  • What is macdefender and is it needed for macbook pro

What is Macdefender?  This software tried to download on my computer by itself and during that process said I had viruses on my computer including a trojan.  Is it necessary to have a virus software on my Macbook pro?  Should I be concerned that several viruses were noted and if so, what should I do?  Thanks.

    Judy
Your son is correct sooner or later someone will write a virus for Mac. Let's hope it's later! There is perhaps forms of malware that can get to a Mac, but from what more knowledgable than me said it's not likely if one is careful where their surfing, and the malware would have to be clicked on or downloaded. As I said you can download and intstall ClamXav it's free to use and has been around for a long time. If that's give you peace of mind then by all means do so. Actually I run it. You said you were looking at stock photos? Is that a website? I apologize I'm not familiar with. I know flickr. As for browsers I use Chrome as well, but a knowledgeable member of the forums said it is has security issues according the the site ThreatPost. suggesting Firefox was a better choice. However FF 4 has a huge memory leak affecting the Mac version. But I'm comfortable running Chrome. I'm running the developer verision of Chrome. Hope this helps. Thanks for the info.

  • What dvd format and brand are best for macbooks?

I can't burn dvds from idvd, I have tried dvd-R and dvd+r, I have also tried memorex dvd-R and sony dvd+R.

Isert the disk. Drag the photos you want to burn to the disk. Then drag the disk to the Trash. The Trash icon turns into the burn icon. When the disk is finished it will eject. Insert it back and check your work.
Pick up some books on the Mac from your local bookstore. 1/2 hour of reading will eliminate 50 questions.

  • What kind of memory do I need for Macbook?

    "512MB (2x256MB) of 667MHz DDR2 SDRAM (PC2-5300); supports up to 2GB"
Can I just get any PC2-5300 model memory and install? Or does it have to be a specific brand? Ive seen some PC2-5300 on ebay which was pulled from a PC laptop, is this still compatible?

You have to be sure everything matches.ie., pinout and form factor.
Here is a place to look to get all that info.

Just an FYI.  The Macs named PowerMac date from early 2006 and before.  Use this tip to discover where to post once you get your Mac:
Site map of Communities and Categories
The cheapest Mac available new is a Mac Mini.   It is no bigger than many an external hard drive.  But the screen and keyboard and mouse must be purchased separately.  They support USB and Bluetooth keyboards and mice, and pretty much any DVI, HDMI, or displayport display.   Although the iMac is certainly an attractive option if all you want to deal with is deciding on a printer.   I still recommend getting an Apple USB keyboard for the occasional times you may need to troubleshoot startup issues.  Normally not a problem, but as it gets older some issues can be fixed at startup or diagnosed at startup.

What version of Safari do I need for Gmail? It says my current version (5.1.10) is outdated.

Any, but if you continue to use an unsupported version, many of Gmail’s features will eventually disappear. Lion and newer contain supported versions of Safari; alternatively, you can switch browsers.

  • What kind of wireless card I need for my Power Mac G5 (late 2005) Dual 2 GH

    hi there,
I have for sometime now a "Power Mac G5 (late 2005) Dual 2 GHz PowerPC G5", and recently I have been thinking to get an Airport extreme wireless card with a bluetooth on it, which could work on my machine.
I have already try to deal with apple representatives and Apple sales people to give me a hand on the matter and so far is been a nightmare to approach this guys, tired of wasting time and effort, so that is way I am posting a topic on this section to see if you guys could give a hand on the matter.
All what I would like to know is what kind of wireless card I need for my Power Mac G5 (late 2005) Dual 2 GHz PowerPC G5 (version 10.4.11) and where I could buy one on line to install myself.
This is the mac unit I have.
    Dual 2 GHz PowerPC G5.
    Hardware Overview:
    Machine Name: Power Mac G5
    Machine Model: PowerMac11,2
    CPU Type: PowerPC G5 (1.1)
    Number Of CPUs: 2
    CPU Speed: 2 GHz
L2 Cache (per CPU): 1 MB
    Memory: 4.5 GB
    Bus Speed: 1 GHz
    Boot ROM Version: 5.2.7f1
    Thanks for you time.
    regards

You're welcome. Funny how Apple works isn't it? If it's any consolation, that Airport/Bluetooth card doesn't show up on the Apple U.S. store either. I don't think they ever intended it to be a user installable part, so perhaps that's why they don't offer it for sale. Do you have any Apple Authorized Service providers in your area? I'd think they'd be able to order the card as a replacement part.
Can you give a little more detail or a link to the gadget you're referring to? It sounds like a USB dongle to enable Wi-Fi, but that must be a third party solution, since I don't believe Apple ever offered something like that.

What kind of charger do I need for my macbook core 2 duo 2 ghz. I just bought one used that didn't come with a charger.

There's 8 different models of MacBooks that are 2.0Ghz. To see which model you have go to the Apple in the upper left corner and select About This Mac, then click on More Info (and then System Report if you’re running 10.7 Lion). When System Profiler comes up check the Model Identifier.

what type of modem do i need for time capsule. I can't get it to pick up the net

    Simply bridge the TC..
With DSL you need to either bridge the modem and use PPPoE client which can be difficult to setup.. especially as some modems do not bridge readily..
Or bridge the TC which is simple.. go to the airport utility and select internet page, on v5 utility or network page on v6 utility and select off-bridged mode for the mode of connection.

The update, which failed for you in Mail because you had moved Mail out of the Applications folder, where it needed to be to be found, or it was sitting inside another folder there, changed the version to 4.6 and you are getting that message because it's seeing the "old" version.

I've never heard of any JRF. Post a link to the reference for that term.
There is a JRE that is the Java Runtime Environment - perhaps that is what you are referring to.
If so you need it to run Java. Just search the web for JRE and you will find PLENTY of links about the JRE. Here is one to get you started.
