What is struts-faces really aim for ?

I don't really understand what is struts-faces aim for ?
I explain myself :
Supposing that on the first hand I've got an "old" application using struts that I would like to extend, but on the other hand I wish I could use JSF for my extends...
I'll transform my "old" application in a JSF manner with the struts-faces provided and then I will create the extends of my application with "real" JSF pages ?
Am'I right ?
Thanks for your help !

Thanks for your help !Your extended pages will be "real" JavaServer Faces pages once you start using the component tags instead of the Struts HTML tags. The struts-faces library gives you the choice to continue to using Struts's other features (actions, form beans, validator framework, and eventually Tiles), in addition to JavaServer Faces components, if you want to.

    What is the latest update available for Mac OSX 10.5.8 that will allow me to get the latest update for iTunes.  I really need to update my iPhone and CAN'T!!  GRRRR!!!

    Minimally you need Snow Leopard or greater:
    Upgrade Paths to Snow Leopard, Lion, and/or Mountain Lion
    You can upgrade to Mountain Lion from Lion or directly from Snow Leopard. Mountain Lion can be downloaded from the Mac App Store for $19.99. To access the App Store you must have Snow Leopard 10.6.6 or later installed.
    Upgrading to Snow Leopard
    You can purchase Snow Leopard through the Apple Store: Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard — Apple Store (U.S.). The price is $19.99 plus tax. You will be sent physical media by mail after placing your order.
    After you install Snow Leopard you will have to download and install the Mac OS X 10.6.8 Update Combo v1.1 to update Snow Leopard to 10.6.8 and give you access to the App Store. Access to the App Store enables you to download Mountain Lion if your computer meets the requirements.
         Snow Leopard General Requirements
           1. Mac computer with an Intel processor
           2. 1GB of memory
           3. 5GB of available disk space
           4. DVD drive for installation
           5. Some features require a compatible Internet service provider;
               fees may apply.
           6. Some features require Apple’s iCloud services; fees and
               terms apply.
    Upgrading to Lion
    If your computer does not meet the requirements to install Mountain Lion, it may still meet the requirements to install Lion.
    You can purchase Lion by contacting Customer Service: Contacting Apple for support and service — this includes international calling numbers. The cost is $19.99 (as it was before) plus tax.  It's a download. You will get an email containing a redemption code that you then use at the Mac App Store to download Lion. Save a copy of that installer to your Downloads folder because the installer deletes itself at the end of the installation.
         Lion System Requirements
           1. Mac computer with an Intel Core 2 Duo, Core i3, Core i5, Core i7,
               or Xeon processor
           2. 2GB of memory
           3. OS X v10.6.6 or later (v10.6.8 recommended)
           4. 7GB of available space
           5. Some features require an Apple ID; terms apply.
    Upgrading to Mountain Lion
    To upgrade to Mountain Lion you must have Snow Leopard 10.6.8 or Lion installed. Purchase and download Mountain Lion from the App Store. Sign in using your Apple ID. Mountain Lion is $19.99 plus tax. The file is quite large, over 4 GBs, so allow some time to download. It would be preferable to use Ethernet because it is nearly four times faster than wireless.
         OS X Mountain Lion — System Requirements
           Macs that can be upgraded to OS X Mountain Lion
             1. iMac (Mid 2007 or newer) — Model Identifier 7,1 or later
             2. MacBook (Late 2008 Aluminum, or Early 2009 or newer) —
                 Model Identifier 5,1 or later
             3. MacBook Pro (Mid/Late 2007 or newer) — Model Identifier 3,1 or later
             4. MacBook Air (Late 2008 or newer) — Model Identifier 2,1 or later
             5. Mac mini (Early 2009 or newer) — Model Identifier 3,1 or later
             6. Mac Pro (Early 2008 or newer) — Model Identifier 3,1 or later
             7. Xserve (Early 2009) — Model Identifier 3,1 or later
    To find the model identifier open System Profiler in the Utilities folder. It's displayed in the panel on the right.
    Are my applications compatible?
             See App Compatibility Table — RoaringApps.

  • What average audio level do most users aim for?

