What is on your Pre Installed OS?

Something to think about:
http://www.bbc.com/news/technology-31533028
------------------------------ >>  Computer maker Lenovo has been forced to remove hidden adware that it was shipping on its laptops and PCs after users expressed anger.
The adware - dubbed Superfish - was potentially compromising their security, said experts.
The hidden software was also injecting adverts on to browsers using techniques more akin to malware, they added.
Lenovo faces questions about why and for how long it was pre-installed on machines - and what data was collected.
The company told the BBC in a statement: "Lenovo removed Superfish from the preloads of new consumer systems in January 2015. At the same time Superfish disabled existing Lenovo machines in the market from activating Superfish. << ------------------------------
My machine, a W540 was clean, no Superfish.  But think carefully.  Is it not to someone's advantage to have a permanent boot up to the Internet?  Hence no physical switch.  Before the desktop is fully active, the link is already in dialog mode with external servers.
To view certificates; Instructions:   MS View Certificates Instructions
Due to the lack of a physical WiFi disconnect switch, Adobe zapped my PS and PS CC, and took me 3 days (many hours on line with direct access to my machine connected on a hotel's WiFi) to resolve the issue with Adobe tech support (it was free, and I got a free course in Indian), and Adobe messed up the HiRez screen in the process. The screen problem took 3 weeks to resolve when I got back from a photo field shoot.

To remove a real danger (shame on Lenovo!!)
Run certmgr.msc to start your Certificate Manager
Once that opens, click on “Trusted root certificate authorities” in the left-hand navigation pane, then double-click “Certificates” in the main pane.
A list of all trusted root certificates will appear.
Find the Superfish entry, then right-click on it and select “Delete.”

    Pre-installed with what?
Your best bet is to always format a new hard drive,  so there are no surprises.
If you buy an external HD specifying  ready for Mac ( or some such) it will cost you more for nothing.

  • Jumpstart Pre install scripts in perl...

Perl scripts dont execute for jumpstart pre-install, looks like the perl header is ignored and its executes as shell script. Is it possible to use perl in place of shell scripts?
    Thanks, P.

hmm, its possible that the script is called as
    sh <script>
If so seems to be the case, simply create a shell scripts which calls your perlscript and use the shellscript as your pre-install script.

  • Windows 8.1 pre-installed , your windows license will expire soon?!?!

I just updated my Windows today when they prompted and asked me to update it and restart the laptop. After updating and restarting, the laptop suddenly notifies me that my windows license will expire soon and I will need to activate it in the pcsettings.
It then brings me to a page with two choices, activate windows online or enter new product key. I tried both options but the first one won't work and the second one requires a product key which I have no idea what it is. When I look at my system information, it says that my windows 8.1 is activated.
By the way, my windows 8 is pre-installed on the laptop. Please help, I am a complete newbie in the technology field!

  • My recently purchase iMac came with pre-installed operating software but no backup disks. What happens if I find it necessary to re-install?

Having ditched Windows after years of frustration I recently bought an iMac with Lion pre-installed. While not necessary at this tme there were no installation disks sent with the purchase. What happens should I find it necessary to reinstall the operating system?

No. You do NOT have to buy Lion again.
If you replace your HDD or erase the recovery partion, it will download and install lion from Apple' servers.
    See:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4718
    Quoute:
If you happen to encounter a situation in which you cannot start from the Recovery HD, such as your hard drive stopped responding or you installed a new hard drive without Mac OS X installed, new Mac models introduced after public availability of OS X Lion automatically use the Lion Internet Recovery feature if the Recovery HD (Command-R method above) doesn't work. Lion Internet Recovery lets you start your Mac directly from Apple's Servers. The system runs a quick test of your memory and hard drive to ensure there are no hardware issues.

    Hello donkey,
please also refer to this extensive Thinkpad Superguide.
I would recommend do not uninstall all the programs, especially Thinkvantage.
Pc Doctor is Lenovo´s system checker tool. Leave it.
McAfee should be a trial version, if you don´t have purchased it with your machine. (Antivir, AVG are good and free solutions for private use.
Agilix Gobinder seems a e-learning solution. May you have bought a students version?
Skype should be clear, don´t know if it will be usefull to you.

  • Installing Windows XP on macbook pro - what happens to your mac afterwards?

