What is "mach_kernel"?
I found this file named "mach_kernel" at the finder base under Applications and Library and above System, User Information and Users. It is system locked. I will not be trashed unless I type in my computer's password.
Question:
what is mach_kernel?
does it belong somewhere else?
is it foreign and should be gone?
Don't trash it! Normally I think it should be hidden. Without the mach_kernel you'll have an inoperable computer.

What are the proper xattr in Time Machine folder hierarchy?
Hi there,
this is a highly technical question as I am trying to reconnect a corrupt Time Machine volume to its original Macs, one of them running SL, the other Yosemite.
I tried what Pondini advises on his website, including a migration of the network preferences. When first plugging the TM volume, I get this in the Console:
16/01/15 02:32:12 com.apple.backupd[38751] Starting standard backup
16/01/15 02:32:12 com.apple.backupd[38751] Backing up to: /Volumes/TW2/Backups.backupdb
16/01/15 02:32:13 com.apple.backupd[38751] Detected system migration from: /Volumes/Time Machine/Backups.backupdb/snowy/2014-09-16-141637/Macintosh HD
16/01/15 02:33:19 com.apple.backupd[38751] Backup content size: 646.7 GB excluded items size: 444.5 GB for volume Macintosh HD
16/01/15 02:33:19 com.apple.backupd[38751] Starting pre-backup thinning: 242.65 GB requested (including padding), 69.61 GB available
16/01/15 02:33:19 com.apple.backupd[38751] No expired backups exist - deleting oldest backups to make room
16/01/15 02:33:19 com.apple.backupd[38751] Error: backup disk is full - all 0 possible backups were removed, but space is still needed.
16/01/15 02:33:19 com.apple.backupd[38751] Backup Failed: unable to free 242.65 GB needed space
16/01/15 02:33:24 com.apple.backupd[38751] Backup failed with error: Not enough available disk space on the target volume.
I don't understand how it can detect a migration but still can't delete older backups on this drive to make room.
MAC address
So I followed a rather old link on MacOSX Hints to reset the MAC address on the drive, and now I have:

The MAC address in 3c belongs to the Snow Leopard Machine, the 00 one to the Yosemite machine. I know it sounds weird, but it is unclear how TM recognizes its backup drive. I first disabled ACL with fsaclctl (taken from a Leopard install DVD), and it worked, as said by:
sudo /Volumes/TW2/fsaclctl -p /Volumes/TW2
Access control lists are not supported or currently disabled on /Volumes/TW2.
Made sure the hidden file with the MAC address was correct, then re-enabled the ACLs.
ACLs and Xattr
Since the internal HDD had to be replaced, I wrote the com.apple.backupd.SnapshotVolumeUUID with the new HDD UUID in directory "Backups.backupdb/snowy/Latest":
Latest cubytus$ sudo xattr -w com.apple.backupd.SnapshotVolumeUUID 361B184E-E1FF-3860-95E2-XXXXXXXXXXAE "Macintosh HD"
Then went up two levels and checked the xattr:
Backups.backupdb cubytus$ ls -al@

Each computer has the correct addresses and HostUUID, i.e. the current ones.
Yet neither of those give the "Reuse existing backups" shown on Pondini's website, and tmutil on Yosemite doesn't succeed in reconnecting to the backups.
What is the point I am missing?Hey 2cpd2,
I see that you need help with restoring your computer from a Time Machine backup. Here is an article for you that should be able to address this question for you:
OS X Mavericks: Restore items backed up with Time Machine
http://support.apple.com/kb/PH14111
You can also find more information about using Time Machine here:

Premiere pro cc crashes on mountain lion, what to do?
I've been running CS6 perfectly on OSX 10.8.4. but decided to update to a trial CC. That's when all the fuss began.
Trying to play AVCHD material in the browser and it good stuck. Forced quit and then opened again. Then it good stuck in the startingwindow already.
Reinstalled CC, because it might have been the installation. But again failed.
Then used Adobe cleaner tool. But still failed.
Then decided to go back to cs6. But now that one gets stuck too.
Again deinstalled everything with Cleaner tool, and installed my CC trial again. Still gets stuck.
Tried to make a new user without any Adobe on it, but still fails.
What can I do? Because of all this mess I'm a week late on my editing-schedule, which is very frustrating. I might have to go back to FCP, and I don't want to.
Please help me!
Thanks so much.Date/Time: 2013-08-26 18:02:20 +0200

