What is other when syncing?

I purchased a film but cant add it to my ipad, im pretty sure ther is space but my other usage is abnormally large for some reason 10gb

How Do I Get Rid Of The “Other” Data Stored On My iPad Or iPhone?
http://tinyurl.com/85w6xwn
With an iOS device, the “Other” space in iTunes is used to store things like documents, settings, caches, and a few other important items. If you sync lots of documents to apps like GoodReader, DropCopy, or anything else that reads external files, your storage use can skyrocket. With iOS 5, you can see exactly which applications are taking up the most space. Just head to Settings > General > Usage, and tap the button labeled Show All Apps. The storage section will show you the app and how much storage space it is taking up. Tap on the app name to get a description of the additional storage space being used by the app’s documents and data. You can remove the storage-hogging application and all of its data directly from this screen, or manually remove the data by opening the app. Some applications, especially those designed by Apple, will allow you to remove stored data by swiping from left to right on the item to reveal a Delete button.

what is "other" when syncing?  why does it take up so much space?

... we have alot of space taken up by "other" what is this?
Other is usually around 1 GB...
A  ' Large Other ' usually indicates Corrupt Data...
First Try a Restore from Backup...
But... if the Large Other Persists, that is an Indicator of Corrupt Data in the Backup...
Then a Restore as New is the way to go...

  • What is "Other" when syncing iPod in iTunes

I've been having issues syncing my iPod with my system for a few days now and while syncing I clicked on my iPod and got the follwoing screen:
    http://homepage.mac.com/techd2/iTunes.png
What exactly is "other" ? I figure it's temp files because it grows and shrinks while I'm syncing. I noticed it was over a gig when it stopped syncing my movies then when I deselected the movies it dropped down to the size it is now.

Hi Tech-D, sorry you're still having troubles man. I believe, not exactly sure, that other things like fragmentation is included in the "Other". Although, a fresh restore is supposed to take care of fragmentation. I don't believe you should even get fragmentation on your iPod unless you unplug your iPod from the usb without first ejecting it. If you have windows, you even have to go a step further and choose "Safely unplug usb device", or something like that. There would be an icon in your Systems Tray that looked like a little wafer with a green arrow on top of it. You would right click on that and choose to safely unplug. Sorry I couldn't be of anymore help.

  • What is "Other" when syncing iPhone & iTunes?

When I try to sync my iPhone with iTunes, I'm now getting a message that the phone can't sync because the "Other" category is taking up 9.98GM.   This is a new problem.  Previously, I couldn't sync because of too much on my phone and because going through the usual steps to remove music wasn't working, I went through the steps to restore factory settings.  After then restoring the data from "back up" and clearing out the music I wanted cleared out, I now get this message of 9.98 GB in "Other" and have no idea what that is!!  I'm just trying to put on some audio books and some music.

I appreciate both your replies; downloading and trying to use "PhoneClean" turned out not to be what I needed (and it bugged me that it did half the job before prompting me to buy it).
For a third time, I restored the iPhone settings to factory settings, then restored the "back up".  This helped part of the problem by getting rid of the "Other" stuff.  The problem now is that when I try to "Sync", it adds more to my phone than I want!

  • What is lost when syncing to new computer?

I know questions like this are asked all the time but I'm not sure exactly what to search for so I figured I'd just create a new post.
When syncing to a new computer, what exactly is removed from the iPhone. I don't really care if I lose all of my music because I have it all on my external hard drive or on my computer. The only thing I'm really worried about is losing all of my contacts.
And let's speak hypothetically and say my phone is jailbroken and I have a bunch of apps not from the app store. Will I lose those as well?
    Any advice when doing this?

On a compatible program ( outlook, address book, ical, etc.) The manual will give you more info.

  • Backup itouch on another mac and not lose whats on itouch when sync

backup itouch on another mac and not lose whats on itouch when sync

Make sure your new Mac is authorized in iTunes. Disable autosync in itunes, connect your ipod, right click on it in the device list and choose backup.
This will save data, pictures and settings to itunes. See what's included in this backup here: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1766
Transfer your purchases the same way to copy all apps and bought media from the Store to your computer.
Set up at least one contact and event on your new Mac, to be able the merge your calendars and contacts after your ipod got wiped during the first sync.
The rest of the data can be restored from the backup you made.
    Restoring: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1414
Music is one way only, from the computer to your device, unless you bought the songs in itunes and transferred your purchases.
There is 3rd party software out there, but not supported by Apple, see this thread: http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=2013615&tstart=0
You can save other data following this article: How to back up your data and set up as a new device

  • Some Contacts getting combined with others when syncing from google

I am having an issue where some of my contacts are getting merged when syncing from google.
For example I have 3 contacts:
Company 1 dispatch which has two phone numbers
Company 2 dispatch which has two phone numbers
Company 3 dispatch which has two phone numbers
On my Pre, I see two entries in contacts:
Company 1 dispatch which has two phone numbers
Company 2 dispatch which has four phone numbers
I can not search for company 3, but thier phone number appears under company 2.
    Any ideas, suggestions,etc

Same thing happens for me, AND when syncing with more than one service  (ie google and facebook) my original contacts that I had entered into the phone prior to the synergy sync,   get deleted.  I had to take like 2 hours and create a new gmail account and add all of my contacts 1 by 1,  and then sync the phone.   VERY frustrating, and Im kind of annoyed that the pre doesn't work with Sprint's Mobile Sync.
Other than that I do love my Pre.  ;o)

  • HT1386 How do we keep one phone contacts seperate from the other when syncing with itunes

How do you keep one phones contacts, calendar, etc from another phone when syncing with itunes?

