What is itunes doing with my files?

I am importing severalfiles from an agudiobook, the file plays but does not aapear in the browser, I have not modified th tags, but can't locate the original file, this used to be a piece of cake, now it's plain annoyong
thanks

Sorry for the brief response. They are imported from the original audio CDs into iTunes as mp3s. I then copy them onto the flash drive. Just to check, I transferred mp3s to the flash drive from my PC, and those seem to work. Using the PC, I did briefly "look" at the nonfunctional mp3s that were transferred onto the flash drive via Macbook/iTunes. All of the nonfunctional mp3s had a "._-" prefix before the track number and name. For example "._-01 China Grove.mp3." Again, I appreciate the help. I'd love to be able to use my Macbook to transfer songs to the flash drive.

• ITunes, what have you done with my files?

Irrelevant backstory;
I've actually had quite a turbulent time with technology lately- External harddrives blowing up, iTouch screens cracking in my pocket. Not to mention the screen on this ruddy Mac of mine. But I'm fairly competent with technology and so far have been able to fix most problems I've made for myself. This one is a little tougher so I'd really appreciate a little help.
This is a long story, mostly because information tends to yield better solutions. Feel free to skip to the short version below if you'd like to save your eyes the trouble.
Essentially, I replaced my iTouch yesterday. This 9 month old beauty had accumulated thousands of listens, and since it was manually managed from itunes Last.fm refused to scrobble any of them. So I made my mind up that I'd simply sync the new one automatically. That's when things started to go wrong. I had deleted all my music from the harddrive for the purpose of downloading fresh films, confident in the fact I had two recently backed up external harddrives containing all my music (about 3,000 songs I like, and 1,000 songs other people like that they give out to me for not having) and movies. Altogether, this came to around 24 GB. I realise this is not a huge amount in comparison to what some people have, but I'm a relative purist (except when drunk) and some of the music is exceptionally hard to find (ever heard of Ween?). So I'd really like it back. Now, as I've mentioned, one of the harddrives is a glorified paperweight, it fell 3 feet and is now making typically awful beeping/scratching noises and no longer fires up. The second one was working fine, however, so I plugged it in and set to work copying and pasting.
iTunes duly realised that none of the music was where it used to be, so I re-added my C:/Music folder to the library and got plenty of awesome duplicates. After deleting those, iTunes would play the song if I tried to click on it (exclamation point or not). Problem sorted then, except that because iTunes didn't realise it knew the locations of the songs once more, virtually none of those songs were synching with my spanking new iTouch. So I started manually clicking into the exclamated songs, which would play, and the sync. I got halfway through A before realising this would take forever. So I searched for a more automatic way. I tried readding all my songs again, but this just created tons more duplicates, and after deleting those went into the File->Library->Organise Library menu. Things go badly for me from here.
I knew what Consolidate would do and I didn't like it. I could guess what Reorganise would do, but hey, it might help, and it specifically said it wouldn't remove or delete any files. Just move them.
So I figured what the ****.. Why not?
Mistake.
After taking ages to reorganise my already organised music folders, iTunes promptly lost around 1500 songs. Individual songs and albums. It seems everything that wasn't a Compilation from Kings of Leon-Come Around Sundown (of which I now have half an album) was gone. So I resigned myself to locating the songs manually.
But they weren't there. The first 7 songs were there from Come Around Sundown. The remaining ones were not. I thought this pretty odd. Then i noticed that the rest of the songs weren't there either. Alphabetically, from "K" down, most of my music was simply not there. And I now had this funky new C:/Music/Music folder, which was just full off the songs I did have. After tinkering around with the XP search function and finding nothing anywhere, I decided to simply delete and start over. So I wiped my Music folder and recopied everything from the external HD. Re-opened the folder in iTunes and voila, everything was the exact same.
My only thought here is that I've managed to wipe the Music folder in the external HD, and replaced my wanted music with what iTunes has done to my laptop. Highly stupid, absolutely, but not absolutely out of character with deleting the music in the first place, or reorganising my music folder despite misgivings about it's effectiveness. In fact, it was par for the course with how I approached this problem last night.
Short version;
iTunes has, apparently while reorganising my library, deleted a number of songs from my computer. I now have far less music than I should, and it is not anywhere on my computer. The music folder has shrunk from 24GB to 16GB. My movies have been renamed into oblivion. This was not what I thought reorganising did.
Reorganising = File->Library->Organise Library->Reorganise files in the folder "Music"
"Music" is my music folder, containing all of my beloved tracks. It's located at C:/Music
What's interesting now is that when the iTouch synched with iTunes, it did manage to pick up all of my movies, despite them not being there. When the iTouch is plugged into iTunes and i look at the Movies tab (close to Summary on the top), everything is there. When I look at the Movies viewer on the left (below Music) it's empty. I tried to manually sync some movies to save space (plus, I've already watched Team America a dozen times now) it removed all of them. They will no longer go back on, but iTunes does show them in the Movies tab.
They're still there in theory, but neither a manual search for them nor allowing Movies to sync automatically puts them back onto the iPod touch.
Solution wise, I'm stumped. If the computer doesn't let me find them, then they're not there. But Reorganise expressly pointed out that files would be moved and renamed, not deleted. And the Music folder has shrunk in size, which indicates that iTunes was lying. The only ways out I can see are to a) attempt to repair the damaged hard drive which contains all my unharmed music or b) acquire all my missing music again.
Option a isn't bad, since I'd like to get that HDD working again anyway. Option b is going to take a long time and will be incomplete. Folks, after all this text what I really want to know is- Anyone got an option c?
Cheers! And apologies for the length. I tend to ramble.
~SFD
iTunes is fully up to date. The iTouch software is 4.3.2 instead of 4.3.3, but internet is expensive so downloading that update will not be done on Telstra wireless. The laptop is a dualbooted MBP running XP.

