What is .MTS video filetype and how to open?

I have a Sony HX5V Cyber-shot camera that shoots nice video, but how to get it off the camera. I plugged the camera card into my computer and got what i think are the video files but they are named .MTS and Streamclip says it cannot open them.
Any Ideas?
TIA,
Ken

Standards-based is the operative word.  Not standards.  The wonderful thing about 'standards' is that there are so many of them and so many ways to implement them and still be able to claim to be standards-based, giving the appearance of being standard when actually proprietary.
There is actually nothing particularly standard about MTS files, nor AVCHD for that matter.  There is some stability from camera to camera insofar as camcorders branded with the AVCHD logo (thank goodness).  But we have seen lots of examples of "almost but not quite AVCHD" and H.264 in name but not in implementation. This is due to the many optional elements in the so-called standards that manufacturers choose to implement (or not) that have the effect of making their implementations proprietary by any normal definition of the word.
