1/04/05      1
    1/05/06      4
    1/04/06      5
    1/03/07      2
    1/04/07      1
    1/05/08      5
    1/11/08      2
    3/04/09      6
If I want a bar chart that plots all the sales from a certain year, how do I go about doing that? formula? groups?
If I want a bar chart that plots cumulative sales from 2002 to 2008, how do I go about doing that?
    please help!!
    Thank You in advance,
    Frank

    Hi Raghavendra,
Thank you for the great and prompt response!! To further clarify, on my first question, if I only want to display the sales of 2008, and not every year, how do I do that?
New question: If i wanted to track the occurrences of sales, how would I do that?
    Using the same theoratical example:
    Date
    1/01/02
    1/02/03
    1/03/04
    1/04/05
    1/05/06
    1/04/06
    1/03/07
    1/04/07
    1/05/08
    1/11/08
    3/04/09
I want to plot on a bar graph that in the month of January, 2007, there were 2 occurrences of sales, and in the month of January, 2008 there were 2 occurences of sales.  How would I do that?
    Thank You very much!!
    Frank

  • CS5: CUDA, CPU and other hardware questions

CS5 can gain much speed with CUDA technology by Nvidia; I assume everybody who researched a bit knows this.
However, I like very exact information to get the best decision for a new investment.
I need to get two identical new CS5 systems, that are much faster and not as buggy as my last CS4 system.
I have about 30.000 euro for 2 machines.
Our studio demands SDI connections, so I got a Matrox Axio.
Currently my system has lots of problems with Premiere and After Effects:
    - Field swaps
    - Inconsistent effect parameters
    - Very slow rendering
    - Very slow app startups
    - Multi task slowdowns
    - Crashes of apps
    - Very slow interface operations
    1. Does CS5 only use the CUDA of supported CUDA Cards?
    2. Does SLI or multi graphic card tech, help CS5 speed at all?
    3. Is it useful to get a Tesla next to a Quadro 5800 or is it not seen by CS5?
    4. What Intel processor is best suited for After Effects rendering: iX or Xeon architecture?
    5. Does Adobe really use only 3 Gb per core, meaning you should not buy more than 3Gb per CPU core? Or is it per THREAD and should I get more RAM?
    6. Speed or number: Is it better to focus on very high total core speed, or to optimal RAM distribution by getting as many cores as possible?
    7. Can a Matrox MXO2 Rack unit, cooperate with the Nvidia CUDA power or could both accelerations/technologies hinder eachother?
    8. Is it best to get Nvidia SDI connectivity or is there a save alternative?
    9. Can iX CPU's be dual or is that a Xeon option only?
    10. What is the fastest 6 core Xeon that can be dual?
    11. Does CS5 need a good scratch disk: is it wise to get a SSD just for scratch or is it overkill?
    12. Some say the Nvidia 5800 is not the fastest card around; it has 240 cuda cores and some gtx cards have far more than that. What is the story?
I probably forgot about 324 other questions, but for now these will do.
If any of you can give objective and confirmed information, please do!

"I have about 30.000 euro for 2 machines."  That's about  $38,772.00 USD!!  Oh what I could build with that money!  I.M.O, I would seriously look for a way around using Matrox video products.  We began using the Matrox RT.X100 back in 2003 with Premiere 6.5.  On a good day, we could edit all day with only one crash.  The RT.X100 introduced serious problems to our workflow like corrupted project files and timelines that would export finished "show master" videos that contained errors like areas that freeze frame for 10 seconds.
Here is a link in the Adobe Hardware Forum to the two systems I recently built for the company I work for.  Both systems cost roughly the equivalent of  2,725 EUR. That's not each, but for both systems:
    Our Two Rock-Solid Editing Systems
The X-58 motherboards will accept the new 6 core intel i7 980x processors, you could go with 4GB sticks of RAM for a total per system of 24 and pop in a couple of Nvidia 285 GTX's for MPE acceleration.  You should go with Harm's recommendation for Raid setup.  For input and output connections, I'm thinking that someone makes a non-invasive solution.  Take a look at products like the DeckLink HD Extreme 3D.  I really don't know if this product is compatible with CS5 and the Mercury Playback Engine.  I would do a little research on that.

  • What kind of bean? (newbie question)

    Hi all
I'm new on j2ee and i'm trying to evaluate the best solution for my kind of implementation, i hah read some stuff about ejb but i'm still have questions about the right stuff for me.
    My case:
I want to have a workflow engine running on a j2ee server, for that, i guess I must have a ejb that when the app server start's, it starts the engine. The ejb must be the interface for that engine.
I suppose it can't be a Session Bean because i need the engine always up, running background threads, but Entity beans it's persistence, and i don't wanna save the engine on database, just wanna run it always that the app server is up.
Can you guys give some lights on this?
Btw, for engine initialization, when the app server start's where on the bean I place the code for the initialization.
    Thanks :)

    Whats t&c?
Anyway in most contries your aloud to make backups of your DVD and rip them to watch on your iPod.
Programms which do that include Handbrake and VisualHub.
But if its a DVD you burned yourself, you should be able to convert the files on the DVD with either Quicktime or iSquint without any of the other programms.
iSquint is great much faster than Quicktime and free.

  • Scratch disk and other setup questions

Hello, I am a long time Premiere user but have never been involved with the setup. I have decided to start doing personal video editing on my gaming computer and have run into some questions.
The biggest one I have is with the scratch disk setup. I've read the help doc about 10 times and googled every combination of terms I can think of but am still unsure how I should set these for my setup.
I have Premiere Pro CS5 installed on my C:, which is a 128 GB SSD
For storage I have 4 1TB drives in Raid 5, so 2.72 TB total storage.
How do I want to set up my scratch disks for best possible performance?
Question 2: This might be related to scratch disk setup, I'm not sure, but something I have always wondered. Which disk should I save my projects to in this configuration? Does it matter? Then, do I want to render my final video to that same folder or to another disk?
Question 3: I currently have a GTX 460 graphics card and am enjoying the benefits of CUDA acceleration. I have been looking at adding a second in SLI for gaming purposes, but have read that the Mercury Playback Engine is not compatible with SLI. Does this mean that it will still just work with one card and I will see no benefit in premiere, or that all CUDA acceration will cease?
Thanks guys, I really appreciate the help.

Alright, so I have the hdd's in the case and am setting up where to place everything, but each of my drives is different, so I am hoping someone can suggest best practice on which drives should hold what. I can rearrange any drive to suit any purpose you guys would suggest, but here is what I currently have set up:
    C: - 128 GB SATA III SSD
    D: - 150 GB 10k VelociRaptor
    E: - 250 GB Caviar Black
    F: - 4x 1 TB Spinpoint F4 7200 RPM in RAID 5
Here is how I am currently planning on using these drives:
    C: - OS, Programs
    D: - Media, Projects
    E: - Previews, Exports
    F: - Pagefile, Media Cache
When I am finished with a project I move the exported file onto my media server, so that is why I set the export onto the smaller drive and media cache onto the RAID.
Does this look good or would you guys suggest a different orientation for better performance?
And one other question, this time regarding RAM. I currently have 6 GB of DDR3, 3 x 2 GB. I have been reading all about how moving up to 24 GB would be very beneficial, and since it really isn't all that expensive, I am planning on doing so. My question is that, I have watched the task manager while rendering and exporting my videos and I've only ever seen RAM usage hit 1.8 GB. I wondered why it didn't get close to using all 6, but didn't worry about it too much. But now that I am hearing 24 would be helpful, I am wondering if I have something set up wrong that is stopping Premiere from using all my RAM?
Thank you guys so much for the help.
