What is Multicasting?

Grid Version: 11.2
OS : AIX 6.1
I come across articles on RAC on AIX where the term Multicasting is frequently referenced. (For eg: thread like below)
NICs for Private Interconnect redundancy
When I googled it , i found articles like below which hasn't got anything to do with RAC networking at all
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Multicast
Any idea what Multicasting is and how it is related to RAC?

Hi,
IP multicast is a technique for one-to-many communication over an IP infrastructure in a network. It scales to a larger receiver population by not requiring prior knowledge of who or how many receivers there are. Multicast uses network infrastructure efficiently by requiring the source to send a packet only once, even if it needs to be delivered to a large number of receivers. The nodes in the network take care of replicating the packet to reach multiple receivers only when necessary.
The most common transport layer protocol to use multicast addressing is User Datagram Protocol (UDP). By its nature, UDP is not reliable—messages may be lost or delivered out of order. Reliable multicast protocols such as Pragmatic General Multicast (PGM) have been developed to add loss detection and retransmission on top of IP multicast.
The multicast addresses are in the range 224.0.0.0 through 239.255.255.255. The range of addresses between 224.0.0.0 and 224.0.0.255, inclusive, is reserved for the use of routing protocols and other low-level topology discovery or maintenance protocols, such as gateway discovery and group membership reporting. Multicast routers should not forward
any multicast datagram with destination addresses in this range, regardless of its TTL.
http://www.iana.org/assignments/multicast-addresses/multicast-addresses.xml
Oracle Grid Infrastructure 11.2.0.2 introduces a new feature called "Redundant Interconnect Usage", which provides an Oracle internal mechanism to make use of physically redundant network interfaces for the Oracle (private) interconnect.
As part of this new feature, multicast based communication on the private interconnect is utilized to establish communication with peers in the cluster on each startup of the stack on a node.
Once the connection with the peers in the cluster has been established, the communication is switched back to unicast. Per default, the 230.0.1.0 address (port 42424) on the private interconnect network is used for multicasting. Another IP can be enabled using the patch mentioned below, if it is determined that using the 230.0.1.0 IP causes the multicast communication to fail. Multicasting on either of these IPs and the respective port must, however, be enabled and functioning across the network and on each node meant to be part of the cluster. If multicasting is not enabled as required, nodes will fail to join the cluster with the symptoms discussed.

  • Deploymentshare : local or DFS? What is best for performance and failures? And what about multicast in relation to DFS?

    Hi,
    we use MDT 2013 on MS Server 2012 Standard. We deploy LTI's. We have only one (virtual) MDT-server and that has only one deploymentshare. I'm having now a discussion with my colleague about where to put the deploymentshare. He says that we should put it
    on our fileservers (which use DFS) because it's more safe and more dynamic (no idea what he means with that).  But to me it appears quite strange to separate an application and its main folder structure. I have this idea that those two need to be as close
    as possible, like to avoid network problems for instance. It's also a fact that our MDT-server is backed up every night, so if something bad happens we just ask our colleagues to restore the latest snapshot. Can someone explain which option is the better and
    why : local or DFS?
    Second thing which is related to my first question: I've read on this forum about multicast not being possible when the deploymentshare is not local on the server? Am I correct? Anymore info about this issue would be nice too. Awaiting your answers I'll
    keep looking for more clues everywhere.
    thanks,
    Paul

    IN addition to what is mentioned here.
    MDT works great with DFS. However note that MDT is *NOT* supported with Domain DFS, only stand-alone DFS, because Domain DFS implies that the client is joined to a domain when you make the call, and MDT needs to run within WinPE, where there is no domain
    infrastructure.
    Multicast should be on the same machine as your DeploymentShare, wherever that may be. If you have DFS, your deployment share would be the root.
    Another idea is to use DFS to replicate out to your DFS leaf nodes, and each Leaf node would be it's own WDS Server with Multicasting being done from there.

