What is Landscape mode?

I have recently bought the Canon t4i, and as I was looking through the different modes on the dial I noticed "Landscape" When shooting pictures/video, what are the differences between being in Manual/Automatic versus Landscape? Is there a significant advantage while using this mode?
Thanks for any information.

Entry-level bodies as well as the mid-tier bodies (all the Rebels, but plus the bodies with 2-digit models such as the 60D and 70D) have "scene" modes.
These are basically full-automatic modes but they bias your cameras exposure settings based on an understanding of what you're trying to shoot.
For any given shot, there are lots of combinations of shuter speed, aperture (f-stop), and ISO that will add up to the "equivalent" exposure (the right amount of light is recieved at the sensor.)  For example you could use a wide aperture open with a short exposure time... or narrow the aperture opening but compensate by using a longer exposure time.)
It turns out that while there are a number of ways to combine f-stop, shutter speed, and ISO to get the same "equivalent" exposure... the shots will not actually be the same.
When shooting action, for example, you probably want a faster shutter speed so you can "freeze" action otherwise you end up with a blurred subject because they moved while the shutter was open.   To get a faster shutter exposure, the aperture is opened considerably so that it can gather more light in the brief moment that the shutter is open.  BUT... when the aperture is wider, it narrows the "depth of field" -- or range of distances at which a subject will appear to be more-or-less acceptably focused.  That narrow depth of field is bad for landscape photographers... who generally want as much to be in acceptable focus as possible.
When shooting landscape, the computer biases the exposure by using a small aperture (high f-stop value) and compensating for the fact that the lens is now limiting how much light travels through... but keeping the shutter open much longer so that it ultimately gathers the same amount of light.  This results in an image with a very broad depth-of-field (lots of stuff is in acceptable focus -- even at a vast range of distances.)
The high end bodies (bodies that only have a single digit.... like the 7D, 5D, and 1D bodies) do not have these "scene" based modes because they tend to be targeted at advanced photographers (whehter professionals or advanced non-professionals.)  Those shooters typically know that, for a landscape, they'd just need to set a smaller aperture (higher f-stop) and compensate by using a longer shutter speed.
BTW... since the shutter speed will be getting slower, you'll want to keep an eye on the shutter speed the camera actually plans to use.  If you are attempting to hand-hold the camera for the shot, then you'd want to make sure you're able to be steady while the shutter is open -- or you can get a blurred result due to camera-movement.
A good book to help understand these concepts is Bryan Peterson's book "Understanding Exposure" -- it's specifically written to help new owners of DSLRs understand how to take control of their camera by teaching you how to shoot completely in manual mode for more creative and better looking results.  The Scott Kelby Digital Photography series of books (I think there are 4 volumes now) is also very popular.

To permanently delete, touch Mailboxes, uppper left corner of left sidebar, then the Account and Trash, then Touch Edit upper right of left sidebar, then Delete All lower left, and confirm and they are permanently gone.

  • Keyboard won't react when in landscape mode on SMS?

    Hi There.
    I updated my 5S to the IOS8.
After that, I had problems when writing an SMS. Sometimes (almost every time) the keyboard doesn’t react to anything when turning to landscape mode. I then have to turn the phone upright, and the down to landscape again. The screen then goes black, and I can press the home-button to see the screen again.
I actually thought this was a bug in IOS8 since it appeared after the update.
Now I bought the IPhone 6. And I set that up with the complete backup from my 5S. I then updated to IOS 8.0.2, and the problem is also on my IP6
I can’t find anyone else with this problem, so what can I do now?
Is the only solution to reset the IP6 to factory default, and install sms, and contacts via iCloud?
But then I have to install all the apps manually?
I have a lot of apps with personal settings, and different mail accounts. I really don’t want to do all this.
    Anyone have a solution?
    Kind regards.

Same issue here. Just did the download now I'll hit the alpha key on the screen and it does not register. Only happens in landscape mode. Only tried it on imessage and SMS, did not try email yet.

  • IPhone 4 stuck in landscape mode

For the last couple of days my iPhone has been stuck in landscape mode.  No matter what I do it will not switch out of landscape.  I've tried shutting it off, closing apps and even restored my phone but whenever I go into an app it automatically switches to landscape.
    Anyone else have this problem????
    Thanks

Double click the home button scroll over to the audio controlls there is a button on the left that looks like a reload button that locks the orientation

