  • Print quality / resolution for iPhoto books

    Hi -
I am getting ready to upload my first iPhoto book for printing, and a colleague told me to beware of a potential issue. After searching these forums, and searching Google, I found that people in the past (perhaps prior to iPhoto '08?) have had print quality problems when printing 8.5 x 11 books vs. 6x10 books.
Basically, we are creating an 8.5 x 11 book and will have several books printed by Apple. At some point in the future, we will make similar books at the 6x10 size. Will the photos that are included in the books print at similar quality?
    Thanks -

I have ordered books in the past that were made up of photos 1600 x 1200 pixels in dimension and they came out fine. HOWEVER, I had no pages with a photo filling the entire page as Larry warned about.
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto (iPhoto.Library for iPhoto 5 and earlier) database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've created an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger or later), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. It's compatible with iPhoto 6 and 7 libraries and Tiger and Leopard. iPhoto does not have to be closed to run the application, just idle. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.≤br>
Note: There now an Automator backup application for iPhoto 5 that will work with Tiger or Leopard.

  • Any way to restrict certain monitor resolutions for normal desktop usage?

I have an issue when switching monitors where everything is set to 1024x768 which screws up my desktop and makes me manually adjust it, and I noticed in Screen Resolution (from desktop right-click in Windows 7) multiple resolutions listed but only some are available, and I want to disable some so that the desktop will never switch to that. In fact if I could have all monitors be the maximum resolution all the time (except when a specific program requests it like a video game) that would be perfect.

Thanks for the input everyone.  Through trial and error, I found a few useful tips I will share.
1st, you can disable any of the viewable streams, yet still retain the ability to click on them while doing a live mix.  You don't see the image (duh) but it my case this resolved the issue.
I was doing a mix of 2 stationary cameras and 3 operated cams (recording a band live at a theatre), so I didn't need to preview the stationary cams.  I turned them both off in preview (the tiny eye in the setup sequence) which meant only displaying 3 streams instead of five.  I was able to use full playback resolution with no lag at all.
I also tried enabling 4 cams, which worked while reducing the playback qaulity to 1/8th, and this too seemed to work fine.  It seems im my case, 5+ streams is the limit.
    This was 1920x1080 @ 60 frames.
Also based on my system monitor, RAM and CPU were not in any short supply.  I feel the issue lies in the HD or bus, but have no way to test this.
Anyway, thats it on my end.  Super stoked I can use this feature, it makes life so much easier.
On that same note, in my next computer build, I want a machine capable of handling more streams.  Any suggestions on the best RAID configuration when it comes to multi cam HD?  I am also curious to see if splitting the files onto an external drive(s) and the internal storage would make a difference.  Cheap hack, but if it works........

  • What is the Proper Screen Resolution For a 17" MacBook Pro?

Playing around with display in system preferences I have somehow reset / changed the screen display / resolution.
To what should I set the display?
    Thanks

    Many thanks!
I'm using a friend's computer with which I'm not 100% comfortable. How I got into this trouble was trying to set output to a projector.
Now I have two screens in my system preferences -- one "VGA Display" and the other "Color LCD." The highest setting on the LCD is 1680 x 1050. On the VGA the list goes up to 2304 X 1728. And on the VGA the options include various Hz rates -- 60, 75, 85, 90
I know I'm close. Help me over this last bump!
    Thanks

  • Monitor resolution for OS 8.6

I have a Sony Trinitron multiscan 200 ES and I can not change the resolution will not change from 640 x 480. HELP

Glen is right, it's the adapter.
The adapter from the Mac two-row to the VGA-style three-row connector does two jobs:
    1) It shuffles the signals around so that they line up on the correct pins.
    2) It provides a code on pins 4, 7, and 10 (the SENSE lines) that your Mac reads at startup to determine exactly what kind of genuine Apple display is connected. If you are not using a genuine Apple display, you must have an adapter that sends the right code for the display you are using.
Many of the codes are now really old and only useful if you have a display that is a genuine antique. Two that are still pretty useful are the code for VGA/Super VGA, and the code for MultiSync 21" display.
If you were to use an adapter that did not connect any of the sense lines, that code is reserved for "No display attached". You would get no picture whatsoever.

  • What is the proper screen resolution for my MBA?

Is the default settings on my 2012 MBA the best setting for the screen on the computer?

Since the native resolution of the built-in screen is 1440 x 900, this setting will yeild the best sharpness, as no resizing or interpolation of pixels is needed.

  • What flash drive do you recommend for iPhoto?

I need a nice and strong flash drive to save thousands of pictures from iphoto, which I can view them everywhere and even print them out. What brand do you recommend and how many GB?

Any flash drive will do. They're all the same. They don't come in "strong". How many GB depends on how many photos and what size they are.

  • Capturing Computer Monitor video for use in FCP project.

I'm working on an industrial film for a company that makes websites, and they want to put in video clips of their websites. I'm looking for a good program that will allow me to capture my desktop and make FCP ready videos. It doesn't need to be free, it just needs to do what I need. I'm also looking for the right settings to set for those movies for use in a standard DV NTSC project.

  • What is the maximum display resolution for Adobe Reader X?

    Hello,
I have a multi-projector classroom that projects a 14,000 x 1200 pixel (Windows 7) desktop in a wrap-around manner.   When I load a pdf document with Adobe Reader X, the content will not fill the screen, even when zoomed in.  It appears the max. resolution is around 9-10k width.  Full screen mode does use the entire area but the leftmost ~4000 pixel width is gray.
    Thanks,
    Scott

I'm sorry -- I have not communicated my question well.   When I use full
page mode (no window borders, Ctrl-L) and zoom to many thousands %, then
entire screen (14000 pixels by 1200 pixels) is not used -- only about 9000
pixels x 1200 pixels.   The entire screen should have document content
because I'm extremely zoomed in.  There is no meaning to pixels/inch in
this context (and I tried your suggestion -- it made no difference).   This
seems to be a hard limitation of Adobe Reader X screen display...?
    Thanks,
    Scott

Even though it says 4 GB RAM recommended, I think most experience users woild say 8 GB and up is the real minimum.
    Can't answer the Avid question.

    hi ya, zappie!
i've been going through this same thing in my head in preparation for a mac pro in the spring. plus, one of my vga monitors is nigh on ten years old and needs to be retired.
i've looked into the dell monitors and the sony's and the apple 23 inch models. can't say that i'm overly impressed with any of these and especially the apple displays when reading posts about past and present color cast problems and other imaging issues.
one model i need to demo before i purchase anything is this particular display, http://www.eizo.com/products/graphics/ce240w/index.asp
read some nice reviews on this display and the five year warranty is nice as well.
    cheers!