    Disable auto-syncing. Here’s how:
    1. Before you plug the iPhone or iPod into the computer, go to iTunes.
    2. On a Mac, go to the iTunes menu -> Preferences -> Devices.
On a PC, go to Edit -> Settings -> Devices
    3. In the pop up window, look for the icon or tab that says Devices. Choose it.
    4. Just below the box, you’ll see a checkbox reading "Prevent iPods, iPhones, and iPads from syncing automatically."
    5. Check it and click OK at the bottom of the window.
Now when you plug the phone in it won't automatically star syncing.

  • What problems arise when syncing the iPad with another laptop with iTunes.

I have to use another laptop to sync with iTunes for my iPad. What problems arise ie. do I lose my music?

    Sync with "new" computer
    https://discussions.apple.com/message/11527071#11527071
    1) Without connecting your iPad to your laptop, start iTunes. Click on Edit. Click on Preferences. Click on Devices. Check the box next to "Prevent your iPod etc. from automatically syncing." Click OK.
    2) Now connect your iPad to your laptop and start iTunes.
    3) When iTunes starts, right click on your iPad under Devices in the left column. Select Transfer purchases etc.
    4) After it finishes transferring all your apps to your new laptop, right click on your iPad and select Backup your iPad.
    5) After it finishes backing up your iPad, right click on your iPad and select Restore etc.
    6) After it finishes restoring, left click on your iPad , then click on the Apps tab on top, and check the box next to Sync Apps, then click on Apply below.
If everything on your iPad looks good after the sync, go back and click on Edit / Preferences / Devices and UN-check the box next to Prevent your iPod etc. The only other thing you may want to check is if your contacts, bookmarks, etc. are syncing correctly now. If not, go to the Info tab after connecting and make sure you indicate which features you want to sync with what sources.
    That should do it.

  • What exactly happens when syncing two PCs having truly conflicting settings (not just different tabs or bookmarks to be merged)? Is one defined as a master?

While different tabs or bookmarks can simply be added/merged (see question of handysubman one year ago), more differentiated rules are required when conflicting settings have been defined, e.g. different starting pages, or different volumes/folders to save downloads, or different applications to open specific file types...
Is one of the machines defined as a master, or are individual conflicts left to the user to solve, or... ?

When you setup Sync you should have seen the Setup Options window. That is the "control" for which set of data to use. IOW the "Master" at time of setup when adding each "new device". After that all devices are equal partners. ''FirefoxHome on iOS devices and Firefox on Android devices vary a bit from the way the desktop versions work.
If you want different settings per device, de-select those settings from being synchronized. i.e., Preferences for Homepage, download folder, and MIME-types

  • Trying to get head around this 'other' when syncing iPhone4S

I am still trying to reduce my other which takes up alot of space on iphone and when i sync seems to be huge.

If "other" is much larger than around 1GB or so, this indicates corrupt data. To fix, you can first try restoring from backup, followed by syncing your content back to the phone. If no change after restoring from backup, that means the corrupt data is included in your iPhone backup, & you will have to restore as a new device to get rid of it.
You do not necessarily have to restore as new first, as suggested in the post above, to fix.

  • What device overrides when syncing iTunes?

    please can someone advise?
I have put together a long playlist on my iPad (although it started as a short playlist on my mac).
I would like to load the updated playlist onto my iTunes on my mac, from my iPad.
If i press "sync" on my mac, will the old playlist on the mac overwrite my updated playlist on my iPad?
How do i tell the Mac that i want it to accept the iPad playlist as the correct one?
    thank you

Syncing is a one-way process only - from computer to iDevice.  Not the other way round.

  • How do i remove photo albums from Iphone that appear when syncing which I cannot prevent

Iphone 4.  just synced with laptop and to my horror now have every photo from laptop in albums on my phone which i cannot remove.  Have gone back into sync mode and it wont let me access the albums on phone to delete.  Such ridiculous situation not to be able to delete by choice on phone.  Sync only repeats the process.  Not a happy iphone user.  Can anyone help and suggest a simple way to remove the albums.  Also what to do when syncing to avoid happening again. When syncing,  I dont seem to be able to access my iphone or chose what sync processes i want as the sync only happens as one process including the photos.  Is this a fault??  Cannot believe Apple would make this such a difficult process.  Help appreciated.

Thanks but it wont let me choose and once the albums on iphone it wont let me remove..... any more thoughts??
