What is Spotlight indexing when Safari is in use?

I would like to cut down on the intermittent mds (Spotlight) activity when surfing the web. What folders or files do I need to add to the Spotlight Privacy pane to stop indexing Safari-related files?
Thanks.

Okay, I tried adding the Library/Safari and Library/Caches folders to Privacy, but am still getting the frequent MDS/hard disk activity from Spotlight when running Safari.
Anything else I can try?

  • SWITCHING OFF SPOTLIGHT indexing when backing up to external HD...

Hi....could someone just guide me through the following:
Below are two emails one i sent & the reply..........which will explain all.
I need to know what i should do :
    email 1
I would like to know more about the lag that occurs between backing up to a
d2 volume using SilverKeeper and me tring to dismount the external lacie
volume from my computor desktop when SilverKeeper has finished.
I also notice that my internal cpu appears to be active up to a rate of
50-60% during the time the volume cannot be unmounted.
    email2
This may be due to the actions of Spotlight within OS X, that is indexing
the changes on the external drive. Please review Apple's documentation for
info that disables Spotlight from indexing the drive.
    thanks for your time........

Okay - i finally solved this for myself
& for the record - i wasn't impressed with the level of advice or response offered to me in this post.
This is what i would have advised:
First how can i be talking about spotlight when im on os.3.9. Therefore how can i be sure i 'm dealing with an indexing routine ??
No-- I would have advised myself, with just a little thought, if i worked for apple
to OPEN ACTIVITY MONITIOR and see whats hogging the cpu.
And low and behold, the dreaded Norton-anti-virus 'autoprotect' was kicking in and hogging the cpu everytime i backed up or moved stuff from disk to disk.
Solution - diasable or remove NAV.

  • What can I do when Safari does not open a website?  I get a "too many redirects" message.

Safari can not open a website on my iPad. (www.rci.com)  Message received is:  "Cannot open.  Too many redirects."  What should I do?

  • What do I do when Safari is frozen?

Safari is frozen on my iPad.  I can open a new webpage but I cannot navigate through the page, highlight on it or bring up my open pages.

Try clearing Safari's cache : Settings > Safari > Clear Cache (and Clear History)
If that doesn't work then try closing Safari completely and then re-open it : from the home screen (i.e. not with Safari 'open' on-screen) double-click the home button to bring up the taskbar, then press and hold any of the apps on the taskbar for a couple of seconds or so until they start shaking, then press the '-' in the top left of the Safari app to close it, and touch any part of the screen above the taskbar so as to stop the shaking and close the taskbar.
A third option is a reset : press and hold both the sleep and home buttons for about 10 to 15 seconds (ignore the red slider), after which the Apple logo should appear - you won't lose any content, it's the iPad equivalent of a reboot

  • Pls, Determine what file's encoding when read a file use NIO

    Hi every body,
    When I use NIO (New I/O JDK1.4) to read a file's content.
How can I know exactly file's encoding (example: UTF-8, Cp1252, shift-jis ...) to choose right decoder to decode the file??
    Thanks
    Best regards.
    Hung, Nguyen Thanh.

I think there's no way to do that except...
If you are sure your files are all in japanese,
    you can use JISAutoDetect encoding.

  • What is the problem when opening jpg files using Desktop API

Hi, i would like to open jpg, or gif files using Desktop API, and the application crashes. The Desktop API is supported by my OS, because txt files, or file directories can be opened, mails can be sent, browsing is also supported.
Only jpg and gif, and i think other picture formats cannot be opened.
Obviously ACDSee and other picture viewing programs are installed in my computer.
The corresponding application code can be found at the bottom of the page of http://www.awprofessional.com/articles/article.asp?p=661371&seqNum=2&rl=1
    my code:
    if(Desktop.isDesktopSupported()){
    Desktop desktop=Desktop.getDesktop();
    try
    desktop.open (fileToOpen);
    catch (IOException ioe)
    JOptionPane.showMessageDialog (frame,
    "I/O problem");
    catch (IllegalArgumentException iae)
    JOptionPane.showMessageDialog (frame,
    "File doesnt exist");
    fileToOpen is obviously a File.
Thx for the help in advance.

My file association for jpg files is correct, if i click on a
jpg, ACDSee starts immediately.Although I am a long time Windoze non-user, I vaguely remember that there's a difference between correct file-type association being set and some application starting at a mouse click on a file icon. I also vaguely remember Windoze file-type association mechanism uses a few action-types. Java Desktop should expect a specific action-type for the association.