    I have read Ken Stone's page on audio in FCP, where he recommends an average audio level of -12 dB for most work with DV. Is this what most people here aim for?
    I have bought a lot of background music files, and when initially brought in, mostly they stay in the general area of -12 dB, though some are a little louder. When audio from my video footage is added, they almost always go into the yellow and even occasionally into the red areas. There are many booms and explosions in my footage, and these always go all the way into the red area for a second or two. Is this acceptable? If I reduce the volume of these, the booms and explosions get lost in the music.
    Thanks for any advice.

    Hi Bob,
    As far as I know, Apple's reference level is -12db and it's what I think most people target. Audio that goes into the yellow shouldn't be any cause for worry, but material that consistently goes up to or beyond 0db is a problem. For what it's worth, professionals typically target a -20db digital reference level.
    In your case you have sound with a wide dynamic range but, since it's booms & explosions, if you're not hearing any noticeable distortion on playback I wouldn't worry about those transient sounds.
    You could try reducing your background music level to about -20db and then cut back the level of your booms/explosions a bit to keep them out of the red. Hopefully that way they won't get as lost in the background music.

    I did think about that and if I have to I will do that, however there are about 50 songs. I have closed and reopened iTunes several times and I am sure that I have the latest version. It fails right away but I can click on the cloud download icon and download the song that it failed on ... therefore it is not that song "or any one song" causing the issue. Any ideas?

  • Issue in converting Struts view to JSF view using struts-faces integration

    Hi All,
    I am facing a issue in my Sruts to JSF conversion application using struts-faces.jar integration library.
    Need expert's help desperately as I am not able to use <s:form> tag in my new jsf page to call a struts action.
    I want to call a struts action from my web page designed using JSF,
    but it seems impossible without using <s:form> tag from struts-faces integration library.
    Please suggest how to resolve this...
    I am using WSAD 5.1 IDE with inbuilt Test environment WebSphere server
    JSF Version: Sun's RI 1.1
    Struts framework: 1.2.6
    Struts-Faces Integration Library version: 1.0
    I have configured a controller element in struts-config.xml file as has been suggested by different online
    documents I studied:
    <controller>
    <set-property property="processorClass"
    value="org.apache.struts.faces.application.FacesRequestProcessor"/>
    </controller>
    But configuring a controller does not allow my test server to start up properly and due to errors the ActionServlet also becomes unavailable.
    If I comment the controller and start the test server it starts fine but then I cannot access the converted jsf page which contains the <s:form action="/xxxxx.do"> tag.
    If now I get back to <h:form> tag instead of <s:form> tag with a <h:commandButton action="xxxx.do"/> for form submission in my jsf page, I see the html page generated with all components but now checking the html source generated I see
    <form action="/contextName/jspFolder/sameDisplayedPage.jsf"> which is not valid and never gets called successfully.
    I think someways I need to use the <s:form> tag with the controller configured properly to use the struts-faces integration library's request processor, to get things working. But HOW???
    Following is the error I get if I use the <controller> tag element in struts-config.xml file and start the server.
    This error appears on starting the server without accessing any application's jsp web page

    <h:form>
    <h:commandButton id="submit" action="xxxx.do" value="Submit" />
    I see the webpage coming up in the browser (no controller element used in struts-config.xml file this time)
    But in the html source of this html created from jsf I see
    <form id="_id2" method="post" action="/training2/jsp/welcomeF.faces" enctype="application/x-www-form-urlencoded">
    here form's action attribute is pointing to the same displayed page with the context name prefixed. I

    Below is the simple struts jsp page which I need to convert to jsf page as I am converting only the View part of application.
    I want to use the same struts beans and application logic at the back-end. At front-end I need UIComponents from JSF to be used.
    Following is the struts jsp page

    <html:form action="validateUser.do">

    <html:submit property="submit" value="Show info via Struts" />

    I've managed to get this working Ok from JDeveloper:
    See:
    http://www.groundside.com/blog/content/DuncanMills/J2EE+Development/?permalink=573FDB6F8D918B9704907899635CABB1.txt
    http://www.groundside.com/blog/content/DuncanMills/J2EE+Development/?permalink=2B04ACE99A6437EDED775F15553D1DED.txt
    Basically you just have to fiddle around with Library settings to get this working OK.
    As to how useful this is, well that's up to you - I'd not regard Faces + Struts as a must use combination, rather it's a can mix if you really need to. Look at Faces and Faces navigation first and see if that actually gives you enough before you start to look at mixing.

