How to get rid of the other from the MacBook Air Memory? I reviewed my newly purchased MBA ear;y 2014 i7 8GB RAM and there was 24+ GB of "Other". I have Yosemite. I have restored to factory with no luck. is there a memory cleaner or process to eliminate what is not needed in Other? I know some files there are settings, and such but not 24+ GB worth is such of stuff.

  • What is "other" in the capacity bar and how do i manage it?

What is "other" in the capacity bar and how do I manage it?

The "other" is mainly corrupt files and files that did not get deleted by apps one the app was done with the file. Normally the other s less than 0.25 GB.  To reduce the size of other, usually a restore to factory defaults/new iPodis required.  Sometimes restoring from backup helps a little.

  • HT1689 What is other in the iPad

What is other on the iPad when syncing.  It seems to take up a lot of space.  Can I reduce on the amount of other without creating an issue on the iPad?

How Do I Get Rid Of The “Other” Data Stored On My iPad Or iPhone?
    http://tinyurl.com/85w6xwn
With an iOS device, the “Other” space in iTunes is used to store things like documents, settings, caches, and a few other important items. If you sync lots of documents to apps like GoodReader, DropCopy, or anything else that reads external files, your storage use can skyrocket. With iOS 5, you can see exactly which applications are taking up the most space. Just head to Settings > General > Usage, and tap the button labeled Show All Apps. The storage section will show you the app and how much storage space it is taking up. Tap on the app name to get a description of the additional storage space being used by the app’s documents and data. You can remove the storage-hogging application and all of its data directly from this screen, or manually remove the data by opening the app. Some applications, especially those designed by Apple, will allow you to remove stored data by swiping from left to right on the item to reveal a Delete button.

What is "other" in the storage category and how do you reduce that amount?

A  ' Large Other ' usually indicates Corrupt Data...
First Try a Restore from Backup... But... if the Large Other Persists, that is an Indicator of Corrupt Data in the Backup... Then a Restore as New is the way to go...

  • What is "other" on the storage bar? I have hardly any storage left and it's mainly taken up by "other"

What does "other" on the storage bar? I have hardly any storage left and a lot of it is taken up by "other" but I'm not sure what to delete to make more room.
    My trash is empty.
Hope someone can shed some light on this for me.
    Thanks.

For information about the Other category in the Storage display, see this support article.
Empty the Trash if you haven't already done so. If you use iPhoto, empty its internal Trash first:
    iPhoto ▹ Empty Trash
Do the same in other applications, such as Aperture, that have an internal Trash feature. Then reboot. That will temporarily free up some space.
According to Apple documentation, you need at least 9 GB of available space on the startup volume (as shown in the Finder Info window) for normal operation. You also need enough space left over to allow for growth of the data. There is little or no performance advantage to having more available space than the minimum Apple recommends. Available storage space that you'll never use is wasted space.
When Time Machine backs up a portable Mac, some of the free space will be used to make local snapshots, which are backup copies of recently deleted files. The space occupied by local snapshots is reported as available by the Finder, and should be considered as such. In the Storage display of System Information, local snapshots are shown asBackups. The snapshots are automatically deleted when they expire or when free space falls below a certain level. You ordinarily don't need to, and should not, delete local snapshots yourself. If you followed bad advice to disable local snapshots by running a shell command, you may have ended up with a lot of data in the Other category. Reboot and it should go away.
See this support article for some simple ways to free up storage space.
You can more effectively use a tool such as OmniDiskSweeper (ODS) to explore the volume and find out what's taking up the space. You can also delete files with it, but don't do that unless you're sure that you know what you're deleting and that all data is safely backed up. That means you have multiple backups, not just one.
Deleting files inside an iPhoto or Aperture library will corrupt the library. Any changes to a photo library must be made from within the application that created it. The same goes for Mail files.
Proceed further only if the problem isn't solved by the above steps.
ODS can't see the whole filesystem when you run it just by double-clicking; it only sees files that you have permission to read. To see everything, you have to run it as root.
    Back up all data now.
If you have more than one user account, make sure you're logged in as an administrator. The administrator account is the one that was created automatically when you first set up the computer.
Install ODS in the Applications folder as usual. Quit it if it's running.
Triple-click anywhere in the line of text below on this page to select it, then copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C:
    sudo /Applications/OmniDiskSweeper.app/Contents/MacOS/OmniDiskSweeper
Launch the built-in Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Paste into the Terminal window (command-V). You'll be prompted for your login password, which won't be displayed when you type it. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. If you see a message that your username "is not in the sudoers file," then you're not logged in as an administrator.
The application window will open, eventually showing all files in all folders, sorted by size with the largest at the top. It may take a few minutes for ODS to finish scanning.
I don't recommend that you make a habit of doing this. Don't delete anything while running ODS as root. If something needs to be deleted, make sure you know what it is and how it got there, and then delete it by other, safer, means. When in doubt, leave it alone or ask for guidance.
When you're done with ODS, quit it and also quit Terminal.

