What is lost during a new itunes sync?

I just purchased a new laptop and I will be syncing it with my iPhone for the first time. I have read and have been prompt by itunes that I will be losing things on my iphone. Can someone tell me what is exactly lost during this sync? Mainly I dont want to be losing my contacts, pictures and text messages as these are most important to me. I dont mind losing apps, and music.

anything that is not in iTunes, will be lost.

  • New iTunes, syncing, and iOS update questions!  Hot mess over here!

I'm in a quandary and need some help. Bare with me if I forgot details.
I moved all music to an external drive and a week later, it died.
I got a new laptop and downloaded iTunes 9.2
I've transfered all my purchased music and applications from the iPhone to my new iTunes.
_*I'm getting ready for the updates and have the following questions:*_
Some applications aren't showing up (ie. Project 365). Why would that be?
An error message pops up when I want to "sync" my applications. Since I transfered my purchases, do I ignore?
Do I need to sync my iPhone to my new iTunes before the iOS update?
If I ignore the warning messages, will the iOS update delete applications?
The iOS update has warnings. What will I lose?
I am currently running an (3 hour!)iPhone backup.
I swear I'm not that computer illiterate, but extraordinaryly cautious since losing everything.

If you did not backup prior to upgrading and the cancel button is showing, do that now. You should always backup before doing an upgrade. If it asks you to sync your apps then do that. Your backup during upgrade will take hours because itunes is sending all your data to Apple instead of just internally inside your computer.

  • Lost my music after iTunes sync

    iPhone 6 - 128gb iOS 8.2
    iTunes 12.1.0.50
    MacPro 2009 - OSX 10.10.2
Yesterday, i plugged in my iPhone to my computer to add some new music that I purchased (though bandcamp, not iTunes, added manually to iTunes after download). My iPhone is setup to backup automatically to iCloud and set to sync automatically when connected. I have "Manually manage music and videos" checked as my music collection is too big to fit on my iPhone and I don't want my entire collection on there anyways. As per usual, I dragged the new albums from my music collection to the iPhone. After that was completed, I left for work, only to notice that I only had the new albums that I just added, plus a few random albums, which mostly look like they were purchased from iTunes. In total, I had 96 tracks of music on my iPhone, when I previously had over 6000. Today, I plugged my iPhone back into my computer, In the iPhone summary page, the indicator bar at the bottom still says have 45gb of music on my iPhone, and when I click on the Music tab under "On My Device" all the songs and playlists are there, not greyed out, with not sync icon beside them or exclamation mark. They look as normal as if there were on my iPhone. When I go to the settings on my iPhone, it indicates that i only have those 96 tracks. I deleted all the music from my iPhone, but I can't sync what iTunes says it already on my iPhone. ***?
I've done some searching online, but I can't find anyone that has had this exact same problem with same setup. I've read about the duplicate song problem, but that doesn't look like the problem. I really don't want to sit here and have to go through my entire music collection again and drag over the albums that I want.

You're not alone - many reports of the same issue - just spread across many threads.  I keep checking in hopeful someone found a solution.

I have an older 20 GB 1st gen. click wheel iPod. I'm wondering if I will have syncing problems upgrading to iTunes 10.2.2. Has anyone done this without problem? Please let me know.

Can I use the new versions of iTunes on an old iPod
Yes. I have iTunes 9.0.x working just fine with an iPod that's a generation older than yours.

  • What's Up With the New iTunes Layout?

Ok, so I have been having problems figuring out this new layout. I used to love browsing through all the various iTunes Essentials albums. But now I can't find where I can browse all of them, only the selected ones they put on the essentials homepage. So what am I missing? Is there some trick to browsing all of the albums or has this been removed? Thanks for the help. And Steve, please don't change iTunes again for awhile, I am too old to keep relearning all this.
    ~Rocky

Yea, I get that but they only have like three sections. New and Newsworthy, and two others they change right now they are Mardi Gras and Old Friends. They used to list like a hundred or more essential albums. I remember seeing stuff like Black Metal Essentials and 60's Protest Essentials. Did they remove many of those albums?

  • What is wrong with the new iTunes?

  • Lost apps after new itunes and iphone upgrade

had my iphone for 4 months now without a problem. unfortunately my old laptop died a couple of months ago. today i got another one and first thing to do was download itunes and back up my iphone. all seemed to go well, itunes was downloaded and installed and iphone was supposedly sync'd and the update was then being applied. unfortunately the iphone then went to apple logo then connect to itunes with no swipe and was no longer visible to my computer. after 10 minutes it finally became visible and said it needed a restore. this went ahead without a problem then it said it needed to sync, at this point another error came uo
i tried again and this time the sync took place but no apps were added. luckily all my photos were saved so it wasnt too bad but i am extremely unhappy that i cannot access my purchased apps and despite store having a record of purchases, it says i have to pay again. will i be charged?

