What is Premiere's Preview Codec? (CS4)

Is there a way to convert your source video to Premiere's preview file format/s, so that it never has to be preview-rendered? (until you add effects)
Thanks.
Update: by the way, I just read an article on Ars Technica (tech website), that said this: "Now that you have captured the footage, synchronized the sound, and  logged the clips into folders, convert the project to the  post-production format. Most editing software will have a function  called migrate or convert project. You will be  prompted to select the new format, or define a custom format. Once you  start this process you'll usually have to wait a very long time,  depending on the complexity of the project and the format you've picked.  It might last a few hours or a few days"
I can't figure out if PPro CS4 actually has a feature that prepares all your footage for you... (the article wasn't being specific about which apps exactly could do that)

It is preferable to edit natively.  ie edit what you shoot in a matching preset.
Tell us what you shoot and also tell us what you generally export to (ie for what purpose, TV, Youtube, DVD, etc...)
Someone will advise a decent workflow. (Why am I sure you are going to say AVCHD)
BTW - it is often said that SD DV was the easiest workflow for Premiere ( and that is correct).  Shoot miniDV and import it into a DV Preset.
Problem is . HD made this all a different ball game.
Converting Source material so one can edit it would be a real painful workflow  unless you really have to because of  your system and hardware limitations.

  • CS4 - Video Preview Codec

I'm a little confused, when creating a video project file, I'm given the choice of a video preview codec, is this just soemthing to allow the video preview to be played back steadily?
Also will this effect my final render? Or will it change if I choose to render with a different codec.
And finally what do you reccomend I select as my video preview codec for working with 720p footage?

Sorry i don't really understand, the video I'm editing is a 720p WMV file, is that right?
I've imported into a poject file with the video preview codec set to 'uncompressed'

  • No preview codec, crashing on start up, no audio with black magic, asking for serials

    Hello,
I have 4 issues with Premiere CC. At work we have a school license of some sort, what I know we got a special design one from the  sales team (I might be wrong).
The problems we have runned into are:
    1. We students try to open a project they been working on a error screen popps up and says something like "No preview codec could be associated with this sequence...."
I think this happens when students have merged audio and video toghether.
    2. I got some help from the tech support and they made some changes in the libiry in one of the editing rooms computers and reinstalled premiere Pro CC.
It seemed as everything was working until I opened premiere CC the day after, and it asks me for a serial key. I tried putting in the serials we got and non of them worked.
I also tried logging on to the account we have and it still asks me for the serials. And when I try starting in in trail mode I can't playback anything.
    3. In another editing room Premiere was crashing on start up, so I was told by the tech support to uninstall all adobe softwares and update my mac OsX and then reinstall the softwares needed. It worked but if i save projects and try to open them up Premiere CC craches.
    4. On computers using black magic deck link I can't get audio out from premiere pro.
I would really appreicate if I could get some more support.
    Thank You

    Hello again,
So the sound issue is solved, so for other users with the same problem I will write down my way of making it work.
I read some time ago that someone made it work by starting AE and in AE more choices were avalible in the audio prefrences, but this didn't work for me but it might for some, thats why I write it here.
I took this a step futher and I opened up Audition CC, and in Audition CC the sound worked just fine and it was automatically set to black magic.
After I had open Audition CC I was then able  to select Premiere Pro 7.0 as the sound output in the Apple system settings sound prefrences.
Then the sound worked fine in AE and PP. Should also note that when I did it as said in the manual I didn't get it to work.
The preview preset issue is some what solved, I reinstalled premiere and upgrade my OSX as written above. First time I installed Creative Cloud I did it from a build from a hardrive I think that some how made it so creative cloud could not reach premiere correctly???
Although I still have the problem with serial numbers sometimes and I have to be logged on wich is don't work if i try to log on with the account on two or more computers.. Even thou we have a school license, so I still appreciate all help I can get with this.
I will also add that I heard that strange things can happen if users install apples latest ProApp QuickTime Codec 1.0.4 so watch out for that one at the moment, I sure adobe will fix this soon as well

