What is the 7200 RPM versus 5400 RPM performance increase on MBP?

I am in the process of ordering a 2.0 Ghz MBP with 2 GB of RAM and Aperture 1.1. I am using this system for Canon EOS 5D RAW files (13MB-15MB).
Would you suggest the 7200 100 GB hard drive or the 5400 120 GB hard drive? My few months of experience with RAM files has shown me that every extra gig of hard drive space is good, but if the 7200 drive will make a significant performance difference I would go that way.
Thank you very much for any help with this
MBP 2.0? Titanium 1Ghz Powerbook last "last PB I would ever need to buy"   Mac OS X (10.4.6)   G4 iBook 12"

I have the 2.16GHz MBP and I got the 120GB drive so that I could get all the HD space possible.
I cannot say what the difference in speed is between the 5400 and 7200 RPM is but I can say that the 5400 is fine.
I just got v1.1 installed this morning and am playing with it now ... it's not super fast, that's for sure, but for field use on a laptop I think it will be just fine. ...and now with only 20.1GB remaining available on my HD I'm REAL glad I didn't go for the 100GB.

  • What is the difference between personnel development and performance management

    Hi,
What is the difference between personnel development and performance management in terms of configuration and in  portal level .
    Thanks
    Srikant

    HI Srikant,
Personnel development is PD module where u can configure the qualification catalog with the proficiency which can be attached to the position or job as a requirement and the same can be attached to the person as a qualification and then you can do the profile matchup and find any qualification deficit and can propose any trraining required to impart the qualification. And also you can do succession planing, career planing and also development plan.
Performance management is an appraisal cycle in a company . All appraisal process between manager and the employee will be taken care via portal with the appraisal template.(form)
    hope this will help you.

  • 7200 RPM drive versus 5400 RPM drives

I'm about to invest in my next laptop and have the following impressions:
7200 is generally faster for sustained reads/writes and seeks.
7200 uses marginally more power (0.5 watts) - but is not going to be noticable in terms of heat or battery life (spin down, CPU, lighting are the big draws I presume there)
What I haven't seen is any comment on noise levels. Has anyone experience or data from the OEM to compare noise levels/frequencies for whatever drives Apple seems to ship these days?
    Thanks!

Hi, don't know if this will really answer your question but my new MBP just arrived Monday with a 100GB, 7200 RPM drive. I definitely notice the improvement in access time. Noise? I cannot tell the difference, its as quiet as a mouse. Drawing a bit more power but it is negligble. If you can swing it, I would recommend the 7200...Too bad you can't order it in a larger drive size though. 120 would have been nice

  • The big 7200rpm vs 5400 rpm debate

I'm planning to buy a 2.2ghz Macbook Pro. I would get one with 2Gb of RAM and the 160Gb 7200 rpm HD, but now someone I know had already bought the standard config (2.2 Ghz, 2Gb, 120 5400 rpm) through his company but he's selling it because he'd rather use the money he gets from it to buy a 24"" iMac. I would be using the MBPro for iLife, Parellels with Win2K, and possibly Ubuntu Linux. I'm not one to store thousands of songs or photos on my mac, because I'd be buying an external HD for that. He's offering me the MB Pro for a reduced price (a bit above the price of the Black Macbook with a 160Gb HD). I also plan to buy Starcraft 2 when it's released and will also be playing Freespace Open heavily. Will I regret not getting the 7200rpm drive or is the 5400 rpm drive more than fast enough for everything but high-end stuff ?

Probably not. However, if you do regret it the saving should be enough for you to go out a buy one and swap them over giving you the 5400rpm drive to put in an external case.

  • What is the correct way to measure RPM using Visual Basic?