  • Questions about MultiCast Rate

    1. What is MultiCast Rate?
    2. The default is 2 Mbps, isn't it? Is it country dependent?
    3. How to choose among the 1, 2, 5.5, and 11 Mbps options available?
    4. Can the choice affect the interference with other devices?

    1. What is MultiCast Rate?
    The Multicast Rate option sets the threshold throughput level a wireless client must obtain in order to be "accepted" by the base station. The lower this value, theoretically, the greater number of clients that can connect, especially those at greater distances from the base station. At the opposite end, the higher this number, only those wireless clients that can achieve the higher throughput value will be able to connect.
    Every client negotiates bandwidth individually. Regardless of what the multicast rate is set to, the clients are going to be using the highest data rate their connection to the base station is capable of. Therefore the clients close to the base station will be using a high data rate while the clients far from the base station will be using a lower data rate. If the data rate to any client falls below the multicast rate, that connection will be dropped.
    2. The default is 2 Mbps, isn't it? Is it country dependent?
    That would depend on the firmware version that is running on the AirPort. For example, on the simultaneous dual-band AirPort Extreme, this option only provides for Low, Medium, or High settings. It is NOT country dependent.
    3. How to choose among the 1, 2, 5.5, and 11 Mbps options available?
    You would use the AirPort Utility to select the MultiCast Rate from the Wireless Network Options panel.
    4. Can the choice affect the interference with other devices?
    No. This setting is totally different than the radio channel setting. Having two base stations near each other, that are operating on the same channel, will cause Wi-Fi interference between them.

  • IPTV Multicast address range

    Does anybody know what the multicast IP range is for Cisco IPTV?
    I need to setup an access-list to for an RP to be used just for IPTV.

    If a program uses a multicast address starting with 224.n.n.n, the announcement uses the standard sdp announcement address, and all sdp tools and all other IP/TV Content Managers within the TTL limit of the program receive it.
    However, if a program uses an administratively scoped IP multicast address (the range starting at 239.0.0.0), the program announcement uses the highest address of the administratively scoped address range set in your preferences

  • Multicast Rate?

    What is Multicast rate? I don't understand it. What should I set mine on and why?
    Kevin

    Multicast rate is the lowest rate at which the wireless connection will be maintained. If you set the rate higher the range of the network will decrease since you will need to be closer to base station to achieve that rate.

    Hi,
    <i>1)h ow can we delete the integration scenario from integration directry</i>
    First you need to delete all objects under Integration scenario, or just right click on each object under IS click on remove from scenario,after doing all like these , ensure that no object under IS, now ,you can delete IS by right click.
    <i>2)how u attach alert to system</i>
    You have to create the Alert in RWB by Alert configuratio, or in R3 instance tc. ALRTCATDEF to create an Alert.
    <i>3)how can we copy the objects from one name space to another</i>
    Just right click on object and click on copy object and change the source SWCv and namespace
    <i>4)how many namespaces are there ? what is the diffrence</i>
    Not clear..
    5) what is multicast?
    Message sending to multiple receivers and at the same time requesting the response from these multiple receivers..

    I am capturing the screen in the following way
    DataSource = Manager.createDataSource(new MediaLocator("screen://"));
    The format in which I am sending the screen is,

    Can any one suggest a way to reduce the CPU usage

  • Changing the frequency

    How do I change the frequence so that my airport sends out the signal on 5.5 rather than 2.4?

    Ahhhh, I think I see a misunderstanding... setting the multicast rate to 2 Mbps (for example) does NOT limit every client to that bandwidth. What it does is break the connection to a client if 2 Mbps link can not be maintained to that client.
    The AEBS has no settings to limit bandwidth or spread it out among clients. I think that is what you are looking for. Any client can dominate the bandwidth.

  • What is the diffrence between multicasting and broadcasting?

    hi friends
    What is the diffrence between multicasting and broadcasting?
    i'm bit confused in multicasting and broadcasting.

    Broadcasts go everywhere within a range determined by the sender.
    Broadcasting is deprecated and unliikely to go beyond the nearest router.
    Multicasts go everywhere where receivers have declared they are present.
    Multicast can be implemented beyond routers in a WAN which you control but ISP routers generally don't support it.

