What is Quicktime 7.0.2.a38?

I had version 6.5 of Quicktime for Windows installed that worked fine. I then updated to version 7.0.2, but this made other software that used Quicktime to crash (i.e. Pinnacle Liquid Edition). So I went back to version 6.5.
I was then advised to try 7.0.2.a38, and given a link to download. This now works fine, but what is this version because it does not appear to be the latest from the Apple site? The update button is also greyed out, why?

Thanks for the reply, but I had installed Quicktime 7.0.2.120 from the Apple site. It is that version that gave me (and others) the problems.
I use Pinnacle/Avid's Liquid Edition editing software, and it crashes every time I use the Quicktime export/import option. This does not happen with version 6.5 or 7.0.2a38.
I have reported this to Pinnacle's support team, and there is a thread running on the Pinnacle site about this, which it seems everyone is experiencing, read by 700 people at the last count.
So I think that this must be an Apple issue to solve perhaps?

  • What is Quicktime good for, absolutly nothing !

I have approx 30 vidio files on my computer, which I would like to transfeer to my ipod. Quicktime is not capable of handling a single one of them. They are in various formats, mostly Windows Media (TM). I cannot get a single vidio file to opperate with quicktime. That is a horrable recomindation for Quicktime !!!
In order to use Quicktime, it would appear that I need another program to first transulate the vidio files into a format which Quick time can recognise.
    What program would that be?

QuickTime can't convert what it can't play. Windows Media files are one of the formats.
Search for third party software or converter apps that can export to the iPod settings. About 100 of them and most are free.
Check the iPod discussions for some examples.

  • What is quicktime error -50?

I have been editing in FCPX on both my Macbook Pro and my iMac. I have been having problems with both when exporting video. At the end it fails and I get an error message. It reads "Quicktime Error: -50". Does anyone else know what this is?
It has happened when exporting both in FCPX, or in compressor, or the share monitor. It does not happen when I'm simply exporting the media, but it almost always happens when I export as any different format. It particularly likes to do this when I "share" to Vimeo.

I just got this error trying to render H.264 format video files in compressor 4, and I know normally Compressor just hangs up and I have to force it to quit when I do that. It clearly doesn't like compressing compressed H.264 format files (I usually just convert to either ProRes or ProRes Proxy before sending to compressor now). Though I just bought a 12 core Mac Pro, this accepted the H.264 and started, probably because it had the power to get passed some labour intensive task my 8 core couldn't manage. Though it still didn't render them and just resulted in a -50 quicktime error message after a few minutes....
...anyway, so I doubt it's a drive error, and I doubt it's corrupt file issues, probably something to do with codec incompatibilty I would have thought... and if you are using h.264 that might well be the problem, though other formats probably could cause a similar issue. If you want smaller files for upload then maybe try ProResProxy, I've never had a problem with that, though that can still be quite large for some uploads.
..anyway, hope my experience may help someone in someway!

  • What is QuickTime error -1856

Over the weekend, iDVD5 crashed on my system and since then a number of QuickTime based apps aren't working quite right, including iTunes and WireTap Pro.
QuickTime Player itself (7.0) gives this message on startup -
QuickTime cannot open the file: "trampoline.mov"
    an unknown error occurred (-1856)
Any ideas what this means? (Other than that trampoline.mov is missing ...)

No, I was aware of that trick, but there was much more that was awry. All of the QuickTime-based apps on my system were affected, and some wouldn't even run anymore. The iTunes UI was corrupted, iDVD had no sound, WireTap showed weird audio settings and failed to capture, Final Cut wouldn't even start ...
Reimaging the HD was the right thing to do, and everything is working fine again.

  • What is quicktime screen recording default save location?

I made a screen recording in Quicktime (OS X 10.8), and now I can't figure out where it saved the file.  Yes I know (now) that I could have changed the save location/name in the options before recording, but I didn't.  I just recorded.  Now I'm unable to locate where the actual file is.
The File menu doesn't have any Save options, so I can't save it again.  I have duplicated it, but now I just have a copy that I likewise do not know the location of.
Finder->All My Files doesn't show it.
Quicktime Help Center tells me how to record, and that I can change the save location in options, but it doesn't say where the default save location is.

Nice!  I found my own answer.  There's much I think and feel about this issue that I'm keeping to myself, but you can draw your own conclusions about usability.
Despite there being no Save, Save As..., etc. options in the File menu for Quicktime (with this recently recorded movie as the active window), the file was not yet saved.
To save the file, one must attempt to close the recorded movie window.  Then a file save dialog appears.  *boggle*

  • What does this quicktime icon mean? Mysterious connection to audio preview in CS3

Can anybody tell me what this quicktime icon means in relation to imported .mov footage?
I'm using AfterEffects CS3, and working to solve an annoying mystery related to audio in RAM previews. I've got a workaround, but would love to get to the root of the matter.
In older projects, audio previews just fine. In recent projects, I can't get audio to work during RAM previews. I can hear scrubbed audio, and audio renders fine from the queue, but can't hear it during RAM previews. I'm working on an animation project.  Audio in RAM preview is crucial, dammit! YES, audio is enabled in the preview control preferences...
If I import an older AE project with working audio - PRESTO! Audio preview works fine again. WHY?
I've narrowed things down - the imported project will do the trick even if it contains noting but this (see icon) certain, earlier QT.mov file - which, ironically, has no audio of it's own.
I suspect the issue may be a Quicktime version or update version quirk. Probably solved if I updated my software to CS5, but can't afford that just now. ARGH.
    Any ideas? Thank you!