I have something that works now, but I want to know if there is a better way. I am using a 6023E, I have a Hall Effect switch that goes low then high each rev when a magnet goes by. I have the signal connected to the GATE pin on counter0. I poll the card for the RPM over and over using code based closely on the example STCsinglePeriodMeasure. While this works, I'm not sure exactly what this code is doing. Do I need to call the entire thing every time? The problem is I need to reset and arm the counter each time before starting the counter, and calling everything was the only way I could get it to work. I'm looking for a way to either trim this down, or maybe there is another way altogether that is more apporpriate. Here's the code:
    iDevice% = 1
    ulGpctrNum& = ND_COUNTER_0
    ulArmed& = ND_YES
    ulTCReached& = ND_NO
    iYieldON% = 1
    iStatus% = GPCTR_Control(iDevice%, ulGpctrNum&, ND_RESET)
    iRetVal% = NIDAQErrorHandler(iStatus%, "GPCTR_Control/RESET", iIgnoreWarning%)
    iStatus% = GPCTR_Set_Application(iDevice%, ulGpctrNum&, ND_SINGLE_PERIOD_MSR)
    iRetVal% = NIDAQErrorHandler(iStatus%, "GPCTR_Set_Application", iIgnoreWarning%)
    iStatus% = GPCTR_Change_Parameter(iDevice%, ulGpctrNum&, ND_SOURCE, ND_INTERNAL_100_KHZ)
    iRetVal% = NIDAQErrorHandler(iStatus%, "GPCTR_Change_Parameter/SOURCE", iIgnoreWarning%)
    iStatus% = GPCTR_Change_Parameter(iDevice%, ulGpctrNum&, ND_GATE, ND_DEFAULT_PFI_LINE)
    iRetVal% = NIDAQErrorHandler(iStatus%, "GPCTR_Change_Parameter/GATE", iIgnoreWarning%)
    iStatus% = GPCTR_Change_Parameter(iDevice%, ulGpctrNum&, ND_INITIAL_COUNT, ulCount&)
    iRetVal% = NIDAQErrorHandler(iStatus%, "GPCTR_Change_Parameter/INITCOUNT", iIgnoreWarning%)
    iStatus% = GPCTR_Control(iDevice%, ulGpctrNum&, ND_PROGRAM)
    iRetVal% = NIDAQErrorHandler(iStatus%, "GPCTR_Control/PROGRAM", iIgnoreWarning%)
' Loop until 'ulGpctrNum' is no longer armed, or run window is closed.
    Do
    iStatus% = GPCTR_Watch(iDevice%, ulGpctrNum&, ND_ARMED, ulArmed&)
    DoEvents
    Loop While ((ulArmed& = ND_YES) And (iStatus% = 0)) And RunWindow.ExitStatus = "Running"
    If RunWindow.ExitStatus = "Running" Then
'Run window wasn't closed, so read data.
    iRetVal% = NIDAQErrorHandler(iStatus%, "GPCTR_Watch/ARMED", iIgnoreWarning%)
    iStatus% = GPCTR_Watch(iDevice%, ulGpctrNum&, ND_COUNT, ulCount&)
    iRetVal% = NIDAQErrorHandler(iStatus%, "GPCTR_Watch/COUNT", iIgnoreWarning%)
    iStatus% = GPCTR_Watch(iDevice%, ulGpctrNum&, ND_TC_REACHED, ulTCReached&)
    If (ulTCReached& = ND_YES) Then
MsgBox "Counter reached terminal count! RPM value may be incorrect"
    Else
'ulCount is the period in microseconds, RPM = 1/val*(100000ms/s)*(60s/min)
    RPM = 6000000 / ulCount&
    ' Debug.Print RPM
    RunWindow.RPM.Text = Str(RPM)
    End If

Finally getting around to this again. My previous post is incorrect, as the code I am using is based on the single period measure (it's right there in the code). I am having a problem with the values returned with this method. Occasionally, the card will return a lower than expected count, resulting in a very large (and incorrect) RPM value. I'm thinking this must have something to do with arming the counter at some unfortunate and coincidental point on the gate signal, resulting in a short count. It must be an unlikely event, because I get thousands of good, consistent values for every one bad one.
To resolve this, I am thinking of going to the single buffered period measurement as suggested above. My idea is to set up a buffer with two values,
and always take the second one (to avoid coincidental arming and short counts). I could also set it up to return more values, and the application could choose the most likely one (ie return three values, throw out the largest and smallest, etc.)
I would rather just use the buffer in continuous mode, since the RPM varies much more slowly than the counter counts, and any snapshot of the buffer at any time would be sufficient, even in the presence of overwriting, etc. This would allow me to arm the counter once and poll it on the fly.
My concern is that in continuous mode, the counter will be throwing a lot of errors which will interefere with the program flow. Can I just set the counter to suppress all errors when I do a buffered read? Worst case, I get a value as it is being written to by the counter, which will have some garbage value (hopefully a recognizable signature) which I can throw out in favor of the other values.
    Thanks,
    Doug