  • Premiere Pro & Encore Errors - CS4 / CS5 Side-By-Side Install

    Hello, all.
I am trying to use CS Production Premium CS4 and CS5 together on the same machine.  I have been getting some really crazy errors and happenings lately on Premiere Pro (CS4) and Encore (both CS4 & CS5).  In another forum in Creative Cow, someone mentioned that CS4 and CS5 should not live on the same partition, and that may be causing my problems.  You can view that thread here: http://forums.creativecow.net/thread/3/908105.
    The long and short:
I have had CS4 installed for a while on my machine (see specs in the signature line), and installed CS5 alongside using all the default install values.
Taking the troubled applications one at a time, here are some errors I am encountering:
    PREMIERE PRO CS4
Upon launch, the following message appears:
This is what prompted someone to note that CS4 & CS5 should not live on the same partition.  I HAVE SINCE UNINSTALLED CS5 and the error still persists.
    ENCORE CS4
Upon launch, it automatcially crashes and the Windows error messages pop up:
I HAVE SINCE UNINSTALLED CS5 and the error still persists.
    ENCORE CS5:
Shorter DVDs with simple timelines seem to transcode and burn just fine.  However, with longer timelines or more complex projects, it returns the following errors:
A detailed view of the error message is below:
I have not been able to test this after the uninstall of CS5, but I can only assume that it still has this issue.
As far as I can tell, Premiere Pro CS5 works just fine.
In addition to the previous errors, After Effects and Premiere Pro CS5 also have trouble rendering to networked locations (i.e.--mapped drives). The renders fail immediately with "unknown errors".  I am not sure if this has something to do with the side-by-side configuration or not, but it is another issue that has been problematic.  The CS4 versions can render to any location with no problems.
Any guidance on how to get CS4 and CS5 to coexist will be greatly appreciated!  I do need both versions for various reasons, so getting rid of one is not an option (and as the uninstall of CS5 has proven, not effective).
    Thank you!

  • What is Premiere pro CC?

I just got CS6 Cloud in April,
Sorry for this dumb question, I have not found a satisfactory answer anywhere so I'm asking...
    What is Premiere CC?
    is it CS6 cloud?
    is it a new version?
What about CS6? Is it going to stay?
    When was CC released?
    Was it announced? and when?
Should I switch to CC and abandon CS6?
If you compared what do you think ?
    Thanks!
    Serge

Announced May 6 Cloud Only Notice http://forums.adobe.com/thread/1205851
Yes it is a new version... CS6 will stay, IF you bought the perpetual license version (about $800 one time payment)
CC stops working if you stop paying
DO NOT delete CS6, since the Cloud does not include Encore, you must use Encore CS6 to write DVD or BluRay

  • What does it mean "(Preview)"?

What does it mean "(Preview)"? Is it a limited feature app? Does it expire and become unusable? Is there a non-Preview/Full version? Is this a trial edition?

Basically it means, < 1.0. It is not trial limited and it will not time

  • What is the fastest video codec to render in premiere?

I'm looking/curious for the type of video codec that premiere renders fastest. Is it, h.264, .mov, .avi, etc...??
I export alot from After FX and i need to cut down on premiere rendering time, so i want to export the video that will render fast through premiere.
My computer is too slow to do dynamic link.
What type of video does premiere render that fastest?

Your Project setting is usually "native".  eg P2 mxf, HDV, DV etc... f it matches your source.
ie. match your project to your source and then you are basically "native"
If you import a file of the same type...you are native.
Rendering depends on hardware, effects etc....
CS5 and MPE now provides a realtime edit experience in the timeline without rendering previews (for many fx.)
All exports to a final movie  require "Rendering".  The speed of that depends on the hardware and effects etc but the quickest is usually if you are rendering a movie that matches your Project.
BTW: you need to think about what the final use of the movie is.  That determines what you will export.  It may not be the fastest.

  • What is the best intermediate codec in Premiere CS5?

I have recently transitioned from using FinalCut to Premiere Pro CS5. Previously, I would exort to Apple prores from FinalCut as an intermediate codec for an uncompressed file. I was wondering if Adobe has an  intermediate codec equivelant to Apple Prores, or if I should just use the prores codec in Adobe Premiere Pro ?????
    help! thanks!

