Hello,
1. No. There is no special wifi network for Skype.
2. You can talk on any wifi network.
3. No. You don't need anything extra.
"Skype wifi" is just the section of this Forum where customers using Skype through a wifi network can exchange experiences and request assistance.
Apologies for the confusion.

  • Arbitary Skype Wifi charges!!!!!

I went to my loved cafe today. Evertime I connect to the hotspot the skype wifi popup is shown. Normally I close it and connect though the portal that gives you a FREE 1 hour of internet.Today I clicked connect by mistake.
Since it was a mistake, I immediatelly started to search how to disconnect. No chance!!!!.
I switched off the wifi, I closed the laptop, I exited skype. Nothing hapenned.
After 30 minutes a charge of 4.2Euros appeared on my account for 29:58 minutes of wifi!
Is there any 29:58:00 minimum connection time documented anywhere in the skype wifi site?
If anybody from skype is reading this forum, I would like to know what is the meaning of "you pay what you use" that is advertised for this service. The correct should be "You pay of what we decide to charge you".

    Dear All,

Here is a link to the instruction on how to contact Skype Customer Service via their secure portal: Contact Customer Service
As you know you intend to contact Customer Service, skip past Step 2 of the instruction where several articles from the FAQ library will appear for you to review, and proceed to Step 3, Continue Support Request (the "button" appears at the lower right corner of the website page). You may also skip past in Step 4 where you will be referred back here to the Community; no need to do this as the Community is where you started.

  • Purpose of Skype Wifi

Does anyone actually know what Skype wifi is actually for? Its obvously not for gaining internet access at hot spots. I have yet to find a single hotspot that supported it. And everything about it seems to be a catch 22
And none of the moderators seem to want to admit it. It took this guy 4 pages worth of post for him to finally jump in to say there are no list of locations or coverage maps
    http://community.skype.com/t5/Other-features/skype-wifi-hotspots-list-location-needed/m-p/1449417/hi...

How the Hell are you suppose to use Skype wifi if I need to be logged in before I can use it? Thats like saying "You need to have internet access before you can have internet access" Is skype wifi a Joke? an april fools prank that never got removed?
From start to finish can someone give a use case senario where Skype Wifi actually works and is not just a joke?
    Thanks in Advance

I have never tried the App on a phone as of yet. But on my laptop I HAVE to have an active internet connection BEFORE I can log into skype. is that different for the mobile version of skype? but If I understand you properly from the other thread
    http://community.skype.com/t5/Other-features/Skype-WiFi-an-access-tool-only-Do-not-confuse-with-WiFi...
What Everyone on the skype site means to say is the Provider provides a logon, unrelated to skype, that uses the skype password and username? I understand the difference between wifi and service. What I believe I am misunderstanding is why I would need to pay for service "Which I need to be able to log into skype under normal circumstances" when, if I am able to log into skype I must already have service being provided to me ... does that make sense? If that is the case then I have a valid q. If not Then I am wrong and you are completely right KillerHeelsUK and I am just an idiot who has failed to understand what you are trying to say.
kudos to you by the way for posting to the right thread rather than making a new one btw

  • Skype WiFi on a Laptop - Problems

Hi. I am trying to use "Skype WiFi" in the UK prior to using it for real whilst travelling, but so far I cannot get it to work.  I have the latest version of Skype, I have Skype WiFi enbaled under the Tools menu and I have tried to use numerious supposedly compatable WiFi Hotspots (mainly BTOpenzone), but so far without luck.
    What happens is:
    1) I open Skype and try and sign in - this is before I have connected to the hotspot (as per the instructions on the Skype website.  This feels odd as without an internet connection I am unsure how it will authenticate.
    2) I then connect to the hotspot and then wait.  i do not attempt to open a browser to get to a logon screen as I believe that Skype WiFi should do this and deal with the payment and authentication.
    3) After a while of Skype attempting to connect I get an "Unable to connect" message in Skype.
Can anyone help point out what i am doing wrong?
    Many Thanks.
    Sam

In order to use Skype WiFi:
    1. In computer WiFi settings connect to a hotspot
    2. Open Skype
    3. You will be prompted that Skype WiFi is available here
    4. At this point, log into Skype
    5. You will see per-minute price and option to Connect to the internet via Skype WiFi
    6. If you connect, your computer will now have internet access
    7. Do not forget to disconnect from Skype WiFi once you are done

  • Skype WiFi - an access tool only. Do not confuse ...