  • What's the best way of analyzing WCF performance

I have an issue in production WCF is very slow compared to WSE (Web services). Note: that issue is reproduced only in production and on the test servers everything goes fine.
    WCF is using basicHttpBinding.
I read a lot about enabling tracing. But when I do it on production I want to have not all traces just some kind of them and anyway still can't understand how to read timeline via Microsoft Trace Viewer
    I would appreciate any help
Ideas of how to finding the cause of such issues
Ideas how to theoretically solve the problem
Any tools that can help to profile WCF server
The main thing is what can cause WCF be slower than WSE (does it use the same mechanism under the hood .etc)?
UPDATE: I really believe that is something related to the business of server so some messages being queued and waiting for resources to be free. But don't know how to continue researching in that direction

    Hello Yuriy Gavriluk,
Perhaps you can use ANTS Performance Profiler
    http://documentation.red-gate.com/display/APP8/About+ANTS+Performance+Profiler
Profiling WCF services running on IIS
The procedure for profiling Windows Communication Foundation (WCF) services running in IIS is similar to the procedure used to profile other types of web application in IIS. It may help to think of the service as a server in a
    server-client relationship.
    To profile a WCF service:
•Before you start, change the WCF client contract to communicate on the unused port that you select in ANTS Performance Profiler (by default, 8013).
Changing the port is necessary because otherwise the client will communicate with the copy of the server hosted in IIS, not the copy in the worker process started by ANTS Performance Profiler.
•Set the URL for ASP.NET web application to the path to the web application on the server.
    •Select No browser
•When you start profiling, Internet Explorer will launch.
Minimize this window and interact with your client application instead.
You may look at below link for more info.
    http://documentation.red-gate.com/display/APP8/Profiling+WCF+applications
    Hope this helps you.
    With Regards,
    Shawn

  • I'm using Aperture for photos on my Mac, I have near 450G of raw photos and I'm running short on space, what is the best option to imrpove proformance and increase space.?

I use Aperture on my Mac and have approx 450Gigs of raw files for my photos and growing. I'm running short on space and system is starting to slow down. What are the best ooptions to improve performance and increase space space.?

important to note that what you are talking about is not a backup
It is simple to ahve your iPhoto library on an external drive -
Moving the iPhoto library is safe and simple - quit iPhoto and drag the iPhoto library intact as a single entity to the external drive - depress the option key and launch iPhoto using the "select library" option to point to the new location on the external drive - fully test it and then trash the old library on the internal drive (test one more time prior to emptying the trash)
And be sure that the External drive is formatted Mac OS extended (journaled) (iPhoto does not work with drives with other formats) and that it is always available prior to launching iPhoto
And backup soon and often - having your iPhoto library on an external drive is not a backup and if you are using Time Machine you need to check and be sure that TM is backing up your external drive
And you can have multiple i{Photo libraries - one can be on your internal drive and other on an external drive  --  iPhoto Library Manager - http://www.fatcatsoftware.com/iplm/ -  is a very helpful tool for managing multiple libraries

  • What is the best system maintenance software to use for a MBP??

Hello everyone, I was formerly using Mac Tune-up for my Macbook Pro and it did an okay job but I am not sure what Mac software I should be using to keep my system clean while keeping it running at optimal performance. Turns-out I can no longer use Mac Tune-Up since I upgraded to Mavericks from Snow Leopard. Can anyone recommend to me the best system maintenance software to use for my MBP with Mavericks OS and where I can get it (a link or site URL)?  Thanks in advance!

