What is Illustrator's equivalent to Freehands "Paste Inside" feature?

I'm really new to Illustrator, having come over from Freehand MX (which no longer works on my OSX software), so I'm a little lost. Can anyone tell me if Illustrator has a feature that is the equivalent of Freehand's "Paste Inside" feature? I'm desperate! Thanks!

If you have CS5, it has a 'draw inside' feature, this is just automaticially making a mask from the object. (the paint tool and text works but with shapes you need to copy and paste them inside, which is what you're looking for.)

You may be referring to a clipping mask. Say I want this image of a city to be contained inside of this sheared rectangle.
Just select both the shape and the image and choose Object > Clipping Mask > Make.
To edit the image inside of the shape, simply double click on the graphic and you can edit "inside".

OT: What is CS6's equivalent to the "Donut"?

CS6 is out, the best roundup I've seen is at InDesign Secrets. It all looks great especially creating forms! BTW if you want to moan about the endnotes ommision I truly sympathise with you but start a new thread!
However just for fun my question is - what is the CS6 equivalent to the universally despised and never used Content Grabber tool, aka as the "Donut"?
My pick is it's the Content Collector and Placer Tools. I haven't used it, but just looking at it my first thought is why the heck can't you just use the standard selection tool? And why two tools? Perhaps it's different in actual practise. I don't know. But it sure looks awkward....

I've not tried InDesign CS6 yet but here's my take on some of the noted new features
Creating Interactive Forms
So what? You get a "Sample Library" you get some additions to the Buttons panel? Big whoop. I bet it doesn't work very well for complex forms.
Alternate Layouts
Sounds great, I'm not sure if the alternate layouts are dynamic (make one change in one layout and it happens in the other, or if content can be unlinked between documents, or if they're standalone documents residing in one document?) But it sounds promising.
Liquid Layout
An improvement to "Layout Adjustment" by the looks of it.
Content Collector/Content Placer tools
A fancy Copy and Paste - that a lot of people can't really see the point of this feature
On-object Link Status and Control
They added a node to the frame to let you know if a link isn't working - AMAZING
Primary Text Frame
Finally got the Master Text Frame working properly - and renamed it
Text Frames that Auto-Size
Something that a plugin developer did a while ago - it was good, looks like they've adapted it.
Flexible Columns
Great - it seems to be related to the Text Frame Auto size though.
Still can't have different WIDTHS for each column though!

Overall - I don't see "New Features" I see mostly Old Features Updated and dressed up - Plus a Lot of "Bug Fixes" since CS5.5
Will CS5.5 get thes fixes? OR even CS5? I doubt it.

I have seen similar discussions but none of the answers are of any help to me as of today.
Background:
I am running OS X Yosemite 10.10
All my CC apps are up to date as of (11/1/14)
I am also up to date on all other software on my Mac
My goal:
Copy text from illustrator
Paste in Mail, TextEdit, and Notes as live editable text
Results:
Text pastes as pdf or some type of an image depending on the app
What it looks like:
I'll start from the beginning to avoid some questions later.
I open a new document in Illustrator.
These are the clipboard settings in my preferences.
Please Note - I have tried every combination of these settings. Turning them on and off one at a time and in combination does nothing to change the end product. I have turned them all off for this example, so as to not muddy the waters.
I type some text. I did not use a text box in this example. I just clicked on the page with the type tool and typed this line. There are no added attributes. You can see the character settings are the most basic. Again, please note - I have tried using a text box with the same result.
I use the type tool to highlight the text and then copy the text. I did not use the selection tool to select the text and copy.
This is what the clipboard looks like. Note that the contents is "text".
If I type text in PS (as an example) and copy to the clipboard it says "text". However, the text I copy out of PS I can paste anywhere as editable text.
If I type text in Notes and copy to the clipboard it says RTF. This text can also be pasted anywhere as editable text.
This leads me to believe that this is an Illustrator centric problem I am experiencing.
I click into the body of an email and paste. Looks fine, but when I try to click into the text (such as between the words "into" and "Mail") I cannot do it.
The line of words is highlighted and not editable at all.
If I right click on the image of the line of text and highlight "open attachment" you can see the clipboard pasted in as a .pdf and not editable text.
Interestingly, if I open a new note and try to paste the line of text, it also pastes as a .pdf but just the icon show up. Double clicking on the icon will open the text as a pdf in acrobat.
I did not have this issue until CC2014 updates were made. I would like to know if there is something that can be done or is this a bug in Illustrator. If it is a bug I don't want to spend time looking for workarounds. I will use another program when I know there will be a good deal of copy and paste work to be done. It's inconvenient for my older Illustrator files now have this issue when I open them in CC2014.
I know I can use the "paste and match style" but it's a force of habit to use the shortcut for paste. It's also a ridiculous change to Illustrator for the cut/paste to act this way. If it indeed was planned and not a bug, what would the benefit be?
If anyone has insight into the problem I am eager to know what's going on.
Finally, if there is no other way to fix this then can someone remind me how to customize the shortcut key combinations in Mail, Notes and TextEdit? I seem to remember (long ago) being able to customize certain shortcuts in some apps, but I never did it in anything but Adobe apps and even then it was CS5.

I ran into this issue today. I wanted to copy text into an email – however I pasted it it stayed uneditable.
The workaround was to open Text Edit and use the menu item 'paste and match style' (Command+Option+Shift+V) which pastes it as editable text. Then copy and paste that into mail.
What a pain.
If I try 'paste and match style' directly in mail from illustrator it pastes as a flipping pdf.

