What is MacBook Pro sleep shortcut before closing lid?

Using Lion on MacBook Pro.  I'm told that before closing lid, I'm to put desktop to sleep to prevent corrupting files and applications (which I've had happen in the past).  Instead of using the black apple version, there is a key-stroke or swipe shortcut for putting it to sleep.  What is it?

Sorry but that is completely incorrect. Sleep is Sleep no motter how you get there. If putting the computer to sleep by closing the lid caused the problems you had then using the keyboard shortcut to put it to sleep will do the same thing.
There is NO difference in how you put it to sleep.
Your problem was caused by Forcing it into Sleep Mode before it was finished doing what you had asked it to do. Using the keyboard to force sleep will cause the same problems.
Good Luck.

  • Late 2008 MacBook Pro shuts down while closing lid

…or it did while I could still get it to boot up—which is no longer the case.
It started a couple of days ago with me putting it to sleep by closing the lid. Or it should have gone to sleep, but instead it came to a screetching halt before the lid was all the way down, with about an inch or two to go. And by screetching halt I mean screetching halt… imagine if you had the battery out and it was only runnning off the cable and you pulled the cable out. That's the kind of shut down I'm talking about here.
After this it booted up fine and worked flawlessly for the remainder of the afternoon. Later that evening after bringing it home from work I continued to use it without incident until the battery low warning popped up. I shut it and the same thing happened. Only this time, once it was charged it didn't boot. I tried several things:
    - Starting up with only the power cable / battery
    - Unplugging the power cable and removing the battery, then putting it back in and connecting the cable
    - Switching the RAM chips around
    - Resetting the SMC by following Apple's instructions (http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3964)
Nothing worked. I disconected it from power and left it with the battery out overnight. The next morning I opened it and tried starting up with the battery, then the cable, then both. Nothing. I then slowly moved the screen back and forth while repeatedly pressing the power button until at one point I heard the familiar sounds of startup before they were snuffed out by another abrupt halt. I then moved the screen very slowly in the opposite direction while continuing to repeatedly press the power button and finally got my Mac to boot up! Relief. I was able to clone the drive using SuperDuper!. I continued using my computer for another day and a half, without changing the angle of the screen, until I had to bring it to work.
Sadly, I was unable to repeat my "trick" and my MacBook Pro remains dead. This looks like a short circuit problem to me, but I'm wondering if anyone has any input or ideas I could try. Since I have no warranty on it anymore I was wondering if there would be something I could take a look at inside. An Apple tech did once say there was a screw inside causing a short but he "fixed" it. This was an unrelated event, and it was a couple of years ago.
A new computer is out of the question for me right now. What are my options? Would Apple charge me for a diagnosis?
    Thank you,
    Bern

You're right, but it's only a partial diagnosis. I don't know what's actually causing the short. My question about Apple charging for a diagnosis was more related to that. Knowing if the logic board would have to be replaced or just a cable… big difference in cost I would imagine.
I'm in Switzerland but I'll give them a call. Thanks.

  • Ever since I updated my Macbook Pro, the shortcuts on the F1-F12 keys no longer work as they did before.

Ever since I updated my Macbook Pro, the shortcuts on the F1-F12 keys no longer work. I used to press just the F12 key and I would be able to raise the volume, now it switches to the home page. I want the old shortcuts back and I don't know how to do that. Please help.

Ever since I updated my Macbook Pro
    updated from what to what?
Suggest you try a NVRAM / PRAM reset, as described by Apple:
    Shut down your Mac.
Locate the following keys on the keyboard: Command (⌘), Option, P, and R. You will need to hold these keys down simultaneously in step 4.
    Turn on the computer.
Press and hold the Command-Option-P-R keys before the gray screen appears.
Hold the keys down until the computer restarts and you hear the startup sound for the second time.
    Release the keys.

  • Macbook pro sleep light stays and won't charge or start up

Closed my macbook pro 2011 model before work today (it had barely any battery power left) and came home to a problem. The sleep indicator was on but very was dim and my charger would not work. I noticed that the green light would come on but very faintly and my computer would not start up either. I am curious to what may have caused this problem.

