What is tempo in Logic Pro 9?

Hi,
I am a professional musician with 30 years of experience and academic background.
I seriously consider buying a LogicPro. I'm familiar with it, I've been frequently using it in the recording studios.
I have a simple question, yet it has to do with the thinking behid LogicPro9.
In all the documentation it has been rather poorly covered:
What is a tempo and how and where it connects to a measure definition?
OK, one may say, 120 BPM, for example, or whatsoever, and that's fine.
But what is *a beat* and where it is getting defined?
In "Metronome Settings" there is a sensible approach:
A click tone for the bar setting (which reflects the barline)
A click tone for the beat setting (which reflects the beat definition)
A division definition + (optional) click tone for the division.
However it is only for clicking purpose.
To my surprise, if one tries to set a tempo in global tracks that relates to the the beat definition for a song section, confusion occurs. Tempo happens to be a hard-coded dogma. How come?
A trivial answer is: it has to be a quarter-note. But here is no such definition in music practice or theory. This happens to be very false for beats other than quarter notes, such as half notes, eight notes, or, let's say dotted quarter notes, to name just a few. One may not frequently find such designations in mainstream pop music, or music for commercials & games, but music in general is full of such designations, for example film music, classical music, chamber music…
Beat is a fundamental concept in music and has to be definable as such. Tempo has to relate to the definition of a beat, not to a fraction of a mainstream prejudice or unquestioned practice.
What if one wants to use Logic as composition tool for making a serious piece of music? Where to define such a tempo, so it that both, signature and tempo read and behave correctly for a respective section, without having to do manual on-the-fly calculations, and without misdefining, let's say a 60 BPM tempo for a 2/2 measure as a 120 tempo, or a 2/2 measure as 2/4 measure, for example?
Thanks in advance.
S

I'm not entirely sure whether I'm on the right track here, but I'll give it a shot.
The glossary in the Logic manual has this definition of what is reffered to as a tick -
'The smallest unit of timing resolution in a MIDI sequencer. In Logic Pro, this is 1/3840th
of a note. Logic Pro can go down to single sample accuracy (at sufficient zoom levels) for
edits and positioning, but the MIDI protocol is not fast enough to support this.'
So, the value (number of ticks) of a whole note, crotchet, semiquaver, whatever, is in fact variable, according to the tempo of a piece of music. This doesn't matter - the important matter is whether that particular resolution issufficient for all normal musical purposes; I can't imagine anyone finding that it isn't. It has to be like this because that's how digital processes work, by manipulating numbers on a basic level - the program does that for you though, you don't have to calculate anything yourself !
You can easily insert tempo or time signature changes in Logic (you don't need the global track to insert time signatures). The score facilities are very extensive in Logic, although I don't use them myself much; certainly capable of use a serious composition tool, as many musicians have and do.
I think you may be thinking about it in perhaps a little too much detail - the best thing to do is get Logic and get stuck in to doing something and work it all out as you go along - there is a lot to learn, so be aware that it will take time and a bit of head scratching and purple language if you're that way inclined, but it will very probably pay off in the end.

  • Is 5 bpm really the slowest tempo in Logic Pro?

    Hi:
Am I missing something? Why can't I set the tempo to .1, like I used to be able to in every version of Logic since Creator 1.3 on the Atari?

