What is LiveCycle Designer capable of?

I currently use MS Word 2003 to create RFP forms as part of my company's salesforce automation.  Word allows the users to use the form fields and save with fields modified (return as email attachment), which is perfectly fine.  However, these forms are used on a worldwide basis and there are European versions of word that don't recognize table formatting which makes the forms look elementary and un-professional.  Can I create/transfer these forms into LiveCycle Designer ES and have this same functionality?  Can the user modify a form with Adobe Reader and save the modifications?  These forms cannot have email submission only as they are passed through different channels before being returned back to my company and not everyone out there has scanning capabilities to return completed forms that have been printed.
Can this software provide this kind of solution (I already have it!)?

There is a facility to import word forms into Designer and turn them into PDF Forms. As with any format change I cannot guarantee that you will not have to "touch up" the converted form. Once the form is a PDF then the issues you raised about the European distribution should be resolved.

  • What is LiveCycle Designer?

    I just purchased the creative cloud annual contract monthly subscription.  Installed all the software, just cause and I see the Adobe LiveCycle Designer software is installed though I have no idea what software it came with.
    I see no where on the site or in the help that tells me what this software is or does.  I was looking for the quick description that says what it is for.  Does Adobe just assume we know what every single software of theirs is and does?  I don't even know what software it was installed with.
    I watched a minute of a video on their Adobe TV site but all I caught were buzz words that makes me think it has something to do with acrobat and pdf's but that's about it.
    When I was using CS3 I primarily stuck with Dreamweaver, Fireworks and Flash.
    Sorry if I seem like an idiot but really just wanted a quick this is what this software is and does description but I can't find it anywhere in the softwares help or on their site.
    Thanks.

    It's a design tool for dynamic forms that can then be rendered in either XML or PDF formats.  It comes bundled with Acrobat Pro X.  It has some really nice features too - I've recently used it to create a questionnaire to track progress with a PDSA cycle from a number of different types of participants.  When they complete and submit the form, it comes to me as an email and when I open it, it automatically asks me if I want it compiled with other responses received.  It tracks who and when submitted so that I can chase the latecomers.  And then exports the compiled date out into Excel or a variety of other formats.  Saves me a ton of time

    Acrobat XI is not distributed with Designer. Designer is now a separate product. You can create forms in Acrobat as an AcroForm or using Forms Central (an online forms program). You can print the form to a new PDF and then recreate the fields in Acrobat using the recognize form fields. You will likely have to fix the form fields, but that would be the process. Generally, once a form is taken to Designer, you can't bring it back without such steps.
    Designer is available with AA8 - AAX, but since is a separate product as I indicated.

  • What is the latest version of adobe livecycle designer for mac?

    Hello Guys,
    I am new for Adobe LiveCycle Designer.
    Can some one guide me what is the latest version for Mac.
    Thanks in advance.
    Regards
    HARI

    Hi HARI,
    Yes, that short video is demonstrating LC Designer (albeit an earlier version).
    The video is showing how to create a dynamic form, where you can add and remove items at runtime and have other dynamic features. Do develop this type of form you will need LC Designer ES2 (current version 9). As I said this runs on Windows, so you would need a virtual machine on the Mac to run Windows.
    LC Designer comes with Acrobat X Pro for Windows (Note it does NOT come with Acrobat X Pro for Mac). See http://www.adobe.com/products/acrobat/matrix.html.
    You also need to consider what your users will have to fill in the forms: Acrobat OR Reader. There are some features that will not be available in Reader unless you Reader enable the form. For example users with Reader will not be able to save their data in a form that has not been Reader enabled.
    More info on that here: http://assure.ly/gYyYc2
    You can also see some short sample forms here, which will give you an idea on some of the dynamic features: http://assure.ly/eEPuCM. All of these were created with LC Designer.
    Forms that are created in LC Designer are in accordance with the XFA specification. They are wrapped in a PDF wrapper that allows then to be opened in Acrobat/Reader. However they are not like a standard/native PDF and some standard Acrobat features, like commenting may not be available.
    You can also create forms directly in Acrobat, these are called AcroForms. They can be used to collect data, but generally don't have the same level of dynamic behaviour that you saw in the video.
    There are plenty of examples on the forums, so I would recommend that you explore these before you make any purchase. There can be a learning curve, depending on whether you have scripted before.
    Hope that helps,
    Niall

  • If I use adobe reader 7.0 to open LiveCycle Designer ES2, what will happen?

