What is my iBook worth?

I have an ibook g4 purchased in late 2005. I am getting ready to sell it to upgrade to a new macbook pro and was curious what the computer is worth in the ibook are these specs: 1.42 ghz, 512mb ram, 60 gig hard drive, cd-r, cd-rw, dvd-r drive. thanks for any help also email if interested looking to put the computer on ebay or Craig's list

Low End Mac had lists of dealers selling used Macs. You might want to check some of these dealers and also eBay to get a feel of what you might get. These dealers test the units and some offer a 30-day warranty, so you might not get quite what they do.

  • Older iBook worth upgrading?

I have a 800mhz iBook that I bought used from the Apple store just over a year ago.
It fit the needs I had at the time.
I am curious if anyone thinks if it would be worth the money to change out the cd-rom for a super drive?
Or should I just wait to see what the intel version ibooks have to offer?
OR worse yet, buy an older 15" PB off ebay?

Actually that is incorrect. The G4 800 iBook has 2 USB 2.0 ports and 1 Firewire 400, not USB 1.0 ports.
I thought you were referring to this model. Thanks for the clarification.
Or should I wait to see what the new ibooks will go for? If the new ibooks (or what ever they will be called) follow the new mac mini for the video solution I will be very depressed.
That would be "speculation" which is not allowed by the agreement rules of the forum.
Sounds like a good deal with the Powerbook. The one issue I have with the PB is the heat they generate.
$500 for the various upgrades (sounds like a good deal too) is less $$$ than a refurbished 14" - usually around $900 or so. IMO, important the machine you use matches your computing needs.
For me, I'm waiting a year or so until the Intel transition is over. Given Intel's recent announcements, some pretty exciting computers are in the wings, probably 5-6 months or so from now, which may make the current MacIntel's seem like "yesterday's child".

  • Where do I find what Macbook Pro is worth

I've been on apple.com before and it said how much they would buy back the computer for? Anyone know about this? Or where to find it online?

  • What caused the iBook problem?

I'm writing this for my wife, as she's unable to use her iBook for more than a few minutes before it locks up.
I'm serving in the military overseas. My wife and I both use Apple products to chat, email, etc. When I spoke to her yesterday, she was frantic. Her iBook G4 apparently started making a strange noise and then stopped working altogether.
I asked her what she had tried, and she explained that she spent over an hour on the phone with Apple support (I knew AppleCare might come in handy). The first support person she spoke with was, for lack of a better term, an idiot. This was confirmed by the third support person she spoke with. I'll explain later.
The problem was that when she tapped her spacebar to wake up the computer, it didn't wake up completely. She got a grey screen, Apple logo, and that was it. I told her to be patient, that maybe it was reseting after an update (that was before I knew about the 10.4.6 update being available).
    Her computer auto-updates every Monday.
I had her turn off the computer by holding down the power button. I then had her disconnect the power cord and remove the battery. I did this on a hunch (just in case the computer had a heat problem). She reconnected the power cord, pressed the power button, and it was back up and running - for about 5 minutes.
Then the computer began making a not-so-funny noise again, and the spinning-beach-ball-of-death reared it's ugly head and wouldn't go away.
The first support person had her use the install/boot disk that came with the computer. That was Panther. We're using Tiger. Bad idea.
When the boot/install disk did not appear to be working, the first support person had her abort, and she was prompted with little phrases like "are you sure you want to quit, doing so now may damage your files" or something like that.
He just had her keep clicking "OK" and eventually got tired of talking to her and told her the hard drive was bad and that she was SOL.
The second support person was apparently too busy to troubleshoot any further and cut directly to "sorry, you're SOL".
The third support person was a little more helpful in that he talked her through connecting the iBook to her G5 PowerPC iMac to attempt pulling the files over to the iMac (she had already resigned herself to the fact that the iBook hard drive was on it's last leg).
She had asked the first support person about doing this and he said that if the files were corrupt on the iBook, they might corrupt the iMac, and that it was a bad idea. Not a very bright guy, considering the files would be copied to a folder, and wouldn't overwrite the iMac's system files.
She started to transfer files and the iBook froze again. She repeated the steps I had her do earlier, managed to get a CD in the the drive, copied a few folder successfully to the CD, checked the CD to see if the files were there (success!) but then the iBook died before she could get the CD out. She's working on holding down the track pad button while rebooting to see if it'll spit out the CD as I type this.
So, in addition to wanting to know how to resolve the problem, I'd like to know what caused it.
What caused so many people to have alleged hard-drive problems within a day or two of each other?
    Is this Apple's first virus?
Is this the work of a disgruntled Apple employee working in the updates department?
Is this an evil Apple plot to force us to by MacBook Pro's that won't run Virtual PC?
Will running the 10.4.6 hurt or help the situation?
Why is there such inconsistency in Apple support and aren't they supposed to log their trouble-shooting steps performed thus far?
My wife has been using Mac's for over 9 years. I've only been using them for 2 years. Up until now, I've had a lot of confidence in Apple to be a solid platform, even if not the fastest platform. This experience is not inspiring me to purchase another Apple computer.

