What is system Copy

Hello all,
I need to know what system copy is.I am in development area so will not be able to understand some of the terminology if jargons are used.I need to know,
What happens when a new system is set up by sytem copy.Is the only repository replicated or even the client independant and client dependant data is copied.
What happens with regards to the transactional data.Is it important for the new system or a test system to have equally good hardware requirements?
Is client copy also required after system copy? if so, why?
Please also indicate how i will be able to self learn about the concept.i do not need the installation guides or procedure to do a system copy.
I will surely reward points for a good explanation.
Regards,
Rahul

Hello Rahul,
There are two different types of System Copy, a Homogeneous System Copy and a Heterogeneous System Copy.
In a homogeneous system the database and operating system stay the same. By stay the same i mean you do not move from Oracle to MSSQL or Windows to AIX. This does not mean you cant move between versions, Oracle 9 to Oracle 10 or Windows 2000 to Windows 2003 is still a Homogeneous system copy.
There are two ways to perform a homogeneous system copy, an import and export method via sapinst and R3load, or a copy using a DB Specific method which will depend on the type of system you are trying to copy.
A heterogeneous system copy is the opposite, here either your Operating System and or Database are changed. You can only perform this sort of system copy using the import and export method as sapisnt must perform conversions on your data.
At its most basic level a system copy is a way to take a complete copy of an existing system, and move it to new hardware. It is also a useful way of creating a Test system which will accurately reflect a production system.
Your best source of information for a system copy can be found at http:
service.sap.com\systemcopy
Hopefully this answers your question,
Regards,
David

• Activating data in DSO got dump SAPSQL_EMPTY_TABNAME after BW system copy

Hi all,
We had an issue after system copy.
After a system copy the data in the standard DSOs(all of them) cannot be activated. The DOSs themselves are active, the transformations are active but if one attempts to load data and activate u2013 it does not work. The job terminates with shortdump SAPSQL_EMPTY_TABNAME.
Found the issue is caused by u201Cmore than one versionu201D of the change log.
We tried the Program RSAR_RSTSODS_CHANGELOG_VRS but it didn't work.
We had the solution like this:
After activating the DSO itself(the object) using RSDG_ODSO_ACTIVATE the issue disappears and the data can be activated. Issue also disappears. BUT Drawback: Activating the DSO causes the transformations to deactivate. Then we used the program RSDG_TRFN_ACTIVATE to activate all transformations. And then the issue disappeared.
Want to know what the root cause for this. From some SDN threads, mentioned BDLS job in the post refresh steps are not correctly done during system copy may cause this issue. How did the BDLS run wrongly cause this issue? And what is the exact correct way? We ran BDLS for each source systems inlcuding the target refreshed BW system itself by the default selection - conversion of Client-Dependent and Client-Independent Tables; because we used database copy
for the system refresh.
We also restored all source systems in RSA1 inlcuding the refreshed BW system own in the post-refresh steps.
Thank you very much for your information and suggestion.
Heming

Hi Arun, as you say two change log tables it´s strange. In fact in my opinion it´s not right but the problem is that the second change log table appears after executing std SAP report RSDG_ODSO_ACTIVATE in order to be able to activate the DSO. So the solution provided by SAP it works but i´m not sure if the right one. Besides this the original change log table is full of data while the second one is empty... for new loads which are gonna a be filled  by the activation process ? I suppose the second one... will this have some impact with the data stored in the first one... not in theory but.... i do not feel confortable with the consequences of this report.
And the most important, it seems that the reason why the DSO and the change log table had problems is due to a some problems or missing steps after executing the BDLS after BW system refresh but nobody can confirm this point...
So, i´ve been able to solve the issue but now i have two change log tables for the same DSO.
Anybody has the same situation after executing the above mentioned SAP std report ?