  • Poisoned File that Clobbers Spotlight Indexing?

Since this problem is not yet solved, for me, I'd like to post this as a new topic rather than a continuation of what is currently listed as a solved problem (http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1387104).
In short, Spotlight indexing goes on forever. It seems to get up to about 2/3 done and then dies permanently, burning 100% CPU and, curiously, preventing Time Machine from running.
This was first observed on my dual G5 machine, which I just upgraded to an 8-processor Xeon Mac Pro. My best guess is that there's some sort of "poisoned" file or directory, transferred over from the G5, that Spotlight doesn't understand and (in essence) throws Spotlight into an infinite loop.
Is there any way to see what file Spotlight indexing is currently looking at?
In the console, I see these messages that might constitute some sort of hint:
mdworker says (many occurrences of this message):
CFPropertyListCreateFromXMLData(): Old-style plist parser: missing semicolon in dictionary
    Spotlight says:
    /Source cache/Spotlight/Spotlight-398.7/menu/Application../Models/MDQueryWorker.m - MDqueryWorker startQuery:withFlags: Can't execute query 'kMDItemContentTypeTree = com.apple.application;

OK, there are no guarantees, but here is a clumsy little AppleScript I cobbled together to run through /Library/Spotlight/, running the validate command on what I think are the only two possible locations for files the command can handle. It works fine on my system which has no validation errors, but I can't say for certain what will happen on others. (It should not change anything, but the script might stop with some error I haven't considered.)
To use it, copy everything below the line into Script Editor, click the "run" button & give it 10-30 seconds to complete. If all goes well, you will get a dialog box either saying no errors were found, or one listing the files that don't pass the parse test. (Note that the line with "do shell script" in it has both single & double quotes.)
    set bad_files to ""
set importers to list folder (POSIX file "/Library/Spotlight/" as text) without invisibles
    repeat with this_importer in importers
    set my_path to ("/Library/Spotlight/" & this_importer & "/" & "Contents/") as string
    set end_path to "CodeResources"
if "CodeResources" is not in (list folder (POSIX file my_path)) then
    set my_path to (my_path & "Resources/") as string
    set end_path to "schema.xml"
    end if
    set ck_string to do shell script ("mdcheckschema '" & my_path & end_path & "'")
if ck_string does not contain "successfully parsed" then
    beep
    set bad_files to bad_files & return & ck_string
    end if
    end repeat
    if bad_files is "" then
display dialog "No errors found." buttons "OK" default button "OK"
    else
display dialog "These errors found:" & return & bad_files buttons "OK" default button "OK"
    end if

  • What happens on iCloud (ex. contacts) when multiple family members use the same Apple ID?

What happens on iCloud when multiple family members use the same Apple ID?  For example if we all choose to use iCloud for contacts, are they all merged together?  We use the same Apple ID so we can use find my iPhone to keep track of the whole family.

Of course if you are both connected to the same iCloud account you have the same contacts - what did you expect?. The contacts live on the server and are read from there by the devices; so as you've both managed to sync your contacts up to iCloud they are now inextricably mixed. You can only delete your contacts by deleting individual ones, and doing that will delete them from your phone as well.
You can only unravel this by
    1. In the iCloud contacts page at http://icloud.com, select all the contacts, click on the cogwheel icon at bottom left and choose 'Export vCard'.
    2. Sign out of System Preferences>iCloud
    3. Create a new Apple ID and open a new iCloud account with it for your own use.
    4. Import the vCard back into the iCloud contacts page.
    5. Go to http://icloud.com and sign in with the original ID. This is now his ID. Work through the contacts individually deleting the ones you don't want him to have. When done sign out and advise him to change his password.
    6. Go to the new iCloud account and delete his contacts individually.
Of course if you have also been syncing calendars and using the same email address there are problems with doing this.

  • Spotlight indexing in mail is not working when I search, since 10.4.8 combo

    Hi
I have noticed every since I installed the intel 10.4.8 combo update I have been unable to search my mail in Mail.
I assuming that it is spotlight that indexes the mail boxes. Though this only appears to be a problem when I am searching using the search box in Mail.
When I use the top right hand spotlight icon it works fine.
Does anyone know how to fix the search in Mail?
    Thanks in advance.

