What is synced from my iPod touch to iTunes when I transfer purchases?

I clicked to go ahead with updating software for iPod Touch (4th gen), but got a warning that I should first transfer all purchased items from iPod to iTunes Library. I don't know that much about iPod, so I would appreciate an answer: what does this mean? I see that when I look at the iPod part of iTunes sidebar there is a category called "Purchased," and in it are various items, all of them PDFs I think, that were not purchased but just saved attachments from emails, which show up in the iBooks app. However I have purchased a few apps for the iTouch. Will I lose my PDFs if I don't drag them into somewhere in the upper Library section of the iTunes window? But where, then? The categories are only Music, Movies, TV Shows, Podcasts, Apps and Radio. These files are none of the above.
(My actual, real purchases-- i.e., a few apps, are already in iTunes' Library>Apps section so I assume these are not the purchases referred to in the download warning.)

You can't. Mobile devices are not set up to transfer most items to a computer and if that's what you want to do (with the noted exception) then you have to pay for it.

Your i-device was not designed for unique storage of your media. It is not a backup device and media transfer was designed for you maintaining a master copy of your media on a computer which is itself properly backed up against loss. Syncing is one way, computer to device, updating the device content to the content on the computer, not updating or restoring content on a computer. The exception is iTunes Store purchased content.

Lines 136 & 137 deal with updating the Last Played and Last Skipped values. I initially suspected the error could be being caused by null values in one of the fields which I didn't encounter in testing, however the same values are accessed previously in lines 129 & 131. Ideally I'd work out exactly what causes the error so I can test for the problem issue rather than throw the error, handle those circumstances in the most sensible way given the aim of the script, and continue to process non-error causing values as is.
The quick alternative is to ignore the error by placing an On Error Resume Next statement before the possibly probablematic code, and an On Error Goto 0 statement after it to resume normal error handling. I.e.
On Error Resume Next

On Error Goto 0
Not always a good idea but in this case I suspect "Do nothing" would be the appropiate action in those cases that currently cause an error so I've made that change and posted up the new build of SyncStats. Let me know how you get on.

okay, I read a lot of questions in a similar format but nothing has helped. Here is my situation and what I have done.
I have an iPod Touch and my computer crashed, I had to restore my system completly. I thought I had backed up my iTunes but I did not back up all of my content. However, the music I did not back up are on my iPod. How can I put my music from my iPod to my iTunes WITHOUT erasing my music I have on my iPod? Some of the music on my iPod I do not have anymore so I can't erase my music I have on my iPod.
I tried to "authorized" my computer/iTunes to my iPod but a pop up came up and said my computer was "already authorized". I also tried to back up my iPod but that did not do anything. I also went under iTunes and checked marked "manually manage music" but nothing works.
What can I do?

After the upgrade to iTunes 11.0.1.2 I am unable to find a way to force a manual sync for my iPod Touch. Also, some of the podcasts seem not to go into the proper folders, they wind up in an "unkown album" folder after downloading. If you have iTunes 11 turn on the Sidebar. Go to iTunes>View and click on Show Sidebar. You can also do a Crtl+S to show the sidebar and Control+B to show the Menu bar

No body knows about the next gen of any Apple products, other than they always advance. There are still many much older products in successful use so that should not be a problem. My iPad original cannot use iOS 6.1.3 but it still does what I want and works great.
If you have the 4th gen, use it aa long as it meets your needs. If it doesn't look at the options for a new one at that time.

Is there a way of getting all my songs from my iPod to my itunes, not just the purchased ones?

Basically, our computer crashed not long ago, and since then we have had all the stuff from our old computer taken and put on the admin of a our new computer. However, my music files seem to have disappeared, including the ones that were in Windows Media Player that were also on my iPod (a nano). I connected my iPod to iTunes after downloading it from the Apple website, but only the songs I have purchased from iTunes Store have been transfered to the iTunes library. We can't recommend a product, but we can point you to the direction of iLounge which they will know what currenty works to bring all your files off your iDevice back into iTunes.
I also have some recovery options and advice here:
Recovery options:
A: If Windows isn't booting:
You need to boot the computer from a "recovery disk or USB" that has a operating system on it and a graphical user interface to transfer files from your boot drive to a external drive.
I suggest using the Easy USB Installer to install Ubuntu 10.10 onto a 2-4 GB USB key.

burn a ISO of Ubuntu 10.10 or PartedMagic to a cd-r with ImgBurn or Win 7 right click and burn
You can use Disk Utility in OS X to select the ISO and burn to cd/dvd as well.
Once you have it installed, consult this page for your BIOS boot key to hold to get into the BIOS.

