What is my Sudo Password?

I have just started trying to use my terminal on my mac to change permissions of a file. I am new to Unix. I have used sudo before on linux. When I have tried to execute a command in sudo the terminal has asked for my password. I don't have one…so How to I get one or find the default one. I have no idea?

It is your admin account password.
Before you royally screw up your computer please do not make any changes to file permissions. Make no changes with respect to any system files unless you clearly know what will happen, how to return to the original state, and understand the consequences.
If you have to ask about your sudo password and are new to Unix, then I advise that you leave well enough alone. Post a question about your issue and wait for someone to advise you how to solve your problem.

    What is a default password in the Mac Lion Terminal? I never setup any password on my MacBook Air. Everytime I used command line in TERMINAL (such as sudo....) they always ask for Password.
    Thanks

    Note that after creating an admin password, you can still arrange things so you do not need it to log in at startup.
    To set that up, go to System Preferences > Users & Groups and then click the Login Options item at the bottom of the pane on the left side. In the new screen, select your account name for the item "Automatic login".
    Note - you'll need to unlock that control pane in order to make changes, To do that, click the lock icon in the bottom left of that window.

  • Shell Script Adapter - what kind of sudo privilege needed?

    Hi All,
    I have a requirement in my project where I need to manage unix user provisioning and de-provisioning by using shell scripts in AIX servers. For this purpose, I selected Shellscript adapter as it allows us to execute scripts that run on the resource.
    1. while I have account in the AIX server, I need to know what kind of sudo privilege is needed. Will I need sudo access to root? if yes, does it mean, I (or my account) should be added to root? please let me know.
    2. also, I tried configuring the adapter using the login id, host, password, login shell prompt, port and SSH. When i tried to test the configuration, it gave the following error,
    Test connection failed for resource(s):
    Shell Script: Failed to find 'useradd' in the path '/usr/bin /etc /usr/sbin /usr/ucb /home/eumusr/bin /usr/bin/X11 /sbin . /usr/local/bin' Shell Script: Failed to find 'usermod' in the path '/usr/bin /etc /usr/sbin /usr/ucb /home/eumusr/bin /usr/bin/X11 /sbin . /usr/local/bin' Shell Script: Failed to find 'userdel' in the path '/usr/bin /etc /usr/sbin /usr/ucb /home/eumusr/bin /usr/bin/X11 /sbin . /usr/local/bin' Shell Script: Failed to find 'groupadd' in the path '/usr/bin /etc /usr/sbin /usr/ucb /home/eumusr/bin /usr/bin/X11 /sbin . /usr/local/bin' Shell Script: Failed to find 'groupmod' in the path '/usr/bin /etc /usr/sbin /usr/ucb /home/eumusr/bin /usr/bin/X11 /sbin . /usr/local/bin' Shell Script: Failed to find 'groupdel' in the path '/usr/bin /etc /usr/sbin /usr/ucb /home/eumusr/bin /usr/bin/X11 /sbin . /usr/local/bin'
    I am wondering why should it search for these commands? please let me know.
    thanks.

    Hi All,
    I got this issue resolved after a fine-grained sudo setting to the account that is used for provisioning.
    The revised sudo setting was able to do all the provisioning tasks without having a root access.
    This is what I set on my service account
    (root) /bin/awk, /bin/cat, /bin/cp, /bin/cut, /bin/grep, /bin/login, /bin/mv, /bin/rm, /usr/bin/auths, /usr/bin/cat, /usr/bin/chgroup, /usr/bin/chgrpmem, /usr/bin/chsec, /usr/bin/chsh, /usr/bin/chuser, /usr/bin/cp, /usr/bin/last, /usr/bin/lastlog, /usr/bin/listusers, /usr/bin/logins, /usr/bin/lssec, /usr/bin/mkgroup, /usr/bin/mkuser, /usr/bin/mv, /usr/bin/passwd, /usr/bin/profiles, /usr/bin/pwdadm, /usr/bin/rm, /usr/bin/roles, /usr/sbin/groupadd, /usr/sbin/groupdel, /usr/sbin/groupmod, /usr/sbin/lsgroup, /usr/sbin/lsuser, /usr/sbin/rmgroup, /usr/sbin/rmuser, /usr/sbin/useradd, /usr/sbin/userdel, /usr/sbin/usermod, /usr/sbin/logins
    (root) NOPASSWD: /usr/bin/chgrp, /usr/bin/chmod, /usr/bin/chown, /usr/bin/chpasswd, /usr/bin/cp
    In this way, you need not have to be a root user to perform provisioning using AIX.
    Hope this helps!!
    thanks.

  • Tried to create a SUDO password- can I undo these commands?

    Hi,
    I read that if I created a SUDO password, I could use a root session to finally unlock my system preferences, which were not unlocking no mater how many times I entered my password or rebooted my computer. So I went into terminal and tried to create a password, but it wouldn't let me type one in. Long story short, I ended up with this....
    Last login: Sun Mar 16 12:08:06 on console
    My-Names-MacBook-Pro:~ myappleid$ sudo passwrd root
    WARNING: Improper use of the sudo command could lead to data loss

    Can I undo any of this? Have I totally screwed up my computer, and if so, can I fix it? Also, can I eventually create a sudo password/is there another way I can unlock my systems preferences (I tried robooting several times, and also could not find the file "~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.HIToolbox.plist" to delete)?
    Thanks for your help! Fingers crossed!