    How to maintain a Mac
    1. Make two or more backups of all your files, keeping at least one off site at all times in case of disaster. One backup is not enough to be safe. Don’t back up your backups; all should be made directly from the original data. Don’t rely completely on any single backup method, such as Time Machine. If you get an indication that a backup has failed, don't ignore it.
    2. Keep your software up to date. In the App Store or Software Update preference pane (depending on the OS version), you can configure automatic notifications of updates to OS X and other Mac App Store products. Some third-party applications from other sources have a similar feature, if you don’t mind letting them phone home. Otherwise you have to check yourself on a regular basis.
Keeping up to date is especially important for complex software that modifies the operating system, such as device drivers. Before installing any Apple update, you must check that all such modifications that you use are compatible. Incompatibility with third-party software is by far the most common cause of trouble with system updates.
    3. Don't install crapware, such as “themes,” "haxies," “add-ons,” “toolbars,” “enhancers," “optimizers,” “accelerators,” "boosters," “extenders,” “cleaners,” "doctors," "tune-ups," “defragmenters,” “firewalls,” "barriers," “guardians,” “defenders,” “protectors,” most “plugins,” commercial "virus scanners,” "disk tools," or "utilities." With very few exceptions, such stuff is useless or worse than useless. Above all, avoid any software that purports to change the look and feel of the user interface.
It's not much of an exaggeration to say that the whole "utility" software industry for the Mac is a fraud on consumers. The most extreme examples are the "CleanMyMac" and “MacKeeper” scams, but there are many others.
As a rule, the only software you should install is that which directly enables you to do the things you use a computer for, and doesn't change the way other software works.
Safari extensions, and perhaps the equivalent for other web browsers, are a partial exception to the above rule. Most are safe, and they're easy to get rid of if they don't work. Some may cause the browser to crash or otherwise malfunction.  Some are malicious. Use with caution, and install only well-known extensions from relatively trustworthy sources, such as the Safari Extensions Gallery.
Never install any third-party software unless you know how to uninstall it. Otherwise you may create problems that are very hard to solve. Do not rely on "utilities" such as "AppCleaner" and the like that purport to remove software.
    4. Don't install bad, conflicting, or unnecessary fonts. Whenever you install new fonts, use the validation feature of the built-in Font Book application to make sure the fonts aren't defective and don't conflict with each other or with others that you already have. See the built-in help and this support article for instructions. Deactivate or remove fonts that you don't really need to speed up application launching.
    5. Avoid malware. Malware is malicious software that circulates on the Internet. This kind of attack on OS X was once so rare that it was hardly a concern, but malware is now increasingly common, and increasingly dangerous.
There is some built-in protection against downloading malware, but you can’t rely on it—the attackers are always at least one day ahead of the defense. You can’t rely on third-party protection either. What you can rely on is common-sense awareness—not paranoia, which only makes you more vulnerable.
Never install software from an untrustworthy or unknown source. If in doubt, do some research. Any website that prompts you to install a “codec” or “plugin” that comes from the same site, or an unknown site, is untrustworthy. Software with a corporate brand, such as Adobe Flash Player, must come directly from the developer's website. No intermediary is acceptable, and don’t trust links unless you know how to parse them. Any file that is automatically downloaded from the web, without your having requested it, should go straight into the Trash. A web page that tells you that your computer has a “virus,” or that anything else is wrong with it, is a scam.
In OS X 10.7.5 or later, downloaded applications and Installer packages that have not been digitally signed by a developer registered with Apple are blocked from loading by default. The block can be overridden, but think carefully before you do so.
Because of recurring security issues in Java, it’s best to disable it in your web browsers, if it’s installed. Few websites have Java content nowadays, so you won’t be missing much. This action is mandatory if you’re running any version of OS X older than 10.6.8 with the latest Java update. Note: Java has nothing to do with JavaScript, despite the similar names. Don't install Java unless you're sure you need it. Most people don't.
    6. Don't fill up your disk/SSD. A common mistake is adding more and more large files to your home folder until you start to get warnings that you're out of space, which may be followed in short order by a startup failure. This is more prone to happen on the newer Macs that come with an internal SSD instead of the traditional hard drive. The drive can be very nearly full before you become aware of the problem.
While it's not true that you should or must keep any particular percentage of space free, you should monitor your storage use and make sure you're not in immediate danger of using it up. According to Apple documentation, you need at least 9 GB of free space on the startup volume for normal operation.
If storage space is running low, use a tool such as OmniDiskSweeper to explore the volume and find out what's taking up the most space. Move seldom-used large files to secondary storage.
    7. Relax, don’t do it. Besides the above, no routine maintenance is necessary or beneficial for the vast majority of users; specifically not “cleaning caches,” “zapping the PRAM,” "resetting the SMC," “rebuilding the directory,” "defragmenting the drive," “running periodic scripts,” “dumping logs,” "deleting temp files," “scanning for viruses,” "purging memory," "checking for bad blocks," "testing the hardware," or “repairing permissions.” Such measures are either completely pointless or are useful only for solving problems, not for prevention.
To use a Mac effectively, you have to free yourself from the Windows mindset that every computer needs regular downtime maintenance such as "defragging" and "registry cleaning." Those concepts do not apply to the Mac platform. A well-made computing device is not something you should have to think about much. It should be an almost transparent medium through which you communicate, work, and play. If you want a machine that needs a lot of attention, use a PC.
The very height of futility is running an expensive third-party application called “Disk Warrior” when nothing is wrong, or even when something is wrong and you have backups, which you must have. Disk Warrior is a data-salvage tool, not a maintenance tool, and you will never need it if your backups are adequate. Don’t waste money on it or anything like it.

