What is my machine doing?

Can anybody please let me know if there is a reasonably easy to monitor what my machine is doing at any particular point in time? With Windows, pressing 'ctrl-alt-del' enables you to see what programs and/or processes are running and what CPU they are using up. Since upgrading to Snow Leopard, my machine is chugging away doing something, judging from the noise coming out of the processors, even when I have no programs open.

What is Time-Machine doing with all that space?!!!

When I installed Leopard, I had about 750 GB of data on internal hard drives.
I set up Time-Machine to back-up to a 1.5 TB external hard drive.
I was certain that this was enough space to keep the program happy for a very long time.
But now, only two days later, time machine has left only 50 GB remaining on that external drive, and that number is decreasing rapidly.
So where did all the space go?
(BTW... I have not been manipulating or deleting any massive files since I initiated T.M.)
(BTW Again... for anyone who cares, I strongly suggest you look for a QUIET external drive for time machine, since it runs CONSTANTLY!!)

Mac FixIt has some advice on this problem:
"Time Machine slowness, fix Extremely large or frequently updated files (or worse, files that fall into both categories) can cause Time Machine spike in processor usage, resulting in slowness for other applications or the system in general. The simple solution is to exclude these files from Time Machine's backup routine. You can do this by navigating to the "Time Machine" pane of System Preferences, then clicking the "Options" button. This will bring up a "Do not back up:' dialog box. You can then click the small "+" button and choose folders or files you don't want Time Machine Backup.
Common culprits include:
Virtual Machine hard drive files, including those generated by Parallels and VMWare Fusion. Exclude these immediately.
Databases that are persistently accessed by some applications. For instance, Microsoft Entourage keeps a huge database file for mailboxes that is updated frequently."
I would assume that this would also result in bigger backups.
Sounds like you have another problem if you Time Machine drive runs constantly as you say. It should only do that on initial backup.

Could that read " . . . could not access . . ."? If so, try repairing your backups, per #A5 in Time Machine - Troubleshooting.
If not, or if that doesn't help, see #A1 there. Use the TM Buddy widget it details to copy and post the messages here.

What is Time Machine actually doing?

During Time Machine backups, I always get curious as to what Time Machine is actually doing.
For example, towards the end of a backup, TM is "Cleaning up...". What does that mean? I didn't realise TM made a mess to begin with. And also, when I click "Stop Backing Up" whilst TM is cleaning up, the backup finishes a lot quicker, yet is considered a successful backup. Makes me think that "Cleaning up..." is an unnecessary part of the whole process.
Additionally, there is also this "Finalising backup..." message. What does that even mean? Once your finished cleaning up, surely there's nothing more to be done?
Just curious as to whether or not anybody has figured out what TM is actually doing.

Hi, and welcome to the forums.
The main things are converting the "in.Progress" package into an actual backup folder; deleting "expired" backups, if necessary; and finishing up the (hidden) log in each backup folder, updating the status, date of last backup, in various places.
If you cancel while it's deleting expired backups, it just skips that step, as it will get them the next time, so yes, that's considered a successful backup.

I have a 2013 macpro I upgraded to yosemite. Now I find time machine does not work, nor my old back up using a click free wireless back up. What is the status of time machine and yosemite?

These instructions must be carried out as an administrator. If you have only one user account, you are the administrator.
Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad and start typing the name.
The title of the Console window should be All Messages. If it isn't, select
SYSTEM LOG QUERIES ▹ All Messages
from the log list on the left. If you don't see that list, select
View ▹ Show Log List
from the menu bar at the top of the screen.
In the top right corner of the Console window, there's a search box labeled Filter. Initially the words "String Matching" are shown in that box. Enter the word "Starting" (without the quotes.) AFP - Apple Filing Protocol
The Network Attached Storage (NAS) that you are pointing Time Machine at does not have the features needed by Time Machine in order to do its Thing. Time Machine needs some specific features that are not typically available on generic networked storage devices.
There are manufactures that support the Mac OS X HFS+ file system formats and implement all the needed AFP protocol packets necessary so that they can be used with Time Machine, but apparently yours does not.
If you are not using a networked mounted volume for Time Machine, then more information will be needed about your Time Machine setup.

SSL VPN message "This (client) machine does not have the web access privilege."

I am trying to configure the SSL VPN (WebVPN) and I am almost done but when clicking on the URL's I configured in the bookmarks, I get the message "This (client) machine does not have the web access privilege. Please contact your SSLVPN provider for assistance." I looked through the many tutorials and guides in existence and none talks about such error and the fix for it. In fact, if I search the net for this error message I get only one match, in the Cisco website, where is say that "The client computer does not meet the security criteria of having web access functionality through the SSL VPN gateway." and as fix it gave this tip "Check the URL to the gateway or contact the administrator if it persists." So, nothing on the website about what this issue is and how to fix it. I will provide my IOS configuration and hopefully someone will spot the issue. Here it goes:

Time Machine does not see my external HD

I would like to setup TM but it does not see my external HD, but I can see it on desktop in and finder. I can browse it. But time machine does not see it and forces me to use airport time capsule but I don't have it. Help please.