    Hi Niel,
    Thanks for your reply. I'm glad to know I didn't mess anything up. I tried what you suggested, but it isn't letting me type anything in for the password. Do you (or anyone else for that matter!) have any suggestions for how I might fix this? Thank you!

  • [SOLVED] alias with sudo: Password request malfunction

    Okay so here are two cool little system-maintenance related aliases, as suggested by "pacman tips" Wiki:
    Show dirs not owned by any package:
    alias pacman-disowned-dirs="comm -23 <(sudo find / \( -path '/dev' -o -path '/sys' -o -path '/run' -o -path '/tmp' -o -path '/mnt' -o -path '/srv' -o -path '/proc' -o -path '/boot' -o -path '/home' -o -path '/root' -o -path '/media' -o -path '/var/lib/pacman' -o -path '/var/cache/pacman' \) -prune -o -type d -print | sed 's/\([^/]\)$/\1\//' | sort -u) <(pacman -Qlq | sort -u)"
    Show files not owned by any package:
    alias pacman-disowned-files="comm -23 <(sudo find / \( -path '/dev' -o -path '/sys' -o -path '/run' -o -path '/tmp' -o -path '/mnt' -o -path '/srv' -o -path '/proc' -o -path '/boot' -o -path '/home' -o -path '/root' -o -path '/media' -o -path '/var/lib/pacman' -o -path '/var/cache/pacman' \) -prune -o -type f -print | sort -u) <(pacman -Qlq | sort -u)"
    typically I edit those into my "/etc/bash.bashrc" instead of "~/.bashrc", but there's no difference there. The thing is, when I invoke this alias,
    as regular user, it promptly requests [sudo] password, as it should, but after a brief moment the console returns to normal, there's no time for to even input the password, like this:
    [danilo@dandelion ~]$ pacman-disowned-dirs
    [sudo] password for danilo:
    [danilo@dandelion ~]$
    PS: If my password is still cached, it will work normally (my timeout is set to 30 min).
    here's my "/etc/bash.bashrc" at any rate:
    # /etc/bash.bashrc
    ## If not running interactively, don't do anything ##
    # [[ $- != *i* ]] && return
    ## Prompt display configurations ##

    You'd suppose it would work, but no, same error... Perhaps it traces back to some other configuration file...
    By the way, the second command, I didn't paste it correctly; There's no "&&" before the pacman query part of the command. Fixing the post now...
    Well, anyways, I believe I got'em working, I appended a useless command that requires elevation AND works properly, like this:
    alias pacman-disowned-dirs="sudo true && comm -23 <(sudo find / \( -path '/dev' -o -path '/sys' -o -path '/run' -o -path '/tmp' -o -path '/mnt' -o -path '/srv' -o -path '/proc' -o -path '/boot' -o -path '/home' -o -path '/root' -o -path '/media' -o -path '/var/lib/pacman' -o -path '/var/cache/pacman' \) -prune -o -type d -print | sed 's/\([^/]\)$/\1\//' | sort -u) <(pacman -Qlq | sort -u)"
    And:
    alias pacman-disowned-files="sudo true && comm -23 <(sudo find / \( -path '/dev' -o -path '/sys' -o -path '/run' -o -path '/tmp' -o -path '/mnt' -o -path '/srv' -o -path '/proc' -o -path '/boot' -o -path '/home' -o -path '/root' -o -path '/media' -o -path '/var/lib/pacman' -o -path '/var/cache/pacman' \) -prune -o -type f -print | sort -u) <(pacman -Qlq | sort -u)"
    ...Still, it's a r@t workaround, not a proper solution, so I'll ask to not mark this as solved yet. Maybe someone can backtrack this properly.
    Thank you, for the quick reply, much appreciated.

  • Pacaur -Syu without having to type the sudo password

    The Arch wiki mentions being able to run `sudo pacman -Syu` without having to type the sudo password, by running `sudo visudo` and adding something like
    USER_NAME HOST_NAME=/usr/bin/pacman -Syu
    However, I tend to run `pacaur -Syu` to update instead. Is it possible to add an entry to visudo to allow running this without having to type the sudo password? I'm the only user of my computer, so (I think) there are minimal security issues with this.
    I've tried changing pacman to pacaur in visudo, but that did not work. (Probably because `sudo pacaur -Syu` isn't the correct command, it tells you ":: you cannot perform this operation as root". You have to run it as `pacaur -Syu`, and are then prompted for the sudo password.)

    Salkay wrote:
    Spider.007 Perfect! That works well. Can you think of any security ramifications for allowing all of pacman instead of just -Syu? FWIW my entry is:
    USER_NAME ALL=(ALL) NOPASSWD: /usr/bin/updatedb,/usr/bin/pacman
    Well, allowing random packages to be installed through pacaur is already pretty bad, I don't think it'll get any worse. You could also check the pacaur source and add all specific calls it makes to pacman to the sudoers file.