    Hi,
    I am planning to recommend adobe LiveCycle Designer ES2 as a forms designer software to a corporate client. But it seems that the client is still using the old version of adobe reader 7.0.
    So I need to know that is it essential to use adobe reader 9.0 for designer ES2, and if by adobe reader 7.0, what problem would be happen?
    It is very helpful If there is some detailed information about it.
    Thanks
    En Shoku

    Hi,
    When you design a form in LC Designer ES2 you can set the target version of Acrobat/Reader in the File > Form Properties > Defaults tab.
    While you can target v7, you need to be aware that some of the functionality in LC Designer ES2 is not supported in Reader v7. For example in LC Designer you can set the presence of an object to 'visible (screen only)', but this is not supported in Reader v7, so would cause a problem. So for each form you would need to set the target version and then check the Warnings palette to see if there are any problems.
    Check out the post by John Brinkman discussing Acrobat X, as this has a very handy table for the LC Designer/XFA Specification and Acrobat/Reader versions: Acrobat X and XFA 3.3
    XFA Version
    Acrobat/Reader
    2.1
    6.02
    2.2
    7.0
    2.3
    7.0.1, 7.02
    2.4
    7.0.5, 7.0.7
    2.5
    8.0
    2.6
    8.1, 8.1.1
    2.8
    9.0
    3.0
    9.1, 9.2, 9.3
    3.3
    10.0
    You can see there are alot of changes around v7 and that if the user has Reader v7.0.7, then you can utilise the features in XFA Specification 2.4.
    The other issue to be aware of is that users with Reader will NOT be able to save data in the form UNLESS the form has been Reader Enabled before the form is deployed.
    The form can be Reader Enabled in two ways:
    Using Acrobat Standard v9 or Acrobat Professional v7 or v8. Has licence restrictions, see EULA.
    Using a server produce called Adobe LiveCycle Reader Extensions ES2. Additional costs.
    Here is a summary of the options available to users with Reader, depending on whether the form is Reader Enabled AND how it was enabled:
    There is a post here and a PDF summary:

    Hope that helps,

  • We were using Adobe Livecycle Designer 7.0 for creating forms, what is new product replacement?

    We were using Adobe Livecycle designer 7.0 (circa 2004) for creating our own dynamic forms.  The program has since failed to work, we cant locate the old disk.  What is the new product replacement that will allow us to build new forms from scratch with our own fields and data collection?

    LiveCycle Designer no longer comes with the Windows version of Acrobat Pro, but it can be purchased separately (soon): http://www.adobe.com/products/livecycle/tools/designer.html

  • What is the best upgrade path from LiveCycle Designer 8.0?

    Back in June 2010, I developed a website for a client which included some interactive forms created with LiveCycle Designer 8.0 (came with Adobe CS3.) He recently brought to my attention the fact that the data filled in by his customers on the forms does not display in PDF docs on his iPhone or Android smartphone (the PDFs and filled-in data display fine via desktop browsers.) Can anyone suggest the best (least expensive, least painful... I don't want to rewrite his site in HTML5) solution? E.g., upgrade my LiveCycle Designer 8.0 version and reinstall the forms on his site? Would that be to Acrobat X Pro? Does a second set of forms need to be created for mobile format? Suggestions would be appreciated. Here is his web page with links to the existing 3 forms. Thanks. -Bob C.

    Thanks for your feedback. I appreciate it. Since my post, I noticed that Adobe offers free apps for iOS and android devices "to view and work with PDF files." Called: Adobe Reader X for mobile. Any idea whether these apps would resolve the issue described above? (Filled-in data on forms created on desktops not displaying on mobile devices?) Unfortunately, I don't have an android device to test with and my iPhone hardware is not current enough to load the ios app. -Thank you.

  • LIVECYCLE DESIGNER ON MAC

    I am attempting to convince my boss to replace my mini PC with a Mac, as I primarily use Creative Suite, and this tiny little box has a lot of difficulty with it, among other problems.
    My concern is that I created all of our company forms using LiveCycle Designer, and to my knowledge, this program is not available on Mac.
    Is there a program for Mac that will allow me to edit these interactive forms in the same manner as LiveCycle Designer?  I have been told that Acrobat alone is capable of the same types of edits, but I am unsure of how to do it.  I've gone through the Forms on Acrobat and what I've found is not nearly as intuitive as LiveCycle Designer.
    If anyone could tell me first, if Acrobat is capable of this, and second, where I might get some good information on how to do it, I would appreciate it.
    If Acrobat isn't the best program to use, what could I use instead?  I need to be able to edit/create interactive pdf forms with input fields, radio buttons, drop downs, etc, and be able to set up Rich Text capable input fields as well.
    Thanks!

