What is 'Permissions differ...'?

Of late I am facing some problems in my Mac's performance. I have had to resort to using Disk utility for gauging the status of the Mac's HD and on both occasions, I found that there was this problem which came up under 'verify disk permissions' : permissions differ...[see screenshot, if this could help in diagnosing what the problem is]:
Of late I have been going to different sites on the net such as news and You Tube and is this problem related to such internet related issues? I would like to be enlightened in this matter since I have not experienced this problem earlier.

Whilst there is little point in using 'verify permissions' (you might as well go straight to 'repair permissions'), you can in fact ignore these messages:
As long as the report ends up with 'Permissions repair complete' then, as far as permissions go, you are fine. You can ignore the various statements in the report:
Permissions you can ignore on 10.5 onwards:
http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1448
Using 'should be -rw-r--r-- , they are lrw-r--r--' as an example, you will see the that the permissions are not changed, but the | indicates a different location. This is because an update to Leopard onwards changed the location of a number of system components.
Poster rccharles has provided this description of what it all means:
drwxrwxrwx
d = directory
r = read
w = write
x = executeable program

  • "Permissions Differ..." - what does this mean?

    My MacBookPro won't boot except in safe mode.  When I run the 'Verify Disk Permissions' process, I get a list of 'Permissions Differ on...'   Can you tell me what this means?  I have clicked 'Repair Permissions', but the same list returns next time I run 'Verify Disk Permissions'.

    Verify permissions is just that. It checks if they are ok, but does not fix them. You need to do a "repair permissions".
    While bad permissions may cause trouble, I suspect that there may be more to it than that.
    If you have 10.6.8, as your profile says, boot your mac using the Snow Leopard DVD and run Disk Utility from there and do a Repair Disk as well (this will test the integrity of your drive's file structure). If you use Lion or later, do the same using the "recovery partition" that these systems install on your drive (hold down the option key at startup to choose a different startup volume).

  • What to do about warning "directory permissions differ on..." ?

    Hello!
    I have gotten this warning when upgrading today:
    warning: directory permissions differ on var/run/gdm/
    filesystem: 1775  package: 711
    warning: directory permissions differ on var/log/gdm/
    filesystem: 1770  package: 755
    This means that the permissions on my computer didn't match with the ones from the package being upgraded/installed, right?
    Which permissions should I leave for that folder (var/log/gdm/) and why? And why is the warning on there twice with different values? i'm confused

    If you or another package had good reason to change it, leave it at its current value. If not, change it to the package value listed above (and see if anything breaks).
    You're seeing different permissions for two different folders: read the warnings more closely.

    > I repair permissions using the Tiger disc upgrade.
    One thing to note...  When running Repair Disk Permissions, it is best to run it while started up normally, from your normal startup disk, not from a Mac OS X installation disc.  The only time you should run it while started up from an installation disc is if some problem is preventing you from starting up normally. OTOH, Repair Disk can only be used when starting up from a different disk (such as an installation disc).
    So, I would start up normally, run Disk Utility, and use Repair Disk Permissions on your normal startup disk.
    NOTE:  Repair Disk Permissions often gives alerts messages that can be ignored.  They are more "informational," not serious errors.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1448
    You should still run it periodically.  When you run it, what needs to be repaired has been repaired; consider the rest of it an FYI.  I've never experience a problem, where a Repair Disk Permissions message actually caused a problem.  But, if you ever get an error while running Repair Disk (or Verify Disk), that is usually a serious problem.

  • HT202447 Drive Utility: Permissions differ on "Library/Internet Plug-Ins/JavaAppletPlugin.plugin"; should be lrwxr-xr-x ; they are drwxr-xr-x .

    I downloaded & installed Java 7 for Mountain Lion 10.8.3 from http://www.java.com/download/mac_download.jsp . Upon running Verify Permissions in Drive Utility I receive the following messgae: Permissions differ on “Library/Internet Plug-Ins/JavaAppletPlugin.plugin”; should be lrwxr-xr-x ; they are drwxr-xr-x . Disk Utilities is unable to repair the permissions error.

