What is "other" on your ipod?

So what's the "other" (shown in orange) on the bar showing capacity of your ipod? It comes after music (shown in blue).

Other can be Album Artwork, Notes, Contacts, Firmware etc. or files that are on there if you are using the iPod as a removable storage device. If you feel that Other is being incorrectly reported then try restoring your iPod. Restoring will erase the iPod's hard drive, reload the software and put it back to default settings. Once the restore is complete follow the on screen instructions and it should connect to iTunes and give you a prompt to automatically update your library onto the fresh installation. If you want to update manually or using selected playlists choose no and it will default to manual mode and you can choose whatever setting you like: Restoring iPod to factory settings with iTunes 7

Hi is there any software that allows you to see what is playing on your ipod that is docked in the ipod hi-fi. can you change the songs from my mac.
the ipod hi-fi is the other side of the room to the mac
    Please help

You can connect your Mac with an airport express (wireless) and then plug the airport express with your iPod HiFi (either optical or analogue). You can play the music from the iTunes with your Mac (without using the iPod).

    To restore from backup see:

If you restore from iCloud backup the apps will be automatically downloaded. If you restore from iTunes backup the apps and music have to be in the iTunes library since synced media like apps and music are not included in the backup of the iOS device that iTunes makes.
You can redownload most iTunes purchases by:

I'd like to know what the other is for on my iTouch summary page? It is currently showing as 291 mb. All I have loaded is some video and music, there are no apps installed?

Other can be Album Artwork, Notes, Contacts, Firmware (the operating system software) etc. or (and this doesn't apply to the iPod Touch or iPhone which don't have the option to enabled for disk use), files that are on there if you are using the iPod as a removable storage device. If you feel that Other is being incorrectly reported then try restoring your iPod.

  • What is "Other" when syncing iPod in iTunes

I've been having issues syncing my iPod with my system for a few days now and while syncing I clicked on my iPod and got the follwoing screen:
    http://homepage.mac.com/techd2/iTunes.png
What exactly is "other" ? I figure it's temp files because it grows and shrinks while I'm syncing. I noticed it was over a gig when it stopped syncing my movies then when I deselected the movies it dropped down to the size it is now.

Hi Tech-D, sorry you're still having troubles man. I believe, not exactly sure, that other things like fragmentation is included in the "Other". Although, a fresh restore is supposed to take care of fragmentation. I don't believe you should even get fragmentation on your iPod unless you unplug your iPod from the usb without first ejecting it. If you have windows, you even have to go a step further and choose "Safely unplug usb device", or something like that. There would be an icon in your Systems Tray that looked like a little wafer with a green arrow on top of it. You would right click on that and choose to safely unplug. Sorry I couldn't be of anymore help.

  • What is "other" in your storage?

when my iphone is connected to my itunes account, I can see how much storage I have available.  I see audio, apps, photos, and Other.  What is Other?  It is using up the most space.

Other is content not coverd by the other categories.
It should be a gb or so.
Musch more than this indicates corrupt files.  A restore should resolve.

  • What exactly does "updating your ipod" mean?

Yes... like, is it everytime you load new songs? or... what... thanks for your answers!

there's a couple of senses in which it's used around here.
one sense is "transferring music/videos/notes/etc to the ipod with itunes". you'll also sometimes see that referred to as "syncing". that's the sense that is being used in this document:
    iPod: Artwork missing from songs
the other main sense is "upgrading the ipod software" ... that's what you do when you run the ipod updater, plug in the ipod, and click the "update" button. that's the sense that is being used in this document:

  • What is "other" on my ipod and removing apps

Wondering what "other" is on my ipod?  It is taking up 1.43gb of space, how do I reduce it?  Was wondering if restoring it back to original settngs would get rid of everything in the "other" section.  Also, is there any way to remove factory installed apps such as passbook, newstand, messages, game center?  I don't use them and they are taking up space.

Dead wrong. The "other" category is items that are not included in the other categories listed. That is why is is called "other".
It consists of music artwork, sometimes some app data and other this are stored there.
1.43 GB is on the high side of normal. If larger that usually indicates that the "other" included corrupted files.  Usually restoring from backup eliminated the corrupted files. However, sometimes restoring to factory settings/new iPod is required.
    To restore from backup see:
    iOS: How to back up
To restore to factory settings/new iPod see:
iTunes: Backing up, updating, and restoring iOS software
The iOS is taken up by the difference between the rated capacity  and the "available" listed in Settings>General>About>Available.
An 8 GB iPod will have about 6.4 GB available to the user.

  • Managing What Music Goes Onto Your iPod Touch

    Hello everyone,
I would like to manually specify what podcasts, photos and movies get synced to my iPod.
I would then like iTunes to fill up the remaining available space with either a random selection of albums or ones that I select.
I must be thick because I've searched all the help, documentation and discussions and I can't find out how to do it.
    Can anyone help me please?
    Thanks
    Ian

    Hi Ian,
I just set up a Smart Playlist and ask it for nn MB of music (where nn is a little less than the space available) and then sync that playlist. It's not perfect as you can get some duplicates now and again, but is the easiest answer.
    cheers

  • What is "Other" on my iPod?

Since I just got a 2 gig iPod nano (used to have 1 gig nano) I was looking at the summary and looking at the status bar that tells how much music you have, how many pics, and "Other". What is the other stuff? Because I don't have any podcast on my iPod or even on iTunes. I also don't have any pics on my iPod. So I went to the podcast section and the box was checked that said "sync all unplayed podcast" so I unchecked it thinking it would get rid of the "other" stuff. But instead of getting rid of it, used to be only 4.5 other stuff, it went up to 7.5 other stuff. What can I do to get rid of this other stuff?

The Other includes album artwork, etc. 7.5MB of Other is really not a lot.
To get rid of it, Restore the iPod, which may reduce it if it gets out of control (7.5MB is not out of control).

First try to recover your original password.ID so you can redownload iTunes purchases

Place the iOS device in Recovery Mode and then connect to your computer and restore via iTunes. The iPod will be erased.