    SOL?
Her files probably won't fit on a CD; unless she has less then 700Mb.
    1."Is this Apple's first virus?"
    Negative
    2. "Is this the work of a disgruntled Apple employee working in the updates department?"
No, I don't think so. Apple tries these out to try and avoid problems with their updates. Things happen that are not expected. They wouldn't put anything out unless they thought it was ready.
    3. "Is this an evil Apple plot to force us to by MacBook Pro's that won't run Virtual PC?"
First off, look at #1 and think about what platform is notorious for virus problems (Mac has had not had any virus out breaks so far). There have been some "malware/macro" software that was meant to mess with Apple Computers. The most recent that was was over exaggerated was nothing special; MacWorld worked pretty hard to get it to effect their machine. As long as you know what you are downloading and where you are getting it from, you should have no problem.
If you want VPC to work on a MacBook Pro; don't look to Apple. You should talk to Microsoft's Mac Department because Apple announced the Universal Binary switch a long time ago (with developer help) so that software companies could make the switch easier. If anyone is to blame; its Microsoft [they are busy working out their problems with Vista; I am guessing it will be awhile before you see VPC for MBP;) ]
"Will running the 10.4.6 hurt or help the situation?"
My opinion would to just reinstall Mac OS X after backing up the hard drive. That would probably fix your problem. Once OS X is installed; update the software.
"Why is there such inconsistency in Apple support and aren't they supposed to log their trouble-shooting steps performed thus far"
Once in a while Apple's personnel may make human errors. The second one you talked to may have seen her work-up and just reiterated what was said. They have resources we don't, but they can't really go beyond them because they can't see the product, and they are just call support. You may have to send it in.
So in 9 years, you have had this one problem. We can't really tell you what is wrong with the computer because we can't see it ourselves; we can only give suggestions/ideas. Tell them her story, explaining her situation (military etc) and then see if they can help. She may want to bring it into her local Apple Store/Reseller. She can make a reservation on the website or at the store. She can get better feedback in person.
    Just some of my thoughts,

I'm not trying to sell it. Delta Airlines crushed it. I would understand that the plane might sway and might hit the computer, I understand that it might be thrown into the plane, I understand that it might be tossed into the the cart and all that. What I don't understand is how does a well packaged, 60lb, stable-cube-of-a-box with fragile stickers gets thrown off and ran over with the luggage transport? I would think it's their responsibility at that point. Carelessness.
Just need to know how much it's worth. Stripped down with 1GB, no Airport, and no 300GB HD, originally sold for $2,884 back then.
    I estimated $2,500 today.
    What do you think?
Any help would help so so much. Thank you all!

I took in a lot of consideration of what this whole thing caused me to do.
I didn't add that that as soon as I heard it was crushed, me and my partner wasted no time to find a replacement computer for the job we were working on. We ended up buying a Mac Pro and finished the After Effects job using a 1GB stick of RAM (which I dreaded throughout the whole project).
I went ahead and sent a letter to Delta Corporate and asked for about $4,500 in damages and replacement parts. I need two new drives (the work in there is priceless, it has years of design work) and other parts in which costs me more money to replace.
There is a typed up story if anyone wants to take a gander at. It's at http://www.orangeglue.com/delta - I made it with iWeb 08' (it came with the Mac Pro, I wanted to see what the hype was about and man, Apple adds a bunch of code to make a simple site like that function, but it's understood since it's a WYSIWYG) I posted Pictures as well.
Anyways, I'm still working with a 1GB chip and man it *****. I can't wait any longer for the response from Delta, so I'm deciding to buy new RAM now but am having difficulty. I added a new thread for that http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1111785 - With Delta, I'm hoping it get's reimbursed.
    Thanks everyone for your responses!
I'll keep this thread up to let you know on Final Details on what went on with my G5 and the Corporate People of Delta and how they treated this situation.

  • What are the iBooks Author hard/software requirements

My wife is an author of some midlevel fantasy books that are doing well in paperback and eBook so she wants to get them on iBooks but to do so I need to get a Mac for her; I was going to pick up a used Mac but cannot find any info on the hardware requirements. What systems will it work on?  You can check out the books at vjogardner.com.

iBA requires OS X 10.7.2 or later.
See this tech note for hardware requirements for that OS:

  • What is an MDD worth these days?

I'm considering an upgrade, but don't know if it's worth trying to sell my MDD 1.25. I took a quick look on ebay and I see one posted for 450 in a buy it now. Anyone sell or buy one recently? I think I'd be packaging it with the MOTU 2408 audio recording hardware, and it's got 2 hd'S and 2 disc drives.
I suppose this is a subjective issue...what it's worth to me might not be someone else's preference....but still, it would be helpful to hear some opinions.