Illustrator CS6 clipboard doesn't paste text from other programs, stays 'frozen.'

Lion Mac Tryout version: After using Illustrator CS6 copy and paste a couple times (just after you start it up), I cannot change the clipboard.
I cannot paste common text in from anywhere. It just pastes again the text from the last time the clipboard worked. I have to restart Illustrator CS6 to get a couple more correct clipboard uses before it repeats the same paste over and over despite what I just copied externally.
I'm having to still use Illustrator CS5.5 because of this. And wonder if updating to the Cloud version will turn off my access to Illustrator CS5.5. Help!

I refuse to debate with anyone in literally lives in an online forum and has amassed >8,900 posts to their name (expecially at a pace of 8 posts per day, 365 days a year). Nevertheless, I stand by my previous two posts. It still can be a bug even though some experienced bug-reporting techno-masters have not seen it. And the fact remains the bug goes away for a while when you relaunch Illustrator. The problem is that it comes back at some point and none of us like the idea of perpetually relaunching Illustrator while we are working on a project in Illustrator. Furthermore, the fact some of us are seeing this bug doesn't mean there's a hidden/forgotten clipboard manager on our computers either. Some of us are also certainly no novices to Illustrator and we know of past bugs -- bugs which did not affect everyone (like the bug in Illustrator CS5 that would cause the application to crash/quit when you try to copy large graphics within Illustrator itself). It is also important to consider that Illustrator users are most often Creative Pros, not Techno-Wizards. As such they would prefer to be spared the lectures when it comes to proper protocol on bug reporting to Adobe. Posting in forums like this one is not in vain. And although proper bug reporting is important, to think Adobe (or the online media) is oblivious to forum posts is naive in the extreme.
For now, you can get around Illustrator CS6 Paste bug by drag-and-drop. Works for graphics but in most cases you can't always do that with text. But at least it is a semi-convient copy/paste-like way to move content from another app into Illustrator CS6.
I would like to add that I can COPY text or graphics within Illustrator CS6 and then Paste them in an external app just fine. The bug in CS6 seems exclusive to Copying something outside Illustrator and then PASTING it into Illustrator. So for those of you filing bug reports on this, you may wish to confirm that point and then file it as a "Can't PASTE content copied from external apps" bug.
Lastly, I'd like to point out that this thread is currently the lone place on the net that Illustrator CS6 users can Google-up any info about this Paste bug. Unsurprisingly, CS6 is so new not many people have discovered the bug yet. Even so, I have little doubt that as time goes on more and more will find this thread and seek some kind of relief, hoping to hear word about an Adobe acknowledgement the bug exists (which implies they are working on a fix). Filing a bug report is the right thing to do, no question. But I would like to encourage those of you who don't have this problem to please refrain from writing with a condenscening attitude when replying to people who have been bitten by this bug. Adobe is a big company and they don't need the help of individual guru users to defend them. Some people who experience bugs vent their distress in different ways. Sometimes it's best to just "listen" rather than brow-beat. I try to do that myself in cases where someone reports a bug that I myself have not seen. I feel their pain.

In Freehand you cut paste inside (cut a larger object and paste it inside of a smaller object). How do you do this in Illustator?

Mainstream 2D vector drawing was set back a decade when FreeHand's competitive development was discontinued. But I'm not interested in returning to 10 years ago, even though in many important ways doing so would still leapfrog Illustrator's current functionality.
In other words, I'm not interested in a ressurrection of FreeHand per se. FreeHand had its problems, too, albeit far less than Illustrator. For example: Tell me how to, in FreeHand, call for a straight single-segment path in terms of length and angle. Tell me how to specify a movement in terms of direction and distance. That's pretty basic stuff, wouldn't you say?
The fact is, mainstream 2D vector drawing is stagnant and has been for many years. There is no mainstream 2D vector drawing progam I would call no-nonsense, full-featured, industrial-strength. There should be--and should have been long before now--but there isn't. The whole category is cheezy grade-school crap. This is largely due to Illustrator's market dominance. But the blame for "market dominance" falls to the addicted-to-mediocrity market, not to the vendor. If users don't demand better, they won't get it.
As for the clipping path thing: The largest problem (display of masked portion) has at long last been corrected. It took decades for this to occur. The stupid and backward behavior of stripping the clipping path of its appearance still needs to be reversed. But there are many similarly inefficient, inelegant, cumbersome and tedious behaviors in AI. Given AI's development history, how many decades will it take to correct them all?
I don't have that much time. A new-from-the-ground-up, truly industrial-strength (truly "professional") 2D drawing program is sorely needed to re-invigorate this important graphics segment.

I installed Office for Mac 2011 on my macbook pro and I need to right click over a file from an ealier version of Office to make Office 2011 the default version of office. This is all in preparation to install Lion (Lion won't support Office 2004 and I can't afford to lose access to these files).

CTRL=control (in between the fn and alt/option keys).
You can also go into System Preferences --> Trackpad and ensure "Secondary Click" is checked so that a two finger tap will act as a "right-click."

that didnt help because when i plug in my iphone to the computer it doesnt show my iphone in itunes all it does it pop up saying if i would like to download and update my ios software to ios 7.1.1 . when i put it in to DFU mode it didn't do anything and thre computer did not recognise it and neither did itunes. so i dont quite understand how to do this ill keep on trying and see if im in luck.
