What is smart filter

I am trying to copy filters from one layer to the other.  I did this in my previous version before I upgraded to CS4.  Now when I move the filter to a different layer it no longer is on the original layer.  I understand I am supposing to be using smart filter.  I don't know what this is or how to use it.  Any advice or how do I use this?  All I am trying to do is move my filter so I can include it on another layer.  Thanks.

Filters originally were destructive, meaning they changed the elements they were applied to permanently.
And they were not visible in the Layers Panel, because they had simply changed the pixels there without leaving further traces (except the History).
When You are trying to move a Filter in the Layers Panel that means it must be applied as a Smart Filter, which can only be applied to Smart Objects and is nondestructive, meaning it can be edited later on and doesn’t change the original Layer content.
To duplicate the Smart Filter don’t just drag it to the other Layer, but alt-drag (or rather option-drag) it.
Edit: I had missed Josh’s post, which offers sound advice, indeed.

  • Strange Grid Pattern when Using Smart Filter

I added a smart filter to my image in Photoshop CS5 and performed a Highlights and Shadows adjustment, and there's now a faint diamond-shaped grid pattern over the entire image. This shows through all adjustment layers but disappears when I turn off the adjustment layer.
This occurs on both of my two monitors, and it happens at every scale that I view the image at, including 100% actual pixels.
I'm using a Mac Pro Quad-Core Intel Xeon 2.8 GHz, with 10GB RAM and a NVIDIA GeForce 8800 GT video card. Running the latest Mac OS X, 10.6.3 and the latest Photoshop, CS% 12.0 x64.
    Any clues?
    -=-Joe

Ok thx, got the file and tested it.
First of all: Yes, I see the pattern, so it is obviously independent from both Hardware and operating system, I tested on Windows 7 / CS5X.
I can approve what c.pfaffenbichler found. Obviously we were wrong with our yesterdays findings that the transparency is not transparent. Instead, it is. It is barely visible, but testing it myself it seems to be "real" transparency, but at a very very low level, 1% max. I put a solid color behind that Smartobject. If you turn that layer visible, the grid disappears. To make sure that it realy is the bottom layer that shines through and not some kind of weird "new bug fixing other bug" thing, I put 2 layers behind the Smartobject, one pure black, one pure white. As you should expect, the image turns slightly (!) darker if you turn the black layer visible compared to the "only white layer visible" status.
So obviously shadow/highlights really seems to affect the transparency of smartobjects. Sometimes. Sweet. Will this be fixed?

  • Using ACR smart filter on 32 bit images

After combining 3 images in HDR pro then opening in Photoshop CC using the ACR smart filter, how do I keep the edits I made when I then flatten the image and convert to 16 bit?
I seem to loose all the edits I made and it just brings up the HDR Pro options.
What is the point of being able to use the ACR smart filter if you then have to start again on a 16 bit version???

I usually save the 32-bit version before flattening and converting to 16-bit. Then you can always go back to the original edits by opening the 32-bit file. But yes, granted, this is a two-step process.
When you are confronted with the HDR dialog again, under "Method," just choose Exposure and Gamma. Then you won't lose all your HDR construction work from before.

  • Saving Smart Filter Settings with Layer Comps

Have attempted to save various smart filter setting combinations for a stack of smart filters using Layer Comps but all layer comps default to the same smart filter setting regardless of the setting when the layer comp was created.
Consider changing Layer Comps be to save the smart filter settings also.

  • Lightroom ignores smart filter masks

I just noticed the following problem after upgrading from LR4 to LR5:
    - Select RAW (.CR2) file in LR5
    - Edit in -> Open as Smart Object in Photoshop (CS6)
    - Apply smart filter
    - Use smart filter mask to apply filter to portion of image
    - Save
When viewed and exported as a .jpg in LR5, the filter effect is not masked, but applied to the entire image.  The .jpg saved directly from CS6 is correctly masked. As a workaround, the smart layer can be duplicated and rasterized.  Is this a defect introduced in LR5?
    Update 6/27/2013:
The problem also exists in LR4
It is not related to RAW, or Open as Smart Object from LR.  It can be reproduced by:
    - create a new image in Photoshop CS5 or CS6
    - convert to smart object
    - apply smart filter (something noticeable, like solarize)
    - add a smart filter mask for a portion of the image
    - save as a .psd
When imported into LR4 or LR5, the smart filter mask is ignored, and the filter is applied to the entire image.
Can anyone else reproduce this problem?  Is it a known limitation of LR?

I doubt it. When you operate on the layers level, all you have is pixel values of the individual layers without one layer knowing about the other. Filter chaining outside of what smart objects offer would require a much different approach to the whole matter and then we talk about a workflow similar to node-based compositing applications, where each processing operation is concatenated with the previous one in terms of how the code runs under the hood. Not something that will happen any time soon in PS, I think.

