What is some good video editing software for the Imac?

We just got a Imac for my church but Imovie is not cutting it, I need software that can capture video through a firewire. Can then edit it with adding effects such as fading in and out. Then it needs to be able to/have included software that I can use to put the video onto a dvd. I want to know of the best stuff out there. Thanks!

I need software that can capture video through a firewire.
Here is how I do it (I have tried almost everything).
For maximum quality here is my procedure:  ADVC300 > iMovie 06 > iDVD 11
http://www.videoguys.com/Item/Grass+Valley+ADVC300/035303230363.aspx
I would use iMovie 06 with iDVD 09/11, why?
iMovie 09/11 uses 'single field processing' meaning every other horizontal line of the video is thrown out, which reduces the sharpness of the footage. iMovie 06 uses ALL of the image to form the video.

What is a good video editing software I can use on my MacBook Pro?
*also, It would be great if I could edit multi-channel audio on the software
    Any suggestions?

probably THE best software is Avid Media Composer. It's an industry standard for Feature Films, Television programs and commercials.
Professional editors and producers around the world have told them what the software needs to succeed.
-More efficient and easy-to-use video editing tools. An open platform that enables you to work with everything you want and integrate into any workflow. More power to eliminate bottlenecks, so you can work faster than ever.
-Create 5.1 and 7.1 surround mixes directly within Media Composer, or import from Pro Tools (watch the video)
I own this NLE and it truly is the best out of all of the editing programs I've used.
** It's quite expensive though. But worth it if you want the best!
    ~$2,499.00
Another option would be Final Cut Pro. The little brother of Avid MC. I have Final Cut Pro X and I am very disappointed with it. It’s not an update of the existing Final Cut, which is one of the most popular programs; it’s completely new and radically redesigned. It looks different, its strengths are different — "and after one day of using it, many professional video editors are running through the streets with pitchforks."
Final Cut Pro X Review - NY Times
** It's a good starting program if you just doing editing that isn't quite as demanding as feature films, TV programs and commercials. Many editors have been moving away from FCP after the release of the current version. However, It is a lot less expensive than Avid MC
    ~$299.99
Personally, having both Media Composer and Final Cut Pro X, I would go for Media Composer if it's in your budget. Definitely worth the price!

  • What are some good visual effects programmes for the Mac?

I have been editing with Final Cut Express since 05 and I want to be able to do fancy visual effects I cannot do with Final Cut Express so I put it to you; what are some good visual effects programmes for the Mac? I know there is Adobe After Effects but I am wondering if there are any others, including from Apple.

Or does it? Because by purchasing Motion, you also get the Pro Res codecs and Animation. Will FCE be able to work with them if they're in your QT library? I think so but am not positive. I'd check with the FCE gurus in that discussion forum.
So I half answered my own question. FCE will respect the alpha channel in a PR 4444 file. But from the limited testing I was able to to, there doesn't seem to be a way to export it ( or other flavors of PR) as a PR sequence. It renders as AIC, which is fine. FWIW, it can always be exported as Pro Res via QT Conversion, but why bother?
However,  I now have to say – despite what I said in my first post – that I'm not 100% percent certain that the all the codecs will be available by buying Motion. I'm like 95% sure, the more I think about it. But I have too much NLE and graphics "stuff" on my systems to test it conclusively.

  • Any suggestions on a good video editing software for MacBook Pro

I have just joined the MacBook Pro community would like an idea for good video software options

Also, compare the hardware specification (not just minimums) needed to actually
use the video editing software; plus consider external storage options of huge
capacity since most portable computers don't really have all that much storage.
A few years ago some suggested Avid Media Composer as professional software
but then in the same discussion, said the MacBook Pro may not be able to handle
the demands of the application; and went on to suggest an Apple Mac Pro tower.
Some software needs require further study prior to committing resources & funds
to discover perhaps the product may/may not be adequate. Avid likely is still costly.
Hopefully you can get a great editor with a few creative options, for a decent price.
    Good luck & happy computing!

  • Help! what are some good free converting softwares for 5th g

I need some good converting softwares for my 5th gen ipod. i cant find anything to convert my mpegs to mp4 for my gen 5 ipod

I have a Windows machine and I bought Quicktime Pro and it works for the short .mov files my digital cameras create. I tried a bunch of "free" DVD conversion programs, including Videora for iPod with mixed results (I couldn't get Videora to work). Finally, I bought PQDVD for iPod (http://www.pqdvd.com). It was expensive when you compare it to free software ($39.95) BUT you can stick a DVD (that you own of course) in and press a couple of buttons and it makes a video file. The nicest part is it makes very small files (275MB average). It also does it twice to three times as fast as anything else I tried. The movies look and play great on the iPod (except you have to go all the way to the end to stop them, hmmm). So if I pay myself $10 an hour, I'll get my money back pretty quickly. In one night, I got 4 movies moved over to my iPod, no hassles.

  • Is there ANY good video editing software for Linux??

