What is POP Account option in email settings?

What is the POP tab for in the email settings?  Mine says this:
Existing POP Account List POP Name POP E-Mail Address ActionThere are no POP accounts currently configured.
 Add New POP Account

it allows you to configure the webmail to access and retrieve a third party email account/addresses... simmilar to the way outlook works...

  • Crazy POP Account problem receiving emails

I am on Mail 2.08, and my ISP is Media Temple (shared server setup).
I have one account will not download email! It has exactly the same settings as others that work.
I can Get Info and Mail shows that my test message exists on the server. I can go on Squirrelmail and see the mail is there. I can set up the account in Entourage and download the email on the server no problem. I can use this account in Mail to send the test emails (smtp works). I run Connection Doctor and it logs in and says account is fine. There are no errors showing up in any attempts to download the mail, just a spinning wheel and then no mail in the inbox!!
I erased and set up the account on Media Temple's servers. That did not work. I have erased and set up the account within Mail multiple times. I threw out the plist and re-entered the account in Mail and that did not work. I wish I could download a new version of Mail so I can delete this one but don't know how to find that online.
I don't think there is any kind of cache or anything to clear with Mail.
I should note that on my first setup of this account, I set it up as IMAP. My primary email account is IMAP and works great, but when I was trying to make this new account work, Mail.app goes crazy with where it puts the folders for Sent, etc and what is mapped to what. So I then deleted it as IMAP and made new one as POP. I cannot find any evidence of a remainder of this work but wanted to note it here.
Media Temple tech support say they have many Mail.app users calling in with very mysterious problems like this one, that they cannot replicate and often like this where there are other accounts with the exact settings that work while others do not. Or that they suddenly stop working and the users cannot figure out why. I even tried to set up a server-based alias for this account on Media Temple to reroute the email to a new account that I can download on Mail.app but it would still not download them!!
    Help!!!
Thanks in advance for any advice, this has been hard to figure

Well, I don’t know why it doesn’t work as POP, but if what you really want is to set up this account as IMAP, it seems to me that what you should do is fix and/or understand that instead...
Anyway, assuming the account is actually supposed to work using POP as well and that it has been configured correctly, go to Apple Menu > System Preferences > Network, choose Network Port Configurations from the Show popup menu, and make sure that the configuration used to connect to Internet appears at the top of the list.
Also, try using a different method to connect to Internet, if possible, or connecting the computer to Internet as directly as possible, i.e. bypassing any routers that might be present, using an ethernet cable instead of wireless, etc., and see whether that makes a difference.

  • How to get a POP account to mark emails on your mac as viewed when you view them on your iPhone

I have a private pop account and it is a hassle for me to constantly view the same email on my mac that i just viewed on my iphone to remove the "unviewed dot." If i view them on my mac it removes the dot from my iphone, ipad and itouch but not vise versa.  Please help

You can't do what you want to do - it is a limitation of POP servers which were built for a different era. The old model of email was that we downloaded the mail from our server to our computer and our computer either deleted the mail from the server or left it there. The email software on our computer provides the intelligence - it knows what messages on the POP server are new and need to be downloaded and which have already been downloaded but permitted to remain on the server.
This system works perfectly when we are using only one computer to read our mail. Add another computer to the mix and the flaw appears - that second computer doesn't know what's new and what's already been downloaded and read.
You can configure your iOS devices to automatically delete email that's been read (Settings>Mail, Contacts,Calendars then select your account and choose the Advanced button) but if you do this you'll have to forward yourself any email you get on your device that you'd want to see later on your computer.

  • What's the best option for emailing?

    Hello all,
I'm new to Compressor. I've listened to the excellent Lynda.com tutorials by Larry Jordan but am having trouble applying it to my situation.
I want to email a 10-minute movie made in Final Cut Pro that has a file size of about 460MB. I guess the maximum file size I email should be about 2–3MB. I've tried the option Larry recommends for email using the Settings path: Web > Download > QuickTime 7 compatible > H.264 300kbps
But this makes a movie of about 15MB, way too big for email.
I often get very good quality movies emailed to me that are about 1MB and would like to be able to email my clients a similar quality and file size. The ones I get are often professionally-made ads and appear on my screen quite large (i.e the viewing area).
Can anyone suggest the way I can do this? A path would be great.
    Many thanks,
    Andrew

If your sending the video to a select few you could have them download the video directly from your computer.
Zip your video file--->Place that file in your Home--->Site folder.
Open System Preferences--->Sharing--->check the box Web Sharing.
Copy the link under Your personal website: Looks something like this,
    http://c-67-000-000-169.hsd1.co.comblast.net/~davidbrewer/
Add the zip file name to the end of the URL.
    http://c-67-000-241-169.hsd1.co.comblast.net/~davidbrewer/test_video.mov.zip
Email the URL to whom ever you want to send the video too... When they click on the link, the zip file will download to their computer. Even works for Windows computers.
Make sure your computer running. Turn off web sharing when everyone has downloaded the video. Beats uploading to a server. If you have a fast internet connect (I do)... You can build web pages to be severed from your computer. I use this method (embedded video in a web page) so my friends can see my latest work. You don't have to embed the video in a web page. You can just add my_video.mov to the above URL and the video will open in Safari.

