What is shared by default on servers hard drives?

When you install a Sharepoint 2010 Farm certain things are shared on the hard drives on the servers by default. I "UnShared" the servers hard drives on the farm and now I need to put those servers hard drives back
into their default shared state. The other thing is, once the servers are put back into their default shared hard drive states I need to make sure that what is on the shared hard drives are not visible to users from Windows Explorer "Network"
(used to be Network Neighborhood). So the question is what is shared on the servers hard drives by default and how do you hide what is shared on those servers hard drives from the users? Thank you Shabeaut

According to your post, my understanding is that you wanted to know what can be shared on servers.
Did you mean you mapped some libraries with local file drive?
Per my knowledge, the mapped local drive is visible only for the users who have permission to access the library.
For example, if you have assigned no permission for user1 to this library, then user1 would not see the local drive in the farm.
Otherwise, the user1 would see the local drive.

Here are some of the options I've read about on here that may or may not work:
1. Reset the NVRAM as it may need to be reset to recognize the drive. See below:

2. If the drive is a USB drive, put a USB hub between the drive and the unit. As ridiculous as that may sound in some cases it works.
3. If you have some types of hardware problems and want to test them this works:

That's a test tool only. It isn't going to fix anything just diagnose a bunch of possible hardware problems and it costs money, too.
What format is the drive in? Is it a Mac native format like HFS or is it some other format, like NTFS or FAT?

What should I put on an external hard drive?

So I have a 13" Macbook Air with a 128 GB SSD. I installed a few games and I'm now at half full. I wanted to install WoW today (I know macs aren't meant for gaming) but seeing how it takes up 20GB, I decided against it.
Now I want to get an external hard drive to put any excess stuff on there so I can free up my SSD space and install WoW and SC2.
What should I put on my external hard drive? How would I go about putting the stuff on there? Obviously it'll load slower but for example I'd put photos and music.
Can you run games from an external drive? I know it'd be best if I just left the games on the SSD for the load time and to not have any lag but I'm just wondering.
Can you run programs such as iTunes from an HDD?
Finally, can make a windows partition on the SSD and put all my windows stuff on the same HDD that I'd use for my OSX?

Hi,
You need two cables, one is a sata cable:

This cable is only for data and connects the hdd to the SATA connector on the motherboard.
The other cable is for power:

This connects the hdd to the PSU.
You can also buy a combo cable like this:

All you have to do now is to connect the hdd and that's it. Make sure that the primary drive with the operating system is connected to the primary SATA connector (I think there are numbers 1, 2, 3..)

What is the proceedure for replacing a hard drive (after failure) for RAID 5 with IX4-300D?

I have the IX4-300D with 4 hard drives (identical Seagate drives) using RAID 5.
Someday a hard drive will fail and I and I have to replace it. I read through the users manual briefly and I didn't see any documentation on how to perform a hard drive replacement and not lose any data.
So here are my questions:
1) I know per the instructions that Lenovo prefers using identical hard drives. Let's say in 2 years, 1 hard drive fails. Most likely, the same model Seagate hard drive will not be available. So will using a replacement hard drive by the same manufacturer with similar specifications work?
2) Will the front panel (or the software) tell me which hard drive has failed?
3) What is the proceedure for replacing a hard drive after a failure occurs? I read that the IX4-300D is not hot-swappable. So do I just power the IX4-300D down, replace the hard drive, and turn it back on?

It is best to replace the hard drive with one that is the same manufacturer, rotational speed, and capacity, so it does not have to be exactly the same model.
The front panel should show which drive has failed. If not you can check the web interface to find out.

How do i find out what is backed up to my internal hard drive

i backed up all my movies to an external hard drive to save space on my macbook air but when looking at the storeage space i see that there is still alot of space taken up from backups. I have time machine set up so my macbook backups to my external hard drive, i need to see what all is backed up on my internal hard drive so i can edit what is important and what isnt. So how do i find out what is backed up on my internal hard drive.