I am at my wit's end. ALL I want to do is put picture-in-picture. Here's what I've run into:
Avidemux: Hardly actually does anything. Beyond trimming files, this thing's pretty much worthless.
OpenMovieEditor: Won't read my video files.
KDenLive: Annihilates my processor, and the sync goes off every time I trim clips
Cinelerra: crashes whenever I load any files.
LiVES: No idea if this does it, but the documentation seems to say no.
I'm about to lose my damn mind here. Is there anything I'm missing?

SomeGuyDude wrote:Avidemux, as I said, doesn't do picture in picture. Nor any of the other host of things I'd like to do with my clips. Thus, it's no good to me.
Blender's sequence editor can do picture in picture:

I wouldn't be surprised if there was a bunch of plug-ins that suit what you need, whether internal or third party.

I have Final Cut Studio V1 - the PPC/Intel V5/5.1 cross-grade version, which would suit your requirements perfectly. (I have it for sale at present down here).
If you keep looking, you're sure to find a similar second hand copy in your area, without the need to upgrade your graphics card.
I'd go for Final Cut Pro as above over any version of Express. FCP has the full version of LiveType - not the truncated version that was released later on.

It will be amazing if you (HP people) can develop and integrate a video editing software like Adobe premiere Pro into the HP Sprout.

HP is pretty reticent to revealing "Future Plans".  It would be a real shot in the arm though if this happens!
How about it @Ty1 ?  Can you shed any light on the subject?

  • What is best basic video editing app for Mac

I'm looking for a video editing application for the mac. I only require something basic, as in being able to crop out unwanted footage and join multiple movie files then export to MP4 format.
I don't need to add audio, titiles or make colour adjustments etc.
Tried iMovie but not a fan.

It sounds like the real need here is for an online collaboration solution, not necessarily building a website from scratch. It would be best to find a service that already does what you want, have a multi-user discussion board that supports multiple groups. Blackboard Learn looks like it integrates grading, evaluations, tests, multimedia, etc., so if the actual scope of your project is like that, maybe Blackboard Learn is the way to go. But is it too much?
If you are merely looking for a space where groups of students can merely discuss privately and not much else, you could conceivably go with something like Facebook Groups, Google+ Communities, etc. These are already coded and tested across multiple platforms and reinforced for security.
You could simply "get a website program" like iWeb or RapidWeaver, but the serious disadvantage of these programs is that you have to build it from nothing. You code the logins, you code the discussion group architecture, you make it work with laptops, tablets, and phones, you code it against hackers and mischievous students. Unless you can handle that (and maybe you did back with iWeb), it might be better to go with a ready-made "groupware" solution that is already tested and robust.

  • Original OS 9 software for the iMac Graphite

just curious i picked up an older iMac at a thrift store however, of course it didn't come with any software. i thought i could load OS X.2 which i did, and that was fine, but so i ordered the software from someone on ebay, but my question is this: will the OS 9 and 10.0.4 software for the iMac Graphite work on my iMac. the specs on the one i bought are: indigo, 500, 20GB, 128 RAM, CD-RW.

    Hi, Tim -
    Welcome to Apple's Discussions.
Your indigo iMac 500MHz model can be one of three iMac model series. Each has its own minimum OS version, which is the one it originally shipped with. These are -
    • iMac (Summer 2000) - OS 9.0.4
    • iMac (Early 2001) - OS 9.1 (and OSX 10.0.3 on later models)
    • iMac (Summer 2001) - OS 9.1 and OSX 10.0.4
All of the OS 9 versions above, the ones that shipped with those models, are model-specific versions - that means that a retail OS 9 Install CD of equal version may not work. However, a retail OS 9 Install CD of the next higher version will work.
It is doubtful that CDs that came with a graphite iMac will work for the machine in question, unless the graphite model is of the same model series as the indigo one (there were graphite models in all three series given above, plus one in at least one other model series).
To find out which model series yours belongs to, click the Support tab at the top of any of these pages. On the new page, scroll down, look to the lower right of the page for the section About Your Support Coverage. Enter your machine's serial number in the box, click the Go button.

  • What is good anti virus software for the mac?

What is good antivirus software for the Mac?  I think I've been hacked.

ClamXav from http://www.clamxav.com . Be cautious of other antivirus software as some, not all just some, can cause system issues.  I've used ClamXav for years with no issues with it.
By the way, you may get some responses to this question along the lines of "there are no mac virus's so you don't need antivirus software". While it's true there are no mac virus's today, in my opinion, it's like the stock market in that past performance is not a guarantee for the future.
If you scan these discussions, you'll find hours of reading on this question ....

  • Good video editing software?

anyone have any preferred video editing software? why do you like it? mainly looking at openshot/kdenlive/pitivi.. but haven't done much video editing in the past so not sure which I should go with. any thoughts?

I made a video once and used openshot for it. Back then version 1.0 was the most up to date stable release. There was no undo function etc. But still, it worked quite well. But I think kdenlive is better, but it's a KDE application, so it's pretty fat on a wm only environment.
I'd say, you should give them all a try, it's a matter of taste and it depends on what you want to do. I'd recommend openshot.
As someone who currently has openshot 1.1.3 installed, I can confirm there is now an undo option.