tl:dr?
Really?
There was a short version expressly for people who weren't bothered to read a myriad of text.
Meh, not that it matters anymore. I ended up redownloading 70-odd albums, so I have the bulk of my music back. And I still have no idea what iTunes did with my files, but I'll make sure it never does it again.
I would thank you for the help but you were utterly useless. Oh well, carry on.

• What Is iTunes Doing? 20 min. progress bar to write tags for 1 file?

What the heck is going on? I try to simply write info tags for one new movie conversion. I'm looking at at progress bar (??!!!) for twenty minutes now. What is itunes doing? This is beyond spooky.

ok, the writing tags to the video files thing I have seen before. I think in the end I switched to using a different program to convert videos, and it pretty much stopped happening. It puzzled me for a while, but after monkeying around with it I pretty much found it was a problem with the video file. If I had a problem with a certain file, then re-encoded it with different program, then the slow write to tags thing didn't happen. As for the hiccup playing video, that'll probably always happen to some extent. Is the usb drive idle before you are trying to play video off of it? Once itunes requests the video file from the drive it has to spin up the hard drive before it can play video from it. You could set your external drive to never spin down. Also check the firmware for the external drive, they often have updated firmware available for externals that no one ever checks on.

cor-el,
Thanks for your prompt reply. However, the sources you gave do not seem to apply exactly to my situation. I have attached some screenshots that show what the dialogue box looks like for a pdf download, and what my settings in the Apps panel of Options are. You will note in the first screenshot that I have checked the box to handle this file type automatically; however, the next time I try to download a file of that type, the same dialogue box appears looking exactly like the one shown, so checking the "automatic" option appears to do nothing. The files to be downloaded from my Gmail messages are not generic or altered file types - they are shown as pdf, doc, docx, etc. So while your intent was good, your post did not help. Thanks anyway.

• When I try to open a bookmark I get a box that says "what should firefox do with this file?" When I try to change the "open with Internet Explorer" I can't find firefox ? Last week this bookmark worked fine.

When I open a bookmark a box pops up that says "What should firefox do with this file? "open with Internet Explorer? When I browse I can't find firefox to change to. Last week this book mark worked perfectly.

Start Firefox in [[Safe Mode]] to check if one of your add-ons is causing your problem (switch to the DEFAULT theme: Tools > Add-ons > Themes).
See [[Troubleshooting extensions and themes]] and [[Troubleshooting plugins]]
If it does work in Safe-mode then disable all your extensions and then try to find which is causing it by enabling one at a time until the problem reappears.
You can use "Disable all add-ons" on the ''Safe mode'' start window.
You have to close and restart Firefox after each change via "File > Exit" (on Mac: "Firefox > Quit")

• What are people doing with 60p footage

I see this question asked a lot here and in the iMovie forum. For the life of me I can not imagine what people are doing with it. When I watch 60p footage it looks "fake" to me. Plus if you are using 1080p60 the only thing you can watch it on is on a computer or directly off your camera or disk. Meaning Bluray does not support it and you can not broadcast it, so why bother? Slow motion effects?
Just curious.

Nobody's putting 60p on the web the file sizes get too large and there is no point in the frame rate with the screen refresh of a computer There really isn't much point of 60p unless you using it to reconform for slomo.

• What are you doing with software (games) designed to run on Snow Leopard. Have you heard of anyone making a patch for LION?

What are you doing with software (games) designed to run on Snow Leopard when the Os is Lion?