    So I think I have come to an understanding about Forms in Acrobat Pro 9 (both Mac & PC). I've used Acrobat 9 Pro on the PC and I must say that LiveCycle Designer ES 8 that ships with Acrobat Pro on the PC is VERY buggy. It crashed on me more than a few times (to the point of being ridiculous). I was, in all fairness, pushing it to do some fairly complicated things with layout and fields. After going through the cross-grade to the mac platform and realizing that LiveCycle does not ship with Mac AP9, I followed the suggestion of another poster who recommended this process for Mac Forms creation and it worked beutifully (it is deceptivley simple):
    1) Create your form layout in Illustrator (far superior, and more stable vector layout tools to LiveCycle PC anyway), draw in your text fields with a .5 stoked box with a no fill box (white fill can cover up your text field content if it is above), save as a PDF and then simply open this new document into AP9. By the way AI CS4 Mac will place text from Microsoft Word Docs no problems - I even did this over a null modem connection directly from my PC - no complaints.
    2) Go to the Forms > Add or Edit Fields... I wouldnt bother running "Start Form Wizard..." as in this process AP9 wont detect text fields anyway. Start by adding textfields directly on top of the stroked boxes you've created in the AI PDF. (it may ask you to save a copy of the document in order to Extend Acrobat Features for Reader). You will now be placed in Form editing mode.
    3) Add buttons, signature fields, text fields - really everything LiveCycle Designer does only in a more streamlined and consolidated way. Once again - far more stable and predictable process. You can switch between prevewing the document and editing it very easily.
    That's it basically it. Forms editing on the Mac is simply more integrated into Acrobat Pro 9. Seems like to the tools aren't there becuase no LiveCycle - but they are. If you want to give reader users the power to fill and save forms from Free Reader, go to the Advanced menu and select "Extend Features in Adobe Reader..."
    Let me know if this works for you - After using this process in my opinion - who needs LiveCycle Designer on the PC? If you are good with Illustrator, you'll make better looking forms anyway. And the "Add Text Field" tool in the Forms Editing mode on the Mac is far less jumpy than LiveCycle. - Thanks - AM

  • Adobe LiveCycle Designer ES closes every time I open it :(

    Hello all, I want to thank you beforehand for the help regarding this matter. I use Windows Vista and my Adobe LiveCycle Designer was working before but for the last week and a half or so I have not been able to get it to work! I have done scandisk/defrag/and have multiple software to keep my computer clean so I have taken those precautions beforehand. To the problem...:
    My Adobe LiveCycle Designer opens up and it was working previously as mentioned, but when I try to open it by either opening or converting a form or creating a new form with a template, I am not able to as it gives me an error message and closes! It gives me an error message of "Adobe LiveCycle Designer ES has stopped working" and a screenshot of this is provided at the following link:
    http://www.mediafire.com/imgbnc.php/bc59d422150595157c212a5b181313244g.jpg
    I don't know what to do and wanted to see if I could solve this problem before I was forced to try to manually reinstall it so hopefully I don't have to go through that. I appreciate the help once again!

    I am dealing with the same problem. I called Adobe technical support and spent hours to fix the problem but none worked. I tried to explain them the error might be caused by the Activation process but they just made me uninstall and install application several times.
    When I start LiveCycle it gives the following error: adobe livecycle designer es has stopped working.
    I start debugger to see what's going on and get the following exception: Unhandled exception at 0x773db663 in FormDesigner.exe: 0xC015000F: The activation context being deactivated is not the most recently activated one.
    Does anyone know how to deactivate this product manually? Because deactivate menu is dimmed and I cannot deactivate product from the program. I believe if I can just remove activation info and activate it again this problem might disappear.
    Thanks

    Shawn,
    This may be a couple of known things; one is related to your specific installation (may have become corrupted if you did an upgrade from a previous version, especially if you upgraded from Beta?) Or, it may be related to a known SQL Server compatibility bug for which a hotfix will shortly be posted. (Problem with some Microsoft DLLs that get updated if you install SQL server).
    If you have SQL Server installed, try looking on these forums for a patch that should be posted within the next 2 days. If not - please contact me directly, as I'd like to get someone on my development team to help look through your installation and see what the problem is, so we can fix this properly.

  • How can I use a script in a Livecycle Designer form, to force display of text in Title Case?