Got it. Uncompressed will obviously give you the best quality in the shortest amount of time and be the most flexible, but will occupy the most space. Depending on the duration of your edit, that could be a pretty sizable file. Depending on your needs and the platform you're using (Mac, from what I gather), there are some other options that are minimally or losslessly compressed.
On a PC, you could look into Lagarith or Ut Video Codec--both are free, but PC only. On a Mac, you might consider the Avid DNxHD QuickTime codecs, which are also free, and have the added benefit of being cross-platform. If you have FCP on your Mac, ProRes would be a viable choice, and is at least readable on a PC. Some folks use QuickTime PNG, since that would also be available cross-platform and will already be included once you've installed QuickTime.
    You've got choices

  • What AME export settings do you recommend for preview? CS4

I've got about 30 minutes with lots of graphics. I just want to make sure it flows well as a whole before exporting finals to H.264 and MPEG2-DVD. In other words, I want FAST!
    Thanks.

    Paul,
Sonicfire Pro has a media player embedded. This allows one to have both the Video and the Audio from the PrPro Project, so that they can play that, and make changes to the SmartSound music, i.e. Scoring.
As nothing really exists in PrPro, until one does an Export, there is not a way to get, say a Clip in the Source Monitor into Sonicfire. Now, let's take an example, where you have used the Source Monitor to Trim a Clip. You have an Instance of it on the Timeline, with those In & Out Points set. It could be alone, or somewhere between other Clips. As there are a few more steps with the latter, we'll choose that - the Instance of the Clip is between other Clips, but all you want to do is add music, from Sonicfire Pro/SmartSound to THAT Clip.
In PrPro, set the WAB (Work Area Bar) over that Clip, and then Export. For my SD Projects, I just use DV-AVI, and make sure that Recompress is unchecked.
Import that DV-AVI into Sonicfire Pro, and it will show up in the player.
Play that file, to get the feel, if you have not done so, in PrPro.
Select the SmartSound composition and drag it to the Sonicfire Pro Timeline.
If it's multi-track, you will have a ton of options on what you can do with that composition.
Adjust the Duration of the music to match the AV file.
Edit that music in Sonicfire Pro.
    Export as PCM/WAV @ 48KHz 16-bit.
Import that PCM/WAV into PrPro and position it on an Audio Track with the proper channel-count, that matches your Clip.
Throw away the DV-AVI "reference file," when you are satisfied.
There are several tutorials on the Sonicfire Pro - Scoring Edition, that might be useful in explaining how the above is done, plus all of the power available. If you have not seen them, I strongly suggest that you do, as they will give you a lot of ideas on using Sonicfire Pro.
Good luck, and hope that helps,
    Hunt

  • Premiere Pro/Media Encoder CS4 exports 0 KB movie, any solution?

I have a (simple) project in Adobe Premiere Pro CS4 4.2.1 with two video files (same source/codec) and one audio file. The video file starts a few seconds before the audio file starts. There are no transitions and effects, besides filling the left audio channel. However, the problem is that all my attempts at exporting this project to a video file with h.264/aac, PAL widescreen, have been futile.
The Adobe Media Encoder CS4 4.2.0 takes a considerable amount of time (~4.5 hours) and generates files (m4v & aac) of an appropriate size (~2.5 GB), but deletes those files as soon as it is finished with encoding. This leaves me with an empty y.mp4 of exactly 0 KB.
I have fully updated both Premiere Pro and Media Encoder. My system is a MacBook with an Intel 2.4GHz, 4GB RAM, running Mac OS 10.6.
Is there any known solution for this problem?

    ===== END LOG =====

    Welcome to the forum.
    First, a few questions:
1.) What is the source footage's format/CODEC (both your Video and your Audio)?
2.) Can you tell us about the I/O sub-system on your MB, i.e. your HDD's, their size, speed, free space (very important) and how you have them allocated?
3.) Can you Export to another muxed format, as a test?
4.) Can you Export as non-muxed (Multiplexing set to None) and get two usable elemental/elementary streams? Do each play fine? Again, this is just a test.
As you observe, the two streams are first created, and then when complete, they are muxed into one file with both the Audio and Video stream. Something is causing the muxing to not complete. This could be an issue directly with AME, or perhaps with your H.264 CODEC, or something like free space on your target HDD.
    Good luck,

