What is in the weekly/monthly backups?

I can understand the hourly backups, but what is in the weekly/monthly backups? Is it the most recent of the hourly/weekly? If I restore a file that's a month old, what is the effective date of the data?
Does this question make sense?
JD

Consider that the hourly backups are effectively a complete copy of your system for each hour. The same is true of the dailies and weeklies. These are effectively complete copies. When it kills the hourlies and keeps the dailies, etc., it's giving you the effective complete system as of the end of that date.
What goes on under the hood is another matter, but for practical purposes, that's what its doing. Behind the scenes, it's avoiding making multiple copies of the same unchanged file, but for users, you don't need to know the tricks that are used to make it both complete at each backup and not redundant.
If you recover data from a backup of 4 weeks ago, you are looking at your system as it was at that moment in time, the end of the day on the effective date.

  • Days of the Week/Months are listed as numbers

My computer has recently been updated and rebooted, and since then my iCal has displayed the date, days of the week, etc differently.  iCal does not display any months or days of the week- they are simply just numbers.  I haven't been able to see that this is a setting- can anyone help? Thanks!

  • Manually Deleting Previous Day/Week/Month Backups

    Hi,
I use an external drive solely for time machine; however, I have a need to transfer about 20 GBs and want to use the external for such. Time machine currently maxes out the 200 GB hard drive with all its previous (years worth) of backups.
    1) Wondering if I could manually browse (via finder) the time machine drive and delete my previous (oldest) backups to free up some space... Is this possible or will it ruin my backups?
    2) Similarly, in a similar manner what if I wanted to retain only the latest backup of my files, and extinguish ALL the previous ones--to have a clean slate (I don't need any previous files).
I notice when I browse (via finder) I can see all the incremental time periods of backups. Is it as easy as deleting all of these folders except for the "latest" one? I realize the point of time machine is it references files that have not changed, so I'm weary that all my sub folder dates link/reference others, and in destroying one could ruin all of them...
    Thanks,
    TM

Don't use Finder to alter TM backups. You are asking for trouble. You can open the TM interface and try to delete backups from there.

In that case, erase your backup drive and start over. Seriously. That will clear out your backup drive the best.

Repeat of answer to question one. Don't mess with TM via Finder. Use the TM interface. Open Finder and click the TM icon on the Dock to open the TM interface.

  • What happened to the future months / years tab with iOS 7?

My old calendar had a nice feature at the bottom of the calendar allowng me to select future months and "next year".
It's gone with the iOs & update - this is not progress as it now takes longer to find future months by swiping all the way throough each month in turn.
Someone needs to get a grip and not throw out everything just because they can...

If you are on, say, the daily view page, then tap the month in the upper left to get a month view, then tap the year in upper left to get a year view.  In year view, swipe up/down go to the year whose month you want, then tap on the month and you're on month view.  Works differently but just as quickly.

  • Server 2012 separate monthly backups to network share

    Hi,
We have a NAS on our domain (network share) that we that we would like to do a backup to on the 1st of each month.  We do not want the previous months backup to be erased. So we end up with 12 backups(jan, feb, ....,dec). This backup will be taken
off-site at the end of the year and replaced with another NAS.
Is there a script we can schedule can accomplish this? Any help will be greatly appreciated.
    Thank you,
    Eric