  • Is it possible/what's the best way to run 3 displays from my MBP?

    Hi,
I just got a new desk with a raised platform. Currently, I have my TV up there for watching movies, etc, that's hooked into my display/thunderbolt port. I'd like to move my TV to the corner of my desk (to be viewable from the whole room), and put 2 monitors up where the TV was, to simulate more of a desktop experience. Is there a simple way to connect 3 displays like this?
Haven't gotten the monitors yet, and I will probably run my MBP with the lid closed.
    Thanks!

I've got the new model 15" MB Pro hooked up to the TripleHead2Go DP edition...
Only using 2 of the 3 outputs though.....  but they are running two Lenovo monitors @ 1920x1200 resolution....  i'd seriously run three of these, but the TripleHead can't take that resolution (rather it's the video card built into the MB)
the Matrox is seriously a great product, but only if the monitors *match*, different sized monitors won't work, work well anyways

  • What is the best Practice to improve MDIS performance in setting up file aggregation and chunk size

    Hello Experts,
in our project we have planned to do some parameter change to improve the MDIS performance and want to know the best practice in setting up file aggregation and chunk size when we importing large numbers of small files(one file contains one record and each file size would be 2 to 3KB) through automatic import process,
below is the current setting in production:-
    Chunk Size=2000
No. Of Chunks Processed In Parallel=40
    file aggregation-5
    Records Per Minute processed-37
and we made the below setting in Development system:-
    Chunk Size=70000
No. Of Chunks Processed In Parallel=40
    file aggregation-25
    Records Per Minute processed-111
after making the above changes import process improved but we want to get expert opinion making these changes in production because there is huge number different between what is there in prod and what change we made in Dev.
    thanks in advance,
    Regards
    Ajay

    Hi Ajay,
The SAP default values are as below
    Chunk Size=50000
No of Chunks processed in parallel = 5
File aggregation: Depends  largely on the data , if you have one or 2 records being sent at a time then it is better to cluster them together and send it at one shot , instead of sending the one record at a time.
Records per minute Processed - Same as above

  • What is the status of fixing nio Buffer performance?

The performance of nio Buffers is very slow in comparison to primitive arrays. Does anyone know the status for getting this fixed? For performance sensitive code, Buffers are currently unacceptable.
Several Bugs were open regarding this issue, but they have all mysteriously been closed without resolution?
    (Bug ID: 4411600, http://developer.java.sun.com/developer/bugParade/bugs/4411600.html)
    Any insight would be appreciated.

Here are numbers using the code from the Bug reference I posted above.