  • Problem with struts-faces.jar

    hi,
    My requirement is to migrate a struts application to jsf.
    I am using the struts-faces.jar and doing all the configurations as mentioned.I am getting the following error while calling the application itself..
    java.lang.ClassNotFoundException: org.apache.struts.faces.taglib.LifecycleListener
    I am using the following version:
    1)Tried both struts-faces-0.4 and 0.3(downloaded from http://archive.apache.org/dist/struts/struts-faces/)
    2)Tomcat 5.0
    3)jsf-(SUN)
    4)struts 1.1
    Please let me know if i am doing something wrong. and any ways to fix this.
    Regards,
    Mythili

    Given the new release of the JSF ri and api .jar
    files,
    will this .jar provided at the apache site work?
    http://archive.apache.org/dist/jakarta/struts/old/relea
    e/struts-faces/
    No, those JARs only work with the EA versions of JavaServer Faces.
    A nightly build of the struts-faces integration library, that works with the beta release, is available at:
    http://cvs.apache.org/builds/jakarta-struts/nightly/struts-faces/
    and the corresponding source code is part of the Struts nightly build bundles in:
    http://cvs.apache.org/builds/jakarta-struts/nightly/src/
    in directory "contrib/struts-faces".
    This package is not yet ready to be released, but seems to work for me in all the cases where the old library worked before. (If you're migrating, note particularly some tweaks you need to add in the struts-config.xml file for the new version, documented in README.txt.) Work continues on the Tiles integration which feedback has indicated is really important to people.
    Developers who are building new components and renderers will be quite interested in the techniques used to make all the attributes of your own components value-binding-enalbled (like all the ones on the standard tags are). The source code for the <s:form> tag, plus the corresponding component and renderer, will be helpful in illustrating this.

  • Struts-faces LifeCycle

    I am studying Struts-Faces to conclude how we can use Struts-faces to prepare the migration from struts to JSF. When a request is sent by user, is it handle by ActionServlet or Faces servlet or another servlet ? I am trying to constitute the LifeCycle for an application done by Struts-faces.
    Can anyone help me ?
    Thanks.

    when you say " the requests will be handled by the
    JavaServer Faces controller servlet " you want mean
    that any http request will first be handled by
    "javax.faces.webapp.FacesServlet" anf after will be
    redirected depending on the type of request (struts or
    JSF) ? Technically, it's not a redirect, or even a forward ... in struts-faces the default ActionListener supplied by JavaServer Faces is replaced by one that invokes the Struts request processor if this is a form submit.
    who invoke the "FacesRequestProcessor" ? what is the
    role of this class ? it is invoked by ActionServlet
    instead of RequestProcessor ?
    In the current struts-faces code, ActionServlet does not ever process any requests, but you still need it to set up the overall environment, which is done in it's init() method.
    As I said before I try to constitute the life cycle of
    Struts-faces application, What I have understand of
    you answer is that the Http request is handle by a
    front controller ( Web Container ?????) and then
    redirected to :
    ---Lifecycle of JSF if it is an immediate action, or
    we are NOT nested in a Struts form
    -- FacesRequestProcessor if wa are processing a form
    submit.
    Yes, but the JavaServer Faces runtime still handles all incoming requests (unless you are intermixing non-Faces-based use of Struts in the same webapp) -- it just calls the FacesRequestProcessor when appropriate.
    I read the article of IBM "integrating Struts, Tiles
    and JavaServerFaces and I don 't understand clearly
    how we use the class "FormComponent" and "FormRag".
    Can you give me more explanation please ?
    Thanks Craig .I can't speak for the authors of that article, or what they did to integrate Tiles support into the EA4 release of struts-faces. I can tell you that such measures will not be needed when the version of struts-faces compatible with the final version of JavaServer Faces 1.0. Until then, you are looking at code that is bleeding edge, not released, not documented, and not thoroughly tested. When released, it will be documented and tested.