ebsea, I understand where you're coming from, but I agree with jrv completely.
As you've presented the problem, it will be very hard for you to find help here, since you're asking for free help to do something that will probably require quite a bit of research and testing on our side for something that normally most of us here would
    charge for (as consultants).
Instead, may I suggest that you concentrate on small steps of what you're trying to achieve, do a lot of testing on your side and ask very concrete questions when you come across a problem?
    I.e.,
Is it possible to script backup to \\nas-2015\monthly\01 for jan, \\nas-2015\monthly\02 for feb,
    etc?
That's a concrete question, the answer is yes.
If you want to programmatically modify the folder something goes to depending on the month of the year (or any other time variable), in PowerShell you can use the Get-Date CmdLet.
To look at all of the properties and methods that the object it returns has, just do:
    Get-Date | Get-Member
This will show you that there is a Month property of type Integer (among other things), so doing:
    (Get-Date).Month
Will return the number of the current month. So 1, 2, ... 12. However, this will not have a leading zero for months with a single digit, which is useless for what you're after.
While we could do silly things like string manipulation (append a zero to the left side of the string and then return only the two characters from the right, as was done in VBScript), this is PowerShell and there is no need for that nonsense anymore.
Instead, looking at the documentation (https://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/hh849887.aspx) shows us that Get-Date has a -Format parameter and delving a bit deeper onto how to
use it (https://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ee692801.aspx) tells us it can do exactly what we're after. In the case of returning the month with a leading 0 for single digit months
    we simply do:
    Get-Date -Format MM
    And that's it, job done.
Hope this helped. If you have any more concrete questions feel free to ask.

  • Oracle returning incorrect day of the week

    Hi there,
I have a table named Performance, which includes a date field named PDATE, some other attributes such as title, etc, and a field named WEEKDAY, which includes the numerical value for the day of the week. Here is an example:

    P#

I went to verify the day of the week in a calendar (in fact I checked more than one) and I noticed that the Weekday value seems incorrect. For instance, the 2nd of March was a Tuesday so I would expect WEEKDAY to say 3 (considering Sunday to be the 1st day of the week, which is the universal norm), or perhaps 2 (considering Monday to be the 1st day of the week).
First thing that came to mind is, since the WEEKDAY is a number field which has been pre-populated, the person who populated it made a mistake.
So I went to verify this by running a query that would give me the correct day of the week by extracting it from the PDATE field:
SELECT DISTINCT pdate, EXTRACT(year from pdate) year,
    to_char(to_date(pdate,'DD/MM/YYYY'),'DY') weekdaycalc, weekday
    FROM ops$yyang00.Performance
    ORDER BY pdate
And to my astonishment, I got the following table as a return:
    PDATE
    YEAR
    WEEKDAYCALC
    WEEKDAY

As you can see, all of the above WEEKDAYCALC values are incorrect, and seem to match the incorrect values in WEEKDAY.
I could perhaps understand some weird WEEKDAY numbering if there is some general database setting where I could specify any day of the week to be the first day. However, I can't think of any logical explanation on why Oracle would call a Tuesday Sunday.
Could someone please advise what I mght be doing wrong? This is driving me insane!
Thank you in advance for all the help and support.

Based on your explanations, I changed the formula so the date format would be processed as YY rather than YYY.

The interesting bit here, is the original WEEKDAY field, which clearly has been created with the same mistake I did (this whole table wasn't created by me). I reckon I spotted a design bug.
    Regards,
    P.
No; you're still calling TO_DATE on something that is already a DATE, and you're still using an implicit conversion (only now you're using a format such that the current NLS settings don't cause you to get punished.  If your DBA changes the NLS settings next week, then you will have similar errors again.)
If you want to see what day of the week pdate is, then use:
    TO_CHAR (pdate, 'DY')
    or, to make it NLS-independent:
    TO_CHAR (pdate, 'DY', 'NLS_DATE_LANGUAGE=ENGLISH')
This is simpler than what you posted, it's more efficient and easier to debug and to maintain, and it also gets the results you want in all cases.
One more time: TO_DATE, as the name hints, converts something (a VARCHAR2, to be precise) TO a DATE.  If pdate is already a DATE, then what do you need to convert?  You're implicitly converting a DATE to a VARCHAR2, then explicitly converting that VARCHAR2 back to a DATE, and then calling TO_CHAR.  That's 3 function calls (1 of them error prone) where only 1 is needed.
Also if you ever have to reconcile 2-digit years with 4-digit years (and, again, in this problem you don't) the correct way is to convert the 2-digit year to a 4-digit year, not vice-versa.
Calling Tuesday the 1st day of the week could make sense in a particular application.

Of course, you need to make up a consistent representation of 0~6 for Mon~Sun.