I think I saw someone mention that somewhere on the page on these forums there's a place to comment/complain/bug-report to the Apple wizards; do you have any idea where that is? I can't imagine why they'd arbitrarily set the minimum tempo at 5 bpm. Especially when the slowest piece of music in the world is currently being played in Germany, and it's going to take 639 YEARS to complete (quoting here):
A relative rush of activity broke out here this week in the world's slowest and longest lasting concert as two new notes sounded in a piece of music that is taking a total of 639 years to perform in its entirety.
The abandoned Buchardi church in Halberstadt, eastern Germany, is the venue for a mind-boggling 639-year-long performance of a piece of music by US experimental composer John Cage (1912-1992).
Entitled organ2/ASLSP (or "As SLow aS Possible"), the performance began nearly three years ago on Sept. 5, 2001 and is scheduled to last until 2639.
The first year and half of the performance was total silence, with the first chord -- G-sharp, B and G-sharp -- not sounding until Feb. 2, last year.
But things really got going yesterday as two additional Es, an octave apart, were sounded, being held down by weights on an organ being built especially for the project.
Cage originally conceived ASLSP in 1985 as a 20-minute work for piano, subsequently transcribing it for organ in 1987.
But organizers of the John Cage Organ Project decided to take the composer at his word and stretch out the performance for 639 years, using Cage's transcription for organ.
The enormous running time was chosen to commemorate the creation of Halberstadt's historic Blockwerk organ in 1361 -- 639 years before the current project started.
That original organ, built by Nikolaus Faber for Halberstadt's cathedral, was the first organ ever to be used for liturgical purposes, ringing in a new era in which the organ has played a central role in church music ever since.
As part of Halberstadt's John Cage Organ Project, a brand-new organ is being built specially, with new pipes added in time for when new notes are scheduled to sound.
The next chord progression will take place on March 5, 2006, when the two Es that sounded on Monday will be released and the previous G-sharp, B and G-sharp chord that has sounded since February last year will change to a new chord of A, C and F-sharp.
Cage was a pupil of one of the 20th century's most influential composers, Arnold Schoenberg (1874-1951).
Cage's avant-garde oeuvre includes works such as the notorious 4'33", a piece for orchestra comprising four minutes and 33 seconds of total silence, all meticulously notated.
The organizers of the John Cage Organ Project say the record-breaking performance in Halberstadt also has a philosophical background -- to "rediscover calm and slowness in today's fast-changing world."
How are we Logic users to render this piece properly when the slowest we can go is a brisk 5 bpm?

  • What's the best Logic Pro training?

Have just converted from Cubase PC to LP mac, after 10 years..help!
What are the best training resources around?

I made the move from Cubase to Logic six years ago. Although Logic is basically a DAW like any other PT or DP, but its underlying concept is quite different. Make sure you understand that open "object oriented" concept.
Another problem many new and old Logic user have is its versatility. There are often many ways to do the same things and you have to first be aware of the different options and then choose which one suits your workflow best. i.e. there are three levels of Solo, there is not just one Solo button and that thing gets soloed.
If you are one of the more adventurous guys I would advice you at least try to understand the concept of the Environment. Even if you don't plan you mess with it, it will help your understanding of Logic.
I wrote quite a few manuals with lots of graphics  to help understand the concepts.
    Free Manuals
Most of them were for Logic 8 and Logic 7 and some of the features changed a bit but you can browse through and it will help you to get a better idea what you are getting into. BTW they are free pdf downloads.

  • What is the best Logic Pro 7 tutorial (with mpegs/dvd/mov)

I am curious. I'm more than a beginner. I know how to finish a song, import files, export, bounce, manipulate multiple midi devices, manipulate soft synths, aux/busses and the like
But I'm inexperienced with the environment, key commands, quick audio editing features, the audio editor and deeper aspects of setting up logic screensets to work for me - How the heck do people make those screensets that change depending on where the SPL is located -like Apple's demonstration song in the apple store ? What is that ? Can that be sued to automatically open a Reason file for instance? What tutorial will be worht my time and money ? THANKS !
I'm looking for a tutorial that will move me into being a power user.

I'm using the series from MacProVideo.com. http://www.macprovideo.com/MPV/html/logicPro.html. I find them easy to use and they've answered questions that I just couldn't find in the book.

  • What is this? (Logic Pro 7 Song)

If you look at this movie
    http://images.apple.com/movies/us/apple/logic/demos01_2005/apple_logic_02320.mov
Look at the section "Mastering". What I want to know is: What is that orchestral song heard at the beginning and end of the section? Is it a demo song? I really like it!

Oh, by the way, looking at the movie in fullscreen, i can tell that the .lso file is something like "Mastering Plug-ins.lso". That isn't a demo song. Where can I find the lso file?

  • What about Photoshop 6, Logic Pro 6 etc.?

Is there a 'universal' upgrade for earlier Photoshop (6.x), or Logic Audio Pro 6.x?
Is there anything coming down the pipe? Or will I be forced to upgrade ... and if so, is there a 'universal' or Intel version of Photoshop now out?
    Ben

    Hi ibm1,
Universal, the way I mean it, is the version required to run these applications on the new Mac Intel chip.
Foolish me. I went out and bought the laptop, assuming I would just come home and dump in me $15,000 worth of software. And then take off on Monday for a month away from home base but still able to work. Nope. Virtually none of it will work unless I can get upgrades to the 'universal' version, which does not exist for most of this software.
    The joys of bleeding edge.