  • What are Struts and how it is used in SAP

    Hi
    can anyone give a idea that what are struts and how it is used in SAP
    Regards
    JM

    Hi John,
    In this case google.com really us your friend - Struts is not an SAP technology, rather it is an MVC development paradigm (love using that word for Java.  There are lots of useful websites with generic information around struts as well as a number of good books available from Amazon for instance.
    As far as Struts and SAP goes - SAP use Struts for their Internet Sales CRM Webshop application.  Of course, like anything else from SAP it has been modified slightly but is essentially the same.

  • Struts-faces library: provided struts/tiles example doesn't work?!

    Dear all,
    Ive been trying to migrate my struts-tiles application to JavaServer Faces using the struts-faces library. I downloaded the latest nightly build, but I was unable to deploy and run the second example (the one using tiles) on Tomcat 5.0.28.
         At first, the <h:commandLink> components for the Register and Login links on the first page (loggedoff.jsp) wouldnt work, probably because they should have been replaced by <s:commandLink>. So I fixed that, but then I get an inexplicable http 404 error: Invalid path /layout was requested when I click on any of the two links.
         Looking at the source code of both JSP and HTML I noticed that the JSP element <s:form action="/editRegistration"> translates to <form id="menu:_id5" name="registrationForm" action="/StrutsFacesExample/layout.do" method="post">. The action element is obviously(?) wrong: there is no layout.do action mapping anywhere, its the path pointing to the main layout jsp with the suffix replaced!
    Ive been able to trace the problem down to method action in library class org.apache.struts.faces.renderer.FormRenderer, which does the following:
    protected String action(FacesContext context, UIComponent component) {
    String actionURL =
    context.getApplication().getViewHandler().
    getActionURL(context, context.getViewRoot().getViewId());
    if (log.isTraceEnabled()) {
    log.trace("getActionURL(" + context.getViewRoot().getViewId() +
    ") --> " + actionURL);
    return (context.getExternalContext().encodeActionURL(actionURL));
    Any ideas on what could be going wrong here? I also tried deploying the example on Tomcat 5.5.7 and JBoss 3.2.5, but the behavior was the same.
    Any comments would be greatly appreciated!
    Mario

    Did you ever find a solution to this problem? No, unfortunately I am still looking for a solution to this one.
    I ve also reported this to Bugzilla (http://issues.apache.org/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=35265) so you might want to keep an eye on the issue, in case something comes up. However there appears to be no significant activity in the librarys source code repository for almost a month.
    After reading other discussions in forums like this one, I must say that I am discouraged: I seriously doubt if anyone has successfully managed to use the struts-faces integration library. A lot of people are suggesting that integrating the two frameworks is not worth the trouble, and so I am now in the process of evaluating the cost of complete migration from struts to jsf (btw, it doesnt look good). Nevertheless, some recent articles demonstrate the librarys use (the most recent one is Kito Manns http://www.jsfcentral.com/reading/#4030 ) so I might be wrong.
    It would be nice though if someone who has managed to integrate the two technologies successfully would share his views on this forum

  • What's the best protective shield for my 3GS?

    Hi Everyone,
    Sorry to bother, but I just got a new iPhone 3GS and I'm wondering what's the best protector to put on the phone. I understand the 3GS has a new type of "coating" on the screen so I don't want to do any damage to it. I also heard the 3GS has these proximity sensors so I don't want to get a case that will interfere with that. Anyhow, I wanted to get an Invisible Shield, a full body one, but wanted to make sure I don't do damage to the phone. I've read the forums and it seems there is no definitive answer on whether or not the Invisible Shield is the best one. Any iPhone experts know what's the best protective shield for the 3GS? And will the Invisible Shield do any damage to the screen or coating on the new 3GS? I talked to a person at Apple and they didn't think it would do any damage, but to be honest, she didn't sound as knowledgeable as I would like. I'm sorry for being paranoid. Can you guys chime in?
    Thanks!