I mean the search box in Mail itself and when
you search how it filters down in your inbox.
Actually, if you pay closer attention to what David has told you, you will see the banner he mentions provides for searching all mailboxes or the currently selected one, not just the Inbox, & for searching on the entire message; or the from, to, or subject fields alone.
The banner appears after doing any search using Mail's search box, even ones with zero results.
David wants to know what options are selected in that banner.

  • MDS running when Spotlight indexing is off

Ok. So I have a Mid 2009 MBP running Mavericks.
When I turn indexing on, I get the endless indexing thing others have reported along with the mdsync server launch failure message repeated every 30 seconds in Console.
So, while we wait for a fix from Apple, I turned off Spotlight indexing for all volumes and then used the -a -E Terminal command to erase the indexes.
Is there a reason why the 'mds' process would still run with no indexes and indexing turned off? Sometimes the 'mds' process runs at up to 30-40% of CPU. How is this possible when it has nothing to do since indexes are gone and indexing is off?

    Step 1
If you have more than one user account, this step must be carried out as an administrator.
Triple-click anywhere in the line below on this page to select it:
    syslog -k Sender mdworker -o -k Sender mds | grep -v 'boxd\|Norm' | tail | open -ef
Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C.
Launch the Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Paste into the Terminal window by pressing the key combination command-V. I've tested these instructions only with the Safari web browser. If you use another browser, you may have to press the return key after pasting.
The command may take a noticeable amount of time to run. Wait for a new line ending in a dollar sign (“$”) to appear.
A TextEdit window will open with the output of the command. If the command produced no output, the window will be empty. Post the contents of the TextEdit window (not the Terminal window), if any — the text, please, not a screenshot. The title of the window doesn't matter, and you don't need to post that.
If any personal information appears in the output, anonymize before posting, but don’t remove the context.
    Step 2
Enter the following command as in Step 1 and post the output:
    mdutil -as | open -ef
    You can then quit Terminal.
    Step 3
Launch the Console application in the same way you launched Terminal. In the Console window, look under the heading DIAGNOSTIC AND USAGE INFORMATION on the left for crash reports related to Spotlight. If you don't see that heading, select
    View ▹ Show Log List
from the menu bar. A Spotlight crash report has a name beginning in "mds" or "mdworker" and ending in ".crash". Select the most recent such report, if any, from the System and User subcategories and post the entire contents — the text, please, not a screenshot. In the interest of privacy, I suggest that, before posting, you edit out the “Anonymous UUID,” a long string of letters, numbers, and dashes in the header of the report, if it’s present (it may not be.)
Please don’t post any other kind of diagnostic report, such as hang logs — they're very long and not helpful.

  • HT4199 What does it mean when I click on my wifi name and the bars come up but the network keeps thinking and the ipad says safari cannot open the page because it is not connected to the internet. ?

What does it mean when I click on my wifi name and it show I'm on my wifi, but the network keeps thinking and the ipad says, Safari cannot open this page because it is not connected to the internet. ?

When you click on the WiFi network name, have you also provided the password for accessing the network?  You should get a dialogue box asking you for the security information the first time you connect.
If you are not able to connect, you might want to go to Settings > General > Reset > Reset network settings.
Then go back to Settings > WiFi and select your network name again and make sure the security information is now entered correctly.
If you still cannot connect, power down the router, wait a few minutes, power up the router, with the iPad powered down the whole time, and after the router has had several minutes to stabilize power up the iPad.  See if it now connects correctly.

  • In Safari I can define what pages are loaded when I open a "New Window". How do I achieve the same in Firefox (and supress the current begavior of it opening all of the tabs that I defined as my home page all the time)?

I am returning to Firefox after having used Safari on Mac for the past year. One thing I liked about Safari was that I could define what page gets loaded when I used the File Menu command to open a new Browser Window. I defined this as opening up with my Bookmarks Menu where I then was able to select the page I wanted to go to.
I have not been able to find a way to define this in Firefox and was surprised to see that "New Window" in Firefox opens all of tabs that I've defined as my Home Page.
Is there a way to manage this?

This issue can be caused by an extension that isn't working properly.
Start Firefox in <u>[[Safe Mode|Safe Mode]]</u> to check if one of the extensions (Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Extensions) or if hardware acceleration is causing the problem (switch to the DEFAULT theme: Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Appearance).
*Do not click the Reset button on the Safe mode start window or otherwise make changes.