  • Premiere CS5 and codecs

I have a problem with Premiere CS5 (And all other video software for that matter) and the supported video formats.
What I did was, I installed the Master Collection trial version and when I actually purchased the software I entered the serial and done!...  I thought...
I know that in the trial version a lot of the codecs are blocked so I thought something might have gone wrong there so when I received the actual Discs I tried reinstalling Premiere but with the same result:
I wanted to import an IMX 625/50 .mov file but it just wouldn't work, eventhough that should be supported as far as I can tell. Also my export format list was very limited to pretty much the standard codecs from what I can see. So after a bit of trying and reinstalling etc. I installed Final Cut Pro 2 and everything is running fine now, with big lists of export and import possibillities in all the adobe video editing software.
So the question is: Did I miss something when upgrading from the trial version to the full version

Depending on the particular FLV files, they should Import into CS5.
I think that capability was added with the last update of CS4 - CS4.2.1. Before that, one needed something like the Moyea FLV Importer for PrPro, which was a plug-in.
Now, the CODEC used in the FLV might/might not be an issue. I do not know the exact Flash CODEC's that will function properly, but it seems that Todd commented on that in an earlier thread here.
In a worst-case scenario, Moyea does have various Flash utilities and programs, and they might help, if some of your FLV's do not work properly.
Remember, FLV is a delivery format, and is designed primarily for streaming Web content. A great deal of the quality will have been squeezed out of the file, but if the FLV's are all that you have to work with, you are stuck on the quality issue.
Good luck, and let us know what you find out, regarding the various Flash CODEC's and CS5.

  • Send to Premiere Pro - Which codec?

I tested ingesting some sample footage, copying the original footage to a folder, then also two transcodes, ProRes 422 and Prores Proxy each to their own folders.
I then sent the project to Premiere Pro.
Is there some rule about which codec Premiere Pro will link to?  Is it the order that the transcodes are queued, or the original media or what?
The Premiere Pro project I ended up with had mixed codec types.  Some were native, some were ProRes 422 andsome were Proxy, which is not quite what I'd hoped.
If I know what the rules are I guess I can follow them, but I can't find where these are written down.
    Thanks.

I did the test again with multiples cards and different transcode order (copy / mxf / prores, mxf / copy / prores, prores / mxf / copy) and I did end up each time with my first choice into the prelude project.
I'm using Prelude 1.0.2 and Adobe Media Encoder 6.0.2 on Mac OS 10.8.1
I don't know if this has anything to do with it but I allways launch AME before starting ingest (not letting prelude launch it by itself).

  • Premiere and After Effects CS4 Dynamic Link "glitches"

I am no longer able to use dynamic link when I try to link to multiple AE compositions from Premiere.
What happens is, when playing the sequence back in premiere, there are random frames in the dynamic link clip that are out of order. For example if I have two compositions, A and B, each 1 second, and they are in my Premiere project, the playback might do something crazy like this:
    Should be (frames):
    AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAABBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBB
    Really:
    AAABAAAAAAAAAABBAAAAAAAABBABABABABBBBBBBBBBBBBBB
I'm not sure if there is any pattern to it, but dynamic link is just not working. I thought this might be a preview issue, so I tried rendering it and I got the same incorrect sequence as the preview. I've tried things like removing and adding the compositions again, or deleting the media cache, but this always randomly comes up.
My only option has been to export in AE (and when doing uncompressed that can use a lot of disk space).
Any ideas as to how to solve this? Or is dynamic link just a broken feature?

Well that was stupid. I had to rename the compositions (they were created from Premiere so the automatic names had a trailing number). Then I had to reimport the comps and place them over the old broken ones (clearing the cache didn't seem to help with those).
After replacing with comps without numbers and clearing all of the caches, it seems to be working so far.
I can't believe this bug even exists. Especially when the "Replace with After Effects composition" will repro the bugs. Sounds like poor testing on Adobe's part.
At the very least this should be documented somewhere officially. I was able to find this post on the web after looking up this specific issue: http://www.digitalrebellion.com/blog/posts/adobe_dynamic_link_troubleshooting.html