    The reason for no definite answer is that it matters what YOU are looking for in a case or protective screen cover...
    To answer your shield question...the shield product itself will not damage the phone and that coating is not to prevent scratches...it's to help prevent fingerprints...since you plan to put a screen cover on then that coating doesn't really matter...HOWEVER, the way that the shield can harm the phone is IF it's not properly installed by YOU...since the design of that product calls for a liquid solution agent to be used to adhere the cover to the case of the phone, others have gone overboard with that liquid and then ended up with water damaged phones due to the faulty install...If you install properly then it's not an issue
    Personally I used a full shield cover on a previous phone and hated it...so again it's all up to your taste...
    What I currently have now is the simple Apple sold Anti-Glare screen cover you can buy two to a pack for 15.00 at Apple store...I have used since first Gen iPhone and loved it...
    I have a Case-Mate leather hard plastic case but am not thrilled with it since the edges are raised around the edges of the screen and sometimes prevent me from hitting a button right up against the screen edge...so I don't use it much...
    Other covers made by Case-Mate like the Barely There cover don't have that problem...so you really need to shop around and see what case you like and what you dislike...
    Cases specifically sold to be compatible with 3GS will not interfere with either the proximity or any other sensor on the phone face...

  • Satellite Pro P100: What is the Toshiba part number for a 2GB memory module

    Unable to find any way of emailing this question so I have posted it on the forum. Sure this info should be more readily available without having to ask.
    What is the Toshiba part number for a 2GB memory module for a PSPA4E-00F007. That's for a Satellite Pro P100 T2400
    http://uk.computers.toshiba-europe.com/cgi-bin/ToshibaCSG/jsp/SUPPORTSECTION/discontinuedProductPage.do?service=UK&BV_UseBVCook ie=yes&PRODUCT_ID=115421
    Crucial Memory gives me this module - is that correct?

    Would really appreciate some official clarification here.
    Many Thanks

    It must be PA3513U-1M2G. You must check if this module is compatible with your notebook model. I think so.
    Anyway I recommend you to buy high quality product like Kingston modules.

  • HT202696 What happens if Apple Support expires for a product?  Does it mean there is no more help available and you are on your own just because you have an older Apple product?

    We have a family of Apple products at home, and with every new one, we learn a new aspect of the Apple Life.  After switching to iPhone 5S and struggling between some applications, I've decided it is time to upgrade rest of my older devices requesting an IOS Upgrade to 8.1.2 for weeks.
    My older iPhone 4 didn't have an upgrade, which was not advanced enough anymore to carry a new software, this I understand.  The upgraded iPod Touch and iPad Mini don't seem to have any problems with the recent changes so far.  However, the older iPad (2) we had is messed up, just like many other people's as mentioned on the pages of these discussion groups.  According to these user comments / complaints, it is obvious that upgrading to IOS 8.1.2 was not the right option to older version iPads just like it was not for iPhone 4; actually it shouldn't be an option in the first place.
    On my previous problems with iPhone 5S, I've come to realise the practicality & functionality of the Apple Support system when contacted directly, instead of going through many discussion pages of people with same or similar problems where everybody is asking but just a few is replying.  So, I wanted to give it a try to find a solution to my recent problems with iPad, but this time Apple Support pages replied with "Technical Support & Service Coverage are both Expired" message.
    First, I did not know that Apple supported its users personally, and I loved it.  Maybe this is because I didn't have previous problems with my old iPhone and iPad.  Especially the Apple Support - Chat option I preferred, where I got help step-by-step from Apple operators.  And then, I did not know that this service support was only for my devices until an expiration date, and this did not please me much.
    Can anyone enlighten me on how to receive any response from Apple about what to do with problems of an old Apple device?

