What is Raid 0 Raid 1

i was wondering if any one can help explain about RAID drives? I don't really know anything about it. Pro's / cons? I use final cut pro HD with large DV files and soon to use HD. I know that RAID drives are essential when storing HD files. I'm planning on getting another external hard drive and saw a 1TB drive RAID 1 but don't understand the benefits.
Also I see in the Disk utility that there's a RAID option. Does that mean you can RAID any additional drive / external drvie? any help would be greatful

RAID 0 is striping, which is usually used to read and/or write data more rapidly by reading/writing portions of a file to one disk while writing other portions of the same file to another disk (or other disks).
RAID 1 is mirroring, which means that the same data is written to multiple disks. Typically, the advantage is that the data is redundant and serves as a sort of backup.
There are numerous other RAID schemes, and they all require more than one drive. You can read more about RAID here.

    It is asking me what "raid block size" to use:
    16k
    32k
    64k
    128k
    256k
    The help menu suggests that for the most thruput, a higher number might be best...
    I will be using this raid for DV & HD video with Final cut studio 2 & AFX cs3.
    Not sure which value to use.

    I would not include the OS with your HD & DV storage RAID.
    And Apple RAID keeps improving so that you can use smaller default for non-video or audio applications as in CS3 scratch disks.
    Booting from RAID has limitations and problems, and I would prefer a dedicated fast drive instead, and isolate the system activity as well which also helps.

  • New Disk Setup - 4 SSDs, 3 HDs - what {not} to RAID

    I am building a new machine (a first for me & with 2 years of savings) and will finally have a powerful machine to work (using a 2009 Macbook Pro for 4 years).
    I have purchased the following:
    Samsung 840 Pro SSD- 256GB - 2 nos. (seq. read/write 500+)
    Samsung 840 (nonPro) - 128GB - 2 nos. (seq. read ~500 but write only ~125)
    Seagate 7200rpm HD - 2TB - 3 nos.
    And my plan is to use
    C: > Samsung 840 Pro 256GB : OS and Applications
    D: > Samsung 840 Pro 256GB: Previews and Renders
    E: > Samsung 840 128GB x 2 RAID-0 : Footage
    F: > Seagate 2TB x 2 RAID-0 HDD : Exports and General Personal Files (like Docs, Music)
    G: > Seagate 2TB : Dedicated solely as Backup Drive for crictical data at a given time (taking manual backups on old external drives).
    Can someone please give me feedback on this setup and recommendations on which to use for what all.
    Let me know any input or suggestion you may have like maybe a totally different setup (like all SSDs independent and 3xHDDs as RAID-0).
    I am also particularly looking for suggestions of which ports on my MoBo to connect these to.
    I am using a ASUS P9X79 Pro so have 8 Ports - 2xSATA3 Intel, 2xSATA3 Marvell, 4xSATA2.
    And fyi I am using an Intel i7 3930K, Gigabyte GTX770 4GB and 64GB RAM.

    I don't like RAID 0.  It's just a bad idea for anything that you can't lose.  Fine for things like cache and previews, though.  But you don't have enough drives to go around for that.  The idea is to get the five basic drives in place first - OS/Projects/Cache/Media/Exports - and only once those are in place should you consider making a RAID of any kind.  After those five, you had two left, both smaller SSDs, but not the same model, so it made more sense to get that data security for the Projects, which left one drive.  AE Global Cache is a good use for SSDs.
    The non-Pro 840's may be slower by comparison, but their write performance isn't critical used in the suggested way (and they'll still write faster than a hard drive).

    I've been hearing a lot about setting up Mac Pros/G5's in a "Raid" configuration for better performence an i was wondering what it's all about and how to do it?