  • Smart Filter "blending"

If someone can help me to understand this, I would be very grateful.
If you put 2 or more smart filters on a single smart object layer, the effects of the filters are "combined" in a way that makes sense.  Then why is it that if you have 2 smart object layers, each with one filter, there is no way to "blend" them in the same way?  If Photoshop can blend the filters properly when they're on the same layer, why is there no ability to do that when they are on different layers?  Am I missing something obvious here?
BTW, the reason I'm interested is because I'd like to have individual masks for each smart filter.  I know I can do the nested smart object workaround, but that's rather a hassle and uses a lot of memory.
    Thanks!

  • Why doesnt the smart filter mask move with the smart object?

OMG Why doesnt the smart filter mask move with the smart object?  Yikes Way PITA

If you look at the other tread about transform Again and smart Object layers you will find I found there seems to be two flavors of Transform and some bazar behaviors when it come to smart object layers. http://forums.adobe.com/message/4611500#4611500
However for this problem here I think I can not show you how to do it.
First target the smart filters Mask.  In fact so you can see what is happening Alt+Click on it so Photoshop displays the mask rather then the the composit image.  Then  use Ctrl+T free transform then just for a test hold down the Ctrl and the Alt keys and drag in a cornor to constrain and srink the Mask thee release the keys and press enter to commit the transform.
Next target the smart object layer then use the short cut Ctrl+Shift+T (Transform Again) on a PC the smart object layer will be transformed to match the filter mask transform.

  • What are smart mailboxes and why do i need both smart and "normal" ones?

What are smart mailboxes and why do I need both smart and "normal" mailboxes?

    Hi Kingoftypos,
Thanks for that clarification. So, now it appears that the ultimate purpose of a Smart Mailbox is to point to all emails that meet the criteria in a single place, so if they are spread among several mailboxes, you will be able to see them all together. Here is an article from Apple that describes it:
A Smart Mailbox displays in one location messages that are stored in other mailboxes, so you don’t have to move messages between mailboxes. The messages displayed by a Smart Mailbox are based on criteria you define, and are automatically updated to include new messages that match your criteria. For example, you might create a Smart Mailbox that displays all messages found in all mailboxes from a specific sender.
If you change a message in a Smart Mailbox, such as marking the message as read or unread, or moving or deleting the message, the change is reflected in the mailbox where the message is actually stored.
So, adam, I would think that, if you had mail going to a lot of different places, and wanted to be able to see a particular set of those in a single place, you would use a smart mailbox. Maybe use the rules to direct your mail to different places to start with, but a smart mailbox to bring a set of common ones all together into a single smart mailbox?
Maybe you have Rules move your Amazon mail to an Amazon folder and your Apple mail to an Apple folder, but then you have a Smart Mailbox that contains any mail that has the word "Receipt" in the Subject line?
    Just a thought....

  • After ios5 upgrade cant get out to the internet via wireless, it wont  get past our Smart Filter (web filter)

I just upgraded my 3GS to IOS5, and now at work when i am connected to our WiFi I can no longer get out to the internet.
A little back story on how it worked prior to ios5:
I would connect via wireless, and then load Safari and type in a webpage I wanted to go to.  A pop up box would come up, to authenticate me on our Web filter server (Running Smartfilter), I woudl enter my regular Active Directory username and Password and boom, i could then surf to my hearts content.
After the upgrade, I connect to the wireless, load Safari, type in the webpage i want to go to, and the progress bar moves abotu 3mm and then stops, I never get the smart filter prompt.
I have tried a full reset on the phone, forget network, reset all network settings, I even tried putting in the IP address of the smart filter box as a proxy and still it doesnt work.  I have gone to smartfilters website to see if anyone else has posted there, or if there was a clue as to why it doesnt work, but nothing so far.
anyone else having this problem? any ideas?
If it wasnt broken, why would apple mess with it!  a LOT of companies run smartfilter as well as other web filters.  I thought apple was trying to seduce corporate customers, and so far a lot of poeple are dissapointed that they cant get to the internet.

nks in advance for any assistance.

I am having the same problem.  The issue also occurs with Safari on Mac OS 10.7.  I work for a school and I am sure that other schools are using smartfilter too.

  • What is best filter for MacBook Pro

What is best filter for my son's MacBook Pro to block adult/**** sites while allowing access to most anything else. The parental control I set up has not been the answer.  I constantly have to unlock sites for him.  I would appreciate any suggestion.

If the options on the computer itself are not sufficient, you might try other options like OpenDNS Home, but it also involves a list that might need to be customized.
In the end, the best defense is passing down a strong set of values so that when your son does visit the "wrong" site (as he inevitably will, and increasingly so into adulthood) he at least has an innate knowledge that he shouldn't be there.