    And as far as paying for phone support, here are a few tips:
    If you call your carrier first and then they route you to Apple, you usually don't have to pay for phone support.
    If you are talking to Apple and they ask you to pay a support fee, ask if you can get an exception this time.  That usually works once, but they keep track of the times you've been granted such an exception.
    If you still end up paying the support fee, that fee only applies if it's not a hardware related issue.  In other words, if it can be fixed by just talking over the phone and following Apple's instructions, then the fee applies.  But if your device is deemed to have a hardware failure that caused the issue, then the fee should not apply, and you can ask for it to be waived after the fact.
    This forum is free, and almost all of the technical support articles the Apple tech advisors use are available on this website.  Literally 99% of what they can do over the phone is just walking you through the publicly available support articles.  In other words, you're paying the fee to have them do your research for you.  It's like hiring a research consultant to go look stuff up in the public library so you don't have to.  You're capable of doing it; you'd just rather pay someone to do it for you.
    It's like Starbucks.  You know how to make coffee.  Everyone knows how to make coffee.  And Starbucks coffee isn't any better than what you could make at home for far less.  But you want the convenience.  So you're really paying a convenience fee.  Milk is more expensive at 7-Eleven than it is at the grocery store... because it's a convenience store.

  • What's the best storage solution for a large iLife? RAID? NAS?

    I'm looking for an affordable RAID storage solution for my Time Machine, iTunes Library, iMovie videos, and iPhoto Library. To this point I've been doing a hodgepodge of external hard drives without the saftey of redundancy and I've finaly been bitten with HD failures. So I'm trying to determine what would be the best recommendation for my scenario. Small Home Office for my wife's business (just her), and me with all our media. I currentlty have a mid-2010 Mac Mini (no Thunderbolt), she has an aging 2007 iMac and 2006 MacBook Pro (funny that they're all about the same benchmark speed). We have an AppleTV (original), iPad2 and two iPhone 4S's.
    1st Question: Is it better to get a RAID and connect it to my Airport Extreme Base Station USB port as a shared disk? OR to connect it directly to my Mac Mini and share through Home Sharing? OR Should I go with a NAS RAID?
    2nd Question: Simple is Better. Should I go with a Mac Mini Server and connect drives to it? (convert my Mac Mini into a server) or Should I just get one of those nice all-in-one 4-bay RAID drive solutions that I can expand with?
    Requirements:
    1. Expandable and Upgradeable. I don't want something limited to 2TB drives, but as drives get bigger and cheaper I want to easily throw one in w/o concerns.
    2. Simple integration with Time Machine and my iLife: iTunes, iMovie, iPhoto. If iTune's Home Sharing feature is currently the best way of using my media across multiple devices then why mess with it? I see "DLNA certified" storage on some devices and wonder if that would just add another layer of complexity I don't need. One more piece to make compatible.
    3. Inexpensive. I totally believe in the "You Get What You Pay For" concept. But I also realize sometimes I'm buying marketing, not product. I imagine that to start, I'm going to want a diskless system (because of $$$) to throw all my drives into, and then upgrade bigger drives as my data and funds grow.
    4. Security. I don't know if its practical, but I like the idea of being able to pop two drives out and put them in my safe and then pop them back in once a week for the backup/mirroring. I like this idea because I'm concerned that onsite backup is not always the safest. Unfortunately those cloud based services aren't designed for Terabytes of raw family video, or an entire media library that isn't wholey from the iTunes Store. I can't be the only one facing this challenge. Surely there's an affordable way to keep a safe backup for the average Joe. But what is it?
    5. Not WD. I've had bad experiences with Western Digital drives, and I loathe their consumer packaged backup software that comes preloaded on their external drives. They are what I meant when I say you get what you pay for. Prettily packed garbage.
    6. Relatively Fast. I have put all my media on an external drive before (back when it fit on one drive) and there's noticeable spool-up hang time. Thunderbolt's nice and all, but so new that its not easily available across devices, nor is it cheap. eSata is not really an option. I love Firewire but I'm getting the feeling that Apple has made it the red-headed step-child of connections. USB 3.0 looks decent, but like eSata, Apple doesn't recognize it exists. Where does that leave us? Considering this dilemma I really liked Seagate's GoFlex external drives because it meant I could always buy a new base and still be compatible. But that only works with single drives. And as impressive as Seagate is, we can't expect them to consistently double drive sizes every two years like they have been -cool as that may be.
    So help me out without getting too technical. What's the best setup? Is it Drobo? Thecus? ReadyNAS? Seagate's BlackArmor? Or something else entirely?
    All comments are appreciated. Thanks in advance.