  • Edge email not working POP account

any ideas on why email is kicking out and unable to send on edge network and only on my wifi network? Everything was fine prior to upgrade, now getting error when on edge network and unable to connect to server.
settings for my outgoing pop account:
    optional user name (left blank)
    optiona password (left blank)
    outgoing:
    advanced:use ssl off
    port 587

I have 2 Iphones. One is working great sending and receiving both on EDGE and WiFi. It is attached to a IMac G5. The other phone assigned to my partner is receiving on EDGE and WiFi, but won't send on EDGE only on Wifi. Says the server failed. My partners Iphone is connected to a old Mac computer that does not have USB 2 and the synching is very sketchy, so we are upgrading her. Could the problem be that due to the phone not synching it is not picking up the right settings? Help? Her Iphone internal setting are set up exactly like mine as is her computer same as mine. Only difference is her computer does not have the required USB2 that it needs for proper synching. Help someone?

  • Using iOS 8.1, can I still use pop account for email instead of imap

UUsing iOS 8.1 on iPhone 4. Can I still use pop account for my email instead of IMAP. Don't like all my email on mail server

MMy biggest problem is both iPhone and iPad when I set up email account uses IMAP automatically. So I really have no choice. Since IMAP doesnot allow downloading email to device, I have to leave all restates on mail server. This really concerns me.

  • Multiple POP accounts in Safari

I want to switch to Safari as my mail program but I have multiple POP accounts.
Each email has its own password. How can I get them all onto Safari?
It keeps telling me a already have a POP account when I try to enter another email address.
    Thanks.

    Hi Stacey,
I have multiple POP accounts in Apple's Mail program and each one works fine. So I'm not quite sure what is happening when you enter additional data for a new account.
To create a new account you select the + sign in the accounts tab in Mail's preferences. Once you do this, it will display a blank sheet for you to fill in your data for the next account. The data for the new account should be unique and match the account information set up with your ISP. The e-mail address cannot be duplicated. In other words, you can't have the same e-mail address for multiple accounts, even if the password is different.

  • HT201320 data usage for pop3 or exchange email settings

what email type uses the least amount of data on the iphone 5 pop3 or microsoft exchange ?
phone checks for emails every hour.
only have 1gb data usage per month.

You could try disabling IMAP on your email client website and then adding a POP account for your email on your phone. I know GMAIL allows you to disable IMAP on the website.

  • Routing POP account through .Mac e-mail

    Hello,
I recently posted a topic regarding how to keep my POP mailboxes identical on both my Mac Pro and iBook. Dissapointingly I found out that this is not possible, and the cloesest thing I could get to this would be to use the Mail preferance "Remove from server when moved from inbox". So my question is...I came up with a wild idea that I may be able to set up my ISP POP account to automatically foward all messages to my .Mac account. This would solve my problem because .Mac accounts (to my knowledge) are set up as IMAP (or something like it) which would allow me to sync both computers. If I were able to do this it would help me accomplish what I'd like to do, which is keep both computers up to date with current inboxes AS WELL AS what has been deleted on a certain computer. Any one have any input on how I might be able to go about doing this? Any help would be much appreciated. Thanks for your time!

Having your .Mac account check your POP account (which is available via webmail access for your .Mac account preferences) or setting up your POP account to forward all received messages to your .Mac account would solve the problem.
A .Mac type account with Mail is really an IMAP account and behaves in the same way.
You can create/access a .Mac account as a .Mac, IMAP or POP account with Mail and create/access the account as an IMAP or POP account with other email clients on your Mac or on a Windows PC.
I access my .Mac account as a .Mac type account with Mail and as an IMAP account with Outlook on my Windows PC at work and all server stored mailboxes are kept synchronized on both computers without having to do anything special.
This is the benefit of an IMAP account - accessing the same account with an email client on different computers.