    Hello,
First time mac user, and I miss windows for it's wide girth of video games, so I am thinking to install windows xp with boot camp assistant.
What happens to your mac afterwards? Does it run as perfectly smooth as before? Does it get slower? Does it develop weird glitches? Will it crash and freeze? If you don't like it, can you restore your computer to how it was before?
And if you download a video game torrent that has a virus even if you scanned it with anti-virus software through windows, and the virus infects your mac, does it only affect the windows partition or does it affect your entire mac?
    Thanks,
    Purplestar

Would formatting the partitions differently (where so the windows partition cannot even see the mac partition) prevent drive erasure?
Not really. Under normal circumstances, neither OS X or Windows would let you erase or format the startup drive, but a lot of effort goes into crafting Windows malware to subvert even its most basic protections. If the malware is sufficiently crafty, it could conceivably attack the low level formatting that defines the partition scheme of the drive, bypassing any attempts to hide a partition.
Note that this would be possible with OS X as well, but malware has to get past the defenses of any OS before it can do anything so fundamental. Both OS X & Windows 7 (if not the earlier versions) get high marks for security. It is just that the risk of this happening is greater with Windows because of the sheer volume & diversity of attacks focused on that OS.
That's why it is so important to have effective, up-to-date anti-virus software when running Windows. It isn't so much that any malware could do this today. The concern is that some clever new type of attack could appear & do this, perhaps as a byproduct of trying to take control of the machine & hide code or data where there would normally be no trace of it.
Thanks peeps! I just got a 500 GB harddrive and I'm trying to figure out how best to partition it as a web designer so I can safely use windows.
As you probably know, Boot Camp Assistant is designed to easily handle the necessary formatting chores to set the drive up for dual booting, & there is no reason not to use it. I'm not by any means an expert on Windows & I don't know how much design work you plan on doing on the Windows side, so I can't really suggest appropriate sizes for the two partitions, other than to emphasize the need to leave enough room on the Windows partition for the anti-virus software.
Also, on a related topic, do not forget that you need to back up at least all your user-created files for both OS's, & that this should be done on an entirely separate drive that can physically be disconnected from your Mac for the best insurance against any misfortune, including but not limited to successful malware attacks.

Among your list I'd get rid of:
Toshiba Power Saver (I keep my Power Plan at Max Performance, its a desktop substitute and I've a tablet)
Toshiba Volume Regulator (I did not find any difference in keeping this or not)
Toshiba HDD SSD Alert (This annoyed me but turned out the drive is fine, and I keep my files backed up)
Message Center (I dont want unsolicited messages)
Toshiba ReelTime (This is the equivalent of "Previous" in Android Honeycomb and ICS, but I dont like it here)
Toshiba Service Station (Helpful with drivers but heard a few laptops bricked by BIOS updates although reports arent proven)
Toshiba App Place (I dont buy apps)
    Services:
    TMachInfo (Who needs this?)
Toshiba Power Saver (I keep my power plan at maximum performance and my battery is out
Toshiba HDD SSD Alert Service (My files are backed up so the HDD may crash whenever he decides
taisregispinger (This has done its job the first time you went online, it reports its first boot to Toshiba)
    Enjoy.

    Thanks guys
    Pat,

I just performed a reinstall of my OS and data on my MBP and this is the procedure I used.
I cloned the MBP using Carbon Copy Cloner to an external HDD.  The clone has all of the data on that external HDD, including all applications and the OS.  In addition it can boot the MBP.
I then used a previously made OS thumb drive and opened Disk Utility>Erase and formatted the internal HDD to Mac OS Extended (Journaled).  You can achieve the same result by accessing the Recovery Partition and use Disk Utility from the four part menu.
I then reinstalled the OS.  You would do the same from the four part menu in the recovery partition.
I then connected the clone to the MBP and transferred my data, including all applications that were not included in the OS reinstallation.  In your case, this would be the iLfe applications as well.
Backups are important if you value your data.
    Ciao.

  • "Your application install seems to be damaged, Please reinstall the application." What do I do?

I have a full Creative Cloud account. Every time I open any application, I get the message: "Your application install seems to be damaged, Please reinstall the application."
I have uninstalled all of the applications including the CC Manager, and reinstalled and the problem persists.
One thing to note may be that I had another problem and someone at Adobe had me delete cache files and some other files. Not sure if that matters but thought I'd mention it. I never had this message before that. But before that, I could not download or update any files.