  • Why will iphone not play video in landscape mode anymore

I am a HUGE purchaser and user of iTunes Music Videos and on my iPhone, I was happily playing them in playlists and watching them in landscape orientation as a video playlist.
I was quite upset when I bought my first iPad and found that it simply would not support this basic (for me) functionality.   But I searched and found a music video playlist app and purchased what SHOULD HAVE BEEN included functionality on the iPad.   Seriously, if the iPhone could do this basic operation why shouldn't the iPad, which is much better suited for video playlists with the bigger screen?
Now, after updating to iOS7, you've broken the functionality even moreso.   Imagine my joy, surprise and sheer level of cursing and swearing when I turned my videos into landscape mode and found some dickbag has decided I should see album covers instead of my video in full screen on the phone.
So, Apple, the "We sell devices so that we can also sell the media" company,   why are you screwing with something that should be basic and intuitive on the phone and ipad?
I, and I expect everyone else, expect to open the music app, go to the music videos playlist automatically generated in that app (BY your programmers) and then be able to play the videos from the video playlists you allow me to create - my own playlists in both portrait and landscape modes.
So please fix this ever-increasing pain in the ***.    I will not be purchasing any more videos (And yes, check my history, I am quite likely in the top 5% of purchasers of music videos) because you are slowly removing the intuitive methods for playing them.
    David Patrie

A revolutionary A7 processor with 64-bit architecture, and none of those bits are smart enough to figure out "hey, maybe if my owner is listening to a video in the Music app and switches to landscape mode they're more interested in seeing the video larger, not unrelated album art thumbnails. Let me temporarily borrow the landscape view logic from the Video app."?
I hope they fix this at least by iOS 8. It's not logical (let alone user friendly) to exit out of the Music app and go into a separate Video app just to see a music video in landscape. The ironic thing is the Video app forces videos to be landscape – as if the logic it follows is that anyone watching a video really wants to see it in landscape – but yet that logic gets kicked off the boat when the video digits cross the river over to Music app land.

  • Has Apple come up with a solution to remove the iPad sidebar in Mail while in landscape mode?

    Hi, Everyone.
When I review open Mail, I need to review it in landscape mode, so I can use the ipad cover's keyboard to type my replies. I would like to be able to hide (or even shrink) the sidebar. Unlike the "relative" privacy of viewing your email at your desk, the ipad is meant to be a mobile device: I use it on the train, I take it to meetings, etc.  It's annoying to have people looking over my shoulder or sitting next to me in a conference table able to glance over and, in effect, see the names of the last 11 people or entities that have emailed me  - with the subjects. (I work in HR, handling a lot of staff and faculty compensation, discipline, ando other politically charged issues - so privacy is kind of a big deal)  Yes, I could flip it to portrait mode and hide the sidebar, but that forces me to tilt my cover's bluetooth keyboard 90 degrees to the side and I am not yet proficient in typing sideways.
I've seen mutiple posts over the past year about this.  I'm using IOS 8.1.3.  Has Apple resolved this or offered a suitable accommodation?
    Thank you for any replies.

TThe answer is simple. No Apple has not implemented a way to hide the preview pane of the mail app when you use the device in landscape mode. I use my iPad in landscape mode 95% of the time as well, so that I can use the larger keys on the virtual keyboard. You can hide the preview of what the emails say I Settings>Mail, contacts, calendars>Preview>None. If you do that, at least you will be hiding the beginning of the message so that nobody can read it. I realize that's not your solution, but it might help.
I also suggest that you leave feedback for Apple.

  • Since the upgrade to 8.1.2, I can only use "messaging" in landscape mode and not portrait.  Anyone else having this problem?

I unable to view or type messages vertical or portrait mode...it appears to be locked in horizontal or landscape mode. Any suggestions?

What user troubleshooting have you tried? User steps are restart, reset, restore from backup, restore as new. There is no lock for the iPhone in Landscape mode, so I believe a reset should help. Also, double-tap the home button and bring up the multi-tasking bar, find the Messages app and then swipe upwards on the app thumbnail to force it closed.

  • Music videos in landscape mode ever coming back???

Dear Apple, I doubt you'll read this or do anything but I guess it's worth a try.  It used to be that when you played a music video via the musof app on your iphone, it would display the video in landscape mode. Now, extermely inituitively, turning your phone to the side shows a selection of your album covers. No one wants that. I seriously can not think of one person. Looking in your own forums you have questions in 2013 asking to bring this back but no response has been given. That's called arrogance. This is not some big technical ask. It would take you little to no time so what gives? You say you care about the customer experience but between this and the iTunes library syncing issues I am beginning to question that.

You're correct as there is no Apple here in this user to user technical forum.

Alas, this did not help me. I don't have an Orientation Button or any Icon that would help in this endeavor. At the bottom of my Iphone 4s, there are 3 icons: Phone, Mail and Safari. That's it. I can't get those icons to move.
What is it you're trying to do?  If you're looking for orientation lock in iOS 7, swipe up from the bottom of your phone to access control center.  Orientation lock is the top right icon.