0x7fff85ab5000 - 0x7fff85ad0ff7 libsysteHi Mylenium,
Thanks for your response. I appear to have solved the problem, albeit inconveniently. I found out that the module causing the crash was related to PTC's Desktop Integration. Uninstalling Desktop Integration has solved the crashes. However, this is a bit of a pain as none of the other CC apps were having any problems with PTC's Desktop Integration, only Photoshop, and it would be handy to be able to have it installed. Do you have any idea why that would be? Is this a known issue?
Hopefully anyone else having this problem will find this post here.
Thanks again for your time,

What's wrong with my Java?
Hi all!
While doing a little maintenance under AppleJack, I've noticed for the umpteenth time that a lot (and I mean a lot, like, dozens) of permissions related to Java were repaired. There are literally tons of them, each time I repair permission, whether under a normal user session, in safe mode on with AppleJack in single user. Is there something wrong with SL's version of Java? Have some of you guys noticed the same thing? Is it dangerous? Thanks for trying to help! I do have Onyx installed, but as far as I can remember, I haven't used it once since I installed SL: I installed it out of habit (proved handy on Tiger), but it's just gathering dust on its shelf as we speak...
As for the Terminal query you advised me to run, here's the result (sorry, it's pretty bulky, but I've noticed a difference in the first line between my entry and yours; check the letter after the dash, at the end of the first group of letters):

So, what gives? -
What files can i delete?
i'm a new mac user, so forgive my poor mac vocabulary. I just bought a 12 inch powerbook. when i click the 'Macintosh HD' icon on the desktop, it opens up a window w/ a bunch of icons(i count 27 so far) and i'm pretty sure i don't need about half of them. does anyone know which ones would be okay to trash?
Glad it worked. The only files you can trash are the documents in "User Guide and info", even though you'd only gain a few MB. There might be a folder Applications/Installers/, which contains installation files for additional, trial software like FileMaker Pro. Feel free to delete those one as well.
Unless you know what you're doing, never ever touch the hidden files "cores, dev, etc, mach, mach.sym, mach_kernel, ...". It would be like taking the engine out of your car.
You'll be able to reclaim about 500MB by removing unnecessary localization files. By default, Mac OS X comes with 20+ different languages installed. It's cool to be able to switch everything to Korean within 5 seconds. If, however, you don't have any Asian friends, you might want to use Delocalizer .
Don't forget to mark your question as answered. -
Trying to clone but CCC says "mach_kernel missing"
i am trying to clone my 1 TB boot OS drive in bay 1 to a 4 TB drive in another bay so that i can put this 4 TB drive in bay 1 and use it as my boot drive. i would like to do this in order to have a ton of expansion on my new-used 2012 mac pro.
however CCC is giving m this error.
does anyone know how to solve this while i try and research the CCC faq and other documents?
THANKSlooks like an answer may be here:
(mach_kernel) does not exist. What to do to create a bootable backup? -

