  • What version of FCP do I need to use an EX1 Camera

    Hi,
I've done a quick search to find out if Version 6 is enough to work with transferring files from an EX1 Camera.
From what I've read so far it looks like I need the latest version 6.0.4.
    Can anyone confirm this?
    Thanks

    Hi,
    welcome to the discussion area.
You need FCP 6.0.2 or higher.
Read this [releasnotes|http://www.apple.com/support/releasenotes/en/FinalCut_Pro_6.0rn> , specifically about 6.0.2 update (scroll down the page).

  • What does registering FCP with Apple do?

If I am selling an old, unused copy of FCP with a unique serial number, how do I license it to my friend if I have already registered it with Apple? Will that make a difference? The License agreement says I can transfer ALL rights to a new person, provided FCP is intact. Can I unregister it with Apple? What does registering with Apple even do?
    thanks

I'm pretty sure all you need to do is call 1-800-myapple... and they can arrange the license transfer.

  • CAPTURED AUDIO 32K & 48K.. WHAT HAPPENS IN FCP?

Capturing analog A/V footage via Sony HVR-M25U which converts to DV, the audio setting on the Sony deck was set to 32K. The sequence settings are standard DV which is 48K. I noticed this ~45 minutes into my first tape capture and changed it to 48K for all other analog captures. Problem... even though several captures are at 48K they appear with the red line and beep, rendering needed. The only sequence that plays correctly is the 32K capture (no red line). All five sequence settings are 48K but the actual 48K captured files need rendering, not the 32K captured file. I can create a new project and import but does anyone know what FCP has done here with the audio? Thanks!

Jim, I can easily render the sequences and resolve this issue. I have checked the sequence settings and see the DV easy setup uses the DVCPRO compression and the audio settings are at 48/16. When I look in the Browser at the column labeled "AUD FORMAT" the captured files are 16 bit integer yet the Sequence setting shows 32 bit Floating Point. I can not find this setting anywhere as the preset shows 48/16. Any further insight? Thanks!

  • Going to Tiger what version of FCP will work best?

I am thinking of finally doing the transision - I have FCP 4.5 HD (and all associated stuff LiveType etc) and DVD SP 2...will these work fine - do I need to upgrade any thing?
    Thanks

I may be going WAAAY out on a limb here, but I've seen on this board a lot of issues with 4.5 and tiger-- it's not so much Tiger as QT7 that seems to be a problem with 4.5. i'd do a search. Don't forget that tiger and fcp5 and PROBABLY QT7 are optimized for 64 bit processing and 4.5 is NOT.

  • What's Best FCP for me?

I still do basic editing - DV and maybe eventually HD, but I want to get as up to date and compatible as I can get without buying a new computer. But as I haven't upgraded anything in a while I realize I'll have to spend some bucks to eliminate some current headaches (slowness in FCP, projects not launching consistently).
I have a Power PC G5 Dual 2 GHz running Tiger 10.4.11. I have Final Cut Pro 4.5 and Quicktime 7.4.5.
If I upgrade my FCP to 6, should I also upgrade my OS to Leopard, and do I have enough of everything to run it (I do have 3.5 GB of DDR SDRAM) Can you buy FCP6 solely or is the only way to get it by buying FCP Studio 2 suite?

    Hi Daniel,
QT 7.4.5 is not ideal when running an old version of FCP like 4.5 (QT 6.5.x might be better).
This can be one of the causes of getting slow performance.
If I upgrade my FCP to 6, should I also upgrade my OS to Leopard?
No, that is not necessary. FCP6 works just fine on Tiger 10.4.11 and 3.5 GB is enough to run FCP6 alone.
Can you buy FCP6 solely or is the only way to get it by buying FCP Studio 2 suite?
Nope, you buy FCPstudio2 including great software like Compressor, DVDstudio, Motion etc. Great deal.
If you are only editing DV you don't necessarily need FCP6, however, sooner or later you will need to upgrade to keep up with technology innovation.
    Your call,
    G.
PS. If you are still learning you could save money and buy FCExpress. A lot cheaper and a good starting point.

  • What formats will FCP import?

I am in a prosecutor's office. We recieve videos from a wide range of sources of which we have no control. I have limited training in handling videos. Most interviews are Video_TS discs. Some are .wmv with IMM4 codecs and some are .avi files. We are a windows dominated area. We frequently have playback issues in court (embarrassing) often times it is a software conflict issue. We need to be able to edit these videos to excluded scenes or dialogue that is bad for the defendant (court ordered). Currently we use several different conversion apps and edit in Pinnicale Studio 11 or 12. The final product is burned to a disc and given to the attorneys and judge.
We also rip the audio track and send it out for third party transcribing.
We want to set up a dedicated machine to handle videos. I don't want to create more compatability issues. We need something dependable and simple.
    Any suggestions?
    Thanks in advance.

I used to be a certified computer farencics specialist back in my IT engineer days, before I decided training and consilting for media production was more enjoyable.  I understand about evidenciary proceedure and al of that.  Thus, I'd stay away from freeware and free open source solutions.  They can be challanged to easily.
Cinematize is about the best app for ripping stuff from DVDs.  Episode by Telestream is the best for handling the widest variety of codecs.  It integrates into FCP X and Compressor 4 nicely.
If you can transcode everything into ProRes 422 on ingest, that'd make editing go faster and easier.
If you can transcode everyting into H.264 on output, that's make playback more reliable and universal.
Feel free to contact me if you have any in depth questions.

  • What version of FCP is referred to as "Production Suite"?

    thanks in advance!!