    Sorry, what I meant is I was getting the message "missing plugin", so I thought I had to repair Permissions and every time I tried I got that message “Library/Internet Plug-Ins/JavaAppletPlugin.plugin”; should be lrwxr-xr-x ; they are drwxr-xr-x", but then I followed Java instructions. I went back to Java 6 and finally I could access my bank.
    I came across this article on the internet:
    For the second time in a month, Apple has effectively blacklisted the current version of the Java Web plugin on OS X. The block comes just days after it was discovered that the latest version of the plugin, which had been rushed out to patch a critical vulnerability, can still be exploited despite its heightened security mechanisms.
    Apple has worked to distance itself from Java in recent years. The company deprecated its own version of the Java virtual machine for OS X, instead deferring development to Oracle itself. The browser plugin in particular has become a common vector for malware attacks, and Apple removed the Java Web plugin from recent versions of OS X last year. Those needing the plugin must install it separately.
    I even tried "About Java for OS X 2013-003", but it also didn't work.
    That's why I decided to uninstalled Java 7 and installed 6 again and it worked.
    Thank you anyway.

  • "Permissions Differ on "usr/lib/ruby" ?!

    I'm using Leopard. After a recent startup problem with a Macbook I ran Disk Utilities, Verify Disk Permissions, and got the following message:
    "Permissions differ on "usr/lib/ruby", should be lrwxr-xr-x, they are drwxr-xr-x."
    1) What does this mean?
    2) Is it a serious security issue (i.e. malware)?
    3) What do I do about it?

    "If you use the menu item "Go" and select the "Go to folder..." option, you can type in:
    /usr/lib
    and check to see if ruby is an alias or an actual folder. It should appear as an alias in the Finder,"
    ============================================================================
    Ok, did that so I'll give you an long list of stuff I found, if you have the patience to go through it all.
    Finder > Go > Go to folder > /usr/lib. There are 4 Ruby aliases (with arrow symbol) there: "libruby.1.dylib" , "libsvnswigruby-1.dylib" , "libsvnswigruby-1.0.dylib" and "libsvnswigruby-1.0.0.0.dylib".
    AND, yes, there is also an ACTUAL RUBY FOLDER (blue, no arrow) in usr/lib.
    This Ruby folder breaks down into the following subfolders: (Finder>Library>)Ruby Folder (blue)> site_ruby > 1.8 > osx and powerpc-darwin 8.0 (two folders). In this "osx" folder there are 9 .rb files called active_record.rb, addressbook.rb, appkit.rb, cocoa.rb, coredate.rb, foundation.rb, NMOSXDockHelper.rb, qtkit.rb and webkit.rb. In the powerpc-darwin8.0 folder is a rubycocoa.bundle icon (like a lego brick).
    The followinig actual folders (blue, no arrow)) are also present in usr/lib: dtrace, groff, java, mecab, openmpi, pam, php, pkgconfig, podcastproducer, sa, samba, sas12, sqlite3, system, and zsh.
    =================================================================
    "and the original folder is supposed to be in
    "/System/Library/Frameworks/Ruby.framework/Versions/1.8/usr/lib/ruby"
    You might also check that location to see if the ruby folder is there."
    ==============================================================================
    Yes, it's also in this location. There are 2 main Ruby folders (blue, nop arrow) in System/ Library/Frameworks: one called 'RubyCocoa.framework', the other Ruby.framework. Ruby.framework > 1.8 > usr > (here there are three more folders 'bin' , 'lib' and 'share') lib > ruby. Here, in this ruby folder are aliases (site_ruby' and 'user_gems' as well as actual folders called 'gems' and 1.8. In 1.8 there are further subfolders named bigdecimal, cgi, date, digest and such which are NOT in the Ruby folder in usr/lib.
    ============================================================================
    I have no idea whether anything in the Mac OS actually uses ruby stuff or not. Ruby is a programming language, and Ruby on Rails is used in web development.