  • How to do Tap Tempo in Logic Pro 7

    anyone know???

Open Key Commands, look under Global Commands and you'll find Tap Tempo. Or, do a search for it by typing Tap Tempo into the Spotlight-like search box in the upper RH corner.
Assign a key or key combination to it (mine's shift-period).
    Ta da!

  • Logic pro x what you can expect from installation?

    Hi There guys.
What exactly is the logic pro x downlaod and install procedure?
How soon after you download the 650MB of data from the app store can you use Logic X?
Right now I am unable to use logic x, its just busy at the "BASIC CONTENT DOWNLOAD" screen... downloading 2 gig of stuff.
Is this normal? Is it only after this download that I can actually run and use logic x?
Cause right now thats all the app does is open a "basic content downloader".
I can see the logic app menu at the top but things like open song etc. are greyed out.
Please if any of you could shed some light, I would appreciate it.
    Thanks.

and then....... how can i learn where those files go? Logic has always been frustrating in that way. It is so difficult to figure out where are the sound files are stored.
    Any pointers, suggestions appreciated greatly.

  • What Can Logic Pro 8 Do that LP 7 Can't?

My question is... What will I be able to do with LogisStudio/Logic Pro 8 ( besides getting rid of the XSkey ), that I can't already do with Logic Pro 7?
Is it really worth the upgrade of $199.00 to have a different GUI & no need for an XS key?

It seems to have fixed a number of long-standing bugs. For instance, bouncing a track almost always ended up with a little glitch at the beginning of the bounced file. That's fixed.
I've had my end-of-song marker move mysteriously for no reason at all. That seems to have been fixed.
Waveburner actually can now burn CDs and you can use MatchEQ and multi-pressor with it. I believe a lot of people had trouble with it before.
There is a 33 page "What's new in Logic Pro 8" PDF here:
    http://manuals.info.apple.com/en/NewFeatures_in_Logic_Pro8.pdf
You should take a look at that. Not everything there is something you can't currently do - some of it is simplified workflow - but there are a fair number of new, but little features.

  • Logic pro x. Global tracks chord

I work a great deel with Logic Pro 9 using Global Tracks Chords to manage chordshifting when i use loops. I Bought Logic Pro X, and I cant find this possibility
In Logic Pro X. Need help fast......

Yes Gr8Dayz, it is correct. No support for Chords. This is incredible because competitors, like Cubase, add this features at highest level to help composer.
Not all... I've found big problems with loops without chord track... yes, you can use "flex" but it's not a solution for a songwriter or for a composer that wants to give a "song structure" with chords (and found "ideas").
At the end to compose with Logic Pro X takes 3-4 time more than "old" Logic Pro.
It's incredible but yesterday I had to import a simple MP3 file (44.1 khz.) to make a recording. I could not believe what I saw ... Logic Pro X makes a mistake ... the beginning of the audio file was compromised ... there were silences/empty sound placed in the first 5 seconds .
I've been working on this thing one hours, I thought I had done something wrong. So I repeated the import procedure 10 times creating new projects at all frequencies available.
What had happened? Logic Pro X has a not defined bug that prevents (in this case) the correct import file.
How do I know this ?
    Easy.
I opened my beloved Pro Logic (the " old ") and the first time everything worked fine. Not only was it faster, but the file WAS PERFECT. Sound great.
Conclusion . I am going to leave the O Logic Pro X. If Apple programmers do not change things I AM OBLIGED TO SPEND € 600 TO BUY A PROGRAM THAT MAKES SERIOUS THINGS SERIOUSLY... II will not give you the name of the software, but you can easily imagine it.
I think we could change the name of Logic Pro X and, unfortunately, rename it with a different name : Amateur (il)Logic X...

I'm probably overlooking something but from what I can tell, what I have meets Logic Pro 9's reccommended system requirements, not just the minimum... Any help is GREATLY appreciated!!!