    Basically speaking, RAID offered by Mac OS X (Disk Utility) has three distinct, functions…
    1) Large drive sizes. It enables the combination of multiple drives into one large drive. So, if you have 3 x 500GB drive you can combine them into one large 1.5TB drive. This is implemented under a RAID 0 (striping or concatenating) scheme.
    2) Redundancy. By mirroring two or more drives it is possible to have all but one drive sumulaneously fail and still maintain data operation and integrity. So, if you had 3 x 500GB mirrored drives (resulting in a single 500GB drive) all would be identical giving you in effect, 3 original drives. If one or two of those drives failed the reminaing drive(s) would remain in operation. This is implemented under a RAID 1 scheme.
    3) I/O performance gains. By having your data spread over multiple drives each of those drives are able to read and write to those drive independently and concurrently. So, if you had 2 x 500GB drives under a RAID 0 (stripe only - concatenating provides no I/O improvements) half of your data will be on the first drive and the other half on the 2nd drive. For a 100GB file each drive would have 50GB of that file. When it came time to read that file each drive would simultaneously give the 50GB piece it had which would essentially halve read time and the same would apply to the writing of that 100GB file as each drive would only have to write half of the file.
    Under a RAID 1 (mirroring) scheme read speeds would be likewise be improved as you have multiple drives to read from whereas write speed would not change as the same data needs to be written to all drives.
    Please be aware that I/O is not actually improved in multiples as it suggests as there are overheads that are incurred by the RAID controller in managing the RAID implementation. Additionally, under Mac OS X the controller is software based rather than hardware based so there are performance losses there as well. It is possible however that the Mac Pro does have a hardware RAID controller which is implemented as part of the Intel 5000X chipset and Disk Utilty only controls it. Someone who knows more about the Intel 5000X chipset might want to confirm or deny this.
    While you do get across the board performance gains they are minimal, if anything, at best when booting due to large amounts of very small I/O operations. RAID does do best with large file I/O operations.

    Many RAID implementation are in fact a combination of RAID 0 and 1 to combine their effects. So, what you could do with 4 identical 500GB is to create two RAID 1 mirrored pairs, leaving you with 2 x 500GB disks, and then create a RAID 0 stripe those two resulting disks into a single 1TB disk. By doing this you in effect get the redundancy for each member in the stripe and also the combined I/O performance (2x write and 4x read) gains. This particular implementation is a RAID 10 (or 1 + 0) scheme.
    To provide the most optimal RAID implementations is it highly suggested that all drives are the same size, make and model. Additionally, due to the negative effects of RAID, which I'll get into, it is even more highly suggested that you opt for an entrerprise/nearline class drive with higher reliability and lower failure rates. Enterprise class drives are design for high use and RAID implementations. Yes they are more expensive, though often not excessively so, and are sometimes smaller than their consumer/desktop class bretheren but are well worth the difference.
    So what the downside? The largest downside is with RAID 0 striping. With each member/drive you add to a stripe set you add to the likelihood of a catastrophic failure. For instance, if you had a 4 drive RAID 0 stripe the possibilty of a drive failure is 4x that of a single drive. Additionally, if a single drive fails all data is lost as that one drive has a quarter of each file on your system. Now you can see why enterprise class drives are recommended!
    Even if you implemented redundancy through a combined RAID 1 scheme, if there were damage to what was written to disk then all disks are damaged. Remember, with mirroring, what is written to one is written to all drives. RAID 1 really only protects you drive a hardware failure, not a software failure.
    This does sound bad doesn't it. Just remember to keep it in perspective… a failure under RAID is more likely but that does not make it imminent. With a 4 drive stripe and an enterprise class drive with a 1 million hour MTBF that still gives an overall 250,000 hour MTBF. The likelihood of a single failure is still extremely low.
    When you implement RAID schemes how you safeguard your data via clones and backups becomes more of an important issue. Bear in mind that not safeguarding your data with or without RAID is not a wise thing so if you are doing the right thing there's is really nothing extra to do with RAID.
    I clone every day or two and backup weekly. Even without RAID, if I didn't do this a hardware failure would result in data loss so RAID isn't particularly worse than an independent drive setup.

    Would I recommend it. To some yes and others no. It really comes down to how you use your Mac Pro. My suggestion that if you have the drives and the time just give it a go and see how it feels.

    I was looking around and saw a MacPro RAID card on the apple store page it says what it does and stuff, but what is it for? Does it improve your computer ?

    RAID allows you to set up a team of Disk Drives to act as one. There are configurations that provide additional capacity, additional speed, and additional redundancy, as well as combinations. Many common configurations do not requires any special Hardware.
    RAID optimized for speed gets additional speed by overlapping the read of the next block with the data transfer from the previous block. This only provides an improvement in speed when the larger operation is not interrupted by ANY stray reads or writes at other areas of the Disk. Setting up a single RAID for reading and writing data at the same time does NOT provide a measurable speedup.
    Some versions of RAID (e.g., RAID 5) calculate and store check blocks that can provide some redundancy across three or more drives. If one drive fails, the remaining data and the check blocks can be combined to recreate the missing data. This requires that check blocks be calculated and checked as data go by, which requires additional Hardware assistance to be adequately speedy.