I've always found this site to be pretty reliable as far as current market prices,
and have sold / traded machines at what they estimate the cost is, minus 15% for every year
the machine has been in use:
    http://www.everymac.com
and according to them this is your current (base) worth of your mac:
    http://www.everymac.com/systems/apple/powermac_g4/stats/powermac_g4_1.25_dp_mdd. html
So in this example, they estimate that if your machine was NEVER used, still in a box,
with all OEM accessories and software, it's worth $675.
    A 3 year running in service machine would be 45% ( 3 x 15%) LESS than $675, or
    $371, a five year running machine would be 75% (5 x 15%) LESS than $675, or
    $169.
Your accessories, if they are new, you could add the cost of them back in.
If they have been in the machine for a year or more, deduct 15% off their retail cost, per yr of operation.
So say you have a five year running 1.25MDD ($169), you added a WDD 320GB HD
    (retail $75-(5x15%)=$0) + a second Optical Pioneer superdrive ($30 -(5 x 15%)=$0)
all bought from newegg.com, then you'd sell it for $169.
Now, same scenario, but you just bought the optical drive
( less than a year old, with receipt of purchase)
and you just bought the WDD 320GB HD
( less than a year old, with reciept of purchase),
    then you could charge ($169+$75+$30=)$275.
Keep in mind, when a person is buying a used computer, its like buying a used car:
Their goal is to buy a machine in the hopes that all the major "kinks" have been
worked out, and if not, buy it at close to FMV ( Fair Market Value) so as not
to get "buyers remorse" when the first major repair comes along.
If you've done the majors (replaced an OEM boot Drive, and OEM optical drive,
the PSU /Cooling Fan exchange) it goes a long way in your favor and asking price.

  • What´s the parts worth?

    Hey guys,
I have a macbook pro that recently broke down. It´s the next-to newest model, 5 yrs used, and now missing a functioning screen and also a hard-drive
Any idea what the spare parts can be worth? I guess I can sell the battery and the powercord but apart from that, is anything, well, of any use?

Once upon a time I could open an attachment from my email with iBook.. Now I no longer have that option.. What happened? I want it back!!

  • What if my ibook never sleeps?

I have a Samsung Syncmaster monitor connected to my ibook, which is open (not in clamshell mode). Lately the monitor refuses to come back on when my ibook has been sleeping for more than a few minutes. It takes a random amount of fidgeting to get the monitor to come back on, and more fidgeting to get the screen resolution working correctly (plug/unplug monitor, detect displays, restart, etc.) This problem seems to have started after I moved to a new house and hooked everything back up again, although I can't figure out anything I've done differently.
My ibook is plugged in 24/7. I have the screensaver set to come on after 15 minutes. What's the downside of never letting it go to sleep? I live in fear that one day I won't be able to get the monitor working.

  • USB audio hardware: what works with iBook 366 clam and OSX 2.8?

I just bought a Behringer UAC202 USB audio interface. My iBook will recognize that it is attached and will give me audio 'out' settings, but it will not configure any audio 'in' settings. It works fine on my iBook G4 with OSX 4.11 however.
Is this a Behringer problem? Do I need to use OSX Panther on the old iBook? Is there a problem with the old clamshell's as far as USB audio in?
Anyone know a cheap USB audio hardware that works in this case? I want to dedicate this great old machine to some easy audio useage.... using the Polar RAM looper instrument in Digital Performer..... and nothing else..... I'm not recording audio to my hard drive..... just want to get audio in and out of the iBook to and from Digital Performer.
    Thanks!

Driver support in Panther is pretty limited with regards to newer hardware as far as i've experienced. If there isn't any drivers offered, either by the company or via third party, then you may be stuck.
The only way that i get audio in on my Blueberry iBook is with the Apple iMic that i picked up at an Apple Store a few years ago. It works fine under panther, tiger and leopard.
    Good Luck

  • What's my iMac worth?

Hey, hopefully i'm not breaking any rules posing this type of message
I'm looking at buying a new iMac and want to sell my current one but not sure what to ask for it. Its 20" Intel-based White iMac, Dual Core 2.17ghz, 2gb RAM, 128mb ATI graphics card. (Just under 2.5yrs old)
Anyone got any thoughts on what I should ask for it?
I'm in Australia so $AUD is preferable. I was thing $600 or $700??

You can search eBay for completed auctions of similar models.
I'd say you could probably get more. Gainsaver sells that model for about $700
    [Same model at Gainsaver.com|http://www.gainsaver.com/Catalog/Detail.aspx?&CCode=1015^Apple&CC ode=1024^iMacs&PageIndex=0&PageMax=40&cICode=62154]
but you have to add a lot of options to make it spec'ed like your iMac, although you will probably not get as much as a vendor (for the same specs) who provides a limited warranty. If it's in good shape, you may find buyers who desire it because it is the last iMac that does not have the glass-covered display (glossy versus matte), and it is the first with Core 2 Duo (64-bit), so it will be well-supported with Snow Leopard once that gets released in a few weeks.

  • What is my ibook model number

i need to know my model number for my ibook g4, 12', 800mhz, 128mb bought in mid 2004....plz help!!
    Kindest Regards
    Garrett

    Hi Garrett,
    Welcome to the Discussions.
Go to this site and enter your serial number. The model number will be on the info page. Just add LL/A to the end of it.
To find the serial number go to the Apple menu and click on About This Mac and then click on More Info. The number will be on the first page that opens. You can copy and paste it from there.