  • IPhone 5s won't switch to landscape mode

I have the iPhone 5s (32GB) and the software currently being used is up to date (IOS 7.1.1).
My problem is that my phone won't switch to landscape mode. When I take pictures, it won't turn over, and all other apps, even when I play games like Temple Run, it won't allow the character to move side to side.
I have checked to see if my phone's orientation lock is on, which it is not. I have done a hard reset which did not fix it. I also did a restore where I restored it completely and set it up as a new phone, and restored it and set it up with a backup. Nothing has helped it!!
I don't know what to do, and would much rather figure it out than go to the Apple Store and get it looked at. If you have any knowledge or anything that can potentially help resolve this issue, i'd be very much appreciated!!
    Thanks

try to put it on DFU Mode And Restore Again
if you don't know how to put it
    How to enter DFU mode:
Plug your device into your computer
Turn off the device by holding the Sleep/Wake or Power button and swiping it off
Hold the power button for 3 seconds
Begin holding the Home button without releasing the Sleep/Power button for 10 seconds
Release the power button and continue holding the home button until you get a popup from iTunes that your device is recognized as being in recovery mode.

  • Apps won't switch to landscape mode

Many of my apps won't switch to landscape mode (e.g., Facebook, Twitter, Yelp).  I know that landscape works on my phone because Photos, Messages, Calculator, etc. will switch to landscape mode.  Also, I don't have the portrait lock on.  The apps used to switch to landscape - what's up?  Could it be because of the new update?

Then the next steps in user troubleshooting are restore from backup, and if necessary restore as new. I would also ask, have you checked to make sure that the Orientation Lock is not on? Check in the status bar to see if you see a small padlock with a circular arrow around it next to the battery status. If so, you turn this off from the Control Center. Swipe upwards from off the bottom of the screen, then Orientation Lock is on the top row all the way to the right. White is on, black is off. I have also read that there is a screen zoom setting, either in Display & Brightness or Wallpaper. I don't have an iPhone 6, so I cannot compare. Supposedly in the zoom setting, it can prevent some things from happening, and I believe landscape orientation was one of them.

  • Print Layout Difficulties - printing in landscape mode

Haven't upgraded to Pages 2 yet; in the meantime, here's a question related to Pages 1:
How does one properly print in landscape mode directly from Pages? I'm trying to print a simple CD booklet, but all I get when printing directly from Pages is my page printed at the bottom of the page. This happens even when I select one of the landscape orientations (and I've tried all of them) from the Print Layout before printing.
I'd simply change the page setup, but Pages gives me no way to rotate any of the objects once my once-horizontal document is now vertically oriented.
On the other hand, if I do a print preview and save as PDF, I am able to print in landscape orientation from Preview. Which is fine, but having to take the extra two or three steps is frustrating.
    Thanks,
    Kevin

    Hullo Kevin:
I'm a bit surprised (and intrigued) by this. Seems to me you're starting off right, and the only suggestion I have to make (directly, that is) is to check whether you've used the available scaling options: i.e., if your landscape mode fills only half the page, will 200% make it fill the lot - or is the landscape orientation just refusing to rotate your content? From what you say, maybe it is, and you'll have found the way around it. But it seems pretty odd to me that you can print from preview as you want, but not from the original. Maybe somebody else can shed some light on this for you.
But the most constructive reason I have for replying to you is that I do recall a CD booklet template - which might save you a lot of trouble. I can't tell whether it will suit you; but very likely it might.
You'll find it on Gerry Straathof's pagesuser.com. It's called Monkey Business CD Booklet, for a CD that was released with it, and the content would seem pretty flexible within the template: it could like as not suit a very different look from the sample shown. Please notice the conditions that go with it, but I think I summarise them fairly in that it's mainly the content that is protected, rather than use of the template.
In any case the site is live - it has a forum just like this one; and by the way Gerry seems to know his way around Pages pretty well, so you might like to put your question more directly to his notice by posting it on his site.
So I've no real answer to your question - but I hope helps you to find one.
    Best Wishes and Good Luck.

  • Filling out PDF forms in Landscape Mode

I have used Preview to fill out PDF forms in Portrait mode and it's very nice because I can save the modified file and email it to others, or just keep it for reference. Anyway, I downloaded a PDF form and tried to fill out the text. It highlights the form fields just right, with the blue glowy rectangle and everything, and when I type in the text it appears just fine, until that field loses focus, then the text goes goofy--it shows up starting at the right hand side of the field and goes in the wrong direction. It's as if Preview still thinks that the PDF is in portrait mode even though it's in landscape mode. Do you know what I'm doing wrong or if there's a fix out there?