    Hello,
    I am a 'novice' who is DIY'ing the construction of a dynamic pdf form, using Adobe Livecycle Designer 7 (I know, it's a VERY old version!)
    [So, any help that comes along must be 'for Idiots'!]
    I need to construct a code (Java script?) so that a few of my text-fields DISPLAY data in Title Case - IRRESPECTIVE of how the user types in the data.
    So, for example, in a "Address" text-field...
    If someone types in ..
    "205 sherborne avenue"
    - OR -
    "205 Sherborne avenue"
    - OR -
    "205 SHERBORNE AVENUE"...
    I need the data to be DISPLAYED ESSENTIALLY as...
    "205 Sherborne Avenue".
    I found the following code online, and tried it in the 'exit' event of the field I need to modify (with 'language' selected as JavaScript)...
    <   this.rawValue = this.rawValue.replace(/\b([a-z])/g, function (_, initial) {return initial.toUpperCase();});   >
    ... This did convert all the 'initial' letters of the words to Upper Case - AS LONG AS they were not ALL typed in Upper Case!
    So, that code worked for the first two of my samples for Sherborne Avenue above - but it did NOT work for the last one...
    That is, "205 SHERBORNE AVENUE" did NOT get converted to Title Case - which is what I need help with.
    Thanks in advance...

    Hey TundraSteve,
    Thanks a tonne!
    Works perfectly!!!
    In fact, your solution is so elegant and direct, that even I am beginning to get a sense of how it works... I have looked at LOTS of similar codes in the past few days, but was not at all getting a sense of how they are working! But comparing your solution with the earlier one I mentioned, I am beginning to get a sense of things!
    Any suggestions for what I should read-up in order to understand this king of coding?
    I have basically been using the built-in 'Help' - and, trial-and-error - and I have designed my first form - a pretty elaborate one, actually!
    So, it would be great if you could guide me through the 'learning curve' a bit!
    [I have figured-out the 'basics' - that is, I can lay out the form, use 'if-expressions' (FormCalc), trigger events, even build Subforms that are hidden but 'appear' when triggered by other actions, and so on. What I can't figure out are the various 'code languages' (syntax?) that are being used - like " var sometext", for eg.!]
    Cheers, and thanks again!

  • LiveCycle Designer 8-scripting search Access DB records

    Hi
    I am new to LiveCycle Designer 8 having it included with Acrobat Pro 8. I have been trying to set up a basic form that can interact with an Access 2007 DB. Following the help guide, online tutorials, I have been able to set up the data connection, figure out how to establish a "trusted environment" and added several buttons as a test. Using JS, the next, previous, update, first and last buttons work, populating the form fields with the sample DB data and updating the DB (update). Can't get the add new record button to work even though the JS scripting is precisely that shown in the same tutorials for the other buttons. If I delete the text in the on screen cells in the .pdf form, enter new text, click add, all that I added disappears. Checking the DB, nothing has been added. Same difficulty with deleting a record, and the current opened record does not delete.
    Reading a posting suggesting setting up an SQL query instead, leaving of any auto-incrementing item (like ID), and using the JS scripting for the button (don't yet know how to use SQL for next, previous, update, etc.), still couldn't get the add new or delete to work. Tried every combo of no user name, no password to user name, password blank, etc. No success.
    The other needed capability for the test form is the ability to search the DB records, for example by name or ID, for example by the user entering a name or ID in a text input box, clicking a "search" button and the record (if it exists) displaying in the other cells. Then, once found, it could be updated or deleted. One tutorial aims to populate a drop down list box with the data from a specific DB column. It doesn't use JS, rather FormCalc (which kept generating error messages, when I tested it out))and is far too complex for my limited novice skills. If I could display a drop down list box with all of the names and ID's in a DB, the user could choose one and once the record would populate the cells, they could update or delete it.
    So, I'm stuck. Can't get the add new or delete to work and can't figure out how to set up a search to identify records for update or delete. I've read and read anything I can find online, in the Adobe knowledge base, forum, blog postings, trying out many ideas without any success.
    I am hoping someone can help with some suggestions, sample scripts, hopefully understandable by a beginner.
    Any help would be appreciated.
    Kind Regards,
    Stephen