As I recall, the "Production Suite" included FCP 5.0. When FCP 5.1 was released (the first 'universal' version), the name of the complete package changed to "Final Cut Studio."
The PAID upgrades went something like this:
    FCP 1
    FCP 2
    FCP 3
    FCP 4
    FCP 4.5 (aka FCP HD)
FCP 5 (was also included in the "Production Suite")
FCP 5.1 (only sold as part of Final Cut Studio - aka the "Universal" version)
FCP 6 (only sold in the Final Cut Studio 2 package)
FCP 7 (only sold in the Final Cut Studio 2009 package - aka Final Cut Studio 3)

  • How do I import old FCP projects that have mysteriously changed to Linux Executable files?  Is it as simple as renaming the files with the.fcp extension?

I had some FCP projects on an old G3 tower that I finally want to finish. I was able to grab everything, media, etc. to my macbook pro but all of the Final Cut Pro actual movies/projects have turned into "linux executable files" that FCP X won't import.
I tried googling this issue but didn't really see any good answers. Would it be as simple as renaming the files with the .fcp extension?  I can't recall if my old version (really old) of FCP saves projects as .mov or .fcp files, but I'm assuming I'm not the only person this has happened to.
    Thanks for your help!

I had some FCP projects on an old G3 tower that I finally want to finish.
What version of FCP was this? The project files can probably no longer be opened in the newer version of the OS. You could try adding the .fcp suffix, but I don't think it will help for this. Projects files are .fcp.
Regardless of the version, no legacy FCP projects will import into FCPX.
Media is a different matter. These are probably QuickTime .mov files. If these are appearing as Unix ececutables, they're probably not recoverable either.

  • Can I use my old FCP 3.0 in current up-to-date OS 10.5.6 environment?

Back a few years ago I used FCP a lot but then switched professions and haven't needed it -- or upgraded it -- since. My version is FCP 3.02 full retail store version. Today I tried to open it to do a little tiny real estate project and it said "Need original CD". So I got the Install CD-ROM out, put it in and nothing happened. Decided to re-install the software by removing the old FCP 3.02 and associated files and re-trying the install process -- to no avail. Says I need the original CD. I can't get any more original than the CD that came in the big honkin' box from Apple!! So now what? Does FCP 3.0 just not work on OS 10.5.6? How can I even upgrade to a newer version is I can't get this one to install? Help!!

FCP 3 was the first crossover from os9 to osX. I sincerely doubt you'll be able to run it.
to upgrade to the current version of studio, you don't need to install 3 first, just have the serial number handy.

  • Need help in exporting my FCP project to work on my laptop

I'm taking a long trip and I'd like to export all that's needed to work on my FCP project from my PowerMac G5 to my Powerbook Pro. I could really use some advice on this.
    1. It's most likely that all of my files will not fit on the Powerbook hard drive (half is devoted to Windows). I know there are issues with importing footage to a firewire drive, but what if my footage is already imported? Can I get a tiny firewire external drive and move all my video files to work with? Or will I still be at a risk of dropped frames or other problems? Can I even get a USB drive for this? WD makes a great tiny one. I've got a huge Maxtor firewire drive, but I need one that is portable and doesn't need external power. Any recommendations? Is this just a stupid question and there's no way this is possible?
    2. Will I run into a problem of installing my Final Cut Studio on my Powerbook Pro since it's already installed on my PowerMac? I guess if I absolutely had to, I could uninstall FCP from my Powermac, then install it on my Powerbook, then uninstall it from my powerbook when i'm done with my trip, then reinstall it on my PowerMac. But it'd be much simpler if I could just install it on my Powerbook and leave the already installed version on my PowerMac alone.
I'd love some advice with this. Thanks!

that's needed to work on my FCP project from my
PowerMac G5 to my Powerbook Pro. I could really use
    some advice on this.
First, do you mean Macbook Pro? Also what version of FCP are you running? If you have a Macbook Pro then you must have FCP 5.1 in order for it to run on your notebook.

You are correct in assuming that you need not put your media files on your system drive. Get a small Firewire drive that is bus powered, I recommend on from G-Technologies, maker of the G-Raid.
    2. Will I run into a problem of installing my Final

This depends on what version you are using. I believe that you can have 5.1 installed on both a desktop and notebook with one license. However, be sure to check the license that came with your software just to be sure. If you do not have 5.1 (and you don't have a MBP but instead a Powerbook (not Pro) then you will have to uninstall and reinstall.
Once you have these issues worked out it is a matter of transferring your project files to your new FW drive.

  • FCP X works with MBP 2007

    Hi,
I saw a couple of posts regarding the system requirements for FCP X. I'm working on a MBP mid-2007, the graphics card does have Open CL, but does NOT meet the official system requirements, in that it only has 128MB of VRAM.
Yet, I could download, install and can now run FCP X. I do get the beach ball a bit, but since I only plan to see what the new FCP is all about, that is good enough for me.
Hope this might be useful for some people!!
    Cheers,
    Colin

    Hi John,
thanks, that's certainly a thought, but I'm quite happy with the current system at the moment. As I've said, I only wanted to see what the new FCP was all about. Not much, I must say. Having spent the last 10 years editing for the telly on FCP a lot, I am glad that I started honing my Avid skills again 3 years ago.
Bad move, Apple. I know you should never get "attached" to a company or a product, but when you spend so much time working with a certain tool, it does become very dear to you (and it feeds you and your family). Well, let's see what happens over the next couple of months, but for now, FCPX may both be the future and history at the same time.
    Aw, sorry, got carried away.
    Cheers,
    Colin