Also the battery level indicator would not work.

If you have more than one user account, these instructions must be carried out as an administrator.
Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the icon grid.
    Step 1
Make sure the title of the Console window is All Messages. If it isn't, select All Messages from the SYSTEM LOG QUERIES menu on the left. If you don't see that menu, select
    View ▹ Show Log List
    from the menu bar.
Enter "BOOT_TIME" (without the quotes) in the search box. Note the timestamps of those log messages, which refer to the times when the system was booted. Now clear the search box and scroll back in the log to the last boot time after  you had the problem. Select the messages logged before the boot, while the system was unresponsive or was failing to shut down. Copy them to the Clipboard (command-C). Paste into a reply to this message (command-V). Please include the BOOT_TIME message at the end of the log extract.
If there are runs of repeated messages, post only one example of each. Don’t post many repetitions of the same message.
When posting a log extract, be selective. In most cases, a few dozen lines are more than enough.
Please do not indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.
Important: Some private information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Anonymize before posting.
    Step 2
Still in Console, look under System Diagnostic Reports for crash or panic logs, and post the entire contents of the most recent one, if any. In the interest of privacy, I suggest you edit out the “Anonymous UUID,” a long string of letters, numbers, and dashes in the header of the report, if present (it may not be.) Please don’t post shutdownStall, spin, or hang logs — they're very long and not helpful.

  • I bought my MacBook Pro in July before the Lion OS was released.   Would you recommend getting Lion?

I bought my MacBook Pro in July before the Lion OS was released.   Should I update to the Lion OS?

Not based on anyone's advice here.  Only you know what you're doing with your Mac, what software you're using, what features are important to you, etc.  Review the features offered by Lion and check compatibility of all your apps (PowerPC apps won't work at all in Lion, for example).  Check your hardware...  Lion needs a lot more RAM than SL, so I wouldn't install it on any machine with less than 4 GB of RAM, and I personally upgraded from 4 GB to 8 GB due to RAM-related performance problems with some of my "heavier" apps (Aperture, Photoshop Elements, some games, etc).
If you ultimately decide to take the plunge, be sure to make a minimum of two good backups, on separate media, beforehand.

  • MacBook Pro Sleep/Wake from sleep problem

As of today I have been experiencing a strange problem with my MBP. I can't wake my MBP when I open the screen although the machine is running. I also realized that I can't put it to sleep mode when I select it from the menu. Also, strangely, when I close the display to put it in sleep mode, the light stays on, instead of blinking. I already reset the power manager and the parameter RAM. I also have all my software updated. Any help would be appreciated.

I searched for Macbook Pro sleep issues since I am having one with my brand new 2.4 MBP.
I adjusted the sleep mode so it doesn't "safe sleep" because that took far too long for my needs. Before and after doing so, however, after the computer goes to sleep (pulsing light), I have taken it out of its bag and noticed the Apple lit up and it making noise. It wakes when I open the lid again but I am concerned it never slept soundly.
I have Bluetooth wake from sleep OFF so that's not the issue.
Has anyone else had concerns that their MBP is not sleeping soundly? I don't want to damage this computer, but I cart it back and forth to work every day i my backpack, and I need to be comfortable that it's parked and asleep during transit.

If i buy a macbook pro 2 months before the new operating system comes is released, can i get it for free?

Generally once Apple gives the official release date, then Macs have become available for up to date pricing.  As long as just the season has been stated, there is no guarantee that Macs purchased during the season in question will get up to date pricing.  So watch http://www.apple.com/osx/uptodate/ or http://www.apple.com/macosx/uptodate/ the day that the release date is announced.   Past performance is no guarantee of future returns.  Thankfully since 10.7's release Apple's full fledged releases have only been $20 USD, and updates are free to the full fledged release.  I.e. 10.7.1 to 10.7.5 are updates to 10.7.
10.8.1 to 10.8.4 are updates to 10.8.  It was only with 10.6 and earlier the distribution for each full release was at least $99 and up to date were around $20 going back to 10.2.  10.6 is though available on the Apple Store for only $20.