  • Re-size Layer with Smart Filter without affecting Smart Filter aspect of the layer

I made a wax seal on photoshop with a lot of embossment, bevelment and a Smart Filter. It's done and I just need to make it smaller so it fits well on my certificate. When I resize it (Ctr + T) It pops up a messgae that reads:
    Adobe Photoshop CS6 Extended
"Smart Filters applied to layers contained in this group will be turned off temprarily while the transform is being previewed. They will be applied after commiting the transform."
    OK
    [] Don't show again
I click OK and I re-size the layer with free transform, and then hit enter. The Layer is resized but my Smart Filter which cretaes a wavy affect around the seal is totally distorted.
How do re-size my layer with smart filter without affecting the smart filter aspect of the layer

Right-click on the name of the Smart Object layer in the Layers panel to get the menu shown below. Pick "Convert to Smart Object" to encapsulate the SO and its Smart Filter and Layer Styles inside a new SO which can be resized without changes in appearance.

  • What are smart folders and what do they do?

Do smart folders keep copies of files or alias's?

Do smart folders keep copies of files or alias's?
What a smart folder "keeps" is not the same as what it "displays" in the window that you see when you open it.
A "smart folder"  as stored on disk is not a folder at all, but is only a very small file, of type "Saved Search Query". The default location for storing these files is  your home>Library> Saved Searches folder.  That small file contains only a saved set of spotlight-type instructions for a search, and doesn't "keep" anything at all.  When that smart folder file is opened by the Finder, the Finder effectively carries out a "command-F" search using the instructions in the file, and displays the results in a window very similar to a command-F Finder search window. And just as with an ordinary command-F search, what you see in that search window are not copies or aliases, but the actual items that you have searched for. If you delete something from that window, you are deleting the item itself.

  • Using Camera Raw as a Smart Filter in PSCC2014

I followed this tutorial but in the end I could not get it out of 32 bit mode. It kept wanting to process in HDR pro. I wanted to change the mode to 16 bit but was not able to.  I was happy with the image but it was completely unavailable for saving.
    Any help?
Adobe Camera Raw as a Smart Filter in Photoshop CC | Adobe Evangelists - Julieanne Kost | Adobe TV

Not all formats support 16 or 32 bit modes. When moving from 32 bit mode you are shown a dialog box, that is to set a balance to your liking for how it should look in 16 or 8 bit mode.
A 32 bit mode can be saved as a psd file and maybe a tiff file, but really there are not a whole lot of other formats that do support 32 bit mode. Oh yea pdf will as well.

  • Applying smart filter to a cropped image

In my case, I have a smart layer and the smart filters on it.
I cropped the smart layer without deleting cropped pixels and now I want to apply a little bit vignette and a border with one of the smart filters.
But, the smart filter is applied to all the pixels in the image, not to the cropped ones.
I'm duplicating the smart layer and rasterizing it and applying the filter on this second rasterized layer, but there is no way, the filter is always applied to the uncropped image.
Is there a way to apply a smart filter only to the cropped pixels of an image?

So, this would mean that by using a color matte underneath, it's parameters would be independent of those of the image above it?
    Yes
If I wanted to have the image move or re-size, I would have to then apply the changes to the border seperately as well?
Yes, although since you are cropping an image you could copy the clip you've cropped, then Control Click the matte clip, select Paste Attributes, and check the Crop box. This will size your matte to the exact crop of your clip. Then load the clip into the viewer and since it's a crop you can slightly modify the crop or you can simply move the matte clip a little down and to the right or left or whatever your taste desires. Now you have your clip and a border.
If I wanted to have the image move or re-size, I would have to then apply the changes to the border seperately as well? Or would I nest them into 1 clip then apply size changes?
At this point Nesting them would be faster.

  • What are Smart Forms?

    Hi All,
What are smart forms and what's it's use? As a functional consultant, what do i need to know about it?
A User asked me about creating a SmartForm to gather information (from different dept of the business - Finance, Quality, Purchasing...etc) to create a new Material Master.
What is the transaction code for this? Are smart form something like PDF? Can this be saved to desktop and email to people via outlook? Are data input to the form also saved with the form?
    Thanks in advance

    Hi,
Smartforms are layout sets in SAP.
    Transaction Code :SMARTFORMS
As a functional consultant you need to know the standard forms available for different scenarios. If you need to develop a new layout, you need to give layout design and proper logic to ABAPer.
Visit [SAP's online help on Smartforms|http://help.sap.com/saphelp_nw70/helpdata/EN/a5/de6838abce021ae10000009b38f842/content.htm].
You use Smart Forms to create and maintain forms for mass printing in SAP systems. Besides using the printer for standard output you can also select the Internet (by using a generated HTML output), a fax, or e-mail as the output medium.
In addition to the tool, SAP delivers a selection of forms for central business processes. This includes forms in Customer Relationship Management (CRM) as well as in the applications SD, FI, and HR.
Smart Forms offers the following advantages:
    -        Creating and maintaining forms requiring half the time
    -        Adapting forms without any programming knowledge due to entirely graphical user interface
    -        Integrating input elements into the HTML output, which enables you to use a form in Internet applications as well
