What is "other" on iTunes summary.

Hello, On my iTunes summary for my 4gb nano there is something called "other" in orange. All I have for my iTunes on my nano are mp3; not photos except for album artwork. This "other" is taking up space on my ipod. Can someone help me figure out and possibly get rid of "other". Thanks in advance.

Hi Kannek,
Regarding your original problem, have you tried restoring your iPod in iTunes?
Just connect your iPod to your computer, and, under the "Summary" tab where you see your iPod's main preferences/contents, click the "Restore" button.
Restoring deletes all of the contents off of your iPod, but usually fixes over-reported "Other" space problems.
While your iPod's "Other" space might be reasonably taken up by such things like Album artwork, contacts, calendar, notes, etc., if the amount of your iPod's "Other" space seems to be unproportional and incorrect, typically it's just a relatively simple issue with iTunes misreading the details of your iPod. Restoring usually fixes the problem.

  • Other in itunes summary on ipod touch

What is the OTHER category in the ipod touch summary. I have 4 GB of memory used here and do not know what to delete so I can down load an app?

Excessive amounts of "other" can mean that there is some database corruption. You can clear this by restoring your Touch through iTunes.

  • What is "others" in Itunes

Under Itunes, you have a horizontal graph where you can see the volume of data : Music, Apps, Pictures, ....
However I have also a orange part call "OTHERS" that is bigger and bigger without any reason...
Can you help me to find what can be these others??? (about 5Gb for me on my Iphone 4 - 16Gb)
Thank you the community for your help!

    I follow another forum :
My "others" were about 5,1Gb , and now it's 0,9Gb that can be more acceptable
I just erase ALL files inside this folder (I'm using DiskAid) :
    /private/var/mobile/Media/iTunes_Control/Music/
    I had inside many file as F01, F02, ...

  • What is "Other" in iTunes?

I just got an iPhone 5s today i was playing on it all day. When the day was over I synced it to my Mac and it had a yellow bar that said "other". I know this is like caches, browsing histories, etc. but it is taking up 4GB of space. I do use Dropbox, could this have anything to do with it?
    Thanks!

It is just one large single bar saying other? Or are the other types of memory usages still there?
The one large single yellow bar happens to me once or twice. If I sync it to iTunes again it usually returns back to normal

  • In the summary section in iTunes, what is "other" on my iPhone 5 ?

Using iTunes, In the summary section as I review the contents of my iPhone, there is an "other" category and it is taking up over 11GB of memory in my iPhone.  What is in this category? Do I need it?  If not, how do I reduce or remove it?

What is "Other" and What Can I Do About It?

  • Why does my itunes summary show so much in the 'other' tab

while tryng to synch my iphone, it told me i didnt have enough room for my 5 new songs, that i need over 3mb to do this. then i took a whole bunch of stuff off my phone including ALL of my music, (and fb!)and the 'other' in my summary tab shot up to 7.14 gb!!!! that's almost half my 16 gb! what does the 'other' tab mean?

    Hey ridgegirl,
Try out these steps to resolve the issue:
Orphaned files may remain on your iOS device if it is physically disconnected while syncing music, podcasts, videos, or photos. This can prevent iTunes from syncing the iOS device on subsequent sync sessions. When this happens, the Capacity indicator in iTunes may report a large amount of "Other" disk usage for the iOS device. To resolve this issue:
Turn off the music or photo sync option in iTunes for the device.
Click Apply to sync the changes to the device.
Turn the music and photo sync options for the device on again.
Click Apply again to try to sync the device to iTunes.
If the 'Not enough free space' alert appears, continue to step 5.
Turn off the automatic syncing functions for the iOS device. To do this:
Select the iOS device from the iTunes window and click the Summary tab.
Deselect "Automatically sync when this device is connected" and select the "Sync only checked songs and videos" checkbox.
Click Apply to sync the changes to the device.
Reduce the amount of data that is being synced to the device and resync the device. For example, if syncing your Music library exceeds the memory capacity of the device, choose "Selected playlists" to transfer rather than "All songs and playlists" under the Music tab in iTunes.
If the 'Not enough free space' alert appears, continue to step 6.
    Restore using iTunes.

  • What is "Other" data in iTunes for my iPhone?  And why is it over a GB?

In iTunes, my iPhone reports I have 1.6GB of "Other" data. It appeared immediately after I deleted and unsubscribed from a podcast (via iTunes) which had 24 large videos, and then sync'd with my iPhone (which was running out of space).
The podcasts appeared to be removed from my iPhone, however I still had no space and I saw that now I had this 1.6GB of other stuff.
I had a look around for answers on this and the default answer given is "restore your iPhone". So I did a backup and then did a restore to that backup. I don't have an earlier backup (except one that's from last year) and I really don't want to lose my app data and settings.
The restore didn't remove the 1.6GB of data.
So the question is, am I right in assuming the 1.6GB of other data is the left over podcasts that are now corrupt somehow? Or is it something else? i.e. What constitutes "other" data?
Second, any other ideas how to get rid of that other data?
    Thank
    Boz