I will also add a couple of quick observations..
The Fujitsu HD you have in your MBP.. is a very slow and poor performing Hard Drive in terms of Audio use...
The Yamaha Audiogram3 USB is a pretty poor performing interface mainly because of its USB Audio 1.1 implementation..... It may be cheap.. but many people have reported it really isn't up to the job when used with Pro Software. in combination of being used with low powered Macs... such as your MBP (given it's specs.. just 2 cores, only 4GB of RAM,  etc...)
Sorry, I know thats not what you wanted to hear.. and those two factors alone may be causing the poor performance you are seeing...
However, there are many other factors that could be impacting performance and those you might be able to tweak and work around as per the earlier support article I gave you a link to...

  • How do I get Logic Pro to work?

I finally believed all the hype about Mac being better and gave in. I got a MacBook primarily to use GarageBand and Logic Pro, which are the programs I also use in class. I go to set up Logic Pro. Everything goes smoothly until I try to open the program and I receive this message:
"You can't use this version of the application Logic Pro with this version of Mac OS X. You have 9.0.0."
Please tell me there's an easy way to fix, upgrade, etc. this - without having to purchase anything additional. This was not a cheap enough computer to just accept the fact that the features I wanted most may or may not work or be the right programs after installation.
    Thanks.

GarageBand is a stripped down, basic, user friendly DAW based on Logic. If you are buying Logic Pro, use Logic Pro. It's a professional application, with a leaning curve.  Why buy logic pro if you plan on using GarageBand anyway? Take the time to read the manual, read/watch tutorials, and read others questions on forums.
GarageBand is meant to be able to open, and use easily and immediately by anyone with a mac. Logic pro is the opposite.
My advice: ask yourself what you need in logic pro that GarageBand can't do for you? If all you want or need is more AU plug ins, you might consider buying instrument plugins and continuing to work in GarageBand.
However, if you find the power and features of GarageBand limiting (which some would pretty much off the bat), then it's def work it to put in the time and energy into learning logic.
My shorter answer would be: all the garage jam packs you get w logic pro you could use with GarageBand.
As far as logic's drum sampler and synths etc...... See my longer answer. If you're spending the money on logic, and want to use logic's synths etc you prob want to spend the time learning it, as GarageBand doesn't play in the same league as logic.

  • Logic pro 9 - Tracks reset faders when song returned to start

Logic resets settings on tracks (volume, pan, maybe more) when song is returned to Start. All mixing changes are lost even if song is saved before rewind. Automation state irrelevant.
All suggestions thought about and may be tried.
    Thanks,
    Joe

    Ok!
First off, I would like to thank Data Stream Studio for how fast they returned with an answer.
Next, their answer did allow me to make changes to settings and have the changes survive after saving and rewind.
However, after going through all the tracks and resetting the faders to 0db and saving the file; if I then try to make further changes to the mix and then rewind the same problem reappears.
This in effect will force me to mix by list not by DAW graphic interface.
So I guess the real question is "what it is blocking logic Pro 9 from recording and keeping channel setting changes?"
As I stated in the original question, the automation mode is irrelevant. Such changes as are made in the automation data are lost when the track is rewound.

  • Why does Logic Pro 8.0.1 update now crash with certain templates?

I just updated to Logic Pro 8.0.1. The previous version, Logic Pro 8.0 never had this problem.
Logic Pro 8.0.1 starts up and functions overall just fine. However, when I try to open the "Instruments" template or the "Guitar Tones" template, it crashes Logic Pro 8.0.1.
The "Empty Project" template opens and works just fine.
I have not changed the original installed templates whatsoever, and I have never had a RAM issue on this machine. These exact templates all worked perfectly with the previous version of Logic on this machine (Logic Pro 8.0). The problem only occurred after the update to Logic Pro 8.0.1.
For the template "Instruments," Logic Pro 8.0.1. tries to load the audio files for "Basic Synth Det.exs" and crashes on "3hook24.wav".
Yes, I have verified and repaired the hard drive, and yes I have verified and repaired permissions.
Does anyone know what the problem with Logic Pro 8.0.1 crashing with certain templates could be?

There should be a crash log, which you can view in the Console.app in your utilities folder. Look for 'Logic' logs. They are often arcane, but something obvious might jump out at you, like a certain plug in crashing etc.. If you look for the number of the thread that crashed, often there is an indication what brought Logic down in the listing details for that thread#.

Did you check that this .wav file is still available (not corrupted) and plays OK in the finder?