It is up to the publishers of games to accommodate their software to Lion.
Blizzard, publisher of StarCraft, WarCraft, and Diablo, has posted a statement about that -
Blizzard Support
Although they were able to create patches to allow the use of their (OS 9) games in OS X up through Snow Leopard, apparently from their perspective it is not possible to patch those games for Lion.

• What am i doing wrong, SWF File

Hello all,
This is driving me crazy!
I have made a flex app, that imports a swf file, converts it to a movie clip, and then pulls which frame to display from a XML file, that is checked every second. This works fine when using the following SWF file - http://davidtest.webcastglobal.com/swf/flash.swf
Although when i tried re-creating my own example - http://davidtest.webcastglobal.com/swf/flash2.swf
my flex app fails to respond correctly. THe swf file just loops thru all the frames in one go, and fails to take into account the XML file pointing at what frame to look at, and fails to look at the HTTPS service.
Ok so here is an example of the app with both examples embeded.
http://davidtest.webcastglobal.com/swfwork/Main.html - This is using the working swf file,
http://davidtest.webcastglobal.com/swfbroke/Main.html - This is using the swf file that i have created.
THe code that i am using to achieve this is as follows -
<?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8"?>
<mx:Application xmlns:mx="http://www.adobe.com/2006/mxml" layout="absolute" applicationComplete="load()">
<mx:Script>
<![CDATA[
import mx.rpc.events.ResultEvent;
[Bindable] public var dataDump:String = "datadump";
[Bindable] private var myText:String
private var flashMovie:MovieClip;
private function initMovie():void{
flashMovie = loader.content as MovieClip;
private function load():void{
flashMovie.gotoAndStop(myText)
getImage.send();
setTimeout(load,1000);
private function handleImage(event:ResultEvent):void
myText = event.result.framelocation;
]]>
</mx:Script>
<mx:SWFLoader id="loader" source="flash2.swf" complete="initMovie()" x="-9" y="-3"/>
<mx:Button label="Next" click="flashMovie.nextFrame()" x="78" y="405"/>
<mx:Button label="Previous" click="flashMovie.prevFrame()" x="0" y="405"/>
<mx:Button label="4" click="flashMovie.gotoAndPlay(7)" x="156" y="405"/>
<mx:HTTPService id="getImage" result="handleImage(event)" url="http://davidtest.webcastglobal.com/change.xml" method="POST">
<mx:request xmlns="">
<dataDumping>
{dataDump}
</dataDumping>
</mx:request>
</mx:HTTPService>
<mx:Text x="817" y="10" text="Total: {myText}" width="157"/>
</mx:Application>
My question is when creating my own swf file, what am i doing wrong? Flex clearly isnt interacting with it in the same way as the original swf, by the way, this swf was taken from a tutorial.
If anyone could point me in a direction or offer help on this i would be thankful. Im sure i am just missing something out when i create my swf in flash

1. your swf file must be published for as3.
2. it should consist of a main timeline with more than 1 frame.
3. it needs as many frames as you're going to reference in the xml.
4. that main timeline should contain objects on its frames so you can see when the main timeline is on one frame vs another referenced in your xml.
that's it. those are the only requirements of the swf.
have you confirmed that intiMovie() is called first and then load()? if so, how did you confirm?

• What do I do with JS file exported from After FX?

I exported a .swf file from After Effects, and it also
exported a Javascript file (as well as an .html file)
What do I do with the JS file? where does it go?

Unfortunately, the answer is, you don't. The requirements for HTML displayed in an e-mail reader are very different than those for HTML displayed in a browser. The output of Muse won't work as an HTML e-mail. You could upload the Muse site as a website and provide a link to it in an e-mail, but the HTML generated by Muse is not suitable for direct display by an e-mail program.

• What is the deal with .wma files?

I recently purchased a 3rd generation nano, and I am pretty sure that I might be able to launch the space shuttle with this thing. There seems to be nothing that it can't do--EXCEPT download audiobooks from my library...which is one of the primary reasons that I wanted the thing! What is the problem? Why can't Apple get it's act together with this file extension? Do I really need to go out and buy ANOTHER .mp3 player just to listen to audiobooks?

Have you even tried? It's easy!
Use File -> Add File to Library... then select the .wma file, a warning will appear saying ..."iTunes will automatically convert them to the AAC format"... go ahead, the result will be a .m4a file in the music library.
Then select the added file, use File -> Get Info, in the summary, at the bottom, look at the file location. if you want the audiobook to appear on in its respective library (not with the music) then rename that file changing the extension to .m4b, delete the original entry on iTunes, use File -> Import... to select the renamed file and that's it, look for it in Audiobooks.
You may want to add cover art, correct the tags, perhaps set equalizer preset (to spoken word), all that is done with the Get Info panel, the other tabs let you do it.