The only change I made was to the main() function so I could run tests multiple times to see if Hotspot would kick in at some point.
Here is the change I made. Replaced the original main() function with the following:
    >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>
    public static void main(String[] args) {
    for ( int x = 0; x < 5; x++ )
    System.gc();

But after taking a closer look at the code I realized that both the heap and direct buffers were being run through the same sum() and reverse() methods, so maybe Hotspot's inlining policy avoids keeping more than one specialized version of a function cached?
So I re-ran the benchmark, but only running time("heap"...) and time("direct",...) one at a time. I will not bother posting the numbers, but this time array, heap, and direct were all roughly equivalent.
So depending on the scenario, maybe it is not as bad as I though?
To try another variant, I replaced all calls to bb.get(j) with bb.get(), thinking this may be an opportunity for Buffer to be faster than array, since no start-of-buffer bounds check should be necessary (can only iterate forward).
But even running heap and direct separately, the test yielded slow numbers that suggest no inlining was performed again?
So I'm not sure what to think? I would like to use Buffers over primitive arrays, but I have no certainty of the performance characteristics of Buffers? They may run fast, or they may run very slow, depending on the scenario and which functions are used.
Here are the numbers after replacing calls bb.get(j) with bb.get().

  • What is the safest way to turn off / restart a hang MBP?

so i dont know why my MBP hangs suddenly when i insert a dvd movie into the optical drive upon from waking up from sleep
and it just totally freeze, the mouse wont move, pressing any button wont do either
so i had to hold down the power button to shut it down that way
is it the safest way to shut it down my MBP while it's hanging?
because i dont know the "ctrlaltdel" version for MAC
or is there any other button to specifically end a program like the "ctrlaltdel" thing?
    thanks

You can try a "force quit" by holding down the "alt-option""Apple-command""esc" keys where a window pops up and you can then, er, force quit any running application. But in your case where nothing is responsive not even the keyboard, then the way you're shutting down the MBP is fine. You may want to run a Permissions repair thru the disc utility and make sure the disc is fine.

  • What is an ageing report? What are the data sources used to develop an agin

    Hello BW gurus,
I was going thru some of the BW resumes. I could not understand some of the points mentioned below. Kindly go thru them and please explain each of it.
    Thank you.
    TR.
    •     Developed AR ageing report, created invoice layout and processed invoices.
What is an ageing report? What are the data sources used to develop an aging report
    •     Worked on month-end and year end processes such as Balance Sheet Statements and Profit and Loss Accounts.
What data sources does one use to get Balance sheet and P&L accounts tables and fields.
    •     Involved in the end to end implementation of BW at Reliance Group as a team member.
What are the tasks a BW consultant normally performs when he is involved in an end to end implementation project or
    a full life cycle project?
    •     Extensively worked on BW Statistics to optimize the performance of Info Cubes and to create Aggregates.
What do you mean when you say worked on BW statistics to optimize the performance of Info Cubes.
What are aggregates why do you need them?
    •     Prepared design documents from the Business Requirement documents and identified the
relevant data targets for satisfying the customer requirements.
What are the design documents does one prepare, please give an example.
    Is cube a data target?

What is an ageing report? What are the data sources used to develop an aging report
Aging refers to values in different time period ranges. Example, the customer (credit) aging report can look like this.
customer (credit)  for current period, 0 to 30 days, 30 to 90 days, 90 to 120 days. This is the way aging is classified.
What data sources does one use to get Balance sheet and P&L accounts tables and fields.
For P&L information, you may use 0FI_GL_6 datasource (or 0FI_GL_10 if you use ERP 5.0 version). This datasource reads the same information used in R/3 transaction f.01 (table glt0).
What are the tasks a BW consultant normally performs when he is involved in an end to end implementation project or a full life cycle project?
Requirement gathering, blueprint creation, development etc

What are the design documents does one prepare, please give an example.
Design document is basically a document to say  how the design is to be developed for a particular solution ex: FI it says what is the data fow and what are the data targets  to be used and how data shld be stored  for providing the client a solution they need.
    Is cube a data target?
Yes cube is a data target.
    Hope this Helps