  • POP account suddenly stopped receiving mail

Suddenly one of my POP accounts stopped receiving email on my iMac. The same account with the same settings continues to receive as it should on my MacBook Pro, which suggests there is something wrong on the iMac. I've reentered the password several times, deleted the Keychain entry. Nothing seems to work. This account was working fine then all of a sudden demanded a password and refused to function.
Other accounts, even with the same ISP, work properly on both machines.

  • How to move/copy the pst POP account to IMAP account directly.

    Hi,
We are using POP account for our email communication.Due to issues in POP account,we are planning to use IMAP for downloading the emails and also for synchronization with mobile devices.
Please let me know how to copy the pst file of POP account to IMAP account.
Is there any possibility available of copying /Moving PST pop account to IMAP account directly.
    Your support is highly appreciated.
    Regards
    Pradeep.R

    Hi Pradeep.R,
We cannot move an existing POP3 account directly to an IMAP account. To do this, you should first remove your current POP3 account, then add your IMAP account into Outlook client. After this, transfer your current mails, which you downloaded
via POP3 to your IMAP account.
You should contact your email service provider for the correct IMAP account settings.
To transfer your data, simply select the messages or folders in the existing .pst file, then drag and drop them into your current IMAP account.
    Hope this helps.

  • Syncing other calendar from pop account

Hi, Is it possible to sync my calendar from outlook from my other pop account w/o having to have my laptop always on?

I am not sure what you are trying to ask. A pop account is for email only. There is no calendar.

  • What constitutes "POP" Mail?

Dumb question I know. But I am a computer virgin and am in need of help setting up my mail. I have no idea what IMAP, POP, or UNIX is and who runs what. Do the free email sites run any of these?

A really good thing about the internet is a vast array of information available about any given subject with usually more information available for the asking with a search than you may care to know.
Do a Google search with POP and then IMAP with plenty of information provided about each protocol and the differences.
UNIX is not an email account type. Apple's operating system - OS X, is based on UNIX.
The Mail application is called an email client and supports the following account types:
.Mac - Apple is also an email account provider with a .Mac account that also includes a number of other available features but is not free. With a new Mac purchase you have access to a free .Mac trial account which is good for 60 days and if you decide you like the features, a .Mac account costs $99/yr.
A .Mac type account is really an IMAP account and behaves in the same way.
    IMAP
    POP
    Exchange
You can access a .Mac account as a .Mac, IMAP or POP account with the Mail application or as an IMAP or POP account with another email client such as the Mail application on your Mac or on another computer.
I believe there are a few free email accounts that you can access as a POP account but not many.
Yahoo is also an email account provider but Yahoo prevents accessing a free Yahoo account with an email client such as the Mail application. You can access a free Yahoo account via what is called webmail access using a web browser to access the account and to send messages. Apple's Safari is a web browser. With a webmail access only account provides for accessing the account with any web browser on any computer with internet access.
Yahoo also provides what is called a Yahoo Mail Plus or paid account which can be accessed with the Mail application and with other email clients such as the Mail application as a POP account and a paid Yahoo account costs only $19.95/yr. You can also access a paid Yahoo account via webmail using a browser.
I'm not aware of any free email services that offer IMAP account access.
Google is also an email account provider with what is called a Gmail account which is free and can be accessed with the Mail application and with other email clients such as the Mail application as a POP account.
Your internet service provider that you are using to connect to the internet also provides you email account access as part of their service. Most internet service providers provide and support a POP account.

  • Help needed to set up a POP account for mail on iPhone5

My iPhone 4 email account works fine set up as POP.
On the 5 I can only set up a mail account as LMAP.
Any way to set up a POP account (bellsouth.net email)?

  • Why don't my sent items sync to my iphone from mail "pop" account?

I have the same POP account on mail and my iphone and have itunes set to sync the account. it seems like the only folder that synched was the inbox. I want to be able to sync my account and have sent emails on both mail and my iphone. I send a lot of file attachments for work and it would be great to have the sent emails on my iphone in case I need to resend that attachment if I am not in the office provided I synched my iphone with my computer before I leave the office... any thoughts... I went down the IMAP road and the problem is the email server we are using online doesn't have enough storage to keep all the emails on the server.

Not possible with a POP account.
The email account sync process with iTunes syncs (or transfers) email account setup information for select accounts only from your computer to the iPhone. This does not not involve messages.
The reason the account's Inbox mailbox seemed to sync is because received messages with a POP account are the only server stored messages and if not removed from the server when downloaded by one email client can be downloaded from the server by another - in this case the iPhone.
If you want Sent messages kept synchronized between your computer's email client and the iPhone's email client, you MUST use an IMAP account for this purpose.