What Skype WiFi does is provide a way to pay for access to the internet; rather than typing a credit card number in a public venue.
You use your Skype credit to pay for the access fee, and only for minutes needed as opposed to having to purchase a day pass or block of time.
It is an access tool only. Not a wifi provider like Boingo or Cloud.
This is the main purpose of Skype WiFi.
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

You open your browser and see the inital holding page of the hotspot provider.
If Skype is an option given by the hotspot provider to pay for access at this point you can then follow the prompts and login.  It's an ACCESS tool only at this point -- NOT a contact tool for IM or video chat. That is only enabled once you have the WiFi connection, and Skype loaded to your PC.
This service used to be called Skype Access. In hindsight it might have been better not to rename it!
You pay for access by using your Skype credit - instead of your credit card. That's the only thing it offers!
Once you login and pay using Skype credit, the hotspot is activated by the hotspot provider. You can then surf the web.
Here's an example. INO_KOL has a hotspot. People who want access can pay him using either their credit card, or....if they prefer not to use a card (don't have one?), they can use Skype credit. So...... they open their browser and see INO_KOL's holding page. This has one of two things, a credit card payment option and a Skype user ID and password option which is only for them to enable the charging of their Skype credit.
Which ever one they choose enables access to the web.
    Hope this helps.

  • Is Skype WiFi hotspot list on map view out yet?

I was looking for WiFi's location list, and I found that on the pricing list of Skype WiFi page there are given the names of the hotspot providers.
But I don't think that only name can help you to locate the place.
What I was looking for is map view of hotspot location..
I read somewhere that work was in progress on it.
So is it progressed till now or shall we have to wait further?

@Neil: Thanks for sharing, but what is really - in the case you describe - the point of using Skype Credit instead of just paying normally for the pay hotspot that WiFI Finder has brought you to? Is it much cheaper, easier etc.? If not I'lll spare myself for the inconvenience of transfering money to my Skype account (and thereby paying in advance) - and just use the pay and free hotspots that WiFi will locate for me.    Regards,Anders

  • I want to be Skype wifi partners

We wish to be partners with Skype, in "Skype Wifi".
we have a big access network, based on wifi access point, in most Ukraine cities. up to 4000 wifi access point.
with whom we can talk on this issue?

  • Do I need BOTH Skype and Skype WIFI apps for my iphone?

it was stated, the difference is with skype wifi, you can use your credit you bought on skype to pay for wifi access in hotels, etc.
therefore you don't need skype wifi if you have infetnet or free wifi.
what is so hard to understand?

That's how I understood the answer. Using the 'normal' Skype app you can use 3G or WiFi (depending on my settings). If WiFi access needs to be paid for (on a train, through a hotel, etc.), it often comes in minimum 1 hour blocks, in which case Skype WiFi allows you to access WiFi just for the duration of the Skype call, providing you have sufficient Skype credit. There are two reasons why you might want to do this: (a) even though you might have your phone service set to 'Roaming', calls in or out might not work (happens to me all the time in the Middle East); and (b) you only pay for your actual call time. Whether that represents overall value for money depends on Skype call rates versus the 1-hour charge from the train, hotel, etc., so that element is worth checking. As to 'most WiFI hotspots being free', that may be true for much of urban Europe and the US, but it's not true for large parts of the rest of the world.

  • Skype wifi charges money even when the it is disab...

It has happened several times that I am not using skype, but just connected by the phone, and that I was charged by skype wifi.  It really doesn't make sense to me, as the skype wifi is disabled to my account.  Is there a solution? And how can skype credit back my money?

I forgot to add, it's a Verizon phone so it's CDMA. It used to be only GSM phones that did this.

  • What is Skype trying to hide?

