Practical note:
It is possible to install OS X 10.5 on a Mac with half the speed, RAM and disk space that Apple stipulate but below 500 MHZ and 1 GB of RAM performance will be considerably impaired. I have used OS X 10.5 on a 733 MHz G4+ with 1.5 GB of RAM for several years and I am very happy with it. My standard install information follows:
Backup first
It is always best to have a full bootable backup before you upgrade. If you fail to do this you will be unable to return to this OS if you decide you don't like the new OS. Also there is a slight chance that an install could lose everything on the Mac. The backup must be to an external hard disk. Preferably use Carbon Copy Cloner to make a bootable backup of the whole disk.
Erase before the install
Once you have a bootable backup on an external disk it is best to erase the internal disk with the new installer DVD before you install.
During the install
Preferably do not import any data or preferences from earlier OSs during the install process as this can reintroduce bugs.

Those wishing to upgrade to Leopard should be aware that install disks can be expensive unless you contact Apple. Upgrade beyond Leopard
OSs beyond OS X 10.5.8 require an Intel processor. If in doubt check this: Click the apple at the top left of your screen and select 'About this Mac'. This will give you your OS number. Then click 'More Info' to see which processor you have. If it says PowerPC you cannot upgrade to Snow Leopard and above. Installing Mac OS X v10.5 Leopard on HP Pavilion dv6000... Can I?

I would like to know if Mac OS X v10.5 Leopard would wwork on an HP Pavilion dv6000 laptop. I thought Windows Vista would be great, but boy was I wrong! I've used Mac operating systems on my friends computers and like them alot so i was wanting to make the switch to Mac, but I wasn't for sure if I could put Mac OS's on and HP computer. It would help me alot if anyone gives me the answer. Thank You.

You cannot download Leopard. You must purchase it on eBay, Amazon.com, or do a Google search.
Alternatively, you can upgrade to Snow Leopard - $29.00 USD - that can be purchased from any Apple retailer.

I just bought this iBookG4 with OS v10.4 Tiger. May I know if it is possible to upgrade to OS v10.5 Leopard? I have a Macbook Pro with OS Leopard, so could I use the same disc to install the OS Leopard onto my iBookG4?

You may not use the Leopard disc that came with your MB Pro, for several reasons. One, it is a violation of the Apple license, which allows an OS to be installed on one computer at a time. Two, the disc that came with your MB Pro is specific to that disc, and will not have the necessary drivers to run the G4--so even if you decided it was worth violating your license, you wouldn't have any luck trying.
It is possible to run Leopard on many G4s if they meet the system requirements:

Installing Mac OS X v10.5 Leopard on an eMac problems

I'm trying to install Mac OS X 10.5 on an eMac. When I first bought the Mac Box Set, it said the Leopard disc was damaged so I called up Apple and got a replacement. Now when I try to install it says:
"The Installer could not validate the contents of the 'BaseSystem' package."
BTW, I'm installing on a 500 GB Western Digital External FireWire HD, as my internal hard drive died. How can I get the installation to work?

64 Bit & Mac OS X v10.5 Leopard

I know about the hype of 10.6 and all, but... Apple promised 64 Bit versions of their programs already for Leopard! Where are they? Where is the 64 Bit finder? Now they come up with 10.6, finally 64 Bit, but only for Intel Mac.
Where is the 64 Bit system for my PPC, which should have been available years ago, according to the promisses from Apple?
I am quite disappointed.

The G5 was never the sole processor across all of the Apple computer products, so they weren't likely to make an OS which would exclude most of their +currently used+ hardware. With something like half of Apples systems sold being latops, and those never having a G5, I don't think they wanted to obsolete them so early. The advent of 64 bit computing was barely beginning anywhere near the consumer level when the G5 was released, and getting a faster processor into laptops was critical for Apple, as well as getting CPUs that were going to be 64 bit. Both solutions came in the form of the Intel chip. This meant that migration to Intel had to come first, then transition to a fully 64 bit OS. When the Mac Pro was released in 2006 the current model lineup was then completely ready for a transition to 64 bit, but do you really think Apple wanted to drop a bunch of computers anywhere from 3 years to 3 months old out of current support?
When you bought your PowerMac G5, if you bought it new, Apple had already announced the transition to Intel. Were you not aware of this when you purchased your system? If you were aware of the G5 as the first 64 bit CPU in a Mac, I don't know why you wouldn't have kept abreast of all the other major trends at Apple.
Mac OS X has supported 64 bit applications since Tiger. The applications which need the support the most (as implied above) are the more powerful and complex type - like 3d modeling, video rendering, animation, large image editing, and very large database management. A 64 bit Finder will at best have an imperceptible difference in function versus a 32 bit. Which is really more important?

You can, except your computer (G5) won't run Snow Leopard (requires Intel Mac).
For Leopard, try calling Apple Support (not Sales). It used to be that when Leopard first came out you could still get Tiger through Support, not Sales. Maybe the same applies to Leopard.
Also, I see that some are having problems with Leopard. Have these been ironed out?