What's going on with my USB drive?
I have a WD MyBook 2tb drive, one of several on my Mac Mini running Mountain Lion, and a few days ago that drive started making scritchy-scratchy sounds like it was being worked really hard when nothing at all was accessing it. That the drive access light isn`t flashing while this is going on is all the more puzzling.
So it has to be the OS doing something on it I would think, and doing a lot of it for some reason or another, but I have no clue how to find out what, or why. Okay, so the disk could be failing, and I`ve got it all backed up so if it goes I just go buy another disk, but this disk is less than a year old, and I have a WD 500gb disk that`s nearly 7 years old and it`s still going strong. Then too, I`ve run Disk Utility on it several times and it give the drive a clean bill of health, so WHAT????
I`ve tried using Terminal to find out what`s going on with that disk, but being a total idiot when it comes to Unix I`ve little idea how to look at that particular disk, and try as I might I cannot find anything online anywhere that tells me how.
So far I`ve tried iosnoop, which gets me a lot of seemingly bad messages that scroll endlessly up the screen saying things like:
dtrace: error on enabled probe ID 4 (ID 1031: io:mach_kernel:buf_strategy:start): invalid user access in action #3 at DIF offset 0
and this launchd stuff:
launchd ??/<unknown (NULL v_parent)>/<unknown (NULL v_name)>
This stuff just goes on and on and on and on... forever and never stops.
What does it all mean???? Is the drive dying on me? What if I reformat it? Would this stuff stop?Is this a one-time occurence, or is it continuous?
Does the drive have a separate power source or is it bus powered by the Mini? -
Mach_kernel connecting to ip's and hosts
I am not using a torrent program
but still the mach_kernel is connecting to host addresses and IPs
I am a bit worried about this... I know that if you're using torrent clients
that they cause the mach_kernel to establish connections...
but this is not the case... also it doesn't really happen a lot it is usually
one connection yesterday it was even a connection here in spain to an ONO (internet provider)
user and today to a host : host-61-114.rdsl.intred.it
anybody knows what this is about?
thx a lotis this nothing?
i mean i read about something meaning it could be a trojan software what so ever if it isn't a torrent program running... so yeah.. i was wondering..
i did a scan with rootkit hunter (for OSX) and it didn't find anything suspicious (well something like remote logging in syslog.conf was allowed (that had something to do with airport if i'm not mistaken)
but anybody knows if this is just to ignore? or what... -
What does "General Installation Error" mean?
I was attempting to install Flash Player ver. 11.9.900.117 on a MacBook Pro running Mac OS X v. 10.8.5. The installation fails with the message "General Installation Error." What is the cause of this error and how do I fix it?
I'm not sure if I deleted it or not, but having read several of the messages posted on this thread I did the on-line re-installation of the OS just in case I did unwittingly. After re-installing the OS, I'm now able to install the latest version of Flash Player.
The upshot is don't delete that mach_kernel file!
Mystery solved!
P.S. - Has anyone posted or passed this onto Apple? -
Reappearing mach_kernel in my HD folder.
I keep having an app labeled mach_kernel appearing in my HD folder. If I Trash it, I lose the possibility to launch into Safe Mode and have to reinstall to correct it. I do not know what it is or does or where it should be.
Name: mach_kernel
Kind: Unix Executable File
Size: 8.4 MB
Dates: all on December 17, 2014.
Does any one know what this is?
What is causing it to appear in my HD folder?
Is there a remedy?
Thank you ahead of time.
Allanmach_kernel is the "Guts" of Mac OS X. In Applications -> Utilities -> Activity Monitor it is called 'kernel_task'.
You MUST NOT delete that file if you wish to run Mac OS X on your computer. Follow mende1 advice, and just ignore it for now. Eventually Apple will release an update that hides it again. -
/mach_kernel activity
I have just started using Little Snitch again and its activity log says that:
Mac OS X Kernel /mach_kernel
connected to
175.58.73-86.rev.gaoland.net
This connection was made without my permission. Can anyone let me know what this site is? Do I have a trojan/virus/whatever on my Mac? Where does /mach_kernel reside?
I have run a couple of anti-virus apps but none have said I have been infected with anything.
Thanks for any help.I just had LittleSnitch tell me the same thing. Luckily I could block it before it connected. I did an IP lookup and a little research and I guess it's related to a French telecom company. Other than that I have no clue what it is, so I just denied it forever.
Best of luck. -
Hello everyone,
I just updated my Mountain Lion to 10.8.2, and all of a sudden some mach_kernel has appeared out of nowhere in my Macintosh HD folder. Could anyone please help me in knowing what it is and how I can place it where it belongs?
Thank you.
Nimāi Paṇḍita.I am seeing "mach_kernel" in my system Library folder. I followed the instructions from Barney-1SE to make the file invisible.
copy this command and paste into the Terminal:
sudo chflags hidden /mach_kernel
then hit return. It will ask for you password (and maybe warn you of the dangers of sudo). When you enter your password, you won't see anything displayed on the screen.
However, what I thought was my system password did not work. Is there some underlying administrative password that I need to use instead? If so, how do I find or retrieve or reset this password?
Thanks for helping.