What format is the external drive in?
If it's formatted for Windows (either using the MBR partition table or using FAT/NTFS volumes) then Time Machine cannot back up to this disk.
The disk needs to be formatted as Mac OS X Extended using either the APM or GPT partition tables.
Life is complicated somewhat by the fact that the OS, in general, can read MBR/FAT drives, but they're not suitable for Time Machine (limitations in the disk formats prevent some of Time Machine's features from working).
You can check the current partition map/disk format in Disk Utility.app - just select the disk on the left and the information will be displayed below. If the disk is using MBR and/or FAT then you'd need to reformat the drive in order to use it with Time Machine.

Airport Works on 1 Machine, Does not on Another

I have 2 macs. One of the two will not connect to the net.
Mac Number 1 connects to the net thru a wireless airport expres, everything is fine. Other people who visit, can cnnect as well. The airport is not hidden and there is no password.
Mac Number 2 shows "Airport" turned on. But there is no list of available networks. When I run troubleshooting the airport device shows Amber status on my mac screen. I checked the cable modem, all lights are green. I checked the airport, its one and only status light is green. I don't know if this matters or not, but Mac Number 2 has never been asked to connect wirelessly, it has always had a dedicated hard wire connection, until today. So, its not so much that it won't connect, (it won't) but it canot even "see" the wireless network that I have, and which Mac Number one does see and connect to.
Not at all sure what I need to do, its a puzzle. Does anybody have some insight or expertise to share about this?

PROBLEM SOLVED: Apple Support Specialist found the answer. Good machine picks up signal. Bad machine does not. What is the diference?
A brick chimney between the router and both machines, which are side-by-side. Good machine must be more "sensitive" is all I can guess. Moved Bad machine next to Airport Router, and Voila' - it works.

Time machine does not back up iPhoto in mountain lion ?

My Time Machine does not back up my iPhoto library. When I open Time Machine I get Desktop display going back to installation date.
All other applications respond correctly including Mail, Contacts, etc. My Seagate drive is not involved in the present programme of repair I have been told by Apple. Any ideas?

Thanks again Ivan for the article, it alerted me to otherwise incomprehensible changes in iPhoto/Time Machine operation such as in my case would transfer 3.8GB of data to restore a single photo, while apparently loosing all photos added after that backup time.
However the article says:
When using iPhoto ’11 (version 9.2 or later) and Time Machine with OS X Lion 10.7.2 (or later), iPhoto no longer has the Browse Backups option. This means that instead of restoring specific photos within your iPhoto Library, you must restore your entire iPhoto Library.
This may be practically true but it is technically false.
To restore a single photo in iPhoto '11 with Time Machine it goes something like this:
Start with your Time Machine hard drive and navigate many steps (including showing package contents where necessary) all the way through to the photo/date you want. Drag it to your desktop. (Do not make any edits in Time Machine!) Import to iPhoto. Click on last import in iPhoto. Right click the photo and change the event name, then look for it at the right date in iphoto with the new event name.
Hopefully those with more time and patience can check this out and see what it can do. I had to do it twice with Apple suport senior tech to get it. What a pain compared to iPhoto' 09 but at least now I can restore iPhoto library or a photo if necessary.

Time Machine, does it backup the MacOS too?

I haven't played around with TM.
Does TM work like cloning the entire machine including the OS? So like if I erased the entired HDD and have a TM backup, will it TM bring back the mac OS together will all the personal stuff I have there before I erased and formatted it?

"Time Machine automatically backs up your entire Mac, including system files, applications, accounts, preferences, music, photos, movies, and documents. But what makes Time Machine different from other backup applications is that it not only keeps a spare copy of every file, it remembers how your system looked on any given day—so you can revisit your Mac as it appeared in the past."
However, you cannot boot from a Time Machine backup. You use it to restore your entire system, if necessary.

Time Machine does not show after installing Lion?!

I upgraded to Lion and now my Time Machine does not work. When I connect the disk it starts and then shuts down. It does not show neither on desktop or on Time Machine. Any ideas. I hate the thought of reinstalling Snow Leopard but...

What's shown on the Time Machine Preferences window for Latest Backup? If it shows "Error" in red, see #C2 in Time Machine - Troubleshooting.
If not, a clue may be lurking in your logs. Use the widget in #A1 of Time Machine - Troubleshooting to display the backup messages from your logs. Locate the backup in question, then copy and post all the messages here.