    I am currently using WD 2TB Thunderbolt hard drive for my iTunes, which i love and is works great.  i am connected directly to my Mac Book Pro. I am running low on Memory and thinking of buying a bigger Hard drive.  My question is should I buy 6TB thunderbolt HD or 6TB NAS drive to work solely for iTunes.  I have home sharing enabled for my Apple TV
    I also have my time capsule connected just as back up only.

  • What is the best Compressor setting for best quality video playback on an iBook g4?

    I know the iBook and G4's in general are very outdated today, but I need to ask anyways. I have some video projects in 720p and 1080p in which I have down converted to 480p and also exported to MPEG-2 for DVD (personal wedding videos and videos made for my clients using Final Cut Studio). Anything encoded at most resolutions using h264 won't play on my iBook. Even 480p.
    I have about 20 hours of mixed video content that I need it in a format that is suitable for an iPhone 4 and an iBook 12" with a 1.2GHz G4, 1.25GB RAM and I added a 250 WD 5400 IDE hard disk (running 10.5.8 and 10.4.11 for Classic Mode). I know the iBook doesn't seem like the best tool for modern video playback, but I need to figure out which setting will play best with iPhone 4 and iBook so I don't need to make 2 local copies of each video for each device.
    The iBook plays best with the original DVD output MPEG-2 file and playing back in QT Pro or VLC... but I already have 180 GB's of MPEG-2 files now and my little HD is almost full. I don't have enough room to convert all the iPhone 4 counterparts. If I use Compressor 3.5.3, what is the optimal setting for iBook and iPhone .m4v or .mp4 files that can play on both devices? So far 720x400-480 widescreen videos @ 29fps works great on my iPhone, Apple TV 2, and other computers but seems to murder my poor iBook if encoded with high profile (and still choppy on simple profiles). 640x480 (adding black matte bars to my videos) plays fine in MPEG-2 but drops frames or goes to black screen if I convert it to mp4 (and looks bad on the iPhone 4 because of the matte). But if I convert on any of the simple profiles, it looks terrible on my iPhone 4 and a blocky on the iBook.
    This is the problem leading me to having 2 copies of each video and eating my hard disk space. What is the best video setting for both playback on the iBook and iPhone 4? Can the iBook playback H264 at all in decent resolutionsat all? I don't really want to have a 480p .m4v collection for the iPhone 4 and a MPEG-2 RAW collection just to play the same videos on the iBook.
    Any suggestions are greatly appreciated! Thanks!

    Update: The iBook can play any 480p video and higher if I encode them with DivX and in AVI format. But of course this is not compatible with my iPhone 4. At least I can shrink my library now and get away from the full MPEG-2s. I don't get why I can't use Apple's h264 though. There has to be a setting I am missing. The sample Apple h264 videos from the days of Tiger worked flawlessly on my iBook when it was new so the CPU must be capable of decoding it. I really can't understand this.
    Also, since I made my videos in English for my family, I had to create soft subtitles for my wife's Chinese family, and I can't get players like QT with perian or MPlayerX to sync them properly to an AVI encoded with DivX, they only sync well with the iPhone 4 m4v/mp4 formatted files I made. This is a real pickle.
    So now I may need three or four copies of each video, LOL. I need to hardcode the subtitles if I want to use AVI to playback on older machines, and keep the mp4 file for the iDevices too, while keeping higher quality h264 videos for my American relatives...
    If h264 is compatible with my iBook, what is the proper encoding settings? Must I dramatically lower the settings or frame rate? I can settle on 2 copies of each video that way. One iBook/G4/eMac compatible video that syncs correctly with my srt soft subs, and another version that works well with my iPhone 4 and iPad.
    All in all, I will end up with more than 3 or 4 version of each video. On my late G5 dual core I have the full 720-1080p uncompressed master files. On my i5 iMac I have the h264 compressed versions for distribution, and lower versions for my iDevices. Now I need to keep either full MPEG-2 files for the iBook to play, or convert to older formats like DivX AVI for our family's legacy machines. I am running out of hard disk space quick now, LOL.
    Is there an easier way?