Plug the USB into the back (if possible) of the computer, connect the external drive and enter the BIOS, set the USB (or CD) as first boot and SAVE.
Boot off the USB/CD and "Try Ubuntu/Run from disk" DON'T INSTALL. (Parted Magic loads into RAM and ejects CD)
Once in, go under the menu Places > Computer and transfer your files to the external drive just like you would in Windows, drag and drop.
(If using Parted Magic double click on the Mount Drive left icon twice, use the two GUI windows to transfer files to external drive, unmount drives, log out/quit in the lower left corner menu option)
B: If the computer hardware isn't working, but the drive might still work:
You'll have to remove the power cord and manually extract the hard drive. This might result in some damage.
There is a powered IDE/SATA to USB adapter for sale online for $20 that you can take that internal hard drive and use it like a external drive to access your files from another Windows machine.
C: If your iTunes content is deleted...
It might be recoverable if it hasn't been overwritten yet by fresh data. Undelete software works by reading the 1's and 0's of the files themselves, not what the OS says.
You need to use undelete software pre-installed before the iTunes content was deleted, or while on a bootable cd/USB and a external drive to transfer the recovered files.
You can also install undelete type software on a new machine and USE STEP B above to "undelete" the files and recover them directly to the new computer.
You can't install undelete software or recover files to the same drive your attempting to recover from or it overwrites the deleted data.
D: If the hard drive doesn't work and...
The data isn't worth spending $2000-$3000 in a ATTEMPT at platter dissection recovery, then your finished
If the data on the drive was encrypted, data recovery efforts may be futile, unless it's a encypted file and you transfer it successfuly and have the password to de-crypt it.
E: If you have a "iDevice" with any content
It can be synced back into iTunes, check at iLounge what third party software works reliably now and for your version.
Once you log into your iTunes account, you can sync ONLY iTunes purchased content back from a iDevice
Third party software can recover just about all the items on a iDevice, regardless of it's origin. (can't recommend such software here)
F: If any of the above is too hard, or the data is of "critical importance"
Then seek professional computer or forensic level recovery services.
Get help from someone who has done this sort of thing repeatly and can almost guaranty 100% results.
There is Linux software that can "rip" all data off a iOS device if that level of attention is needed, seek a professional service.

The music sync is one way only - computer to ipod. The exception is itunes purchases. Without syncing: File>Transfer Purchases

To all those having issues syncing their new iPod touch to iTunes:

Do me a favor and try downloading doubletwist from www.doubletwist.com. I was having issues with itunes telling me it couldn't sync music/videos/photos (but it could apps) with my new 32 GB ipod touch 3rd gen so I shipped it back to Amazon earlier this week.
Most other itune replacement software didn't support the new OS 3.0 and I didn't know how long they would take. I just got an update from doubletwist they now support the latest touch and iphones. I obviously can't try it out.
But if several people try this (make sure to check for latest version), and it allows them to transfer music/videos while Apple have their collective heads up their *****, I will reconsider purchasing it again. I love my new HTC Hero, but it just doesn't cut it as a replacement.

Slowed my computer down to unusability, missing (or hidden so I couldn't find them) things I consider key features (tag editing, smart playlists, podcasts). Doesn't appear to do anything I can't already do with iTunes. The Amazon Downloader already adds any of my purchases to my iTunes library.
Oh, and it never recognized my Touch (3.1.2) so I don't know how it would have worked. Would it have synced? Or would I have been stuck with tediously dragging and dropping things?
Given what it did to my computer, I'm unlikely to spend much time trying to get it to work. Perhaps it works better on a Windows box but I don't think I want to subject my low horsepower netbook to it.