• PI 7.11 sp6 system copy causes target sys to register with source

Experts,
We have a PI 7.1 (EHP1, sp6) PI system based on AIX 6.1 OS and Oracle 11g.
I recently did the standard PI system copy from a prod source (PIP) to a training target (PIT).
I used the most recenty PI system copy guide that is specific for PI 7.1 EHP1
I did not run into any major problems doing the steps of the itself.
I did the usual "post" steps, documented in the guide that really are done on any NW system.
Then I got into the specific "PI" post steps and that's where I now have a problem.
I could not run the "wizard for post copy" since I'm on 7.11sp6.  Yes, I know they "downported" it but I don't have those latest LMtools type packages.  Anyway, I'm OK with that.
I followed all the steps, fixing my RFCs, JCos, Destinations, cleaning up SLD, SLDAPICUST, creating new business systems...etc.
My big  problem is with the exchange profile.  Yes, it's easy to change all the SIDs and hostnames using the search tool for all the parameters in the exchange profile, but the one I COULD NOT CHANGE was the "ABAP Connection".  In there right after the copy was the hostname of the prod system, the client, and the user PILDUSER.   I attempted to put the hostname of my target (PIT) system, but I would get the error:
RFC 399 unable to connect
I'm certain the user is NOT locked and the password is correct for PILDUSER.
Worse yet, If I left the hostname in there that was set to "prod", then when I changed all the other values in the "parameters" section of the XI profile, then it actually changed my PROD system!!
If I keep the ABAP connection to PIT, then the entire exchange profile disappears for PIT.
Also, now my PROD system shows the PIT system as a "non-central adapter engine".
Ughh!  I'm totally stuck.  I'm not sure what to do.
It's as if the PIT (PI training) system somehow is linked to PIP (PI prod).  It's like PIT doesn't think he is his own box...
Any ideas?  I'm resisting opening a message because this will be so hard to explain to sap support.
--NICK

Hi Nick,
We went thru the same issue. Fortunately, it was between Dev to sandbox. I stopped the dev system and changed the exchange profile parameters to  sandbox hostname and brought the Dev up to fix the issue.
Prod showing as Non-Central Adapter engine :- Check your Business System in SLD and In CIM Instances in SLD, check your XI Integration server assigned to right Business System.
Note 764176 - Error in XI due to inconsistent SLD contents :- helped me come over PI post step issues.
Thanks,
Arjun

And this is the strange point: my source system is not a BI and my dataclasses .SQL files are not empty.
Me too i would expect that the files should be empty but instead they are full of object definitions.
For example i have APPL0.SQL that contains a list of all tables of ECC system, for example
tab: MAMT
sql:     CREATE TABLE "MAMT"
            ("MANDT" SAPDB6VARCHAR(000003)
            DEFAULT '000' NOT NULL,
            "MATNR" SAPDB6VARCHAR(000018)
            DEFAULT ' ' NOT NULL,
            "SPRAS" SAPDB6VARCHAR(000001)
            DEFAULT ' ' NOT NULL,
            "MEINH" SAPDB6VARCHAR(000003)
            DEFAULT ' ' NOT NULL,
            "MTXID" SAPDB6VARCHAR(000002)
            DEFAULT ' ' NOT NULL,
            "LFDNR" SAPDB6VARCHAR(000002)
            DEFAULT '00' NOT NULL,
            "MAKTM" SAPDB6VARCHAR(000040)
            DEFAULT ' ' NOT NULL)
            IN "&location&"
            INDEX IN "&locationI&"
            LONG  IN "&locationL&"
          COMPRESS YES;
          ALTER TABLE "MAMT" LOCKSIZE ROW;
and like this for all others tables.
What would occur if i launch an import with such .SQL files?
(shuld i put this question to another thread or is fine for you to answer on this?)
Thank you again.

• New Development system copy from Production

Hi All,
Hope you can help me out here with some ideas.
We are currently planning to implement a new SAP BW Development system, and for this we would like to make it a 1:1 copy of our current production system. Meaning all from customizing, ABAP, workbench objects etc.
But what we do not want is all the transaction and master data in infoobject, cubes etc., we are only interested in the structure and objects. Therefore we can rule out "System copy".
My question is then, is there any other ways to do this when system copy is a no go? I know we can do client copy but then we will not get all the workbench / ABAP programs which we need.
Any ideas on how to do this?
Thx. in Advance

Hi Rasmus,
But what we do not want is all the transaction and master data in infoobject, cubes etc., we are only interested in the structure and objects. Therefore we can rule out "System copy".
Options 1: As BI objects are cross client , copying client will not solve your purpose 100%.
You can perform system copy and then clean up data in DEV
Option 2: You can create a new Development and then create TRs for required configuration objects and move to new development system.
Option 3: Use SLO tools to perform container copy without any data.
Hope this helps.

Deepak Kori

The owner for this table is SAPSR3. Some oracle forums suggested to drop the index before recreating it. But when i do "drop index SAPSR3."/BI0/E0RSTT_C06~P..it says.."the specified index does not exist". But when I go to recreate this index, it doesn get created successfully. After that when I re-run the import, it again fails. Suprisingly..now if i go to check if this index is present thru a sql querry:
select owner, object_name, object_type from dba_objects where object_name='SAPSR3."/BI0/E0RSTT_C06~P"', it tells "no rows selected". This is happening everytime, I create an index, where it gets created successfully, and the import again fails with the same error in SAPDFACT.log.
I found an SAP note 885441 named..common errors during migration..although mine isnt a migration..my both source and destination are Red hat 64 bit platform.
The note 1st asks to download the latest R3load..which I did and extracted in the kernel directory of the source..then it also asked to edit the .TSK file..in my case..SAPDFACT.TSK..where the lines:
I /BIC/E<Cubename>~<index> C err
to  I /BIC/E<Cubename>~<index> C ign..
I did that..this time..the import again fails..but in the SAPDFACT.log..it complains about some other index..n the same gets generated in the .TSK file as well..the earlier index error is not again generated.
I am not sure..what is going wrong..my export went through successfully.i have done the prep steps for export as well..before that i ran the SMIGR_CREATE_DLL report as well..
Any inputs are highly appreciated..