  • What is Best Practice for Publishing and Subscribing to Multicast Video P2P

    Please, could someone help with an issue I am having in developing a peer to peer video chatting application?  My application uses  multicast to publish and subscribe to video streams of NetGroup members.  I'm listening for the  NetGroup.Neighbor.Connect event, and I'm calling the following function:
    protected function onPeerConnect(event:NetStatusEvent):void{
                    var peerID:String = event.info.peerID;
                    // create user vo here
                    // user Value Object for incoming stream
                    userVO = new User();
                    userVO.peerID = peerID;
                    netGroup.addNeighbor(peerID);
                    receiveStream(userVO);
    protected function receiveStream(userVO:User):void{
                    // init netstream
                    var stream:NetStream = new NetStream(nc,groupspec.groupspecWithAuthorizations());
                    stream.receiveVideo(true);
                    stream.addEventListener(NetStatusEvent.NET_STATUS,netStatus);
                    // init panel
                    // alter to use custom component instead
                    var panel:Panel = new Panel();
                    panel.id = "panel" + panel_seq;
                    panel.title = "Panel" + panel_seq;
                    panel.width=322;
                    panel.height=281;
                    panel.x = 50 * panel_seq + 200;
                    panel.y = 25 * panel_seq + 200;
                    var cpanelContent:Array = new Array();
                    panel.controlBarContent=cpanelContent;
                    panel.controlBarVisible=true;
                    // init video
                    var video:Video = new Video();
                    video.width=320;
                    video.height=240;
                    video.attachNetStream(stream);
                    stream.play("media");
                    // init videoWrapper
                    var videoWrapper:UIComponent = new UIComponent();
                    videoWrapper.id = "wrapper" + panel_seq;
                    videoWrapper.addChild(video);
                    // add to display list
                    addElement(panel);
                    panel.addElement(videoWrapper);
                    // drag and drop panel
                    panel.addEventListener(MouseEvent.MOUSE_DOWN,function(event:MouseEvent):void{
                        panel.startDrag();
                        addElement(panel);
                    panel.addEventListener(MouseEvent.MOUSE_UP,function(event:MouseEvent):void{
                        panel.stopDrag();
                    panel_seq++;// used for unique panel id
                    userVO.panel = panel;// reference to the panel
                    userVO.stream = stream;
                    userVO.video = video;
                    peers.addItem(userVO);
    I am confused on this:
    var stream:NetStream = new NetStream(nc,groupspec.groupspecWithAuthorizations());
    What  should I pass as the second parameter to establish an incoming  NetStream with the publishing peer?  I've seen people put in the farID  but I haven't figured out how to access it.  What is the difference  between event.info.peerID and event.info.neighbor?  And since I'm  multicasting to the group do I need to pass in the groupspec or the  farID?  I would love some clarification on this.
    What is happening is this:
    When  I join the group, and there are two members in the group already, I'll  get three panels with videos.  However, duplicate video streams are  being attached.  When I inspect the peerStreams array I'm seeing a  length of 0, so does that mean that no one is subscribing to my  published netstream?  If so, how do I specifically subscribe to each  published stream in the group?  Sometimes if I step through in debug  mode, I get three separate camera feeds in their prospective panels, but  if I run it will have duplicates.  I thought at first that this was a  referencing error because all of the NetGroup.Neighbor.Connect events  where happening all at the same time and perhaps that is the reason for  the duplicates?
    My only other thought is that maybe I'm  multicasting one guys stream to the whole group, but I'm getting varying  results so I want to know what is the correct way to grab, in sequence,  a NetGroup members' published netstream and be sure that all other  members are subscribing to my NetStream as well?
    Also, I  am using Value Objects to keep track of who my group members are, is  that data shared with the group or is it not accessible to all members?   or should I use another method of keeping track of my group members?
    Please help!  Thank you in advance!