It depends on the app you want to use to make backups.
If you are going to use Time Machine (recommended because it's the easiest), you just have to set it up and it will back up the whole OS X partition on the external drive, so don't worry. Another option are the cloning apps, like Carbon Copy Cloner. These apps also clone the whole hard drive, but you can manually select the things you want to back up. The advantage of the clones is that you can start up your computer from them

failure is usually not dead. It can be a bad sector, but usually it is a directory issue or just the partition table (but which require either quick or long format)
if you have a workstation, you should clone both operating systems; you should not put them on the same hard drive. And you just use the clone you made for each (Paragon Clone OS for Windows $19; Carbon Copy is sharefare for OS X)
both of those allow booting off the new hard drive while you figure what you want to do or what happened.
If you only have two hard drives use the other drive bays.
Basically NOTHING happens if you pull one or the other.

Start up in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem. Note: If FileVault is enabled in OS X 10.9 or earlier, or if a firmware password is set, or if the startup volume is a software RAID, you can’t start in safe mode.
Safe mode is much slower to start up and run than normal. The next normal startup may also be somewhat slow.
The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
You may now be able to log in and move the files off the Desktop. Then restart as usual.

Update: The iBook can play any 480p video and higher if I encode them with DivX and in AVI format. But of course this is not compatible with my iPhone 4. At least I can shrink my library now and get away from the full MPEG-2s. I don't get why I can't use Apple's h264 though. There has to be a setting I am missing. The sample Apple h264 videos from the days of Tiger worked flawlessly on my iBook when it was new so the CPU must be capable of decoding it. I really can't understand this.
Also, since I made my videos in English for my family, I had to create soft subtitles for my wife's Chinese family, and I can't get players like QT with perian or MPlayerX to sync them properly to an AVI encoded with DivX, they only sync well with the iPhone 4 m4v/mp4 formatted files I made. This is a real pickle.
So now I may need three or four copies of each video, LOL. I need to hardcode the subtitles if I want to use AVI to playback on older machines, and keep the mp4 file for the iDevices too, while keeping higher quality h264 videos for my American relatives...
If h264 is compatible with my iBook, what is the proper encoding settings? Must I dramatically lower the settings or frame rate? I can settle on 2 copies of each video that way. One iBook/G4/eMac compatible video that syncs correctly with my srt soft subs, and another version that works well with my iPhone 4 and iPad.
All in all, I will end up with more than 3 or 4 version of each video. On my late G5 dual core I have the full 720-1080p uncompressed master files. On my i5 iMac I have the h264 compressed versions for distribution, and lower versions for my iDevices. Now I need to keep either full MPEG-2 files for the iBook to play, or convert to older formats like DivX AVI for our family's legacy machines. I am running out of hard disk space quick now, LOL.

Anyone have any advice on what might be the best networked external hard drive to create my own cloud storage? That way I can have access to all my stored files, songs, pictures and most of all movies on lets say my laptop or iPad. Since there is not very much storage on the iPad. I want to be able to access my hundreds of movies that I have from in my home on my network or away from my home as long as I have an internet connection. I know there is a Seagate one and a Western digital one, does anyone else know of any others or have any advice on which is the best? A plus would be for an external storage device that I would be able to access my movies through my apple to tv? Please help been looking for almost a year and cant make up my mind on what product to buy for what I am trying to do and create my own personal cloud storage.

That's probably what I would do. If you're not well-practiced in Illustrator, this will be a good exercise. Just place the image you have, lock it down (either the object, or you can put it on it's own layer and lock the layer) and start with the pen tool.
Everyone probably has their own method, but I like to start by placing all the points I think I'll need as corner points (click, but don't drag to make the point curved). I then pick the Direct Selection tool (white arrow) and then the Convert Anchor Point tool. If you click on a point, you can drag it to be curved, but if you hold the Command key (on Mac OS) it will temporarily switch to the Direct Selection tool, which will allow you to move the point if necessary. Others would just make curved points as they go, but this is how I like to do it.
For the pointy shapes on the end, you could probably make one then rotate a copy. For the curvy parts in the middle, you may be able to make one and scale copies, or use the blend tool. As you go, you can switch the visibility of the placed graphic on and off to see how your creation looks on it's own, and when compared to the original.