    The Apple RAID card is showing signs of advanced age, and has not been updated in quite a while. Many here consider it a poor investment at this time. It limits you to 2.2TB per drive. Its battery has been a source of major problems.
    You can use Disk Utility to create Mirrored RAID, Striped RAID, and JBOD RAID without a need for any card.

    So, basically, you use several physical drive, but your computer treats those as one big drive.
    The main goals are:
    - security: allow to have duplicates of your data, so if one drive fail, you have not lost everything.
    - speed: by writing to different drives, you can speed up the process.
    - convenience: certain cards and modes allow for "hot plug", ie: changing the drives on the fly without turning the computer off.

  • What happened to Raid utility in mavericks?

    I have an early 2008 mac pro with apple's hardware raid card.   After doing Apples "free" upgrade, I no longer have raidutility under utilties...    What happened?
    I'm also stuck in and endless loop of appstore trying to update itunes and hp printer driver...

    Hi Jason,
    I would claim that the RAID Utility is really a System Administrator app, and not a user app.  And with the end of the silver Mac Pro models and Xserve already out of production, the Apple Raid cards appear to be a thing of the past. 
    As I manage 14 Mac Pros, from Early 2008 through Mid 2012 models, I'll have to figure out other ways to perform the mirrored disk function.  I think it will be some kind of cron job that runs rsync to keep pairs of disks synced...
    I've just installed Mavericks on a test Early 2008 Mac Pro, with RAID card, upgrading from OS X 10.6.8.  So far, everything seems to be going pretty well.  Next week's project is to compile Macports, and install our standard set of Unix utilities.  This will likely be a challenge, for such a new OS.

  • Raid ... Exactly what can the RAID do with the TD230

    Hi,
    Have a bunch of TD23013U's and the newer TD23019U's. They both come with RAID, Intel onboard and a LSI9240-8i.
    Q: Out of the box, can the onboard Intel RAID do RAID 5 or is a separate key required for it (part no please and FRU number?).....I take it it can do RAID 0,1 out of the box. Is the key not supposed to come with the unit?
    The LSI RAID card, can it do 0, 1, 5 without any additional key purchase? If it cannot do a raid 5, is it not supposed to part and parcel of a shipped unit?

  • What happens when RAIDing two external Iomega FW disks?

    My problem: I am in the course of upgrading my internal MP disks to 2 x 750GB RAIDed to 1.5TB (for users only). For backup I have 2 external FW800 1TB Iomega Drives that are to be switched on independently. Can I (using disk util: software-) RAID-0 these two external drives (to give me 2TB storage) even if they are switched on subsequently? Does Leopard understand they are RAIDed?
    AFAK the 1TB Iomegas are already internally RAIDed-0. Does this matter?

    So if I understand correctly, the external drives are in reality, two 500GB drives in a RAID0 configuration? And you want to know if you can RAID0 two of these 1TB drives?
    Not sure if it would work; even if it did, it would be a very, very, very bad idea. As Alan stated, RAID0 stripes your data, so a drive failure would result in loss of ALL your data. You should never, ever, backup data to a RAID0 array. If your 1TB externals are in fact really 2 500GB drives in a RAID0 array, I would not even use one of those 1TB drives as a backup.

  • D20 (4158) Marvell no RAID - RAID 0 preserve partitions?

    I added a second SAS HD to my setup and am intending to create a RAID 0 (the second drive is the same type, size, and speed).  
    Does the Marvell BIOS utility preserve partitions while creating a RAID 0?  Or do they all get destroyed and I'll end up with a single, unpartitioned space?  
    If it destroys everything, what would be the simplest way to preserve them?  Any utilities you can recommend that would allow me to (a) copy out my partitions into files on a server on the network, (b) create partitions after RAID 0 created, and (c) copy back from file on the server into the partitions?

    i'm using a 160GB intel G2 SSD.   any commercially-purchased 2.5" SSD would work in your system.   all you need is a 3.5" to 2.5" tray.   intel's retail boxed SSDs come with such an adapter.
    i posted a few benchmarks last year comparing RAID 1 to a single intel SSD.   i'll hunt around for my RAID 1E bench.   it honestly wasn't much better.

    two 15K SAS drives in RAID 1 (same as RAID 0 for read speeds) booted and launched apps in the same amount of time as the SSD.   the difference is that you're using less power, creating less heat, and dealing with less noise.   when copying files and performing normal tasks, the SSD feels a little quicker.   at a minimum, you aren't losing anything by going with an SSD -- it's a gain all-around.
    after switching to an SSD and two 7200 RPM SAS drives, the loudest components in my D10 are the system fans.