  • Copper multicasting - what is actually going on

    Hi my area is due to be upgraded to FTTP later this year thanks to BDUK. I've just been checking the BT Wholesale checker and over the last 72 odd hours since i last checked COPPER MULTICASTING has appeared to be active on the cabinet. Now i understand FTTC/P multicasting for stuff such as SkySports and the extra Vision channels but what will ADSL multicasting allow me to do or is this for some future unannounced service? At present i have Youview from BT but ovbiously i cant have BT Sport or the extra channels due to lack of infinity.
    Thanks
    Ben

    Don't forget that the BT Wholesale Checker is showing which services are available through BT Wholesale to all ISP's. It is up to individual ISP's whether or not they pay BT Wholesale for particular services and package them up for sale to customers. One such service is TV Connect.
    This article from early 2013 mentioned that as well as the fibre multicast version BT Wholesale were looking at launching an ADSL2+ copper multicast version of TV Connect as well. See paragraph 4.
    http://www.thinkbroadband.com/news/5800-bt-tv-connect-service-to-carry-live-tv-channels-over-wbc-net...
    So I would guess that the Copper Multicast for your line means that, in conjunction with OpenReach, BT Wholesale have made that service available to ISP's in your local area. Whether or not BT Retail pay for it and offer it to customers is another matter.
    As has already been mentioned, a limited number of BT Vision+ box customers have been receiving the live Sky Sports, BT Sport and ESPN channels in just SD over ADSL. I believe it was only done where multicasting had been set up by OpenReach and they certainly had to upgrade their BT Vision+ boxes to the multicast version of the software. Does that mean that BT Retail are already using the TV Connect ADSL multicast service? I don't know the answer to that as BT tend to keep these things close to their chest, but it does seem likely. Of course that wouldn't mean they have to use the same service for any BT Sport solution for BT Youview+ boxes on ADSL lines.
    I receive fibre multicast channels over FTTC Infinity. The results for my line now includes the following.

  • What To Expect With MDT 2013 Multicast from WDS 2008 R2?

    I am having a hard time finding out what to expect when setting this up.  I don't think anyone has posted a demo video showing it in action or even a detailed blog with screenshots.  The only multicast videos I have seen were old ones of WDS multicasting
    that had no reference to MDT.
    What I understand is, once I have working WDS integration with PXE boot, all I need to do is go into properties of the deployment share then select the option to enable multicast support and then update the deployment share.  After that everything is
    supposed to work as long as the network supports multicasting.
    So, how does it work from there?  How do you take advantage of it?
    When I boot up a workstation to deploy to, where do I configure the specific deployment task to use multicasting (or not if I am just imaging a single system)?  When I boot the second and third machine to image, what are the steps to join the ongoing
    multicast? Do you pick the deployment task from the wizard again or does any machine booted to MDT join any in-progress multicast automatically?
    Can you use the wizard to select different optional installed applications for different machines when using a multicast?
    If you are imaging 30 workstations, can you configure it start the multicast when the 30th connection is made or does it start as soon as the first one joins?

    Once multicasting is set in the deployment share it will become the default method of deploying an image for clients connecteing to that deployment point. As far as I'm aware the boot disk does not need to be updated for this to take affect.
    Multicasting in WDS is a rolling session.. It will start as soon as the first client connects and will end when the last machine finishes.  Machines can come and go throughout the session.
    There are more options that can be applied (such as number of machines to wait for) but you need to change registry settings to do this.
    I did have a GUI for this on my to do list.. but never got around to it.  Maybe it's worth another look.

  • What should the multicast rate be set at?

    what should the multicast rate be set at in the wireless options box?
    mine was set at the default of 6 Mbps but could be set higher: 9, 12, 18 & 24Mbps.
    Any care to explain what it does?
    Regards Simon

    That sets the minimum date rate which is valid for a connection. If a connection can't maintain that rate, the connection will drop.
    A side effect of setting it higher is that your usable range will decrease. You will need to be closer to the base station to maintain a higher data rate.