But during system copy it is asking for Database recovery . For recovery i am using DATABASE MANAGER TOOL  (DBMGUI 7.6 maxdb) but it is asking for IP ,DBname username and password.
I have given the IP and DB Name but  dont know the username  and password for the target Machine SAPSID
Because at the time of system copy it asked for database recovery before creating the database users phase .
I checked with xuser list from command line it is showing no values.
Tried with the username and password given at OS level and the password for Source system but no luck.
So what to do.....
Please help

Hi,
thanks for your reply.

CAn you precise also what Migration tool are you using?
Migration from 5.1 to SAP BPC 7.0 NW?
In that case when you are speaking about the installation about what part are you speaking?
I think actually you are speaking about the migration tool from 4.2 to 7.0 Microsoft version .
In that case you can install the mIgration tool just with SAP BPC sys admin users and you have to input the password for that user. Sys admin user for BPC is usually the user used for installation of SAP BPC server.
Any way I suggest to follow the Migration tool training document and there you will find all the information necessary.

• System copy for PI 7.0 system

Hi,
We are doing system copy for complete landscape and every time we used to perform PI system copy using SAP standard procedure of backup/restore, Java  exp/imp.
But can we use another approach of exporting IR/ID from source to Target. Because we do not have any transactional data in PI and what are different things that we need to take care if we export individual components.
Like new ports, we20,we21, IDX1,IDX2
Thanks,
Venkat.

to elaborate more,
we are doing system copy from Dev to Sandbox (we already have working sand box)
I am planning below steps
1) export all the software components from development system - Integration repository and Directory
2) Adjust the transport path in SLD (source Dev and target Sandbox)
3) Import the software components to Sandbox for Integration repository and Directory.
4) change user-passwords to match sandbox authentication.
Please let me know if i am missing any steps and has any one did a copy by above procedure.
Thanks,
Venkat.

• System copy from SAP R/3 47x110 with Oracle 10.2 to Oracle 11.2

Hello,
I want to do a system copy from SAP R/3 4.7 Enterprise 47x110 with Oracle 10.2 to a new machine with same SAP version but with oracle 11.2. (After this I will upgrade to ERP 6.0)
I will do this with export/import but I don't find any documentation (manuals or notes).
I only find this:
Note 1499877 - Oracle 11.2 for R/3 Enterprise 4.7 Ext. Set 1.10
but this note is only for a new installation, I don't know if this work with system copy
Note 516246 - INST- System Copy for SAP Systems based on SAP Web AS 6.20
This don't have information about oracle 11.2
I read the manual "Homogeneous and Heterogeneous System Copy for SAP® Systems Based on SAP Web Application Server 6.20" but this also don't say nothing about oracle 11.2
Can you help me? Where can I find this documentation and what DVDs (master and kernel) should I use?
Best regards

Hi Juan,
Thanks for your answer.
That is my doubt, what installation master shoud I use for export oracle 10.2 and import in oracle 11.2?
Note "1499877 - Oracle 11.2 for R/3 Enterprise 4.7 Ext. Set 1.10" say that I can use installation master of R/3 4.7 Set 2 (47x200) to install a new system.
I found this media:
51033746_9 Installation Master 6.20/6.40 Linux on x86_64 64bit
and
51040087_7 NW 04 SR1 Inst. Mst. Linux x86_64 64bit f. Oracle 10.2/11.2
I think this is the note that I need:

• R/3 System Copy PRD -- QA Oracle 9

Hi all,
We need to perform a system copy of Production back to QA (4.7/6.40 kernel). My previous experience with a system copy was on a 4.6C system with Oracle 8 using R3COPY. I have just downloaded the latest system copy guide 'Homogeneous and Heterogeneous System Copy for SAP® Systems Based on SAP Web Application Server 6.20' and for Oracle it says that backup/restore method is not recommended or support and to use R3LOAD. We are not keen to use this method as it requires a longer Production downtime for us (more than twice what would be required for offline backup), also we would need the space available on the disk.
Has anyone still used the backup/restore method as described in the 4.6C system copy guide with Oracle 9? I don't see why this method is not supported since for us it would be much easier.
Thanks
- Natalie