    By the way, I performed the Safari 3.1 update, Garageband Update 4.1.2 , iPhoto Update 7.1.2 , and Airport Utility 5.3.1 update two days before this all happened. I rebooted after the updates were fully installed, used the macbook (starting and rebooting 2 or 3 times duringthe course of the day, after which everything seemed fine). Two days later when I tried to start the Macbook I got a very long blue screen (in excess of 7-8 minutes) and had to try starting several times before I could log on. Then I ran the disk utility and got the Ruby permissions message. I've performed all the disk repair stuff and the message remains.
    I searched the Internet and could find no other examples of this happening. So, questions remain:
    1. Is there ANY possible way this could be malware, spyware, etc.?
    2. Any ideas as to how this change could have happened on my system?
    Thanks!

  • Permissions Differ on Applications/iBooks.app

    Hi I recently restarted my MacBook Pro mid 2012 with mavericks installed and was stuck on the start up loading screen.
    I restarted on the recovery drive and did disk utility.
    After verifying the disk permissions I came across a number of problems that are all relating to iBooks.app - examples;
    permissions differ on "applications/iBooks.app/contents/plugins/BKAssetEpub.bundle/contents/resources /cs.lproj/BKEpubAppearanceViewController.strings"; should be -rw-r--r-- they are -rw-rw-r--
    Group differs on "applications/iBooks.app/contents/plugins/BKAssetEpub.bundle/contents/resources /cs.lproj/localizable.strings"; should b 0; group is 80
    There is a lot of these errors that have come up. What caused this and what can I do to make sure this doesn't happen again?

    Hi sdhammond,
    Welcome to the Support Communities!
    The first thing I would suggest is to repair permissions for the iBooks app on your Macbook Pro.
    Troubleshooting permissions issues in Mac OS X
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2963
    This is a summary of the information provided in this article specific to your situation:
    Using the Finder application, open the Applications folder
    Right Click or Control Click on the iBooks app.
    Choose "Get Info" from the contextual menu.
    Look at the Sharing & Permissions section of this window.
    (You may need to click on the padlock icon and type in your computer administrator password).
    Under Administrators in the Sharing & Permissions section, you should see your name.
    Change permissions to Read & Write for account.
    Click OK
    If repairing permissions does not resolve your issue, here's how to delete the iBooks app and reinstall it from the Mac App Store:
    Troubleshooting the Mac App Store
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ts3624
    Open the Finder.
    Choose Applications from the Go menu.
    Locate your app in the Applications folder.
    Delete the app that will not open (drag iBooks to the trashcan icon on the dock).
    Open the Mac App Store.
    Ensure that you are logged in to the Mac App Store with the same account that purchased the app.
    Select the Purchases view from the top of the Mac App Store window.
    Find the app and click the Install button beside it.
    The app will be installed on the Mac you are using.
    Cheers,
    Judy

  • Permissions differ on Applications/iTunes.app/Contents/Resources...

    Hello,
    When I use Disk Utility to verify Disk Permissions on Macintosh HD, I get about 1,500 lines displayed like
    Permissions differ on “Applications/iTunes.app/Contents/Resources/Dutch.lproj/AACEncoderConfig.nib”; should be drwxr-xr-x ; they are -rwxr-xr-x .
    A few others are similar - only regarding Safari instead of iTunes.
    Why is it so?
    What does this mean?
    Repairing Disk Permissions doesn't help.
    What can I do to get rid of these messages?
    Many thanks!
    BTW Would this be the same under Mavericks?

    Hi,
    It's normal.
    The reported errors are less in the latest versions of the OS but some do keeping showing up.
    In Leopard the list of "regulars" is particularly long.
    Debate has continued for some time as the value of Repairing Permissions and whether to do it "Live" from the Boot volume of from the Utilities in a CMD + R reboot.
    For me, in Mavericks, a Safari item and a Installed printer item continue to show up.

  • [SOLVED] warning: directory permissions differ on var/log/wicd/

    Hi,
    I've seen several posts about this but I couldn't really figure out what's the appropriate action. Well, anyway I get the following error message when doing a pacman -Syu
    warning: directory permissions differ on var/log/wicd/
    filesystem: 1363 package: 755
    Is it a bug? Should I change the filepermission of the directory, and if so to what?

    This is sort of related,
    http://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?pid=432588
    or at least thats the post at the end has the same file permisions as I have in /var/log/wicd.
    $ ls -la /var/log/ | grep wicd
    d-wxrw--wt 2 root root 4096 2009-08-27 07:58 wicd
    I'm pretty bad at this stuff, but isn't this rather 1361 than 1363, or am I totally wrong? And why not allow theowner to read the file?