    Hi I've got two sandisk-x110-128gb-mlc-sata-iii-sd6sf1m ssd disk in my MSI GE70 Apache Pro I have this disks in Raid 0= MSI Super Raid but i have only read about 650 and write about 500 I ask in sandisk  forum and they told me to upgrade firmware for this ssd I tried sandisk software for upgrade but software don't recognize ssd..also they told me these ssd is OEM manufactured..and MSI provide update of firmware.. How can I update firmware on these ssd? For better performance :-)

  • Cisco Prime Infrastructure 2.0 : Nms:RAID - RAID is Bad Detect rebuild progress

    Hi,
    I'm having problem on our Cisco Prime Infrastructure 2.0 which is always happen HDD failure.
    FYI, HDD failed at Slot 1.
    This is details of message taken from our Cisco Prime alarms;
                    raid is bad detect rebuild progress... enclosure = 252 enclosure = 252 drive 255 is missing or bad
    For your information, I was enter into RAID BIOS to saw the error. I got  Slot:1, SAS, HDD, 278.464GB, Failed.
    I also do the Rebuild drives on that HDD. After Rebuild is completed the HDD back to ONLINE.
    But I still face the same problem for the next day.
    Please help us to resolved the problem.

    You have the necessary CPU, memory and hard drive specifications for an Express size installation (Reference).
    To install Prime Infrastructure 2.0 you will need to first install VMware ESX/ESXi. This is documented in the same Getting Started Guide I linked to above at this link.
    Once you get that far along, just follow the setup wizard and installation is pretty simple.
    FYI you will get better attention to Prime questions over in the Network Management forum.

  • How do I determine what needs attention on my Apple RAID card?

    Every time I turn on the computer, I get a message that says," The Apple RAID Card installed in your system requires your attention."
    This is what I have: RAID 065-7214 Mac Pro RAID Card
    Why do I keep getting this message? I am not sure what needs to be done to rectify any error. If there is no error and the warning is just due to battery charging, then I would like the warning to stop appearing--or do I just have to continuously click "Ignore"? Any insight into this?
    When I open RAID Utility it says: RAID set R0-1 has been mounted with indeterminate data loss. ( Is this just due to improper shutdown?)
    Also: Controller reports RAID system 72-hour battery reserve unavailable-System is configured to run without battery.

    I have had the exact same error message. When you open Raid Utility (that is where you can read what "attention" is needed you will see under the "Status" section what happened, and under the "Tasks" you will see the raid card "initializing" your RAID set. The first time I saw this I freaked, thinking that my drives were being reformatted, and my data would be lost. This is not the case. If you look down on the left side, you will (hopefully) see green lights next to your drives. The initialization seems to be a verification of the raid structure -- basically checking to make sure everything is redundant.
    So, back to the original question: it seems from my poking around that you SHOULD NEVER TURN OFF your Mac Pro with an Apple Raid Card installed. The firmware is not able to spin down the drives correctly, so when you turn your machine back on, you get the error message we have been discussing.
    I would recommend you get a good battery backup (UPS, like an APC) and just power off your monitor when not using your machine. I did not see this in the documentation, I am not 100% sure, but this is what I will be doing. In my case it takes many hours for the Raid Util to initialize my Raid again.

    I'm considering buying a matching 2TB hard drive for my K430-31093ZU system.   I see there's a setting in the BIOS for RAID; however, I'm unable to find instructions for how to setup for RAID 0.    Would appreciate some guidance on how to go from non-RAID system to a RAID 0 system.
    Can I add the second drive and translate the first drive contents through some utility?   I'm hoping I won't have to reinstall OS and all programs.

  • What is a "stripped" raid?

    I see a common misspelling of "striped" being used when describing a raid configuration very frequently on this dicussion board. Not only are seasoned technicians misspelling it but now novice users also misspelling it.
    This used to not bother me until someone asked me the other day about a "stripped" raid and had no clue what a "striped" raid was. They claimed someone gave them advice about "stripping" drives on an Apple support board.
    Just pointing out how misspellings can lead to confusion.