  • HT1386 what is "other" in the capicity on my phone

When it shows in itunes the capicity of the phone. It has "photos" "music" "apps" and "other". I have over 7GB of capicity on my phone taken up with "other" how can i delete some of that down? Can i delete it down? What is other composed of?

This indicates corrupt files.  A restore should resolve.

  • What is "Other" in the iTunes list of Usage?

When I connect my 32GB iPhone 4S to iTunes, it shows a list of apps and usage amounts; audio, photos, apps.  It also says Other, and this is by far the largest amount, 11.3GB.  When I check usage on my phone, no single app is that large, nor is the sum of all apps.   What is this?  I want to trim down the usage, but don't know how to find out what is Other.

  • HT1386 What is "other", in the sync bar?

I have 2.34G in "OTHER"! What is "other"?

"Other" data is real data that you put on your phone by using the built in apps. It is not music, not videos, not pictures and not App Store app data. It is "OTHER" meaning everything that does not fall into these categories. Such as:
    email messages and attachments
    Reminders
    Calendar entries
    Contacts
    Text messages
    MMS messages and attachments
    Genius data
    Music cover art
    Operating system settings
    Safari cache
    bookmarks
    Game Center status
    Music catalog
Probably a few I've missed. There was a problem in an earlier version where deleted MMS messages left behind their attachments, but that has been fixed as of 6.1.
You will find posts from people who said they recovered over 1 GB of space by just deleting old text messages.
If you want Other to be smaller you will have to keep less data on your phone; delete old MMS and texts, delete old email (especially from the "deleted" folder), clear the cache, eliminate cover art.

  • What it "other " in the capacity bar?

when my iphone is plugged in to itunes i check to see how much capacity i have left. i have 2.3 gig of "other". what is other. ive deleted everything off of my ihone and its still there. whats next?

Do a sync just before you restore. This will sync contacts and calendar to the applications you have chosen and will back up everything else. After the restore you will be given the option to reload the backup on the phone. So you should not lose anything unless you don't currently sync calendar and contacts to the desktop.

  • How do I see what I plug into the macbook on the desktop?

When I got my macbook pro 13 I was able to see what was in my diskdrive and also whatever was plugged into it.  How do I turn that back on?  Funny thing is I do not even remember turning it off.

    Welcome to Apple Support Communities
By default, OS X doesn't show disks in the desktop. To turn this on, open a Finder window, go to Finder menu (on the menu bar) > Preferences > General, and tick "Hard disks" and "External drives". After doing it, all the drives will appear on Desktop

  • What is "other" on my macbook pro hardrive?

On my macbook pro, I have noticed when I go to storage I have 52.37 GB's of of memory used under the "other" category.
The only big application I have download off the web is Photoshop which only takes 1 gb. All of my pages and keynote files are stored on the cloud.
I recently used the application Disk Inventory X to find out what it the problem is.
Under the 50 gbs of unused space it had a bunch of random blank files. Each file was named a bunch of random letters and numbers. I typed in the folder the stuff was in to find out that it is from itunes backups. Will restoring my backups gibve me back 50 gbs? How can I get my memory back.

  • What is "other" in the iPod capacity bar on the summary page?

I'd like to know what the other is for on my iTouch summary page? It is currently showing as 291 mb. All I have loaded is some video and music, there are no apps installed?
    Thanks,
    Dave

Other can be Album Artwork, Notes, Contacts, Firmware (the operating system software) etc. or (and this doesn't apply to the iPod Touch or iPhone which don't have the option to enabled for disk use), files that are on there if you are using the iPod as a removable storage device. If you feel that Other is being incorrectly reported then try restoring your iPod.

  • What refresh rates does the Macbook Pro 2011 support? (Internal Display)

While I know you used to be able to change the refresh rate via General Settings, now you have to use an app or probably something terminal related.
Ignoring this, I just got a new 2011 MBP when my old one couldn't be fixed and after having the display/resolution upgraded I noticed that, when scrolling webpages, there is a bit of... I dunno, ghosting or something? Nothing that indicates there is a problem with the display or card, but it's something that could probably be fixed by a stronger refresh rate.
So my question is as the subject states. What is supported? I read 60 and 75 is typical for Apple, but I want confirmation. Remember, internal display, not external.
    Thanks!

For some reason Displays no longer shows that information, so I don't know what it is. However, the last time I saw the information on a 2009 MBP it was 75.
I'd think there is a utility around that might provide the info like Display Maestro 1.1.7 or SwitchResX.