Hello,
Perhaps this notes can be of help:

On this notes you can find other interesting refering the same issue
Not much into system copies with the new tools, but I think it is possible to use backup/restore.
The only thing is that you will have a little "mess" -> the tablespace name will have the old "SID", same happens with the schema. Unless you have installed the system with this issue in mind and used a "neutral" schema, the note is ( I think )617444

• ECC6 EHP2 (ABAP+Java)  system copy using file system copy

Hello Experts,
I have a question around system copy method for a dual stack ECC6 EHP2 system.
We are planning to take full file system backup of this entire ECC6 EHP2 dual stack system and throw it on a completely new hardware with new host name but same SID.  We are also planning to do a host renaming in instance profiles and re-building the control files in target system after we finish the file system restore.
Is this method supported in SAP ? Or we strictly have to use  SAPinst to do export and import method.  In any case our source and target platform is not going to chance as per our scenario.
Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
Harshal

> Thanks for the quick response. Is their any document that says it is not supported ?  Because of no proper document that says no to do it, client want's to try it out.
For the ABAP part this is certainly feasible.
The Java part has not only issues with the secure store but also with SID and hostname. The old values are stored in many places in the database and in, depending on the applications installed, many .properties files in the filesystem. So it would be not enough to somehow regenerate the secure store but also change hostname and SID in different places that are not really all documented.
What you are basically looking for is
Note 757692 - Changing the hostname for J2EE Engine 6.40/7.0 installation
with the significant sentence
This note should be applied only when the hostname of a machine
where the j2ee engine was already installed has changed.
It does not replace the SAP official system copy procedure and
MUST NOT be used for copying of an instance to another host and/or with different SID.

• System Copy from ABAP Stack to ABAP+Java Stack

Hi,
Is it possible to system copy (homogeneous or heterogeneous) from a system based on ABAP Stack to a system based on ABAP+Java Stack? Is it the normal system copy procedure or something aditional is required to do. Pl. advise. Thanks
regards

It depends on what you want to copy, a system copy will always wipe out the existing target. But if you want to only copy data, you might be able to do a client copy. You can start with this SAP note: [552711 - FAQ: Client copy|https://service.sap.com/sap/bc/bsp/spn/sapnotes/index2.htm?numm=552711]

• System Copy  and Logical system name conversion

Hello All,
Can any one let me know some inputs over these few queries.
1. How much time would a 500+GB clients take for Export and reimport after the system copy.
2. What would be run time of the BDLSS report ( Converting the logical system names) for a typical 1500 GB QTY system
The requirement is my QTY has 3 clients, and i would like to refresh it with my PRD data. How do i safely perform thia activity with the least downtine possible and please note, the clients are around 500+ GB huge..
Thanks in advance for your inputs.

• PI 7.1 system copy (abap+java)

Hello,
We need homogenous copy of PI 7.1 system to an existing system (newly installed PI 7.1). I would like to use database specific option (oracle).I was studying SAP guide for System copy of PI 7.1 and there are slight diff comparing to NW 7.0 double stacks.
Comparing to NW 7.0 double stacks I can't see here step for exporting central instance where application specific filesystem and SDM filesystem was archived (I know SDM is not present  in 7.1 anymore). In addition I can see in guide for 7.1 new option for database refresh. However this section also does not describes any needs for taking special care of java filesystem content.Does it mean that I do not need to take special care for java filesytem content anymore on 7.1?
I am bit wondering if it is sufficient for 7.1 just to refresh DB (with restore method for oracle for example) and then perform just adaptation of java IDs in profiles as described in section for database refresh of system copy guide PI 7.1? Will be this way system consistent (consistent abap part and consistent java part)? On NW 7.0 after restore of DB only, java part would be not consistent, is this new in 7.1?
Thanks for your feedback in advance

Hello -
Since you need the complete ABAP and JAVA databases, you will want to use the system copy tool on the installation CD. If you are using a Micrsoft SQL system, you will be able to save yourself some steps. Here is what we did for our MSSQL refresh:
Use sapinst to do a file system export on the source system.
Take back up of source system and use sapinst to restore it to target system.
Process
1. Detach the database files from the source system database or create a backup and copy the files
to the target system.
2. Attach the database files or restore the backup of the source database on the target database server.
3. Run SAPinst to install the target system by choosing the following on the Welcome screen:
<Your SAP system> Software Life-Cycle Options System Copy Target System <system variant>
<technical stack> .
Let me know if you have more questions or if you need more information. I can try and answer a few if you are trying to use ORACLE and UNIX / LINUX. Thanks! - Will S.