  • LiveCycle Designer 8.0 Drop-down menu help - newbie

    I am new with LiveCycle and do not know much about coding and the like. I've search the forums and have not found quite what I need. (It might be because I don't know the correct terms to search - so I apologize in advance if there was a previous posting regarding this)
    I am creating a form for lab tests for referring physicians to fill out.
    for simplicity, I will just use the state, city example.
    >>>>>> QUESTION 1.
    I have dragged/dropped a drop-down menu icon onto the form, gone through the Palette>Object>Field>List Items to compile the list of states (in my real case, a list of lab tests)
    How can I get the second drop down menu to show the corresponding cities based on the "state" selected in the first drop down menu? So that when I choose "California" I have the option in the second drop-down menu to choose from "Los Angeles," "Orange County," "Long Beach," etc
    VERSUS
    if I select "Texas" the list will retrieve "Houston," "Sugarland," "Dallas," etc.
    I read about hardcoding and although I'm not quite sure what that means, I think that is what I will be doing as I will not be referencing outside of my form.
    Also, the items in these menus are long/descriptive in nature, is there a way to refer to the lists in the code without having to type everything out? In my form (instead of "state") I will have lab tests "Test_1" with CPT codes attached, that is the list includes items like:
    93880 - carotid duplex scan, bilateral
    93882 - carotid duplex scan, unilateral
    and in drop-down list 2 I have items like:
    454.0 - varicose vein with ulcer
    454.1 - varicose veins with inflammation
    it would be such a pain to type each out in the code, but if there are no other ways around it, that is fine too.
    >>>>>>> QUESTION 2.
    The referring physician will have the option to email this form to the vascular lab scheduler. To prevent an "accidental" changes, I would like the form to be a "live form" for people to fill out, but upon return, the form to be a static PDF file, that is, the person receiving the email does not have the option to make any changes (purposeful or accidental), is there a way to do this?
    THANK YOU SO MUCH IN ADVANCE!
    again, I apologize for asking for help for what I'm sure is an easy fix. I don't know very much about the coding language, if it is not too much to ask - step-by-step would be helpful.
    I'm using Adobe LiveCycle Designer 8.0.
    Thank you.
    -Viv

    Hi Geo,
    Thank you for the link.
    Sorry, this is very difficult for me to explain not knowing the scripting language, but I will try my best not to confuse you too much.
    I was able to get Thom's example to work, and based on that, I was able to get this hypothetical situation to work:
    < script contentType="application/x-javascript" name="Example2" >var oTestOrdered = {
    12345678912345678: [ ["-"], ["AAA (Endologix)"], ["AAA (GORE)"], ["Aortic Arch"],["other"]],
    56565: [ ["-"], ["Varicose Vein"], ["Venous Insufficiency"], ["Spider Veins"],["Symptomatic Var Veins"]],
    46546: [ ["-"], ["TA biopsy"], ["CEA"], ["amputation"], ["debridement"]]
    function SetTestEntries()
    ICD9_2.clearItems();
    ICD9_2.rawValue = null;
    var aTests = oTestOrdered[xfa.event.change];
    if(aTests && aTests.length)
    for(var i=0;i<aTests.length;i++)
    ICD9_2.addItem(aTests[i][0].toString());
    </ script >
    HOWEVER, I cannot get something like this one to work (the only difference is that I added a "9" to the first option) it seems as though I cannot insert anything beyond 17 consecutive characters (no dashes and underscores are allowed either):
    < script contentType="application/x-javascript" name="Example2" >var oTestOrdered = {
    123456789123456789: [ ["-"], ["AAA (Endologix)"], ["AAA (GORE)"], ["Aortic Arch"],["other"]],
    56565: [ ["-"], ["Varicose Vein"], ["Venous Insufficiency"], ["Spider Veins"],["Symptomatic Var Veins"]],
    46546: [ ["-"], ["TA biopsy"], ["CEA"], ["amputation"], ["debridement"]]
    function SetTestEntries()
    ICD9_2.clearItems();
    ICD9_2.rawValue = null;
    var aTests = oTestOrdered[xfa.event.change];
    if(aTests && aTests.length)
    for(var i=0;i<aTests.length;i++)
    ICD9_2.addItem(aTests[i][0].toString());
    </ script >
    The form I am creating is a Vascular Lab request form, where the test ordered (drop down box 1)has a CPT code to reference the test being ordered (i.e., 93880 - Carotid Duplex Scan, bilateral) and the test has a set of diagnoses (ICD-9 codes) in drop down box 2, associated with that test (i.e., 459.81 - Venous Insufficiency)
    I have found that I do not have a problem with the "diagnoses" but I cannot add the descriptive test select in the first place. That is, the code works fine if I leave it as "93880" but not "93880 - description." I have also run into the problem that I cannot use dashes or underscores, nor can I type more than 17 characters otherwise the code no longer works.
    Is there something I need to add or remove in order to make this work?
    Thank you in advance for your help and patience!