I've had a problem with incoming calls for some time; some ring through, others don't. I only find out about the missed calls when I get emails telling me I have voicemail, though the actual voicemail doesn't usually appear in Skype until much later - sometimes as late as a day later.
Pretty straightforward issue, right? "Some calls are not reaching me." Not a lot of subtlety there. But chat support has been incompetent and awful. I've been promised follow-ups that never occur. I've gotten bad information, misinformation and been outright lied to - repeatedly. And every single support rep I've spoken with has read/heard "Some calls are not reaching me" as "NO calls are reaching me" - big difference, yet often I've had to correct them several times in the same chat!
So after literally 90 minutes on chat support this morning, I said enough. Support is not helping. I wanted to contact Skype's US office - not so much because I expected them to provide tech support, but simply to let them know about the poor service I'd received. (Those who have had similar impulses will know where this is going, I'm sure.) I was told there are no US offices for Skype, despite all manner of evidence to the contrary. After being pressed repeatedly, I was given the company's Luxembourg address.
Suddenly my question went from "Can you fix my technical issue?" to "What is Skype trying to hide?" Skype is reaping fortunes from its US customers. It seems pretty outrageous that Skype won't deign to speak with them, except through overseas representatives who barely seem to understand the product they're meant to support.
Is there any accountability at Skype?
Note: Even trying to post this here, I keep getting an error message ("An unexpected error has occurred") just trying to Preview this post. You are a communications company, right Skype?

I've heard from Aimi, who's requested additional info. I'll provide it, but why isn't all of this data readily available to Skype support? Certainly I've given it to them in great detail several times now, to every single Skype support staffer I've spoken with - in chat, on the phone, via email. Is there not a case log that reflects this? Am I really keeping more complete case files on this issue than Skype?
I have three issues with Skype, each escalating out of the previous one.
    1. Some of my incoming calls are not coming through. Obviously I cannot know how many, but I frequently recieve emails alerting me to voicemail that, upon login to Skype, have not arrived. Sometimes the messages do show up after a few hours, sometimes the next day, sometimes after logging out and logging back in. Sometimes, I imagine, they don't show up at all. And missed calls who don't leave a message? No idea. Have voice messages been left that never reached me at all? It certainly seems likely.
    2. In trying to report this issue via chat, it was clear the reps were unable to grasp even the basics of my issue. EVERY SINGLE rep I chatted with could not keep straight that not ALL of my incoming calls were failing to connect, but SOME were. These are two different issues, and SOME versus ALL seems a clear and simple distinction. But it proved too much for Skype chat support, and reps often couldn't keep this fact straight IN THE SAME CHAT. Imagine asking a waiter to hold the mayo, only to have them reply, "...Extra mayo, right?" Over and over. And you just know that sandwich is showing up with mayonnaise.
In investigating my issue, Skype staff attempted to phone my line repeatedly and could not connect. How many tech issues go unresolved because the issue can't be recreated on command? This is the support team's FIRST-HAND experience  with the issue in question, an ideal sampling. Some SEVENTEEN calls were attempted by Skype's support team to my line, only the last of which connected. But rather than follow up on their own experience, they've insisted that if I can't provide the phone numbers, dates and service providers (!) of OTHERS' failed incoming calls, there's nothing Skype will do to resolve the issue. When I asked the Skype supervisor if he'd provide that very same data for the seventeen calls to my line from his office, I was told he and Skype would be unable to accommodate me.
    3. Extremely displeased with the failures, time wasting and general inadequacy of Skype's support options, I asked for a mailing address for their US offices. I simply wanted to write to corporate as a dissatisfied customer, to call the failings of their support services to their attention. Every single Skype rep I've spoken to has refused to share a domestic address for the company. Some insisted there is no US office, others have tried to deflect the question - "We just want to be sure you're dealing with the right venue that can help you" etc. But most Skype employees/contractors simply ignore the question as though I never even asked it - though I've asked it in every chat (multiple times) and in each email.
What kind of company reaps the kind of profits Skype does from its US subscribers, yet refuses to share a mailing address for its domestic offices? This is not the behavior of an ethical company doing business on level ground. Companies with nothing to hide DON'T HIDE. Even the Better Business Bureau - a worthy organization that most ethical, reputable businesses are pleased to be on record with - has only dead addresses for Skype. Does this suggest an ethical corporate culture that makes customer service any kind of priority? Because I see it as closer to the kind of behavior exhibited by fly-by-night operations eager to avoid any kind of accountability whatsoever. It all makes for a highly suspicious public profile in any reasonable estimation. And their customer service, in my experience, is a cruel joke on its subscribers.
The only way I've been able to get Skype's attention at all has been by shouting loudly, via every means I can think of: repeatedly requesting a mailing address to write the company, a phone number, posting to this forum, emailing Skype's Facebook account, Tweeting to two different Sype Twitter accounts... And in terms of Skype service and problem resolution, I'm no farther along than I was weeks ago.
And in terms of providing an address for their US offices, Skype still appears to have something to hide.