Audio is in AIFF format, and was created in the same time period and format as earlier projects, where it previewed just fine.
Photoshop files do not have the Quicktime icon, my workaround solution does.
I can get RAM audio preview working again -  IF I import an additional, older AE project from a time (June 2011) when audio preview was still working as expected. I experimented with those earlier AE projects, deleting various files until I narrowed it down to the following:
As long as the imported project includes a movie file with that goofy quicktime icon, audio RAM preview works. If not, no dice. The movie file in question is a tiny quicktime movie animation generated by AfterEffects (lossless, best settings) in the course of the previous project. It has no audio of its own.
So I have a workaround, but I'm curious. Why doesn't my audio RAM preview work in current projects, and what is it about this little, goofy-icon QT movie file that gets it working again?

  • No audio on Leopard after updating to Quicktime 7.6.6 (or was it 10.5.8...)

Subject says it all. In more detail: after having, in quick succession (mistake number 1) updated the OS to 10.5.8 (from 10.5.6) and iTunes to 9.1 (can't recall from what), and lastly Quicktime to 7.6.6 (cannot recall from what), the Quicktime player can no longer access my audio card. However, all other audio apps including browsers, Logic, iTunes, whatever - all can access the audio card (HDSPe from RME). And Quicktime will send audio correctly via USB and to the internal speakers (MacPro early 2008).
My attempts to roll back to QT 7.5.5 produce the same result. Since these three updates all took place in quick succession, and since I didn't have any reason to check the Quicktime Player before a few days later, only then discovering that it didn't work, I cannot know if it was the Quicktime update or even the OS update to 10.5.8 that went wrong.
Have done usual things, like reinstalling (QT, but not the whole OS), trashing relevant prefs files, still the problem does not go away.
Anybody know what this is all about?

    Still no fix.
Two things were changed, imemdiately before noticing that Quicktime Player no longer plays .mov files:
    1. OS X was updated to 10.5.8, form 10.5.6
    2. Quicktime was updated, the version changing from from whatever is installed by default in OS X 10.5.6 to Quicktime 7.6.6
Since then, for instance using this url (http://www.apple.com/quicktime/qtv/specialevent0110/) with several Quicktime movies on the Apple web, the video plays but no audio is heard on my audio card, which works for everything else on the system. Thus DVD movies work, mpg files work, .mov files in applications other than Quicktime Player, all audio works. Playing the clips on the url above works with audio as well but only when audio is sent to the internal speaker in the MacPro, or line out. The audio card is a stock RME HDSPe AES, running to an Aurora 16, from there to the world.
What got broken? Everything indicates it is an Apple software fault...

  • Export to Quicktime Movie Results in Aspect Ratio Distortion

All of my original footage was shot in miniDV. I have created a sequence with the following settings:
    Frame size: 720 x 480
    Compressor: DV/DVCPRO - NTSC
Pixel Aspect: NTSC - CCIR 601
    Vid rate: 29.97 fps
Ultimately the sequence needs to go to DVD with a standard 4:3 aspect ratio. To export, I am using:
File > Export > QuickTime Movie...
I have tried using several different settings including:
Apple Pro Res 422 NTSC 48 kHz
Apple Pro Res 422 NTSC (HQ) 48 kHz
    Apple Pro Res 960x720 30p 48 kHz
    DV NTSC 48 kHz
    etc...
All settings yield the same result: a slightly squeezed aspect ratio. At first, I thought that this might simply be the fact that I was playing back files in QuickTime which uses square pixels I believe. But in both DVD Studio Pro and iDVD, the simulation shows the same effect. (By the way, Finder's "Get Info" reads the resulting Final Cut Pro Movie File dimensions 720x486.)
I'm fairly new to FCP so I'm hoping there is something obvious that I have missed. Can anyone explain what I need to do to get the video to DVD without a distorted aspect ratio?
(Incidentally, I have managed to export using quicktime conversion with no problem. But I need the export to be a Final Cut Pro Movie File so as to maintain chapter markers, etc.)
    Advice welcome!!!

Hi David, I know this was discussed in you posting already but I just wanted to make sure I had it clear. I have a 4:3 film and I've exported as a quicktime movie with current settings, which should be 4:3 and found that the image when played back in quicktime, looks horizontally stretched. Almost as if quicktime is trying to play it back as a 16:9 image. I think this is the same issue the other fellow was having but I just wanted to be clear. You're saying that the 4:3 image distortion is perfectly normal when played back in quicktime on a computer screen and that the export will look fine when put to DVD or sent to a monitor? I just wanted to make sure because this problem is freaking me out and I don't want to deliver a distorted image to my client. Could you also explain briefly why this happens with quicktime export and not quicktime conversion and what causes quicktime to distort the 4:3 image? Any advice or help would be greatly appreciated.
    Cheers,
    james.