You could pull the hard drive from the old laptop, put it in an enclosure or get a usb connection device for hard drives and copy the apps over from there. If the old hard drive is still functional?
I don't think you are charged to redownload apps either. Try one then check your account to see if you are charged.

  • What is up with this New "itunes plus"

Do I have to pay $1.29 for one darn song!

ITunes 12 is a complete disaster. I can no longer manage podcasts in playlists. There was a time I could control everything with a couple of smart playlists but they are all rendered useless now. Even worse, I cannot manually remove podcasts from a simple playlist. The options available in the "Show" drop-down menu are next to useless as well. My doubts about the value of the iCloud increase every day.
I wish iTunes will go back to the way it was circa version 10.

  • Itunes syncing - what will be lost on iphone

I have to start over with itunes so I want to sync my iphone again. What am I going to lose? I have apps, contacts, music, vidoes, notes, etc

    Welcome to the discussions,
A manual backup will save data and settings to your computer before you have to sync it to the new iTunes library. Here's how to do:
Set up your iTunes account, disable autosync in itunes, connect your phone, right click on it in the device list and choose backup.
This will save data, pictures taken with the phone and settings to itunes. See what's included in this backup here: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1766
Transfer your purchases the same way, choosing "transfer purchases" this time, to copy all apps and bought media from the Store to your computer.
Set up at least one contact and event on your computer to be able the merge your calendars and contacts after your phone got wiped during the first sync.
The rest of the data can be restored from the manual backup you made.

  • HT1386 I have a new computer and when I tried to sync my iPod Touch with the new iTunes, it has lost all of my music and videos from my iPod/old iTunes library: including all but 4 songs of my bought songs, videos and audeobooks!

I have recently updated my computer since my old one broke and therefore had to download a new iTunes. When I came to add my iPod to this new iTunes, I was given no option to transfer the contents of my iPod library to this new iTunes and was forced to try 'sync'; when my old computer was repaired once we lost all of our data so I had to download a new iTunes then, all of my iPod downloads were transferred and I could easily reburn my CDs so I didn't think the wiping of my iPod would be a problem. When I clicked 'sync' it warned me that it would replace the contents of my iPod with the new iTunes library, as I said I didn't think this would be a problembut then it asked if it should transfer my recent iTunes downloads so I said 'yes'. The sync was completed but now I only have 4 downloaded songs and 5 albums which I burned to my new iTunes! I have lost all the music I bought, all the videos I bought and all the audiobooks I bought! (Luckily I still have my apps.) I tried to restore backup but realised that only covers calendars, contacts E.T.C and I checked my iTunes account and that shows all my downloads but I can't see a way to restore them or anything like that!
Please help! I am in despair as you can imagine how much moneys worth I have lost and am losing faith in Apple

Correct. When you update via iTunes all synced media that is not in your iTunes library will be lost.
    As IO said before:
You can redownload most iTunes pruchases by:
Downloading past purchases from the App Store, iBookstore, and iTunes Store
I do not think it included audio books.

I am trying to sync my iphone with a new itunes library.  The iphone is askin for an 'exchange' password.  I don't know what this is or where to find it.

Sounds like you do have an Exchange account setup on your phone. Have a Gmail or Hotmail account? They can both be setup as Exchange accounts. Have a work email account?

I have double ID's for Itunes.  How can I keep all my music and get rid of the ID that I do not want.  It was an issue when I tried to transfer music ..  I contacted Itunes and they BARELY helped me get the music back.  They also would only allow me to chose one ID to replenish the music (wich was lost) to my new device.  So, I chose the ID that showed more music.  I am irritated that I still have 2 ID's and can't really figure out why they both have the same music.   Oldest to newest purchases are shown on both id's.  Also, I am afraid to sync now because they told me it was a one time deal.  When docked my phone to my new computer all of the music is shown on my computer now.  However not on my I phone.

I had the same problem. I solved by (I use Windows7, should be same for OSX):
    1. copying the library from the older computer to the new computer, at the usual itunes media location.
    2. on new computer's itunes preference (advance), uncheck the box "Copy files to iTunes media folder when adding to library"
    3. open up this folder of media copied over from old computer, just drag over to itunes library, cursor will turn into plus sign.
    4. since you unchecked the box for "Copy files to iTunes media folder when adding to library", you are in effect only growring the new computer's itunes library's database. Your media files are already under the folder on the new computer.
Now when you connect iphone to this new computer and tells you it wants to erase your iphone's library in order to sync with this one, go ahead, click yes. Why is this ok now? Because you've copied all your files over to the new computer. So when you sync again, your existing files are there on the new computer.
You should export play lists on the older computer to be imported on the new computer though.