  • MacBook Pro logs out before Time Capsule has finished backing up

  • MacBook Pro sleeping issues

    Here's the scoop:
My MacBook Pro (late-2007) randomly goes into sleep mode. It would go to sleep, wake up, go to sleep, wake up, go to sleep...etc. It would do this for about 4-5 times before it just sleeps and doesn't wake back up.
But there's the twist. This only happens when my MacBook Pro is connected to my external display (a Dell) with the lid is closed AND when the MBP is running off of the battery. The only way to wake up my computer would be to open the lid (as neither my Apple wired keyboard or Bluetooth mouse can wake it back up), but then that would be terribly inefficient and render my external display useless. Everything does run fine when the magsafe is plugged in, or if I'm running off of the batter with the lid open.
I have tried to reset the SMC twice with no success. Actually, after my second reset, I was able to use my MBP connected to my display, lid closed, and without magsafe connected. However when I stepped away from my computer, it went to sleep and wouldn't wake up. It is worth mentioning that I changed my battery a week ago but have tried using my old battery again to eliminate a bad battery issue to no avail.
This post is really just a stab in the dark as I'm trying to find solutions before my Genius appointment on Thursday. I hope someone can help.

Does the problem occur when the AC adaptor is connected? If not open Energy Saver preferences and set them to mimic in Battery mode what they are in Adaptor mode. By default these two modes are quite different. Furthermore, the OS will turn off power or reduce power to external ports to conserve battery power. This would not normally be conducive to having an external monitor, keyboard, and mouse connected.

  • Mid 2010 Macbook Pro sleep and external display problem

I recently upgraded to the new 2010 15 inch core i7 Macbook Pro. The problem i have is that it will not detect an external display (23inch Cinema) after waking from sleep. This happens after using the display to extend the desktop and also when using the Macbook in closed mode.
I've managed to get it to detect the display only after either restarting the Macbook completely or by going into energy saver and switching to dedicated graphics then going back to detect display.
It seems that when on integrated graphics it doesn't register that an external display is connected. If i leave a program open and running that causes the dedicated graphics to kick in then it works ok. If i close all programs, shut the macbook pros lid, computer sleeps and external display shuts off. If i click the mouse to wake with lid closed, apple logo lights, machine starts up few seconds later macbook returns to sleep. If i open the screen the machine wakes as normal but the external monitor doesn't.
Any help is much appreciated as its starting to frustrate me now...
    Many thanks
oh and im running OSX 10.6.3

I thought it was intermittent to begin with until i started looking into it. By leaving programs open, like aperture, before i put the machine to sleep it appears to wake the external monitor up without a problem. If i shut all programs or leave basic things open like safari and mail which don't require the dedicated graphics, then upon wake it wont register an external screen is connected.
Manually detecting displays in settings doesn't work.
Disconnecting and reconnecting mini display port doesn't work.
Turning off power to cinema display and powering back up doesn't work.
To get the display going again its either 1) turn off macbook pro and re-boot or 2) re-start the machine then the display is automatically recognised. Or 3) launch a programme that kicks in dedicated graphics then manually go in and detect displays again..... like magic the display then springs to life.
    No ideas anyone??

  • Magic mouse and Macbook Pro Sleeping issues

Since I upgraded to Lion a few months ago, I've noticed that occasionally my Macbook Pro (early 2010) won't sleep when I close the lid. I think I've narrowed down (at least one of) the cause(s): if I turn off my bluetooth Magic Mouse after the lid is closed, the computer won't sleep. In fact, it will run hotter and hotter with the lid closed and, when I open the computer, it's non responsive, necessitating a hard reboot. I've checked the pmset log and I see the EHC2 (bluetooth mouse) waking the computer immediately after the clamshell sleep. Has anyone else seen this problem (I've seen similar things on the foroum, but not quite the same) and does anyone know what to do about it?

Repair disk permissions. Open this app:
    Applications > Utilities > Disk Utility.app
Ensure your current volume is selected in the left hand column. Click 'First Aid' (if its not already selected), then 'Repair Disk Permissions' at the bottom.
Ignore the various warnings that come up in the 'Details' window, so long you get a message at the end saying 'Permissions repair complete'.