  • What is the best way to work with AVCHD 720 24p footage in FCE4.1?

Hi I have a Panasonic HMC-150 and I've been shooting 720 24p footage at 21 mbps transfer rate.
I was wondering what is the best way to work with this material in FCE 4.1? I see that in the easy set up menu they only have the option of 1440X1080i at 50 or 60 fps or 1920X1080i at 50 or 60 fps.
Also in the rates drop down menu there is only 50 or 29.97.
So I was wondering which is the best choice for 720 24p footage and will it look alright in any of them? Also is it possible to customize these settings?
And finally can you work with faster transfer rates (21mbps) in FCE?

Yikes, this is going to be tricky since FCE does not support native 24p editing.
The work around for some of us is that AVCHD material that is 24p is often recorded to disc at 60i using telecine, in which case it can be editing at 29.97 frames per second, and then detelecined afterward for final export at 23.98 fps. The problem is that I think your camera actually records real 24p - not 24p packed into 60i. When you import the material from the camera what does QuickTime report the framerate as?

  • Quicktime x will not open

I think I have a file association issue. I have a piece of paper and pencil for a quicktime x icon and quicktime will not open. I have tried to look for ways to uninstall and reinstall quicktime x but I am new to the Macbook Pro so I'm not familiar on how to navigate through the more advanced settings. I have looked through forums and could not find what I was looking for. It will not let me click on a file and "open with" quicktime. I click on quicktime in the applications folder and it opens for a second on the dock and then closes out. Please help me out. I have been using DivX instead of quicktime but I like the format of quicktime better.
    Thanks, Pam

Another thing i have found in regards to this issue and quicktime is.
When you join two clips that have both been encoded with handbrake at apple tv setting. So they both have aac as first track and ac3 as second. When they are joined together and then saved as a .mov file (so without exporting). The resulting file will play fine in itunes and quicktime, but on the apple tv, at the point where the second clip has been joined on, apple tv looses the audio.
The audio is playing as ac3 on the first clip.
Also to note when played in itunes, with joined clips you dont have the option to select between ac3 and just aac. But when playing the clip on appletv my av unit definitely shows the first clip as playing in ac3.
Any ideas as to what the story is?
What is quicktime doing when it joins the two clips?

  • Quicktime X ac3 + ACC issue

    Hi all,
I've been slowly but surely trying to get all of my DVD's into itunes over the past few years and until everything was working wonderfully. I've been encoding for Apple TV with HB. (i'm only backing up movies which i own on DVD, which is legal. just wanted to get that out of the way).
Since the upgrade to SL I've noticed that Quicktime X will not open m4v files that have both ac3 & AAC audio. these files still playback fine in itunes, on the ATV, and in quicktime 7. I'm just curious if Apple is working on a fix for this issue. I would think they would have had the forethought to build in support for those of us who are specifically backing up their media to work on ATV and in Quicktime.
if their are any workarounds anyone has discovered i'd be happy to hear that as well!
    thanks,

I have created some Keynote Quicktime movies.  When I import them into iMovie, they become too tall and wide to see the pictures.  How can I change the aspect ratio (I want to use 16:9) and/or the height and width of the slides to be seen properly?

  • Quicktime and question marks on web pages

Any time I went to a web page that had a QT in it, it was fine. Now when I go to a webpage I see the QT logo with a question mark in it. What happened!
    Thanks in advance

Regardless of what 'happened', Quicktime with a ? refers to Flash video. No idea why this question seems to get asked several times a day, by which I mean why is it suddenly happening to a lot of users. To rectify it, try this:
These are the downloads and the settings you need in order to view/hear pretty much everything that the net can throw at you: The setup described below has proved repeatedly successful on both PPC and Intel macs, but nothing in life carries a guarantee!
Assuming you already run OS 10.4.9 or above and have Quicktime 7.2, and are using Safari 2 or 3, download and install (or re-install even if you already had them) the latest versions, suitable for your flavor of Mac, of:
    RealPlayer from http://uk.real.com/player/
Flip4Mac WMV Player from http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windowsmedia/player/wmcomponents.mspx (Windows Media Player for the Mac is no longer supported, even by Microsoft)
    Perian from http://perian.org/
    Adobe FlashPlayer from http://www.adobe.com/shockwave/download/download.cgi?P1ProdVersion=ShockwaveFlash
In Quicktime Preferences, under advanced, UNcheck Enable Flash, and under Mime settings/Miscellananeous only check Quicktime HTML (QHTM).
In Macintosh HD/Library/Quicktime/ delete any files relating to DivX (Perian already has them).
Important: Now repair permissions and restart.
The world should now be your oyster!
You should also have the free VLC Player from http://www.videolan.org/ in your armory, as this plays almost anything that DVD Player might not.