    Why would gdm need some 1770 permissions for log files? Looks pretty suspicious to me, especially the sticky bit thing. What did i miss?

    Permissions repair complete
    And when I verify Disk Permissions again then everything is the same like there wasnt any repair done.
    Why is that? How can I repair it?

    They are absolutely NOT fixed in Lion. It doesn't show up on initial installation, nor after any update, as you would expect if that were the cause- it just shows up, and then things begin to go wrong. Maybe they're 'all unrelated', maybe not. Either way, if you're not using ARD/Remote Management, why not just delete it? I have done that successfully in Lion, but have had problems doing so with Snow Leopard- when I try to delete it (with all the permissions set) it tells me the process shown in the photo is running. Strange, as I don't have Screen Sharing on, RM, or Remote Login on!
    This is photo evidence of my personal experiences with the issues both in Snow Leopad and Lion:
    That second pic is the process in SL that I can't quit and shouldn't be running. The last picture is of my permissions being clean after deleting the file in Lion.
    Have a look at this (older article, but relevant, shows what this is and how long it's gone on):
    http://www.macworld.com/article/134165/2008/06/ardagent.html
    And this is the associated process: RFBRegisterMDNS -- 'This is started up when you enable Screen Sharing', according to: http://reviews.cnet.com/8301-13727_7-10330407-263.html#ixzz1oPDZb1DH
    There is more info on that if you Google it.
    People on these forums have been very, very nasty about my posting my own problems with this. That only encourages me to try to help others. Ignoring the issue is absolutely not an answer. No one will tell you why the issue can't be repaired, or why it hasn't been fixed in 3-4 OS versions. They also can't explain the associated problems and processes. They just say to forget about it, and get extremely angry if you continue to question that. For that reason alone, I'll continue to post what I know when I see the question.

  • Permissions Differ Error / CS4 Crash At Startup /

    Hi All,
    I am running the following MacBook and am experiencing the issues below when trying to run CS4. I have been trying to figure this problem out for 5 days and am totally perplexed.
    *I have:*
    • Created a new user on the same computer and reinstalled the cs4 indesign software.
    • Recently downloaded a trial version of CS4 and have not been able to get it to run at all.
    • uninstalled and reinstalled the application
    • opened console and tracked the errors:
    1/26/09 1:40:09 PM com.apple.launchd[254] ([0x0-0x4f74f7].com.adobe.InDesign[3324]) Exited abnormally: Bus error
    • deleted all adobe prefs using uninstaller amd search and destroy
    • repaired permissions on the hard drive (errors occur below)
    • installed a new version of osx (archive version) 10.5.6
    • there has been no new hardware installed / ram installed
    • created an OSX 10.5.6 book firewire drive and startup disk
    • installed cs4 here and opened the program no problem
    *Any suggestions as yo how to get CS4 to work off my main hard drive with my current users? Any ideas would be really helpful.*

    *Should i delete these files?*
    - opened console and tracked the errors during startup of cs4:
    1/26/09 1:40:09 PM com.apple.launchd[254] ([0x0-0x4f74f7].com.adobe.InDesign[3324]) Exited abnormally: Bus error
    *Thanks for eyeballing this, I am totally flummoxed!!*

    Do NOT delete those files! They have nothing to do with your problem. It is irrelevant whether or not there is an execute permission on the png files inside Airport Utility's Resources. You can't execute an image. Ditto for the plist.
    As for the user id on the two JavaVM files: my install of 10.5.5 has the same user as yours, but my very clean 10.5.6 install has the user as root (0 rather than 95, which is updatesharing). Why the difference I have no idea, but both of my systems work just fine. The cups rss cache is also irrelevant, and my permissions are identical to yours. Personally, I think those are correct permissions and the Disk Utility data base is incorrect.
    Afraid I do not know what is causing InDesign to fail with a "bus error" on your startup drive, but run fine when booted off the external drive. You might try the Adobe forums:
    http://www.adobeforums.com/webx/.3bc4f8d8/
    Or try to figure out what things you have installed on the startup drive that are not present on the external drive.