Other that large is corrupt data. Normally, a restore from backup fixes things.
So, I discovered something new about iTunes today. The "Restore from backup" context menu option that appears when you click your iOS device in the Devices tree on the left of iTunes, is different from the "Restore" button that you get on the Summary tab for your device.
"Restore from backup" just does an restore from backup. Whereas the Restore button does a restore and then restore from backup. Make sense? Hmm.
This distinctly different functionality is not clear to the user, indeed the advice I was given above was to "Restore from backup", which in this instance is not what is needed to clear out the "Other" data.
In summary, to fix my problem I:
    - performed a complete Backup (from iOS Device context menu)
    - performed a Restore (clicked Restore button on Summary tab)
    - after device is reset with latest iOS software, chose latest backup
My other data shrank to 0.2Gb, and as an added bonus another 1.4 GB of other space was freed up from Apps and Video, even though I can't find anything missing, so I suspect there was other non-"Other" data that was cleared out by this procedure.

  • What is "other" in the iPod capacity bar on the summary page?

I'd like to know what the other is for on my iTouch summary page? It is currently showing as 291 mb. All I have loaded is some video and music, there are no apps installed?
    Thanks,
    Dave

Other can be Album Artwork, Notes, Contacts, Firmware (the operating system software) etc. or (and this doesn't apply to the iPod Touch or iPhone which don't have the option to enabled for disk use), files that are on there if you are using the iPod as a removable storage device. If you feel that Other is being incorrectly reported then try restoring your iPod.

  • HT1349 Apparently you can have 5 computers registered for iTunes.  I have 3 active computers but I guess I have other computers that are still activated that I no longer use.  Is there a way to delete or see what the others are?  Please help!

Apparently you can have 5 computers registered for iTunes.  I have 3 active computers but I guess I have other computers that are still activated that I no longer use and I no longer have as they crashed.  Is there a way to delete or see what the other computers are so that I can go in and delete them?  I've tried to email Apple directly but apparently I need my hardware # and obviously I do not have that # since I don't have the equipment any longer.  Any help is greatly appreicated.  I am trying to add another computer and it won't allow me to as they say I'm at my limit.  Please help!

    Sure.
Just open up iTunes on your computer -> Go to the iTunes Store -> Click your e- maill address (top right corner of the window) -> Type in your password for your Apple ID -> Under Computer Authorisations (underneath your Apple ID account balance and address) -> Press 'Deauthorise All'
-> This will deauthorise all computers and devices from your iTunes account -> you then need to re- authorise any computers/ devices you would like to use with your Apple ID for iTunes content -> to do this, select the Store tab along the menu at the top (where 'File', 'Edit', 'View' etc..... are) -> Then click 'Authorise this Computer' -> Type in your Apple ID -> Voila!
For any iOS devices (non- computers) you wish to re- authorise, these will automatically do so when you go to play iTunes content, download an app or anything like that on those devices!
    Hope this helps!

  • I think we should have been given the option to move books from iTunes to iBooks. All mine were downloaded CD booklets and inserts which were in their right place in iTunes. What do others think?

I think we should have been given the option to have our books moved from iTunes to iBooks. All mine were CD booklets and inserts downloaded with the CDs, and the obvious place for them was in iTunes. As it is now, I can no longer use my own convention for naming, sorting etc. The sort facility in iBooks does not work. What do others think?

  • What happens if i use a software other than itunes to transfer music?

    Hello people,
Im new to apple and its softwares, tricks..etc.
So the question is i purchased some stuff from itunes i would like to have in phone and i also have loads of music in my pc that were taken from old cds etc...after my research i noticed there is a itune match or someting that can allow you do that with a 25$/year cost which i agree is not much and  i might end up doing it  but i don't find it right to NOT HAVE FULL control over my stuff...so is there anyway to be able to transfer these old songs into iphone without using itunes without any risk or problem?

There are a couple of programs that kinda work...

In tune show all summary activity during sync between nb and apple device. One of the summary is memory space status. Audio mayb3gb, photo 2gb, app with 3gb. What is other? Other consist of what type of file? It show quite substantial storage capacity?? Anyone can answer what is in other??

"Other" includes data such as contact information and photos assigned to contacts, calendar events, Safari bookmarks/cookies/history, notes created with the Notes application, SMS messages, email stored locally or cached, and 3rd party application data created and stored by the application.
If "other" is more than say .75GB at the most, you had a corrupt sync. Try syncing again and if the problem persists, the recognized fix for this is to restore your iPad.

  • HT1711 At the bottom of the itunes main page, the colored bar graph indicates what amount of media i have on my iphone.  What does"other" stand for?!

can anyone tell me at the bottom of the itunes main screen, on the color graph what does "other' mean?

It is whatever does not fit in the remaining categories.
Could be app data, contacts, calendars, favorites, recents, etc

  • What is "Other" in the iTunes list of Usage?

When I connect my 32GB iPhone 4S to iTunes, it shows a list of apps and usage amounts; audio, photos, apps.  It also says Other, and this is by far the largest amount, 11.3GB.  When I check usage on my phone, no single app is that large, nor is the sum of all apps.   What is this?  I want to trim down the usage, but don't know how to find out what is Other.
